Hutong Restaurant, Shangri-La Ulaanbaatar

Hutong was a great dining experience overall — the atmosphere was stylish, the service attentive, and most of the dishes were well-executed. However, I was genuinely shocked by how disappointing their steamed dumplings were. In a Chinese restaurant, dumplings are one of the most fundamental dishes, and unfortunately, these were dry, stale, and lacking in flavor. We both agreed they were probably the worst dumplings we’ve ever had — even store-bought frozen ones would have been better. That said, the rest of the meal was solid enough to still warrant a 4-star rating, but I really hope they revisit their dumpling recipe.

Somewhat disappointed from the food of Hutong in UB. It wasn’t bad, but also wasn’t the best. The worst dish were the dumplings with prawns and onion, the dough was really not good and the filling was mostly egg? Portions are very generous and two dishes are more than enough for two people. Service was ok, we didn’t wait too long for the food, about 30-40 min. But the waters don’t speak a good English. The interiors are nice and the vibe is relaxed.

I have now eaten at Hutong in Ulaanbaatar about 6 times with in a 5 month spand. This is because I been in the Shang Ri La this whole time. Atmosphere- nothing so amazing, they do have an outside area where you can walk around and see the city. It’s clean, it has class. Food- I have traveled all over Asia and been all over America. The food is decent, portions are adequate. I would not say its authentic Chinese food, but it does taste decent and you can watch your duck be cooked and cut in front of you. Service- Out of the 6 times I been there. I had 4 different problems. It’s not a language problem either. I do confirm with the waitress or waiter my order. They have either forgotten an order or delivered it late. But I will say their Manager is very apologetic and will deliver “Late” orders himself. He shows a lot of compassion and care for the customer.

TLDR: not coming back I’m extremely disappointed with the food. This restaurant used to be good, especially the duck, but this time it was completely inedible. We were specifically asked during the reservation if we wanted to order the duck, yet it took two hours for it to be served. Why bother asking if they start making it when we arrive lol The shrimp dumplings were also very bad. The dough was thick and heavy, more like buuz, whereas it should be light and delicate. And honestly, where was the shrimp? Where did the shrimp goo? Overall, a very disappointing experience compared to what this place used to offer.

My family went during Lunar New Year for 4 a table and ordered Whole Duck set . Enjoyed with stunning Atmosphere and Manager’s services He is absolutely helpful what we needed . But the Beijing Duck was not really good enough unfortunately However The other menus pretty good . Too greasy . Not Crispy at all we have never had like this Roasted Duck .

The food is superb. The service is so so. The space is really nice. All the other tables ordered the whole duck, which looked amazing! But we were only two people so we didn’t want so much food.

This review is for a dinner we had last September, but the experience was so memorably poor that it has stuck with me. For a restaurant located within a prestigious five-star hotel, we were anticipating a phenomenal meal. What we received was anything but. The main issue was the food itself. We ordered 3 different main courses and an appetizer, which were shockingly bland. The promise of dynamic, high-end Chinese cuisine fell completely flat, with each dish lacking the vibrant flavors and thoughtful execution one would expect at this price point. However, the most bewildering moment of the night came when we ordered a bottle of Spanish red wine. It was brought to our table warm!! When we politely pointed this out to the manager, we were informed, without a hint of apology, that the restaurant does not have a wine cooler! Let me repeat that: a restaurant in a five-star hotel does not have the basic equipment to serve wine at its proper temperature. This is a fundamental failure in hospitality and something I have never encountered at an establishment of this supposed caliber. Needless to say, we are not going back!

Hutong specializes in Northern Chinese cuisine—think expertly prepared Beijing duck, Mapo tofu, Kung Pao Chicken, hot pot dishes, and dim sum. Came here especially for Cantonese Delighs menu. Everything tasted super good, portions were fine. The prices were upscale for signature dishes. The service leaves much to be desired. Lack of stuff made us wait for a long time, the waitress was just skipping us.
