I got the beef mince pie and my partner got the steak and stout pie. We loved THEM! The service took a bit of time for them to say hello and seat us— there were only a few tables in at the time and to get our bill. Either than that, everything was lovely. Highly recommend this place to visit and the beef mince. I prefer it to the steak and ale, but that’s just my opinion :)

What a unique and unexpected experience! Having traveled to northern Yorkshire for the day, we walked the shopping district and happened upon this quaint restaurant in a building and ties with deep history dating back to King Charles I's era. Having had bangers and mash and these steak pie for the first time, both were SO good! Everything was drizzled with this yummy gravy, which was so good we had to ask for more. The restaurant decor made it feel like you were sitting in a real pub back in the 1700s. The service was super friendly and fast!

Home made pie with mash. We had enough fish and chips so decided to have pie and mash for lunch. I did not regret it. It is a very nice place with a quirky atmosphere and delicious food at a reasonable price. Bill for 2 came up £32

Fantastic step back in time to around 1940's at this great little pie shop. Very immersive experience from the decor, music and even the enamel plates and China cups and saucers. It's a walk in service, so no reservations, we were lucky to not have to wait for our table. We both opted for different pies, steak & ale and chicken & leek. Both came with mashed potato and a choice of mushy or garden peas. Lots of very tasty gravy too. Food was delicious and very reasonably priced. Well worth a visit!!

As a couple, we had been highly recommended to try this place. When we arrived, luckily there was no queue and we found a seat straight away. We had been warned that it gets very busy, so to expect to have to wait. The server was extremely friendly and very attentive. Considering she was the only one greeting, taking orders and serving, she did an amazing job. We could not fault the service at all. I can't say that there was an atmosphere as such, but an enjoyable visit. We ordered a pie each, one with mash and one without. One with mushy peas, one with garden peas. When they came, they both had mushy peas. It was no issue to have the plate taken away and changed, immediately being brought back to us. However, we can't say we were overly enamoured with the pies, or the mash. The mash was flavourless. Could have done with a little bit of seasoning, and being more creamy. It was bland and tasted quite starchy and watery. The steak & ale pie was also very bland. It consisted of only steak, gravy and pastry. We would have thought there would have been some mushroom or onion, or both in with it. The sausage and black pudding pie, also very bland. There was just a wedge of sausage meat, with 3 tiny specks of black pudding in it. Considering the pies are made with locally sourced products, we felt they were almost like frozen pies that had been heated up. Although the review probably feels like it's all negative, that is not the point I am trying to make. Just a few hints for the business to maybe improve on. We are pleased we have finally managed to visit. And would go again in the future.

A charming little spot that truly lives up to its name. The pie was excellent—rich, flavorful, and perfectly baked. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the mushy peas, not usually my go-to! The atmosphere was something special—like stepping into a time machine. Quaint, cozy, and full of character.

Super friendly greeting in ancient buillding, with Blue Moon playing. And other 30s music. Funky, old decor was delightful. Sadly, three people came to ask for the only vegan pie they did not have today. I wish it had been temporarily removed from the menu. The mash and gravy were vegan with a choice of mushy or whole peas. Yummy food and beautiful service. No vegan milk for tea. No vegan desserts. Still loved it.

Yelp
Really great pie shop in Whitby, affordable and huge portions. Great service and love that since they don't have drinks on site they suggest you grab them from the pub next door! Wish I had more room in my stomach to try all the pies they had! Service was also excellent :) Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area!

Yelp
I am a definite regular to here when I come to whitby, I love the place, I have queued outside in the cold impatiently on many occasions! Such good value, and always lovely staff, lovely quaint place, with dining space both upstairs and down, so don't be alarmed, that queue goes down quicker than you think. Originally, I was reluctantly pulled in here by a particularly awful ex, but, am I glad he did! Vintage tunes on the radio, and the best pies I've had that I didn't bake myself. Reasonably priced and served with lump free mash, good green peas (none of the over boiled grey ones here, thankfully!) and a good amount of gravy, though they will happily oblige with a little boat if you want more. Pick from tea, camp coffee, and every fentimans pop you can get your mitts on, to go with your haggis and keeps/lamb and mint/steak and ale/ sausage and black pudding/hommity/ chicken and cider, roast veg and goats cheese, mince and onion, and they do do specials, the turkey christmas ice is pretty lovely. They do run out sometimes, it's always busy, but everything I've had there has been lovely, and you're sat at tables cluttered with every condiment you could want too. Good to note that they are also happy to let dogs in too.

Yelp
Such a cozy, quaint little restaurant serving some of the best pies I've ever tasted. All the pies are homemade on the premises and are served on an enamelled plate with a big pile of mash, peas and gravy. The portion sizes are huge, I couldn't finish my mash and the pie I chose (steak and stout) was so tasty and full to the brim of chunks of melt in the mouth beef, a far cry from most pies where you struggle to actually find the meat! Priced at just £5.99 you can't go wrong here, a delicious filling meal and a bargain to boot. They also serve a modest range of deserts (although I didn't get to sample any due to being too full) including jam roly poly with custard, and Mississippi mud pie although these change regularly. I found it refreshing to see a drinks menu that didn't look the same as every other restaurant around. They even serve camp coffee for coffee lovers out there, not being a huge lover of coffee myself I decided to play it safe with a bottle of dandelion and burdock which brought back childhood memories, so much so that in my return home I had to go and but a bottle! The building itself is beautiful, an old timber framed building, parts of which are speculated to be medieval. On the walls there is a display cabinet full of all the curiosities discovered when the building was renovated, there is so much to look at! Next time I'm in Whitby I'll be heading here for another lovely meal instead of the stereotypical seaside fish and chips which pale in comparison.

Yelp
Humble Pie 'n' Mash is a hidden gem. When I walk past the restaurant I long for dinner time so I can go in. Every thing about this place is spot on. The restaurant is housed in a tiny old shop complete with inglenook fireplace and vintage decorations. The fire is always roaring, the tables always covered with pretty tablecloths and the service like popping round to a friend's house for supper. The food is beautiful, really, really good stuff. Lovely pies and fresh, creamy mash served in tin pie dishes. I've never quite managed a pudding because the pies are really filling but my husband and father in law ensure me they are fantastic. Seriously, this is the real Whitby. This isn't the tourist Whitby this is Whitby. Miss it at your peril.

Yelp
We'd had a strong recommendation to try Humble Pie on a previous visit to Whitby, and been balked when it turned out to be closed (New Year), so we were very keen to try again. The menu looked very encouraging with a mix of comfort/tradition and novelty. We sat upstairs and enjoyed the nostalgic atmosphere and intriguing photos and bric-a-brac. Service was extremely fast and friendly. The pies were large but not overpowering, served with peas and perfect mash in enamel deep enamel plates, piping hot and so so tasty, and the price is amazing £4.99 for a really satisfying lunch, and a good mug of tea at £1.25. (They serve Camp coffee but I take this to be purely for historical accuracy, as it's so horrible they also offer 'normal coffee'.) Altogether a totally positive experience and we will certainly be back.

Yelp
Don't be put off from the appear when you enter. The somewhat well worn look of the place and steamy interior could be off putting. The real reason to stay is the food. Pies are freshly made with mash, and peas. You can pop across the road and bring back a cold pint to drink while you eat some of the best pies in all of Yorkshire. Charming, inexpensive and delicious food. A real winner. Dog and kid friendly as well.

Yelp
Pie Gravy Peas all for a fiver. We took the advice of our B & B owner and ate here for dinner. It was totally worth it everything is made in house and I mean everything the pastry crust the mash the filling. The whole shop just smells good think of Mrs Lovetts Pie shop in Sweeney Todd without the mashed up body parts and horrible pies. Its very small with only about 7 tables but its worth the wait if the tables are full. They do take away as well with the average time taking 15 to 20 minutes. They dont serve any beer or wine but from what Im told they will allow you to bring a bottle of your own. They do desserts that change everyday my wife got a jam roly poly which from what I was told was amazing and also hard to find in resturants now a days but it was served piping hot with freshly made custard. This place is the definition of a hole in the wall but it does what it says on the tin. HUMBLE PIE AND MASH and trust me its worth it.

Yelp
I dreamt about the black pud & yorkshire sausage pie for weeks after eating it. As an American, it taught me that there's more to pie than just sweet fruit filling. I would absolutely recommend this place. I can't wait to return.

Yelp
What a great find this little place is! As the name suggests, they just provide pies and mash, but the range of pies is good and the items themselves are fantastic and only £5. Proper pastry, lovely mash and peas and served in enamel bowls! I had a great sausage and black pudding pie. Space inside is limited but the atmosphere is very welcoming, and he staff really friendly. Try it, you won't be disappointed.
