Such a great spot! Cigar and drink options are incredible. It is a real 5 star/fancy vibe about it. Love the decor and service. The flights are fantastic too for drinks. We sat inside and outside at this place - both are nice! Highly recommend a visit here if you love cigars and books!

Located in the West Village of New York City, this deluxe and tony cigar bar gives you the aura of living like Sean Connery as James Bond. Not only do timeless James Bond films play 24-7 at this sleek establishment, but it’s the very spot to order a Vodka Martini (shaken, not stirred) or glass of aged Scotch to sip on as you exhale cigars from The New World generation. The music is classy all-night long and is the perfect place to luxuriate in late on a Friday and Saturday night. Hudson Bar and Books is certainly not a miss!

Strong drinks served in an old time bar. Good if you need to smoke a cigar while drinking a cocktail.

Great cigar spot at the back of the bar with library vibe. Knowledgeable staff and very classy with movie feels. Wide array of cigars available for amateur to experienced smokers and have cool ways of cutting it. Whiskeys are way too expensive in my opinion hence not a 5*. $44 + tax + tip for 1oz of Glenlivet 18yrs.

Probably one of the best cigar bars I've ever been in my entire life. The staff is nothing but amazing.. Brett Tushar is an amazing guy! Treat people respect and I can't tell you how awesome that is! I'm

Google
Fantastic bar with a fine selection of whisky and classic cocktails. Cigars are also first rate and they have private label smokes easy to recommend. Perfect old school library / smoking room ambience. But the draw is the service which is impeccable and welcoming. I always look forward to coming to this establishment for a nightcap or late night cigar on every visit to NY.

Nestled in the heart of the city, Bar and Books offers a sophisticated ambiance from classic cocktails to innovative concoctions, the drink menu at Bar and Books is a testament to mixology mastery. Sip on their signature Old Fashioned, expertly crafted with premium whiskey and a hint of aromatic bitters, or indulge in their refreshing Lavender Martini, a delightful fusion of floral notes and crisp vodka. Each drink is meticulously prepared, showcasing the bartender's dedication to quality and creativity. At Bar and Books, every aspect of the experience, from the ambiance to the drinks and food, exudes sophistication and excellence. Whether you're a cocktail connoisseur or a food enthusiast, this establishment is sure to impress.

Google
Comfortable and unpretentious cigar bar with a decent food menu and some great cocktails. The room is small and somewhat narrow, but there is a great patio outside for the warmer weather. Most of the folks there were couples, but they were two or three solo guys like myself just there to unwind with a cigar and a glass of whiskey. The selection of cigars is not very broad especially when considering the Maduro styles or the larger ring sizes, theirs top out at 60, but you can bring your own and there is a modest cutting fee of $12. This will probably be my go-to cigar bar now that Mike the Greek has left Soho, and the vibe there has changed so dramatically.

Craig G.

Yelp
Great atmosphere for having a stoggie and an adult libation. It is very cool seeing so many ladies smoking quality cigars. The service is impeccable, very friendly warm and convivial. The drinks are not cheap however so enjoy em to the last drop. Open late for that smoking nightcap after a very busy night of dinner, live jazz, and lots of walking in the city that never sleeps.

Yelp
Came here with a friend who wanted to check this spot out. Pretty unique cigar bar concept. I came here with a coffee and the bartender was very pushy on getting me to buy a cocktail because I came with an outside drink. I ended up getting an Espresso Martini ($21) to "make his boss happy". We each purchased a cigar. I got the Hoyo de Monterey, which was a Cuban cigar. The first one they gave me, the leaf started falling apart on me. They were able to give me a new one and made sure the leaf wasn't dry. My buddy got the Camacho Honduras. I took a few puffs and it was super smooth compared to mine. We hung out for a good two hours chatting away before heading out. Make sure if you come here that everyone wants to be here because they will charge $5 per person if you don't buy anything.

Sephi A.

Yelp
This place is amazing, has a cozy ambiance. And most specially they sell Cigars, although i spent $200 on just a couple drinks and a couple cigars, i can say it was very well worth it!

Olivia G.

Yelp
Service took a long time because it was Halloween & the interior is very smoky (due to the cigars) but the bookshelves are so cute.

Madelaine R.

Yelp
I have never experienced such blatant racism since living in New York over the last few years. I entered the bar with two colleagues around 1:30am on Saturday morning, one of whom was also a woman of color and one man whom was Caucasian. My fellow non-Caucasian and I were kicked out of the bar upon arrival after no visible indicators of intoxication (we'd each had one drink), while my Caucasian colleague who openly admitted to being intoxicated (multiple drinks) was the only one allowed to remain. Upon my Caucasian friend complaining to the staff after I left, they simply stated that "they know how people like me (mixed race) are." I cannot with good faith ever recommend an establishment with such blatant disregard to race and/or gender.

Raj A.

Yelp
Cute place, although the exhaust could be stronger. Friendly service. Nice classic cocktails and spirits. $12 cutting fee if you bring your own cigars.

Eric R.

Yelp
I smoke a few cigars a week and try lounges wherever I go. Cool vibe inside around the books area, but very small, so I am glad it was a Monday night and we essentially had it to ourselves. There is outside seating as well. Friendly staff. I'm not sure I could afford to go to places like this if I lived in NYC. In our area you buy a cigar for $10 and a beer for $8 or mixed drink for $12-15. They do not have a humidor, so you order off the menu of cigar options and to get a decent cigar you are at $30-35. If you bring your own there is a $15 cutting and lighting fee. 2 cigars and 2 drinks and you are well over $100.

Jo K.

Yelp
This review is for the unprofessional behavior of an employee named "Ajay" ( not sure if that's his real name). This man allowed his friend - a patron - to grab a female patron (my friend) as she was coming out of the bathroom. He refused to listen to the formal verbal complaint of my friend and tried justifying his friend putting hands on another patron. I highly urge the company to investigate this employee.

Ryan P.

Yelp
Been coming here since 2018 and it's been one of my favorite hidden gems in the city. Amazing atmosphere, great drinks and good cigars, especially their house cigars. For as long as I can remember, Fernanda has always been an exceptional host and always does her best to make sure each guest is enjoying themselves.

Trey H.

Yelp
Amazing bar for an amazing wiskey and scotch list. Its well decorated, intimate setting immediately makes you feel warm. I love cigars, so the smell of quality cigars is comforting to me, but your clothes will most certainly smell the same after enjoying the establishment. So if you're not a smoker, have asthma, or anyone in your party, I would not suggest the indoor area (they have a patio!).

Kimberly H.

Yelp
I stumbled upon this place while I was on the way to an Italian restaurant. Something said the only ones Kim go in, you need a drink. I'm so glad I came in. This has got to be one of the classiest bars I've been to in the area.

Corky L.

Yelp
Hudson Bar and Books was once a great place to have a drink and cigar. No more. When we first arrived I noticed it was empty. There's a reason for that. We ordered 3 different cigars and they were sold out of all of them. We finally found one they still had and was so dry it flaked and fell apart. When the bill came I noticed they tried to charge us for the more expensive cigars they were out of. I pointed it out to the waitress who understood the mistake. Suddenly, the bar tender/ manager came charging at us like an angry primate shaking his cage and said "I served y'all 2 cigars!" That's right, Einstein, but they were different cigars and different prices. Finally he said "oh, they be 2 different prices." No "I'm sorry about that" no "sorry for the confusion." This idiot has no business running a business like this. No hospitality training or even manners, let alone class. Don't go here. There are cigar bars in Manhattan that are nice. This is a dump run by untrained fools.

Albert K.

Yelp
Expensive and smelly, but if you go in knowing that, it is a ton of fun. Staff are attentive. Whisky and cigar selection is excellent. Martini was well done also. Cigar prices are high, but where else can you smoke one with good drinks? Staff are professional and courteous. Fun vibes all around and everybody there is open to converse.

Ted O.

Yelp
I love this place. I did not have a cigar with me, which is rare, so I bought one of theirs. That is why the 4 out of 5 stars, they need to up their selection. I had one of their labels, it was a 3 our of 5. One my next visit I will bring my own cigar, happly pay the cutting fee, and it would be a 5 our of 5. The cocktail was excellent. The employees are all in suites, impeccably dressed and well manored. Such a cozy and wonderful place to hang out on a rainy cold afternoon.

Jerry G.

Yelp
I frequented the bar on several occasions. The venue is small, but there is a private room off to the side with a piano; I have never seen it in use. The seating is limited, and the space is narrow. The bar is the main feature of the room, followed by a somewhat small, comfy seating enclave in the rear of the venue. The service is sketchy, and I have had rude experiences on two occasions. One occasion involved one of the wait staff trying to persuade me from sitting in the enclave area. This area is sometimes roped off. Last night it was roped off so an old fellow (likely the owner) with a young lady could have the entire space to themselves. Now mind you, this venue is not plush at all; it's a neighborhood dive trying to be classy. That same night, after having left STK's bar, I stopped in for a smoke and ordered a margarita. It was poorly mixed with inferior ingredients. I asked the waitress to switch it for an IPA, to keep it simple. I figured if you can't mix a simple drink, go for a beer instead. The waitress immediately objected and went to a manager. She came back with the beer. I finished my beer and smoke and vowed never to return.

Ty H.

Yelp
Oh my god what a great find. I love the bar scene. Smoked a madoro cigar that was great. The Cabernet Sauvignon was great. Lots of fun people there.

Cyrus P.

Yelp
Macanudo is stuffy. This isn't. Good sticks. Good prices. Good service. All I want when I crave a cigar is a space where no one complains about cigar smoke and I can do some reading. This was perfect.

Rachel S.

Yelp
I absolutely love the atmosphere here. The whiskey selection is on point and grabbing a drink surrounded by books is an absolute dream.

Harrison S.

Yelp
Amazing! Great customer service, beautiful decor, love the 007 theme. This is a place that will make you feel cared for, welcomed, and special. Good vibe and classy patrons...nobody loud or dressed obnoxiously

Ken L.

Yelp
I walked in here looking for a place to have a drink in Meatpacking after shopping in the area. I was Not expecting it to be what it was upon entrance from the outside. 1. It's a cigar bar - doesn't bother me,,, I enjoy the smell of cigars 2. It had a very sexy/masculine/old world feel too it. Dim lit, tin ceilings, cool old school photographs, a wall of books in the back you can pick from and read if you want. 3. Tried about 4 different cocktails from the menu... each one was better then the next... if you are in the area and this sounds like something you may enjoy I would definitely check it out

Scott W.

Yelp
Great little place. Not pretentious or fratty. Our waiter Paul was amazing. They let you bring your own nicotine, too, for a small fee. Chicken samosas were excellent.

Bob D.

Yelp
I am an avid cigar smoker, in fact I run my own cigar group for 13 years. I was here last night with a couple of my buddies. We were here about 3 1/2 hours drinking/smoking and having a good time. We were paying our separate tabs at the same time each with our own cc. I signed the check and gave it with my credit card. He gave it back to me and 20 seconds later he asked for my cc again because it did not process correctly. One minute later he gives me back the card. I tell him this is not my card. Meanwhile my 2 buddies cc were returned with their cards switched. Bartender claims he returned my card before, then he said he gave it another patron who left. Meanwhile their were about 15 people at the place and I was sitting by the door, no one left in the last hour. I am handicap and had access a ride waiting for me all this time outside (They will only wait 5 minutes pass your pickup time, he waited 15 minutes and left) I explained the situation to the manager and the waitress. They all look for the card and couldn't find it. It seem the bartender & manager couldn't care less. They bought me and one of my buddies a free drink to calm us down. Big Deal ! Then the bartender asks me for another cc. I refused to pay unless they found my card. Then we left. How the hell can you lose a cc in one minute when you were always behind the bar! It cost about $60 to go home by Uber ( Access a ride is $2.80) They call me 10 minutes after I left and wanted me to come back. Yeah right! I cancel the card when I got home but they may sure they took out for my bill. I now have to go to all my sites and change the cc for automatic payments. I really like this place but won't be back and will not do any cigar events here. I did have a problem in 2016 (which you can read in reviews) and came back since 2018. I really like this place but not worth the aggravation.

Joshua A.

Yelp
Owner went one racist rant on how black lives don't matter and how the whole movement is just to create crime and robbing spree while talking to other guest. I was just trying to enjoy my dinner with my wife we were celebrating our 5 th anniversary and this was the worst experience we been through so much this past month and I hope this day will shine a bit a turn things around and we had to heal this racist banter all night

Adam L.

Yelp
Nice looking place. $$$ cigar service was very good. Open late. Very small. If the prices were lower then it would be four stars. It is definitely up scale. I'd go go again because of the late hours. If price isn't a concern then it's a go

Audrey T.

Yelp
This place has an enclosed outdoor sit down setup during COVID - it's warmer than most other places during winter time but that also means it has less air ventilation and social distance. The drinks are decent, but they only allow one hour per drink.

Caitlin D.

Yelp
My favorite bar in the west village, been going for 10 years and it's consistently perfect.

Peter I.

Yelp
I love this place. A perfect retreat from the world as we know it. You walk in and are wrapped in the light scent of cigar and see the bar for the first time. You feel happy to be here and that's enough for the time being. The staff welcomes you and makes suggestions about drinks, small bites and hands you a cigar menu. Life is good right now. I had a robusto and those cashews (order them and see) with a beautiful old fashioned! All perfect. The service is old school and really well done old school style. From the presentation of your drink to the matches and ashtray... All 5 star! My new home in NYC!

Bill S.

Yelp
Man, Why all the review haters? Tell me another place in NYC where you can still smoke and drink? Hudson Bar & Books is one of the few remaining places where you can order a good Scotch and smoke a cigar. Here is the kick in the nads to light up: You buy one of their $35 cigars or you can pay a $10 up charge and bring your own cigar. Kinda sucks but you can still light up and smoke. The vibe to me isn't clubby, I really didn't want to engage in any conversation. I want to drink my Manhattan, smoke a very expensive cigar and book out. *Here's a trick. Sit outside and smoke whatever the hell you want and have a drink with no up charge. This is a once in six months place for me, Its too expensive.

Esther K.

Yelp
I sat down for maybe 5-10 minutes with my best friend. The person who served us at 12pm on Friday night came by our table three times in five minutes to the point where the couple next to us even pointed out how rude he was Not saying my review will change anything,. But I'm pointing out the lack of customer service and why we got up and left because I don't need to argue with our server, especially as someone who's also been in the same industry. Please work on your service and attitude. It really makes an impression on people. I do not know your name: but please consider it.

Rob G.

Yelp
Great place to go and relax with a cigar after a hard day of work But one thing make sure you are well dressed with a button down other wise they might give you issues going in Other wise the cigars you have lots of options and the drinks are amazing as well The service is of course 5 star But again make sure you are well dressed if you wanna go in

Victoria N.

Yelp
Cool vibe cigar bar with enclosed outdoor seating, perfect for a rainy day. I see a lot of professors show up here to enjoy a cigar or cocktail while reading papers.

Chip R.

Yelp
Bottom line: Hudson Bar and Books is a great place to unwind, enjoy a good stiff drink with a cigar, and just let the world pass by for a bit. Great atmosphere to soak in, but do be aware it can come with a premium price tag with some things. I am a fan of HB&B! The Deets: We've headed into Hudson Bar and Books a couple of times on weekends. Looking at it on Yelp, it appeared like a great place to kick back and enjoy some down time. If you have some time to kill, I'd say come by here and do it. Hudson Bar and Books is one of those whiskey and bourbon bars/cigar bars/cocktail bars that luckily has lasted when most of this type have run their course. Inside there is a dark wood finish surrounding you like a old study or library, and I like that vibe...books on personal library type shelves kind of appearance, etc. However, it's pretty narrow so be prepared as it is not huge and spacious. The bar staff are neatly attired, courteous, and focused on high end type of service. It makes you feel like it's a special thing to come and enjoy a drink or cigar there. If you are looking for a cheap afternoon's diversion then HB&B may not be your place. Its premium type of atmosphere does come with a somewhat premium price tag for certain things. So long as you are good with that, you'll enjoy your time here. Be aware of that as you peruse the menu. Even the cigar choices are a bit high. Also be aware that there is a $5.00 "cutting fee" even if you bring your own stogies. Other than that, I love to drink in the atmosphere...have a cigar, a whiskey/bourbon/scotch, and just soak in the feel of this place. If cigars are not your thing, try one of their custom cocktails in a unique setting. Definitely worth a stop in if you get a chance.

Donivan A.

Yelp
Got to love it stellar whisky and scotch collection have a nice drink and cigar like the refined dapper gentlemen you are

Jaime P.

Yelp
Nice average cosy spot but ambiance isn't as upscale as I'd like, like Club Macanudo. Service is also average.

Roger M.

Yelp
Excellent little cigar lounge with all the right elixirs! Scotch and Bourbons from all over the world. All the right years and grand selection of House Cigars for the proper disconnect. Lively crowd at times. Wednesdays are chill. Thursdays more busy. Nice for corporate meetings with the boys.

Derrick J.

Yelp
Last week, after I finished DJing a gala in NYC, I decided to head over to Hudson Bar & Books for a drink and cigar before going home. Two of my good friends joined me at bar and we enjoyed a wonderful two hour conversation about life and politics. At the end of the night, as we were saying our goodbyes, the owner of the bar, Raju Mirchandani, overheard our conversation while he was attempting to take a picture and said to the three of us, "I don't like black people." One of my buddies, who happens to be a middle age white guy, pushed the owner away from us. Anyone that knows me well always knew where to find me whenever I was home in NYC. I've frequented that particular bar for years. I've met a lot of good friends there. It's safe to say that I will never step foot inside of his establishment again. I'll spend my money and time somewhere else. A place where black people are welcomed.

Alan W.

Yelp
Great selection of cigars and drinks. The vibe inside is that of a English-mystery-novel / private library type of vibe, if that makes any sense. Good customer services, comfortable seating, and not noisy inside.

Jacomina G.

Yelp
I will admit that my review of this place is contaminated by some of the past reviews that I saw post visiting this place (self reminder to not read reviews before posing my own). I'd say that if you're looking for a bar that allows smoking, this is your place to go. Not only do they allow smoking cigars (own or bought at the place), they also allow customers to smoke cigarettes. The cocktails that we had (monkey business and monkey love) were VERY good. However, the monkey servant lamps and the post I read about them having a Trump banner made me lower their stars. Again, this is very tainted by the previous reviews, as I did not come across a Trump banner. Either way, I do not approve of the monkey lamps and I wish they banned cigarette smoking.

Mykel B.

Yelp
We came here at the suggestion of our cigar-smoking Drink Club NYC member. This bar has a sister bar uptown... but it has a strict dress code. This place is less formal. It's a tight squeeze and narrow space. If you can, make for the couch seating in the back. We scored that and were very comfortable as our smoker smoked. (If you don't like the smell of cigars, don't come here... or sit in the small front outdoor space... We love that smell). The waitstaff was helpful and friendly. The food selection was limited, but the cheese platter and Hudson Pizza were both very good. The TV showed old movies... so no sports idiots and the noise level was great for conversation. It's a nice place to go if one (or more) of you likes cigars, and the rest want to just enjoy the atmosphere. --Drink Club NYC is a roving group of NYC drinkers... a different bar every week

Alex M.

Yelp
I'll preface by saying that we came in the middle of the afternoon on a Sunday. The place wasn't very busy, so we were able to get a cozy table in the corner. I'm not that old, so I'd never really been to a place like this. Kind of cool to see the old-fashioned vibe. I don't smoke, and neither do my friends, but they had a very extensive cigar list, ranging from very inexpensive, to more pricey, based on your taste. The drink menu here is also very robust, with a wide selection of dark liquors and cocktails that accurately reflect the theme of this place. The decor is pretty intricate, and they have a small outdoor seating area if you find the smoke to be too overwhelming inside.

Jonathan C.

Yelp
Made a reservation for this place but then my friend told me about their Trump banner. I called to ask if it was for real and the guy was dodgy. So I cancelled the reservation and that was that. If you like Trump, consider this a 5 star establishment. If you don't like Trump, this rating is accurate for you.

Peter K.

Yelp
The one bright side of Hudson Bar & Books: the library section in the rear. Everywhere else was a congestion nightmare. Case in point: the restroom. I think if you came here in a group of four or less it would be a good venue; otherwise you would find it to be more difficult to mingle. I noticed the waitstaff with white tuxedos and waitresses (who never smiled) with red suits. Maybe it was their policy to be stoic. I believe the staff would be good candidates as "statues" in an up and coming movie. I thought service was ok. My delicious Pinot Noir was poured with an initial taste. Maybe I need to wear a smoking jacket more often to get respect around here. Padron Anniversario 1964s and 1926s for $35+? Geez. HBB is a small bar. It's too small to be a good cigar bar, though. I'd rather return to: Club Mac (http://www.yelp.com/biz/club-macanudo-new-york), Circa Tabac (http://www.yelp.com/biz/cafe-circa-tabac-new-york), or even Carnegie Club (http://www.yelp.com/biz/the-carnegie-club-new-york). I only came here for Cigar Night II (http://www.yelp.com/biz/cigar-night-part-deux-hudson-bar-and-books-new-york) and will probably not return. For those driving in, there is only one parking garage nearby (across the street). Unfortunately it was full when I tried to park. Rats. IFHTP 1

Viridiana D.

Yelp
Great place for good whiskey and cigar pairing. Friendly staff and 007 theme all the bar.... small spot but great vibe.

Spencer A.

Yelp
Great place to enjoy a cigar and some of the best company in NYC. Service is extremely good- given the tight quarters. One of NYCs best cigar bars.

Rick R.

Yelp
Incredible quality and service. Like going back in time, Bar & Books transports you to another world. Drink selections are like none other and the ambience is unmatched. Really impressive all around. I also like that when enjoying your drink or cigar, you can pick out a book to read. The staff is amazing and the owner is a true gentleman. Cannot wait to come back!

Corey H.

Yelp
Popped in this gem during the fall for an evening drink with friends. This swanky feeling cigar bar is the ultimate New York feel. I ordered an Old Fashioned, which was done to perfection- $17 for a cocktail is pretty competitive in the city so it wasn't shocking. Definitely a place to hit with a few friends or nice place to drop by alone for an after work cocktail.

Jin K.

Yelp
I hate to give a cigar bar less than stellar review (especially given the limited number of them in NY), but I have to say this is my least favorite of the cigar lounge/bars in the city. The cigar selection and the markups are terrible here. It's one thing to have just your own house cigars like Velvet Lounge (which I love), but if you're going to sell branded cigars, at least have a decent selection. Although the drink selections are large, I think those are marked up too much as well. Even though the space is imtimate, I find that the service staff here are on the colder side and are don't go out of their way to make you feel welcome. A cigar lounge should make you feel welcome and you should be able to have a pleasant conversation with the host/hostess. Even at Club Macanudo which is much larger and crowded have staff that are much more personable. BTW, I've been to the Lexington Bar & Books as well and although the limited selection and mark-ups are the same, I thought the host there was much better.

Justin C.

Yelp
I wasn't as impressed this place as I was hoping to be. I usually frequent Circa Tabac, and maybe i'm just used to it, but Hudson was mediocre. It's smaller then expected as well. The venting is decent, not great. The cigar selection is small, but you can find something for anyone's taste. Scotch selection is good as well. It's just not a comfortable feeling place. The one part that looked amazing though was the couches up on the platform where the books were. This probably changes the whole experience of being there. Will I go back, probably not...

Liz M.

Yelp
I had a couple of whiskey loving friends in town and I personally have been dying to come here. The service was wonderful. We sat on the patio because the night was so beautiful. If you are a newbie to whiskey, or looking to try a few types I recommend coming in Tuesday when they have a selection at a discount so you can really experience the place. I think my favorite detail was that they cut your cigars for you, and it's not just a clean cut they had the option of a vcutter which I prefer. Loved this. I had a house cigar (I believe it was the Bar and Books Toro) and Aberlour A'Bunadh Cask on the rocks. They bring the whiskey out to you neat with a small vat of ice so you can add when ever you like.
