I was a little nervous to stay at the Hummingbird Guesthouse after my friend pointed out some negative reviews on Google.
My friend and I were travelling separately so she got to the guesthouse before me - I made sure she knew she wouldn’t be able to check in without me, so she’d planned on just going for a walk along the river and exploring the area (this was her first time in Port Alberni). She went to the door to ask the hostess if she could park at the guesthouse while she went for a walk along the river, but it seems the hostess was very frustrated and assumed I was going to need a late check in (or maybe she assumed my friend was trying to check-in?). This was a bit of an unusual experience - she’d expected to get a tidbit about maybe a nice place to walk or advice on one of the snack trucks that were parked a short walk away. Usually, when we travel, the people running the hotels or B&Bs like sharing things in the area that are fun or interesting to see - that was not the case here.
It seems like the guesthouse was a passion project of Cheryl and Wayne’s, and Cheryl is carrying the business on - I see lots of reviews mentioning how nice Wayne was, it seems like he may have passed away and the current host is adjusting. I kept that in mind during my interactions with Cheryl and didn’t have any further issues.
The room we stayed in was spacious and clean. There were little personal touches like a paddle use as a coat hanger which was clearly a gift to Cheryl and Wayne - little personal touches like this are charming and show Cheryl and Wayne must have had lots of love running this business. The location is on a busier road, so it can get loud - my friend slept with earplugs so it wasn’t an issue. The blinds in the room don’t all open, so the room was a bit dark.
Overall, it’s a nice property even if the decor is a bit dated. It’s clean. The location is about a thirty minute walk from downtown. My friend’s initial interaction with the hostess made us feel like we were walking on eggshells, which made the stay a bit uncomfortable.
One funny thing to note - the room has a VCR! Don’t forget your travel VHS’s if you stay at the guesthouse 😆
