I can't believe it's been 5 years to the day since I'd stayed here - and my experience this time confirms what I experienced then. Note to fellow experienced city folks and world travelers: the Humboldt Redwoods Inn is a motel, not a fancy hotel, which means that for under $100, it's a great clean, safe, friendly deal. BUT, compare it to a $250-$350 hotel room in San Francisco, and you'll complain, as some do.
Think simple, clean, convenient motel and you'll be thrilled, as I was again, for several nights of sound sleep in 2015, as I was in 2010. Our room even had an expected vaulted ceiling to make it seem more spacious than a regular motel room.
For a place just 100 yards off Hwy 101, it's surprisingly, wonderfully, quiet. "Mark" still owns and operates the place, and is friendly, helpful, happy to converse with us guests and help out with information and recommendations. He clearly is the reason this is not just another motel, but run by someone who cares.
Take note, though: the town of Garberville is itself a weird, mixed bag of shops and services -- and Humboldt's own brand (or should I say blend?) of stoner homeless population. Like an upstate SF's Haight-Ashbury, walking past a dozen seemingly jobless young men & women living on the street will turn some people off. But the tradeoff is Garberville has super-friendly working townspeople, and offers the convenience of a supermarket, hardware store, gas station, and numerous low-key cafes and restaurants, and all in flat walking distance from the Inn (the main street's shops only run about 1/4-mile).
For our group's 3-night's stay, it was perfect, and we even made the reservations at the last minute (after the Labor Day weekend) and were thrilled to be accommodated.
