Summer Activities in Aspen

"If you hike Smuggler Mountain, you’ll likely see mountain bikes en route, as well. You can bike Smuggler, as well as the nearby Hunter Valley Trail, among the most popular mountain bike trails in the Aspen area. This ride through the Hunter-Fryingpan Wilderness is seven miles and relatively challenging but not overly technical. Keep the ride going by connecting to the Smuggler trail system." - MATADOR_NETWORK

Great place to start a beautiful hike on Hunter Creek. Plenty of parking one minute from the trailhead.

My Wife and I are a older couple along with our. Dog . We parked in the senior parking lot up on top. Much easier to do a two mile walk from there. Space is limited so arrived early to find a place to park. Get your senior parking permit at the visitors center at the bottom on the right side of the road after passing over the roaring fork river.

Hunter Creek Trailhead in Aspen, CO, is a truly enchanting destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Nestled in the heart of the Rockies, this trailhead serves as the gateway to some of the most breathtaking hiking experiences in the area. The trail itself offers a perfect blend of scenic beauty and moderate challenge, making it accessible for both beginners and seasoned hikers. The well-marked path winds through lush forests, with stunning views of the surrounding mountains and vibrant wildflower meadows, especially in late spring and early summer. Wildlife sightings are common, so keep your eyes peeled for deer, birds, and even the occasional fox. The sound of the nearby creek adds to the serene atmosphere, making it a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Facilities at the trailhead include parking and informational signs, which are helpful for first-time visitors. However, it's advisable to arrive early, especially during peak tourist seasons, as parking can fill up quickly. Overall, Hunter Creek Trailhead is a must-visit for anyone looking to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of Aspen. Whether you’re seeking a leisurely hike or an invigorating adventure, this trailhead offers something for everyone. Don’t forget your camera—every turn offers a postcard-worthy view!

Great hike with kids. Mine are 4 & 6 y.o. and it was good for us. Without an all trails map it's hard to say where it goes as there are few forks that were not identified, we just explored until we were ready to head back. We saw a deer, lots of flowers, waterfalls, and a beautiful water flow of the creek.

One of my favorites. Great for hiking, very difficult for mountain biking. Beware of the bears, do not provoke them and if you are bringing a dog, make sure it's always on the leash.

A very fun trial with rocks and uneven surfaces, which we love. We started from Hunter Creek trail then connected to Smuggler Mountain road to finish the hike. The hike took 3 hours. This route was perfect because it’s fun and more challenging to start but finished very smoothly and easily. Spectacular scenery of the Aspen valley at the Observation Deck.

Yelp
This is the perfect beginner trail to go on if you want to feel like you are hiking but without a steep elevation. To get to the trail, take the Hunter Creek bus from Rubey Park to the stop called "Hunter Creek." The trailhead is almost directly across from the bus stop. The trail opens with many bridges and natural water features, and it is maintained very well. There are no really steep parts, just moderate inclines and declines. You don't need to worry about getting lost on this one! There are some mild rocks that make you feel like you are doing more than you really are. This trail is exceptionally picturesque. As I was sick and a thunderstorm hit while we were hiking this trail, we only went about halfway around the loop. However, this would be a fun and easy one to do with a few hours.

Yelp
Pretty hike right in the heart of Aspen! Pretty bridges. Different options depending on the length and difficulty of the hike desired. Pretty steep (for my sea level lungs), but a good hike - good exercise, quite pretty, and nice views of Aspen!

Yelp
So beautiful here this time if year! Flowers, green green grasses, heavily flowing waters! Love it!

Yelp
If you start at the trailhead in town, the trail is completely flooded and partially iced-over just about 5 minutes in. You'll have to turn around and head back. Might as well just walk up smuggler.
