Where to Stay Near Redwood National Park | Condé Nast Traveler

"On Humboldt Bay’s Samoa Peninsula, I liked the boutique property’s mix of wood‑detailed suites and expansive extended‑stay cabins (both dog‑friendly), its cedar sauna, on‑site dining and bar (the Lobby Bar serves a bucket of oysters), outdoor grills and locally made provisions; suites offer vintage furniture and compact amenities while cabins have full kitchens for longer stays." - Jill K. My plans fell through for my fifty birthday. So I decided to do something local. I am so glad I did. This place is very special. Tucked in next to the ocean and Oyster beach. Just a short hike to the ocean from your room. All the rooms come with a soaking tub. Each room comes with everything you to unplug, unwind, and relax. They offer massages and a cedar sauna. I highly recommend doing both. So many cute little nooks with fire pits or gas fire places to get cozy around. It's kid friendly and dog friendly. They offer food but you can bring your own and buy a grilling kit. This place will heal your soul. Book now because they only offer 4 suites.

Rooms are somewhat primitive, but nice. Well stocked with snacks and a great beach cart with chairs, a cooler, blanket and bucket for collecting whatever. The social club has fantastic grill kits of burgers, dogs, or oysters. Staff was welcoming and made the visit great. A fantastic get away!

Well appointed and designed. Great amenities. Very thoughtful. Communication was decent but had to chase for our check in info (it's self check in). Super comfortable rooms. Didn't try any food. Would totally recommend!

Recently had a fantastic stay at Humboldt Bay Social Club. Their set up is so cozy and homey and still amazing design quality. BEST GF/DF tuna melt I have ever had. The new sauna is HOT and euphoric. Also got a in room massage and that really set the town for the day! Comfy beds, killer amenities, fun staff, and fresh sea air.

Absolutely love this hidden gem! Me and my family come for karaoke every Wednesday night and have an amazing time! I wish more people knew about this place!

I came up for a couple of days to just unwind at the beach. I called in advance to consult about which room would be best to accommodate me and my small dog and was given a great recommendation and a quick booking process over the phone. The room was great and the service was even better. Solveig was a warm host with expert local knowledge, a no-fuss demeanor, and a great conversationalist and bartender. The beach is within walking distance and added the perfect sunset to my already great trip. Highly recommend the HBSC if you need a relaxing getaway with great service.

Google
I LOVED my stay here. The rooms are so well thought-out and beautiful. The snacks and drinks for sale in the rooms were reasonably priced and well chosen options. The location is on the beach but private and still near Eureka Downtown AND Arcata downtown. The staff in the bar are friendly and there is a cute space with a gift shop full of locally made gems. I'll definitely be back!

Google
We held our wedding ceremony at Oyster Beach and the reception at the Hangar at the Humboldt Bay Social Club and everything was delightful. The place is rather isolated and rustic - a historic navy airfield among the dunes. The nearby drag strip was loud at times, but did not interfere with our activities. We stayed at the suites and put up our families in the nearby cabins. It was affordable and delightful, and everyone had a great time. The staff were especially helpful, and did everything they could to make our stay comfortable and our event a success. They really went above and beyond. I look forward to staying there again and trying the oysters!

Yelp
This place is a gem. We were in the area visiting the National Park and my partner wanted to come here for oysters. We stayed to hang out, got a tour of the place and it was amazing. Our bartender was great she was friendly had some great conversations with us and made the visit there that much better. We learned a lot about the area and found out she was originally not to far from where we are from. They have a great selection of beers and drinks, oysters and even have veggie dogs for the vegetarians out there. If you're in the area check this place out it's cozy and made for you to stay a while. Definitely want to come back up here and visit again.

Yelp
My girlfriend and I are moving with our cat. We made a reservation here because they say they are pet friendly. Then I double-checked to make sure they allow cats. Nicole replied and said, "Absolutely no cats!" I suggested she should make that clear in their listing and not just say pet friendly. She said, "I am pet friendly, birds, dogs, etc. Just no cats." So... cats aren't pets? The lack of transparency caused us extra hassle and Nicole definitely didn't apologize.

Yelp
I spent my honeymoon here because I had a dream for a romantic walk on the beach the next morning, and was deeply disappointed. Apparently there is a 'drag strip' for loud obnoxious cars to show off early in the morning. This was very unpleasant and ruined the stay for me. I do not recommend staying here if you enjoy sleeping in or romance. P.s. single ply toilet paper is just down right wrong for us ladies... especially for a location at their price point.

Yelp
I am so glad we found this hidden gem! We stayed here for two nights while on a road trip through Northern California. It caught our eye because it was unique and dog friendly. What an experience! For the price of a decent hotel room, we rented Suite 7, the largest of the rooms. We had a private entrance that opened into a large room with two king beds, a table, dresser, TV, mini fridge and microwave, and large open space. Down the hallway was a bathroom. There was a large dressing room with a clawfoot tub, and a shower behind the door, with a small room with a toilet and sink off to the side. Included with the stay were the coffee with a kettle and French press, vodka and whiskey in decanters, granola and almond milk in the fridge, and juice. There were also several items in the fridge and hallway to purchase, like a traditional hotel minibar. There is also a wagon with towels, a cooler, and chairs that you can take to the beach across the street. I am a very light sleeper, but slept very well here. It is very quiet, and the beds were comfortable. The shower was great. If you are tall, you don't have to do a backbend to rinse out your hair! Nearby was a lobby bar and restaurant. It was very casual and comfortable. The bartender was very cool and welcoming. There are some fire pits outside that were really fun in the evenings. When we crossed the street to get to oyster Beach, we saw the bathhouse and some of the other cabins. I had no idea what the bathhouse was, other than that they do offer massages there. But it is also literally a bathhouse. You can go in there and there are two clawfoot tubs that are open to the people staying there. They had towels and soap and shampoo in there. What attracted us was the frogs! My daughter is obsessed with frogs so we had to take a trip over there so she could take a bath next to the frogs. Only a short drive from the city of Eureka, this historic World War II airstrip was an awesome place to stay with our family of four (plus a dog). I would definitely come back here again, and recommend anyone else traveling up north to do the same!

Yelp
We decided to hold our wedding ceremony at Oyster Beach and the reception at the Hangar at the Humboldt Bay Social Club. We also stayed ourselves at the suites, and put up our families in the cabins across the street. Not only was it reasonably priced, it was delightful, and everyone had a good time. The cabins and suites were very comfortable in an appealing rustic style. The beach and Hangar were perfect sites for our ceremony and reception, and the staff made it very easy to coordinate deliveries with other businesses. I want to highlight how very helpful, supportive, and enthusiastic all of the staff we worked with really were. Everyone - the management, bar tender, cleaning staff - every employee was polite, helpful, and supremely competent. Our wedding would not have been such a great success if it were not for the work of these women. I hope my wife and I have the opportunity to stay there again and to enjoy the oysters!

Yelp
Suite 6 is not a great choice. What I liked Granola and almond milk included. Nice way to start the day. Coffee was good. I like French press. Plenty of snacks Comfy bed. The grounds were cool The lounge was cool. Bartender was really nice Great Merch WHAT WAS NOT GREAT: The overall design was amateurish. The art was out of proportion to the space. Weird mirror above couch should have been in the bathroom. "Crown molding " is just a quarter round trim piece. Looks very funky. Heat not working. It was 50 inside our room. Space heaters worked but were very dirty..see photos. I guess we could have lit the furnace that was off. but the area rug was under/in the unit. Fire hazard The description Kitchenette is a HUGE stretch. Just a mini fridge that doubled as a mini bar for the hotel. No place to prep food. There were notes about food items included at no charge, except for the items on the cart in the bedroom...were they included? The items on the cart were snacks and liquor. Items like these were on a menu in the fridge for a charge but the items in the bedroom were not Noted anywhere. The bathroom was sub par . See photos. No place to put toiletries. A shelf would solve this. Tiny mirror to apply makeup. The big mirror is in the living room above the couch. Weird shower drain you need to straddle. Super Slow draining sink. No heat. Towels were not soft. Oh and when I went to slide the barn door style door open it came off the tracks and landed on my husband The photos on the site are misleading. There we were looking out our window at a giant gravel parking lot. Not cute fire pits or nature. The comforter cover had holes in it. It is misleading to say you are a boutique hotel but charge a separate cleaning fee. Hotels build the cleaning into their price. Super tacky and if you charge the fee the place should be ship shape. It wasn't.

Yelp
Go to for hang outs, birthdays, and anything else I can do there. Love the chill vibe and that we can sit around the campfire. Service is great! Love the tots from the Jetty and the bar has a great menu, too.

Yelp
A few more bits and pieces to share as our stay progresses.... #10: Had thr pleasure of enduring several helicopter fly-bys and touch-and-go's on the 3rd night of our stay at 9:30 at night. So much fun with a toddler trying to sleep. Not sure what was going on or why or how often it occurs, but just an extra bit of joy. #11: No toilet lid or large bathroom mirror: HBSC, PLEASE put a toilet lid on your toilet. Yet another aggravating aspect to the funky, miserable bathroom--not only is there no place to set your stuff, there is also no place to sit down your duff. So aggravating. As is the fact that there is a huge mirror in the living room across from the television screen, but not in thr bathroom where people would ordinarily fix themselves up, despite there being 2 blank walls in the bathroom that could easily accommodate a mirror. Again, have I mentioned this place cost us $250 a night?! #12: Despite the absence of counter space, am electric tea kettle and coffee press sit precariously on top of a microwave that barely has its four feet on a piece of plywood sitting on top of the mini-fridge. For crying out loud! Just give me a dang COFFEE MAKER! One of those cheap plastic ones that weighs all of 2 pounds and won't make me balance the Mad Hatter's tea shenanigans on a perilous wooden slat! Plus, there is no complimentary tea bags and only one tiny pouch of ground coffee (enough for maybe 4-5 cups). So what's the point of such a set up?! But there are a few nice things to mention about this place. The King bed was very comfortable. The staff at the Lobby Bar were quite kind and approachable. The housekeeping brought me a vacuum within an hour of my calling to leave a message so I could vacuum all the dirt that was in my room. And they do provide a complimentary cocktail per adult with yoru stay.

Yelp
The HBSC is a humboldt chill vibe, located on the grounds of the old Somoa Airfield, yes its a runway, the old air station and the hangars open for semi outside seating as well. There is a limited bar menu, in the Lobby Bar, with a nice selection of local beers, ciders and wines, along with beach, island, comfort bar food menu thats limited and pretty tasty, After perusing the short menu, I decided to go with the Cubano, a grilled panini style sandwich loaded with pulled pork, ham and cheese with a side of the mac salad. A really good grilled sandwich, very flavorful with a good crunch to bite and it held up nicely. Along with the Loaded Tater Tots, the tots come with the option of pulled pork and bacon for $3 bucks more so of course, really load em! These golden brown potato bits of yumminess with melted cheese, succulent pulled pork and fried bacon topped with a few thinly sliced green onions and a light crema There are lots of options for libations and non alcohol beverages alike, and though its a small "bar" surprizingly the selection is well rounded with several local choices. There is a small interior seating area, but outside is where its at, I mean you're on an island on the pacific ocean why sit inside on such a nice afternoon... The sitting area is really spread out for all of the outside seating, fire pit groups, grills and picnic tables in at least half a dozen locations spread out, with several picnic tables across the large open spance that sits between the old airport and hangars that (think of an old airfield its that open) is across the runway from the main building. On a sunny nice day this is the place to be. Well worth the trek out and definitely will return to enjoy another day in the sun. a Solid 4 Stars 00733

Yelp
If you're looking for the menu online, make sure you get the one that includes the paninis, because there's one that looks like it's all self cooking - which is great if that's what you want to do. We went to see a friend in a band playing there - really fun. The loaded tots are amazing (waaaaay too much for one person), the grilled sandwiches really tasty. You can hang out in the open air or go in the hangar - it's all comfortable for just hanging out. The one slightly odd thing is the bathroom. Singular. The sign says "everyone". The toilet stalls are like little closets, so no one will see anything, but the sinks are shared. To me... no big deal. But be forewarned if you get wiggy about this kind of thing.

Yelp
I gave this establishment ample amount of time to respond to my email before I put a complaint on here, so be it. My wife and son had a couple night stay with them. We didn't finish it because of the poor attitude/ customer service, and overall look of this motel(at best). We got into our room and the lock doesn't work, the walls were paper thin and you could hear everything the next person in the next room did. Also, there was ZERO moving air. As we just came from the beach, we thought we'd go to dinner there but since it said, " no substitutes". My whole family and I are allergic to certain things, so either all they do is warm up stuff or they are just picky and won't help. All in all, horrible service from staff, no security, literal shack, and horrible communication as they never wrote me back.

Yelp
Humboldt Bay Social Club is a fun place to hang out in what look's like someone's living room or recreation room - and have a few drinks. DO NOT COME HERE IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A FULL ON BAR EXPERIENCE OR TO EAT A MEAL - AND THEN WHINE ABOUT IT ON YELP BECAUSE YOU DID NOT DO YOUR RESEARCH. You enter the area known as the "Lobby Bar" - which is open to the public. Humboldt Bay Social Club offers a limited beer, wine, and cocktail menu - meaning, for example, that they offer several cocktails that are on the menu - but they are not set up to make other cocktails and drinks that are not on the menu. How do I know? I asked the barkeep! I sat at the bar and ordered an IPA from local craft brewery Six Rivers Brewery (McKinleyville, CA). There is an extremely limited list of food options to be experienced to snack on - for example - a number of different pickled veggies. The guy next to me snagged the last small jar of pickles - and he offered to let me try one after the bartender checked in the back - and returned to advise they were fresh out of the pickled cucumbers - man were those some delicious pickled cuces! They also offer pickled Jicama, carrots, and Brussel sprouts to snack on. You can also order certain foods "to go" - these food items are not cooked or prepped. You have to take them somewhere and then cook them - for example, you can purchase a bag of oysters - then take them somewhere and shuck or cook them. You cannot order oysters to "eat in" at the Lobby Bar @ Humboldt Bay Social Club. You can also order baskets of other foods, such as smoked salmon, cheeses, crackers, salami, etc. Cool, fun place to hang out! #HumboldtBaySocialClub

Yelp
This is a PSA. Catfished is what I read another reviewer call it. We drove up the coast and looked forward to a comfortable stay by the beach and chose this place based on the amazing photos on AirBnB and reviews on Google etc. But when we got to town- we drove another 15 mins around and through a very industrial logging area with tons of factories. We turned right into a gravel parking lot - no beach to be found- and pulled up to a very run down building in an isolated place with rust and paint peeling off salt beaten siding. We walked up to Suite 6 and there was rusty furniture and personal items right by the door. That turned out to be their "amenities." The room itself was pretty and decorated cute. But the bathroom was really small and not as pictured. The creepiest was the location. It's an old military barracks attached to a dive bar in the middle of an airstrip. There was an airplane doing tricks overhead when we were there which as really loud. Had we known it was an airstrip- we would never have chosen to stay there. There are no people around except for some rough looking men pulling up to the bar. We quickly packed up and left. This place vibed like the Bates Motel and the isolated location made it an absolute NO GO! Do yourself a favor Find somewhere else to stay. You'll be glad you did

Yelp
Cool Vibes. The 2 King room is huge, clean and comfy. It has a claw foot bathtub, separate toilet and shower. The bar is nice. The people here are very inviting. I think it is on an abandon air strip and off to the side there is a drag strip. It is in the middle of nowhere.

Yelp
Humboldt Bay Social Club is absolutely one of the coolest places I've ever stayed. From the off-the-beaten-path location to the nicely restored-but-still-rustic buildings to the overall neat aesthetic - it's special! I stayed with my dog for two nights and it was very comfortable - I slept well and didn't experience the noisiness that others did. The bed and linens were cozy, and I liked a lot of the decor as well. Why not five stars? :: I knew that the early fall weather would likely be chilly and my dog is a weirdo that vastly prefers being curled up on the floor inside to being outdoors. Before I came, I asked if dogs were allowed in the restaurant/lodge building. The person I talked to said "yes, on leash." When I arrived, the bartender said nope. Not only was it uncomfortably cold outdoors for us, even near a firepit, but nearly all the dogs there were off leash and definitely NOT on voice control (bad for my dog that doesn't like other dogs). So basically I could order food at the bar and take it to my room. My visions of reading the paper by the fire with dinner and a drink while my dog snoozed quietly at my feet were dashed. That was a bummer. :: The pickings at the restaurant/bar are slim to begin with - and they were out of numerous things on the food menu. Plus, there are very very few options on the cocktail menu...and they're served in plastic cups. It's much much more of a picnic vibe than a restaurant/bar vibe. I'm not fancy but I feel like I should have just stopped at the grocery store on the way in, purchased a better selection of items that were packaged the same way as HBSC's, and just poured my drink into the glass glasses in my room. It would have been a lot nicer. :: There is definitely an in-crowd/desired audience there - younger, hipper, more stylish than me. I felt old/fat/un-cool/un-welcome there. :: The decor felt unfinished. Like, great bed and overall aesthetic but then things like the couch/chair felt like 1980s beige and didn't fit the room in style or size. :: It kinda doesn't feel like anyone is in charge there. When you arrive you just have to figure things out, no one helps you get the lay of the land or tells you what areas have what and what's off limits. Was I just supposed to know how everything works? Yes, they send you check-in instructions and you can get into your room and all that. But...nothing else felt actually welcoming and helpful. All in all, I sort of feel like HBSC is a set. Like, the owners bought it and fixed it all up and it looks good in photos but the experience of it just doesn't match the picture. After all that, why four stars? Because it really is a highly unique and original property and that's important to have in this world! I appreciate the expense and care the owners put into it. I just wish it extended it to the day-in, day-out experience.

Yelp
Since I'm a Humboldt local, I can't speak to the overnight lodgings that the Social Club offers, but I can definitely vouch for the atmosphere it provides! On my most recent visit, I met up with a couple of friends at the bar. I'm usually a fan of Moscow mules, but the bartender suggested I try their Manila Mule, made with gin, and it did not disappoint! Staff on hand has always been kind and friendly any time I've gone. I love being able to sit around the fire, drink in hand, gabbing with friends. The seating inside the old airplane hangar is pretty awesome too. On one occasion I decided to have the loaded tater tots and they tasted great. If you're looking for a dog friendly place to hang with pals, it doesn't get much better than this!

Baylee B.

Yelp
My husband and I stayed here for the night and were blown away with how great it was! The room was so spacious, and had my dream bathtub. We went to the lobby bar for drinks and had amazing service from the bartender Liz. We will definitely be coming back for more trips!

Yelp
We were camping in the Redwoods and wanted some oysters - so happy we found this gem!! The Lobby offers grilled oyster kits that you can order take out for a reasonable price. The oysters were provided in buckets that were pretty useful for disposing of the shells. The bartender that helped with the order was awesome and kind enough to give us grilling tips and best way to eat them. Now the oysters themselves were absolutely delicious. It was our first time having grilled oysters vs raw, so we didn't expect how big and thick the oysters would be. The bbq sauce and butter garlic sauce complimented the oysters really well. Needless to say, my family will be coming by again during our annual camping trips to the Redwoods!

Yelp
We love this hidden gem! Found it on an impromptu coastal road trip! We love our beach cottage and the Lobby Bar and Good from the Jetty was so good! We got the smoked pacific salmon orzo bowl and my new favorite cider Humbolt Cider and the local Great White by Lost Coast! Everyone was super friendly and helpful making the trip so good! We will definitely be back!

Yelp
This is for anyone who is planning a big event or wedding.  The buildings and stay speak for themselves- they are beautiful. But this is about the management and business which impacted our wedding and stay. Leading up to our wedding we had a whole month in which they didn't get back to us after calling them and emailing them about details that were needed and pretty simple on their side for the wedding. This lack of communication on their part impacted us to the point that we didn't know if we even had a wedding venue. Nicole the manager was always rude and unfriendly; everyone who interacted with her including our guests found her extremely disrespectful, including the day of our wedding. The oyster house was lovely, but the space wasn't that clean and there were a couple hazards on the property like broken steps. There was also a mysterious car that would come on the property at odd hours and we had our bath salts stolen, which is pretty minor. But I am not sure if the codes are changed. The day before the wedding they sent out a form needing information for the wedding which should have been sent out months before the wedding. We also weren't given instructions on how to use the hanger, bathroom code, or code to access it to decorate our wedding. We paid to have the space for 48 hours, but couldn't use it the whole time since no one gave us the code. And once we got there, someone was cleaning the space- so it was not ready for us when our time started. We were charged an extra $175 for leaving our trash, which we left in a pile for them. But they expected us to take our trash and put it in the dumpster, which was pretty much cleaning up our own trash to be charged for it. We had to contact them to make payments to the point that we wondered if we needed to book another venue, and their communication was delayed for weeks or up to a month. Madi was hired during our wedding preparation as the events manager, and she was very friendly and able to get back to us. But everyone else seemed extremely unorganized. If you are just staying or eating for fun, I think this would be great. But for a big event or wedding- the organization is terrible.

Yelp
Boy oh boy. Just moved back to humboldt for the third iteration. Didn't even know about this location but will be back often. Open area with a great staff and bar, video games for the kids and drinks to satiate any customer. Can't wait to go back.

Yelp
We love coming to this spot so we decided to have our wedding here in the Hangar. It was the perfect decision! The venue fit our vision perfectly and working with the team at the Social Club was great. From the room/cabin reservations to coordinating the bar in the Hangar and inside the Lobby they where a joy to work with. Any questions that came up where answered right away. We'd like to give extra kudos to James for helping us fine tune our day and working directly with out wedding planner to make it a stress free and hugely fun event. Everyone who attended couldn't say enough positive things about the venue and the staff. Perfect day Perfect place Thank you so much! Craig & Chris Jensen

Yelp
When the Humboldt Bay Social Club opened several years ago I was so excited because it took a historic property in a cool location and turned it into something everyone could appreciate-- and something for locals to show off. It offered a cool place to hang out with friends and families, a place to bring out-of-towners, a place for kids to play while relaxing and enjoying the cool ambiance and a snack/drink. In the last couple years I've seen a major shift in the vibe. The staff have become impatient and unwelcoming. I have even heard them say how overworked they are to customers. More restrictions and policies have been put in place making it less welcoming and warm to locals-- the play camper that our kids adore has been made unavailable the last three times we've been there. The food and drink selection has dwindled. I'm not sure what's happening, but it's unnerving and a little heart-breaking. We used to frequent the Social Club-- even sporting the logo on t-shirts. Used to be excited to bring visitors and now I'm embarrassed by the customer service. I really hope someone sees this and takes it seriously. As the owners continue to invest in other properties in the area, please remember how you're showing up in our community. You are representing for our beautiful area and once upon a time you did a wonderful job. It would be really nice if you rediscovered your mission and took a hard look at your customer experience and how you're showing up for Humboldt .

Yelp
Catfished! Not a "Crown Jewel". More like a bucket of horse excrement. Run, don't walk, the other way. Anything else would be better.

Yelp
We stayed two nights in cabin #4 and we are very happy with the experience, we'd come back anytime. The staff was friendly and helpful, from helping with reservation adjustments before arrival to answering questions afterwards. The cabin is nicely decorated and cozy, and it's very quiet. It's just a few steps to the water on the bay side, and the cabin is surrounded by beautiful forest scenery. There's an outdoor fireplace, with firewood provided, and we loved that. We also liked the lobby bar and Jetty restaurant across the street, especially during covid-19 because it's all outdoors.

Yelp
Living in Humboldt all my life for 35 years, how did I not hear about this gem! O-M-GEE!!! I can not stop bragging about this cute place here in Humboldt! Who are you all and where did you all come from?! I'm so glad this place is here and I hope they're staying FOREVER! First off, can we just admire their beautiful decor they got going on! LOVE LOVE LOVE! We came here for my sisters birthday. A group of 4 and enjoyed everything! From the food, drinks, atmosphere, vibe.... I can go on and on but I'll stop and have you witness it yourself. Great for groups, birthdays, weddings... shoot, any occasion! Little humans (kids) and fur babies are all welcome, too! They have outdoor games to keep the kids and adults busy, do it yourself s'mores and much much more! Hard day at work or just want to be alone, head to Humboldt Bay Social Club and grab a drink, kick your feet up and relax by the outdoor fireplace while watching the sunset. Your bad day will be gone. What are you waiting for, quit reading my review and go check it out yourself! You will not be disappointed!

My wife booked us a suite for my 30th birthday as a surprise and paid a deposit. The booking was from the official website, and she received a confirmation email with all the details. We drove approx. 5 hours, and when we were 15 minutes away we called to get some check-in instructions. We were shocked to hear that our room was double-booked, and there is no availability at all. Panic ensued - we were told to wait and see what could be done to accommodate us. By now we were pretty much freaking out, how could this happen in the US? And in such an expensive establishment, while booking through their official website, receiving confirmation and *paying a big deposit*. In their defense, they did offer us some alternatives to choose from for our first night, and we accepted (we didn't have a choice). So the first night we had to leave and stayed somewhere else in downtown Eureka (The Carter Inn). It was a nice place, but not what she had wanted and planned for. The second night we were offered a choice of 2 suites, we chose one, and were told that for our inconvenience, we would only be charged the deposit (which we already paid upfront) and everything else will be covered. We were quite happy with that arrangement, as we understand we cannot expect to have a completely free stay, regardless of how bad of a screwup this is. Now, the suite itself (The Ranch House) is very nice, from the big living room, the nice patio, the comfortable bed and many other amenities. We have certainly enjoyed our stay in the most part. However, wifi was advertised to be in all suites, we had no signal throughout the Ranch House. For a luxury/expensive accommodation like this, we expect strong Wifi throughout the place, it's as much as a utility as electricity/water. We checked out early the next morning and headed back. We found out that we were charged an additional $95 (for cleaning and amenities fee) despite being told we will not be charged anything in addition to the deposit. This left an even worse taste in our mouths and prompted me to write this review to inform other travelers. We will not return.

Yelp
Amazing place all round. Nice facilities indoors and out. Great staff, great bar, and great oysters!

Yelp
DISCLAIMER: I sent an email to the staff of Humboldt Bay Social Club after my stay, 1 week ago. I did receive a voicemail from a staff member requesting a call back. However after returning the call and texting back, I never heard back again... As an individual whose family owns a small business, I do not like to write negative reviews. However, I do believe it is important to share our experience with the goal of preventing this for future potential hotel guests. My husband and I stayed at this hotel in Dec 2022, after we stayed here in 2020. We had fond memories of staying here, a cherished milestone of getting engaged at Oyster Beach, and have been looking forward to the chance to come back and stay again. Unfortunately, our stay this second time did not met the expectations we previously had. I'd like the take a moment to share with you our concerns and appreciate in advance your willingness to hear them: Upon arrival, we were impressed with Room #8 as it is larger than Room #6, where we stayed last time. Once settled, we realized the room was filthy. The shower curtain has multiple stains/mold at the bottom, window seals black and covered in dirt, the floor smudged (a few came off when we cleaned up the shower leak), and the pull out couch visibly dirty. We attempted to pull out the fold out couch however it was unable to be pulled out because it was pinned in by the top of the couch; the couch was not only very soiled but broken. Additionally, there were large amounts of dirt and grime under the cushions so our idea to relax on the pull out couch while enjoying a show was not a reality. The water leaked out of the shower making a giant pool of water on the ground. Our towel supply went to cleaning up the water and had no option (that we were aware of) to get clean towels. My sock fell under one of the pieces of furniture and came out covered in dust; I was very disgusted when I looked under the furniture to see a huge collection of dust and dirt. Last, the freezer in the mini fridge did not work and left our perishables spoiled. When we booked our room, we purchased 2 massages with the promotion offered online. We were appreciative of the deal and the chance to take advantage and treat ourselves. Upon arrival, we still hadn't heard anything about the massage. There was no information sent to us about how to book or what to do next; I figured we weren't able to book until we arrived or additional information would be included in the welcome email. That was not the case. I did some research and found Nicole's contact online. My husband and I were fortunate enough to run into her at the lobby bar. She was booking others beside us and was kind enough to help get us booked for the next day. Although, I had text her earlier that day and was disappointed to see her booking the people beside us in our preferred time slot when we booked nearly two months ahead. She had no information on our online order and/or payment, which I found concerning but was willing to provide; she was able to get us in the next day. The massages were nice, although at the end, when we got dressed our socks were covered in white debris; the ground there was also very dirty. Once again, I had to pull up the email to notify the massage therapist we already prepaid, as she was requesting full price payment. The lack of communication and clarity of the massage was poor and made for a confusing situation. Prior to this stay, we had fond memories. Between the very poorly kept room, lack of communication regarding the spa services, and apathy when I brought these concerns directly to the management, I am sad to say we no longer feel that way. When visiting Eureka next time, we will definitely take our business elsewhere.

Yelp
The first time I tried this place, I thought the food was pretty good and the ambience/outdoor space was great. I liked it so much I decided to have my sister's birthday dinner there. They used to have a deal where if you buy a bucket of oysters you can grill them yourself and use the grill for other stuff as well. Emphasis on *used to. I called the day before the party and left a detailed voicemail. No response. I tried a few more times the day of with no luck. We finally got and answer and told them we wanted to reserve oysters and were told that they had already sold out, but that we could still use the grill if we bought drinks. Great! No, not great. I showed up later on with birthday cake, decorations, some food to grill, and a wad of cash I intended to spend on booze and appetizers. They told me I could not bring outside food. I told them that I had called that very day and was told that I could! I asked if they would make an exception because it was their mistake. Nope. I started frantically calling party guests and driving towards the drag strip recreation area, praying there would be a grill/picnic table open. By the time we procured drinks, extra food and charcoal, it was getting dark. So we BBQed in the dark and needless to say my sister's birthday was ruined. I'm sure it's not a big deal to HBSC but it was a huge disappointment to my sister on her 30th birthday. It would've been easy for them to make an exception. It was, after all, a mistake on their part for telling us it was okay to bring outside food. I won't be back.

Yelp
Yassssssss queens!! Yassssss! Humble digs shared in positive community spirit that transform a beautiful Humboldt coastal area into a luxuriously calm oasis. Loving that this gorgeous boutique hotel has created conscious community gathering space for locals too. Simple drinks and snacks available. BYO what you want (except liquor and oysters). Chill vibes here. Great space to connect with people; those you bring and the new folks you'll meet. Kid friendly! Good dogs can be found for furry hellos in the outdoor spaces. Casual. Have hosted or participated in a few group activities here. The bar manager is very easy to work ahead with for planning.

Yelp
I'm giving five stars because really it is an awesome spot but I'm hoping this narrative helps the business make some adjustments. 1. We didn't know that it was a "keyless check in". I guess we were supposed to get an email with lots of helpful information..like the code to get in our room. We never got an email so the bartender had to help us out. 2. On Saturday the lobby was closed for a private event and the little side bar was completely under staffed and not equipped to handle the heavy flow of customers (staff were absolutely amazing though) 3. Is there staff there at night? About 5:30 am 2 cars parked outside the property and partied loudly for about an hour and a half. We woke to loud voices and screaming, considered calling cops but when we a realized it was just a party, we laid in bed trying to go back to sleep. Not at all the the businesses fault but it was a little creepy and made me wish there were staff on-site. All the staff were so helpful and friendly, the food was pretty good, and the room although cold, was clean and nicely decorated with lots of little extras included. We really want to rent one of the cabins on the Bay side of the property next time.

Yelp
If you are lucky enough to stumble into this place while exploring the north spit of Humboldt Bay, you will be rewarded with a great drink selection and a comfortable couch or chair to enjoy it in. Hopefully you brought a picnic lunch and are up for a game of cornhole. And if you have kiddos with you they will be overjoyed at the large flat paved area for bike and scooter play. You may like it so much you'll want to spend the night, and you will be stoked to know they offer cute clean cabins for rent! Beautifully and artfully decorated in secluded locations. This place is the BOMB! I hope they get a food truck or two to settle in out there. That would really top off the amazingness of this sweet local establishment.

Yelp
This is the first negative review I've ever written. My boyfriend and I were very excited to stay at this cute looking boutique hotel but ended up cancelling our reservation after experiencing an unfathomable series of poor customer service. First and foremost, an anonymous member of the reservation staff/management treated us incredibly rudely. This staff miscommunicated policies to us. Please understand that the miscommunicated policies were questioned by us, paraphrased by myself to seek clarification and expressed by two staff members to my boyfriend and me before we made our reservation. When attempting to seek resolution, multiple members of the reservation staff failed to return our calls, expressed that they 'respond within 72 HOURS' (remember, this is supposed to be a hospitality industry), refuse to tell you their names and finally followed up via email with incredibly snarky email about how concisely they communicate and how we are at fault for not understanding. The email (nickie@humbolt-social.com) is relatively anonymous, doesn't contain a standard salutation/signature block or the name of who is communicating and is written in an incredibly accusational and unprofessional tone. Rather than posting a negative review, I was hoping to share this experience with the owner of this hotel. When I asked to speak with the owner, I was again told that they won't share his name but will have him call me. Needless to say, I didn't hear from him. If you do choose to try your luck with staying here, I wish you a better experience than we had and hope you don't cross the path of the anonymous, "Nickie".

Yelp
Laid back, Humboldt kinda experience. Very casual inside and out. Picnic baskets are fun with cheese, smoked salmon, crackers and home made pickled vegetables...several combinations to choose from. Pretty cheap eats and drinks...the Manila Mule made with Jewell Gin from Blue Lake is refreshing and tasty. Lodging available for overnight partiers or events.

Yelp
It was just an awesome experience staying at the cottages. Beautiful setting and a feeling of peace and tranquility. Very impressed by the attention to detail that is thought about and put into your stay here. Customer service is second to none. Please come and check it out for an unforgettable experience. We will be back, you can count on that. You guys rock!

Yelp
Took my wife Joni on a date for a new experience and we found Humboldt Bay social club! Everything we love... Outdoor seating, good drinks, good food, and good friends! John and his wife Amy run a really nice establishment seated on the peninsula in beautiful and scenic Samoa. We look forward to returning really soon and staying at their property! Five stars in every way possible!

Yelp
We spent two nights at The Humboldt Bay Social Club in rooms 7 and 8 and had an incredible time. What they've created there is a funky, inventive, inspiring small coastal hotel on an airstrip which places you in the middle of a beautiful, unusual landscape in a part of the country with nearly infinite spots to explore. The rooms themselves---suites really---were incredibly spacious and well appointed. Although the hotel is no-frills in one sense, in another sense were so many thoughtful amenities. A full bar with oysters. An outdoor bathhouse on the bay amidst beautiful eucalyptus and cyprus trees. A ton of toys for kids. Wagons with beach chairs, coolers and blankets. Smores for the outdoor fire pits. A mini fridge filled with locally sourced treats. It seems that the unexpected happens there quite often---planes land from time to time, drag races happen from time to time. When we arrived, someone was having a party and there was an eight-piece horn ensemble playing eighties hits. In a world of cookie cutter, corporate hotels, The Humboldt Bay Social Club was an utterly refreshing and invigorating experience, inducing joy from its abundant natural beauty and human ingenuity. We recommend it heartily and hope to return again and again.

Yelp
Great discovery! Lovely bar, with excellent service. Terrific indoor & outdoor seating. Enjoyed buying gifts & snacks to go. Lovely oyster grilling baskets, s'mores baskets, and more fun offers to choose from. Definitely worth a visit, good for all travelers & family friendly!

Yelp
I want to start out and say that the events coordinator was not helpful at all. I tried multiple times to set up a back up plan and ask questions. No one ever responded. Now for today's event. The weather worked out wonderfully. When I arrived per the contract, I needed to check in. There was no place to check in except the bar. The bartender was great, a little miss communication but he was busy. Dacia & Ritz are truly where the experience was great. They answered all my question were very accommodating. Checked up on us and made sure we were happy. They were amazing. We love this place. Hoping to do more events here and hopefully we will have a better experience with the events coordinator next time.

Yelp
We came up for a nice getaway but unfortunately things didn't pan out. The rooms were fine albeit extremely overpriced for Humboldt County. The first night we wanted to grill some oysters but the ONLY person working (Gloria) was slow, rude, and didn't care. So after waiting about 30 minutes to order 2 beers, we decided against the oysters. Gloria was already in the weeds and I didn't want to wait another 30 minutes. So on our last night (Friday) we got there right at 4 and waited for 3 hours for the oyster delivery to come. The oysters never arrived, maybe they did but we left to get some other food. I don't understand how that happens, the business has been open for at least 3 years, and Friday/Saturday nights are always the busiest. After these interactions, it's clear to us the owners are absent and have never been in the hospitality industry. For the money, I recommend getting a nice Airbnb with a bbq and just going to the Co-op and buying oysters, you'd end up saving more money and chances are staying at a better place.

Yelp
Scammy cancellation policy during Covid-19. They are willing to let you book reservations and juggle the opening date of lodging in the county, but not willing to give a full refund within 7 days of your stay if the lodging remains open to only essential workers and locals. Capitalizing on people's risk of wanting to support their business, honestly disgusted.

Yelp
This is the BEST place for a staycation. I visited during COVID and felt so comfortable. They left me little snacks and every possible cooking utensil was available. I only stayed one night and my biggest regret is that I didn't stay longer. Super comfortable bungalow, so cute, I could live there if they'd let me.

Yelp
I'm posting this to warn others who may be seeking a relaxing, peaceful getaway so they can make a more informed choice. I grew up in Humboldt, have stayed in many boutique hotels as well as worked in many hospitality settings, I'm not without context. I did appreciate the comfortable bed and soaking tub (aside from the auditory experience of bathing in a bar bathroom), but that was it. The walls are extremely thin, and between ~6-10pm it will sound like the whole bar is in your room with you. I was even treated to a drunk patron from the bar wandering into the guest area and banging on my door looking for a "friend"! I knew that getting the room closest to the bar would come with some noise, but I was not prepared for the loudest noise to occur after the bar closed, when I was treated to the blasting of Eureka's finest playlist of Nickelback, Creed and pop country from 10pm-12am, audible through silicone earplugs. I would liken it to trying to fall asleep on a very comfortable bed located in the bathroom stall of Sidelines (iykyk). When I called the reservation line to ask them to tell their staff to turn the music down, I was told to call the bar myself. They of course did not pick up, as it was after hours. The next day, I called out of desperation to ask them to please talk with their staff about the noise. I received an apology and a 15% discount for one night. To be fair, it was much quieter the next night--too bad I was awakened by someone's dog whining and scratching the floor outside my room door at 6am! Suite 9 may have gotten a remodel, but HBSC would be better off putting the bunk beds back in and just being honest about the vibe, which is definitely gentrified trailer park party-hardy a la Butter in SF vs. the "spa-like atmosphere" in the room description. A few other bonuses: the reserved parking spot for my room was occupied every single time I tried to park in it, and the doorstep breakfast delivery advertised in the confirmation email is not actually operational. Lastly, if you're a COVID-safety-conscious traveler, please know that this place apparently exists in a magical land where COVID is not happening and Humboldt hasn't been surging with cases/deaths--there was minimal signage on masking requirements and guests and staff were regularly unmasked in indoor common areas. TLDR, if you seek relaxation and peace, Suite 9 is NOT it, don't be romanced by staged photos and generous descriptors. The other suites and cabins are probably better, but I wouldn't know.

Yelp
The vegan tots were AMAZING (and I'm not a vegetarian)

Yelp
While visiting my son here in Arcata I was exploring a number of different restaurants and my son adjusted that we go here because I happen to really like oysters. I can only get four stars because I did not actually eat any food that was prepared by the restaurant facility. The essential style of eating there is that; you buy a bag of oysters from the bar, they then give you condiments and essential extras that you need like garlic butter, BBQ sauce, charcoal etc.., you then go outside to an external grill, throw the charcoal in and grill your own oysters outside. That being said the oysters were large and fresh, the experience to be outside and with my son and grill oysters was fun. It's a nice experience to go do with family and friends and sit outside by a warm fire and eat fresh broiled oysters, recommended. PS Two men can probably eat around 2 bags of oysters which is 50 oysters. AND Jeanette the bartender was super friendly and helpful!

Alycia A.

Yelp
We've gone here twice so far and it's definitely a cool experience. The oysters to go are fresh and huge! The staff is extremely friendly and go above and beyond!

Yelp
Absolutely beautiful venue, incredible renovation and design details of the space. One could see the care and thought that has gone into this amazing environment. However, my sister in law booked the site for her husband's 40th on 12/22/19, and all was well until we arrived and were met by the bartender. She was as unwelcoming and unfriendly as could be to the party. We weren't complete jerks thrashing the place, just a typical crowd of well wishers and party goers as expected in a venue of this design. She was surly, bad mannered, and seemed to hate her job and the idea of customer service. Asking her for a drink seemed like we were putting her out. She obviously did not want to be there. I feel the management of this venue will suffer if it continues to keep servers of this caliber in employment.
