17 Best Beaches in Los Angeles | Condé Nast Traveler

"Set amid a 121-acre park that was established in 1942 and spans the tippity-top of Orange County, the Huntington City Beach is the most iconic beach on this stretch. It's known for its surf breaks, International Surfing Museum, and vibrant day and nightlife. There are tons of surf shops if you want to rent a board or buy a towel, plus heaps of restaurants, bars, local breweries, and a really cute pier. And though it's not on the beach you'd remiss if you didn't get a fish taco at Normita's Surf City Taco, a local favorite." - Maxwell Williams, Krista Simmons

Google
Such a classic and simple beach. Love this one. Great sunsets, lots of beach space, beautiful surf, and tons of solid shops and restaurants nearby. If you visit, plan for a parking fee, and you may need to hunt for a spot. Better availability in the evening if you just want to go watch the sunset.

Google
One of the nicest beach in west coast, Huntington beach has a very long coastline with very clean and sound environment. Happy to be here on our short stay in the city. The parking lot is huge, the beach is clean, the people are nice. The sunset is amazingly beautiful, thanks to the clear California sky. Love the city, the food, the beach, and the stay.

Google
In my opinion this is the best mainstream beach in SoCal. US Open of Surfing 2025 saw some smaller waves, but the boardwalk, Casamigos Bar and general atmosphere is one of a kind. Sand is excellent and tons of room to relax.

Mark Pitts

Google
A really amazing and beautiful beach that is easy to access and seems to never be crowded, even on the busiest days. The only challenge is finding parking! It can be difficult at times. All parking lots along the beach are paid parking, so be ready for that. There is a huge section of the beach north of the pier that is dog friendly, so you will see lots of dogs there. The water is easy to access from the sandy beach, but is VERY cold! We saw very few people swimming, but several surfers and kite surfers. There are restrooms available at the parking areas, and nice paved paths along the cliffs for walking or biking.

Google
What can I say? The sunsets are beautiful, the people are chill and the atmosphere is laidback. There is always something going on. I love visiting HDB when I come to California.

Google
California has the best beaches. Often HB has surf competitions and even others like cross fit. Plenty of farmers markets also. Good vibes, beautiful weather, plenty of space for volleyball and other sports

Google
Came for 4th of July! Nice environment and very beautiful community. Although if you’re coming for 4th of July come early or be ready to spend a while trying to find parking nearby or even a little further out! Would recommend!

Google
Great time at the Huntington Beach surfing competition, tons of vendors and overall great people all around.

Yelp
Huntington Beach is an absolute treasure along the California coastline! Whether you're a local or a visitor, there's always something exciting to do. The beach itself is gorgeous, with expansive sandy shores perfect for lounging, playing volleyball, or taking a relaxing walk. The waves are fantastic for surfing, and there are numerous surf shops if you need to rent gear or take a lesson. One of my favorite places is the Huntington Beach Pier. The views from the pier are breathtaking, especially at sunset. There are also great restaurants and shops nearby. I highly recommend dining at Duke's Huntington Beach and Sandy Beach Shack right below for a classic beachside experience. Parking can be challenging, especially on weekends, so it's best to arrive early. There are various parking lots and street parking options, but they fill up fast. The atmosphere is always lively, with friendly people and plenty of activities. Whether you're looking for a casual beach day, a surfing adventure, or just to enjoy the beautiful scenery, Huntington Beach is the place to be!

Yelp
I know a lot of people love them some Huntington Beach, but in my opinion, it's just alright. The area itself is beautiful but a lot of the people here aren't friendly and act so bougie. It's definitely not my favorite area. I'm not into places with people who act like their sh!t don't stink.

Yelp
This beach was very busy on a summer weekday afternoon, but everyone was spaced out, so it didn't feel uncomfortably crowded. The sand was pretty clean, so the kids had lots of fun making and structures and just burying themselves. There were very alert lifeguards that were continually reminding swimmers to come back closer to shore as the waves got rougher. The restrooms are a long walk back to the parking lot and then some. Where we were parked, we had to pass the snack shack, too. Fortunately, there was additional washing area near the parking lot, so we didn't have to walk even further to wash off the sand. Parking can be paid for by the hour.

Yelp
Such a Fun and Clean Location. Area is Not too loud or crowded. Always catch a Good Wave and Plenty of Street Parking

Yelp
My hometown. Yes it's changed to high rises and isn't the Huntington Beach sleepy surf town I grew up in but I still wouldn't wanna move from here. Some people might disagree with my review but that's what opinions are for. The beaches are clean and plenty of parking at the beach or in the adjacent parking structures. Beautiful sunrises and sunsets as well!
google avatar

Yelp
Huntington Beach is absolute perfection! The sand is soft, the waves are epic, and the sunsets are breathtaking. I've spent countless days soaking up the sun, playing volleyball, and strolling along the pier. The vibe is always lively and fun, with plenty of great restaurants and shops nearby. Whether you're a local or just visiting, HB is a must-see destination for beach lovers!

Yelp
Huntington Beach can be a little crowded at times, but I love coming here when I am Orange County. I love the beach culture and the vibes here. I don't surf, but I like to ride my longboard on the boardwalk and float on my boogie board. Huntington Breach is a 10 mile long stretch of sandy beaches and is nicknamed "Surf City". Newport Beach is just south of this area. One of the world's largest surf competition called The US Open of Surfing takes place here in the summer. The waves can be a little stronge at times, but I love it. I love the workout fighting the waves and have caught some good ones on my boogie board. I like to walk on the pier and watch all of the other surfers on their boards and the sunset. Downtown Huntington Beach is pretty cool. There are lots of places to shop and eat at. I will usually pick up a few items at a surf shop and then grab some Wahoo's after a long day at the beach. They have an Artisan Fair on Fridays and occasional weekends where you can pick up some local artwork. Parking isn't too bad on the weekdays if you get here early enough. Weekends can be more challenging. Huntington Beach is home to the Huntington Beach International Surfing Museum. There is lots of memorabilia here if you enjoy surf history.

Yelp
I drove the 1-A not knowing exactly where I was heading but looking for a view and a beach. I stumbled upon Huntington simply by driving by it. I noticed it was a long public beach area, no cost to enter and had a pier and it ended up being my favorite beach I visited the week I was the area. This beach has a long public area and pier in the middle. Volleyball nets, public restrooms, showers, steps with a view and a small area with a gift shop and restaurant. The sand here was beautiful and clean. The walking areas were well taken care of wide enough for people to walk both ways. The pier was nice to walk down and see out further. I enjoyed sitting on the pier and watching the surfers catch waves and just watching the ocean view. It was chilly here with the wind - not many people in the water and those that were had wet suits on - bring long sleeves. There is a true oceanside/beachside restaurant here right under the start of the pier. It looked good and had a nice crowd when I was by there. I would love to try it but had already eaten upon arriving here. There is street parking with a meter or a couple of lots near the pier where you pay on your phone. Both had open spaces and were affordable to park close. If you are anywhere close to here and looking for a beach, I recommend this one.

Yelp
This beach has the most fire pits of any other OC beach. It's also the longest stretch beach with lots of fee parking, and restaurants right at the sand. No dogs allowed at the main beach though, but at Goldenwest and PCH there is the official HB dog beach, and it is a very nice sized one too. Huntington really has everything.
google avatar

Lindy K.

Yelp
If you want night out to explore some gentle pyromania, HB has plenty of fire pits accessible. Parking is $15 on the lot, $3.5/hr on the street. Bring a jacket.

Yelp
Huntington beach is one of the beaches that everyone has been to and loves. There's food, stores, bars, the gorgeous beach, music people riding bikes which I used to do since I was a teenager. This beach brings back a lot of memories. I love it, the pier is beautiful walking or taking a ride on your bike or skateboard down the path or whatever you like to ride. We came here today to celebrate the 4th of July with family friends. We saw my best friend's husband play in the band called Gringos they were awesome and two other bands. It was so much fun, and then about a mile past where we watched them play we went over to one of the houses not to far away and had BBQ with new friends from the band and the kids got to play, fireworks were going off everywhere and everyone in the neighborhood was setting them off lol it was like a war zone and such a blast. But just coming to Huntington is a different kind of atmosphere, I love it and I know so many of you do too. Let's keep this beach clean and beautiful! Always an incredible time, have a beautiful day :) Aloha

Yelp
Pacific coast high way / 9th st. Between tower 8 &10 has restrooms , kids playground, bike parking and accessible ramp to the beach . Streets parking available, coins or Cc accepted . From here it's not too far a drive to the pier . The pier has more public parking lot, it does fill up fairly quickly. See pictures for details of the beach layout

Yelp
First time at this beach. Parking gets full quick. We did find a parking garage pretty close. There were vendors selling different types of food and bracelets on the beach. They took cash and Venmo. The beach was beautiful. Our group had a good time.

Yelp
Everything was perfect that day. Just enjoying the weather and the beach. The water felt so refreshing.

Yelp
This is my childhood/teen go to beach. Since moving away I have to admit we haven't been back in decades until this week. I definitely take into account its Summer break and also a weekend, but holy hell that was insane. We opted for a hotel right on the beach to not worry about parking and thank goodness we did. Good luck finding any unless you get there very early. The closer to the pier you get the more busy it is. Keep in mind this is one of the surging capitals in California. While there's a great mall with many food options it's basically valet or find yourself wandering for street parking or a garage. Prices are steep at the beach, but you know this if visiting. Quite a few drunk people wandering the bars at night and police presence heavy. I was really bummed to see the beach closes at 10 so if you want bonfires get there first thing or there won't be any and you won't get to enjoy them late. Beach was clean, but so overpacked everyone was practically on top of each other. For me my vibe is more laid back and less people. I'll stick to San Diego, Seal or Laguna.

Yelp
Family fun in the sun! Kid approved! Awesome weather and cool people. HB will always be a great place to enjoy. Living in HB is even better

Yelp
My favorite place to be!!! Spacious relaxing and easy to get in and out! Dairy Queen across the street! Need packed for us!
google avatar

Yelp
I love it here in Huntington. This beach is so nostalgic for me but man the walk from the parking lot to the beach is killer now that I'm older. That said it's still worth the walk. HB is a home beach for me and walking Main Street is always fun.

Yelp
One of my most favorite beaches in the world, Huntington Beach California baby. Me and my lovely lady were here yesterday for 6 hours at the U.S Open Of Surfing going on for the next 2 weeks. I did some swimming and rented a board. Huntington have some of the biggest waves here. They also have some of the best trained lifeguards here too. They have the best training camp of lifeguards. Nightlife Is fun here out of all of the OC. Lots of great restaurants and bars. This beach and city has so much to offer.
google avatar

Daisy R.

Yelp
Okay but who made it to Adrian's kickback ???? Anybody actually show up to the tik tok frenzy ? It was crazy ! As I was driving buy I saw many stores you could walk to - love the organization at night when vehicles have to leave
google avatar

Kristy W.

Yelp
This is one of our favorite beach spots when we come to Southern California. We love walking through the shops, eating the food, stopping at the beach bars, playing in the ocean, and just having a great time people watching, and also watching some of the best sun sets on the pier.
google avatar

Amber M.

Yelp
We came to the beach for fun in the sun The area of the beach we met at was near Main Street. Nice beach! We saw volleyball going on and there is a paved bike trail where you can ride your bike, skate or walk. The beach has paid parking and street parking. I parked in a "Public Parking" structure. Get ready for crowds! There are a lot restaurants in walking distance of the beach, bike rentals, street performers, and Farmers Market. We came on a Tuesday so I don't know if the Farmers Market is there every day. We also saw a band playing. Main Street itself was closed for the festivities. If you don't have anything to do. Have a beach day in Huntington Beach.
google avatar

Yelp
Honestly best beach we've been to here. It was very clean, easy parking, bathrooms, and a children's playground. It was so much fun and so very convenient.
google avatar

Yelp
Summer is almost here time to start shedding those extra pounds ( allot of shedding to do ) lol This location is so beautiful to walk , run , bike ride or swim. Melting pot of people . Only giving it 4 stars only because it's a little more dirty then some of the beaches I've been too . But it's easily overlooked by the great views!
google avatar

Yelp
Location & parking: I generally park on the street or near the neighborhoods, free and have never had an issue. The walk over to the beach is less that 5 mins. Vibes: Depends on the day you go and the time, the crowd can vary significantly but these last two times I've gone during the summer evenings It's been great vibes. Experience: Going with a group of friends and hanging near the fire pits has been a highlight of the summer season so far. Staking out a pit can be a bit of a waiting game but if you go at the right time, early evening during the week it's no issue. Even on a holiday weekend, you can wait on a group to leave and you'll be fine. The pits are spaced out enough for a group to do their own thing and have their music playing. Beach closes at 10pm and the security is pretty on it. No complaints though. I'm not too sure about the pier, promenade, or other parts of the beach since I mostly stayed near the pits but I recommend it to anyone.

Yelp
always beautiful beach and shops gotta jyst love the pier! plenty of parking always have lifeguards around

Mr.BuffetSoCal ..

Yelp
Ah, Huntington Beach, once the jewel of the SoCal coastline, now edging dangerously close to becoming "Santa Ana-by-the-Sea." My olfactory senses got a workout from the beach restrooms, which seem to double as a neglected potpourri of eau de urine and feces. Seriously, guys, would a little Windex kill ya? The path to the beach is less a path and more a test of your strength and determination. Asphalt? Don't make me laugh. Be prepared for a "Survivor" episode as you lug your cooler, umbrella, and dignity across the sandy Sahara they call a beach. And let's not forget the local characters. Ah yes, there's a peculiar breed of motorists here waving American flags out their windows, stuck in some kind of political time warp. It's like "Back to the Future," only Marty McFly is nowhere to be found to fix the DeLorean. Come for the ocean, stay for the circus!
google avatar

Yelp
Decided to take my parents to the ocean, since they've never been to the west coast. it was oddly PACKED and many parking lots were full. we finally spotted street parking and were able to take it just in time. 2 hours was about $7, not too bad. we were super confused as to why it was so busy and before we knew it we were in the middle of an air show! the pacific air show?? I had no idea it was going on so it was a huge surprise and success for an outing! now we understood why it was so packed. even with how packed it was, we enjoyed ourselves. they had emergency vehicle "roads" marked out on the sand with caution tape, which made us feel extremely safe. pretty organized event. which there would have been more table and chairs around for my parents, we ended up having to leave before the air show ended because they were hungry but they didn't want to stand up and eat at the food trucks or the little food stands that were around. this is actually the second time I have randomly gone to huntington beach to find myself in the middle of the pacific air show. it was super cool and hope to one day be able to experience the entire thing, beginning to end! As for the beaches and streets, they were pretty clean. enough police around to feel safe but not entirely overwhelmed. wish I could have taken my mom to feel the ice cold pacific water but too many people around and the way the waves had been hitting the sand, it was like a huge DIP before getting to any water.

Yelp
Awesome local southern California beach. Clean. Lots of activities, shops and restaurants. You can see surfers & paragliding often.
google avatar

Yelp
The fajitas are amazing! We go there often and always a great experience. Brian the server is always on point! Maris the bartender is above and beyond. I'm so glad they opened one in my area. Never disappointed and the ambiance is so fun and classy. Thanks for being awesome!!!

Yelp
Alan's Clean-Up & Hauling is a great company to use to both move your belongings and to haul off junk! Alan is super nice, very reasonably priced, reliable, quick and very careful. His assistant Ryan is a hard worker and very nice, too! I'm from Texas and had to make the arrangements long distance. I called 5 different Moving/hauling companies and I'm so happy I chose Alan! 310-625-4285 Give him a call!!

Yelp
Just discovered Huntington Beach. I'm now a believer and will be back. It's everything I want in a beach. $15 bucks to park all day, restrooms, snacks and tons of parking plus beach goes on for miles so plenty of places to sit, read and daydream while watching the waves, never feels crowded and sand is soft.
google avatar

Rosario S. C.

Yelp
Huntington Beach and Pier is so beautiful to walk , run , surf or swim. It is great place to people watch, especially the surfers. There are several places to grab a bite and walk the pier.
google avatar

Judy L.

Yelp
Love this place. Parking $20 fee one time entry. Go get everything you need before you get there. I bought everything in my cooler and bags. Just chilled for hours and hours. Reapply sun block and hydrated. I enjoyed the breeze, our spot, and the other fellow beach goers.
google avatar

Angie W.

Yelp
My favorite beach for bonfires! The pits are next to the parking lot so you don't have to lug all your stuff to the edge of the water. While it'd be nice to be by the water, this makes for an easy clean up and pack up situation. Embarrassing to say but I can't swim, the the waves here are rather intimidating. Parking lot day use parking is $20 as of July 2022. there is also metered parking. And if you're patient and don't mind a walk, you can also park in the neighborhoods nearby. Main Street and the pier are right there if you want to grab a bite before, during, or after your beach visit. West coast sunsets are pretty great. Beach closes at 10pm.

Joshua G.

Yelp
The waves were fun and but the water was dirty and we had a good time in the shade! It's so good

Justin H.

Yelp
Huntington beach will not let you in. I have waited 3 hours to park. They kept the parking lot closed although many spots were available. bad waves too. go to seal.
google avatar

Maruko X.

Yelp
The city beach has this stretch of sand sits along the PCH between Goldenwest St. and Beach Blvd, where professional surfers surf while you catch some sun exposure. There are volleyball courts, bonfire pits, and the iconic spanning pier, where visitors and locals like to experience the soft ocean breeze and the sounds of crashing waves. The sunset view is breathtaking and indescribable in words.
google avatar

Jennifer L.

Yelp
It is easy to park. Three hours cost us about five dollars. There is a shower to rinse off after a dip in the Pacific. It is also fun to walk the pier. The bathrooms are disgusting. I recommend only using them as an emergency. We had a great day!
google avatar

Guy H.

Yelp
Everywhere you go in the United States there are beaches That reflect that part of the country. I've been fortunate to sample most of them over time. All have pros and cons but everyone has their favorite. Mine happens to be on the Texas coast because that's the one that gives me a sense of place with family during the summers growing up. Not the most esthetically pleasing to some but, still the ocean! I had never experienced these beautiful wide SoCal beaches until I saw Huntington on my first trip here as an adult! I couldn't believe I've missed out on these big wide expansive beauties. Hopefully, I get a chance to go back before the final curtain!

Yelp
I'm not sure why there are 3 different Huntington Beach (HB) on Yelp. But here we go again. HB is a fabulous beach. I don't visit it very often because I don't live close by it. When I am here, it's always a pleasant visit. It's a pretty clean beach. Lots of people walking around, riding bikes, just chilling. They say "Life's a beach". I need to get out to the beach more often than not... I love the fresh crisp air, the open breeze, smooth winds... makes me want to go to the beach right now LOL. Well, I'll plan for a weekend at the garden + HB before this summer ends. Thanks for the inspiration! See you there! Happy HB'ing!

Yelp
Huntington Beach is a beachgoer's paradise. With beautiful white sand and a seemingly endless stretch of beach, it is the perfect place for a full day experience. The day started by relaxing on the beach, surrounded by miles of picturesque blue Pacific Ocean waters. The sun shone brightly, and the waves provided a calming musical accompaniment. The beach was the perfect place to indulge in activities such as sunbathing, swimming, surfing, and volleyball. As the day progressed, the beachgoers indulged in a variety of activities such as beachcombing, kite flying, and enjoying the beach's local wildlife. In the afternoon, the beach was host to a number of events, including a beach bonfire, fireworks show, and a beach barbeque. Beachgoers were also able to enjoy music and entertainment provided by local vendors. The evening was filled with laughter and camaraderie, and it was the perfect way to end a perfect day. After a full day of activities and entertainment, many of the beachgoers enjoyed a delicious dinner at one of the many restaurants located along the pier. The quality of the food was second to none, and it was the perfect way to cap off a full day experience at Huntington Beach. In conclusion, a full day experience at Huntington Beach is one that will not be soon forgotten. With its beautiful white sand and miles of pristine ocean waters, Huntington Beach offered the perfect setting for a perfect day. Whether spending time relaxing on the beach, indulging in various beach activities, attending an event, or dining along the pier, Huntington Beach guaranteed an unforgettable full day experience.

Yelp
I was on the Huntington Beach pier and I have never seen it so deserted, Tuesday is the farmers market n street fair, Main Street was like ghost town, black bull, my favorite restaurant w its phenomenal ayce Sunday brunch closed last year and Gallagher, an Irish pub went out of business last week. Life and livelihoods were destroyed by all this Fear mongering. This new variant omicron was discovered by the chair of the SouthAfrican Medical Association, Dr AngeliqueCoetzee. Here's how she describes the threat: Looking at the mildness of the symptoms that we are seeing, currently, there's no reason for panicking as we don't see severely ill patients. Its gunna be good....for business ! "Product sales from its coronavirus vaccine accounted for $4.81 billion of Moderna's $4.97 billion in revenue in the third quarter." you should not extrapolate how this variant will effect the entire population based on the opinion of the CEO for the company that stands to make billions more on booster shots for this variant. I would actually listen to Dr Coetzee that has been treating patients over the CEO who has a vested interest in extending profits for stockholders. Viruses sometimes mutate to a less virulent strain. Stop with the gloom and doom. All these articles are causing unnecessary mental illness of fear, anxiety, paranoia. So the company with over 90 percent of its revenue from covidvaccines says we need another vaccine variant to combat the new strain? It's heartbreaking to see all empty stores in my beloved hometown, these stores will never come back until Brandon is gone, I miss the vibrant city that is called Surf City. The excitement that temporarily came to HB from the skating rink unfortunately would only last till the new year I was told, the virus became endemic n people just need to learn to live with it, I have been to 2 cruises n had a blast as everything is 50% off, I'm still here! Folks please live your life and help bring HB back to its former glory.

Yelp
One of the best beaches to relax and splash in the waves. Parking is easy and costs $15 / day. Close proximity to the restrooms and fire pits. Not as crowded the farther away you are from the pier with enough spacing between people.
google avatar

Brandye K.

Yelp
There is no way to escape the crowds during the peak parts of the year and yes you have to pay for parking, but tis typical of any popular California beach. This is a great location to watch surfers, kids running in the ocean and kite flyers while listening to buskers. My husband purposed to me on this beach 4/28/2016. The first hotel we stayed at together was The Hyatt on HuntingtonBeach. In general really great memories here

Yelp
If your not from California this is one of the city's you need to visit. From the beach to the shopping this is California. Your find great places to eat on Main Street and a few fun bars The pier is a good place to check out the city and the surfer's You'll need to pay for parking and there are a few parking structures so parking is easy to find most times.

Yelp
Huntington Beach located in Orange County, California is a phenomenal beach to go to and soak up that beautiful California sun and lovely cool breezes! Right adjacent to the beach also lays Seal Beach and from the horizon you can see Long Beach in the distance. The parking can be a bit hectic and crowded but if you patiently wait you will find a spot. Where we parked at it was a small fee and you just pay by card and put the receipt on your dashboard. The beach is full of skateboarders, runners and walkers enjoying nature on the sidewalk along the beach. The water is very clear and blue and you cant beat the waves here if you enjoy surfing. The sand is white and luscious and it feels great to walk barefooted in the sand with the sun shining down on it. They have restrooms provided as well as wash stations to get all the sand off your body. While we were here we noticed a lot of oil rigs and cargo ships deep back into the ocean water. Down farther before the pier is the dog beach where this is Heaven for all dogs! The dogs run free and enjoy swimming and playing catch or Frisbee. If your a dog lover and you want your furry friend to enjoy a nice day I recommend you to take them to the dog beach. Overall outstanding beach where your family and friends will have an amazing day out in the sun. Just make sure you bring some sunblock and water and try and get there early to avoid all the waiting for parking. Surfs Up!

Yelp
The vibes at Huntington Beach are immaculate which is why it's one of my favorite beaches in OC. With metered parking spaces in a lot or street parking, I've rarely ever had an issue in finding a spot. My friends & I love this beach because no matter what you feel like doing: surfing, biking/skating on the path, eating/drinking at the restaurants or bars across the street, shopping at Pacific City, entertainment with live music, or just taking a long walk by the water or pier - there is ALWAYS something for everybody to do. Not to mention, having a bonfire at sunset to end a great day will always be top 3 best things.
