On the Grid : Hutton & Smith

Got a flight and they had a variety of different beers to try! Have a back game room and love the logo with the drinking beer kitty cat! Very good beers. We liked all of them we tried. Bartender was friendly and helpful.

Google
Probably the best overall beers that we had in the seven microbreweries that we visited in Chattanooga. The seating area is small and the staff member who served us was very friendly. One of the workers who sat at the bar never acknowledged our presence. Being a business owner myself, it never hurts to greet people and say hello. Their stouts were flavorful and we tried their Lemon Ginger wheat ale and it was very good.

Google
Hutton & Smith Brewing Co. provided the best overall experience of all the craft breweries we visited in Chattanooga Tennessee. Knowledgeable and friendly staff that proudly showcased the brewery's crafted beers. People wise, this was a good crowd. Casual, relaxing atmosphere. When we return to Chattanooga in the future, this will be a our good to brewery. They know what they are doing. They brew good beer. The Tectonic Session IPA was my favorite beer.

Google
Great area, lots of seating. Tasty flavors chose a nitro stout that was full of flavor, as well as a blackberry sour. One of the best sours I have had. The space is unique and Proof will deliver food to you there. QR codes on the tables to scan for a menu. I wish I had tasted more beers.

Cool spot we found while on a short trip. Great beer and staff.

Google
Haven’t been to the brewery but the brews are top notch.

Google
My favorite brewery in Chattanooga. Lots of beer options even for someone who doesn't like IPAs. If you like IPAs you'll be in heaven. Staff is very knowledgeable and super friendly. I feel like a regular on my yearly stop in town.

Google
Update 8/24 Still one of the best places to get a beer in Chattanooga. There is always a great selection to choose from. Update 6/19/23: I always love coming back here. I think we stop by everytime we are in town. Great beer and great atmosphere, as usual. Another great micro brewery that Chattanooga has to offer. This is a must go to place for any beer lover. Great selection of beer on tap and beer to go. Super friendly and very knowledgeable beertenders. The perfect place to go to if you want to get a drink and just chill. Also, all their beers are amazing. 🍻

Yelp
What a gem. Hutton and Smith, whose motto is "gneiss beer for people who give a schist," represents "old" Chattanooga -- a small, homey brewery with somewhat left-field, hit-or-miss lagers, ales, IPAs, etc. H&S is a community brewery where dogs and humans commingle and talk: there are no television screens in the bar area, and if you sit down, you'll be treated like an old friend.

Yelp
Love their beer so much that I joined their club. They are always so friendly and just accommodating.

Yelp
This is a good brewery with a strong local following. They have a core group of really tasty beers. You'll find several of their beers offered at a variety of local restaurants, a testimony to the quality produced. This is a microbrewery though, and they serve no food. Unlike many of their local competitors, they choose not to offer many new beers, an attribute that resonates poorly with me. Additionally, they don't keep the content of their website current, another weakness versus their competitors. Good, not great and while it is physically the closest microbrewery to my home, my visits have grown infrequent, a big shift from when I first moved to this market.

Yelp
This past Saturday afternoon, tensions were high amongst "the fam", so I struck out on my own seeking a calm harbor in which I might drop my anchor, if only for a short while. Within minutes of posting up at Hutton & Smith, I knew I'd found my spot. An entity from The Enlightenment -- the Parisian "Salon" -- is at the forefront of my thinking concerning this fine taproom. For about three hours, I conversed with a diverse assortment of other beer aficionados on a wide array of subjects. Sports. Physics. Geography. Politics. Travel. Poker. Poetry. The spinning of wooden tops. Music. The intersection of all of these. And the beer? Well I'll just be direct: the folks at Hutton & Smith are producing the most excellent brews in the entirety of the Chattanooga area. And, unlike other similar entities, they've not felt the need to erect mall-sized arenas conducive to screaming children, lines like WallyWorld on Black Friday, and a vast, unnecessary array of distractions that do nothing to improve the simple experience of drinking beer and conversing with other humans. In my not-at-all humble opinion, Hutton & Smith is the premier place to sample in-house craft beer in this beautiful city. If you're looking to avoid the pomp and circumstance, sit calmly as the liquid nectars flow, and interact with fellow earthlings in an enlightening fashion, don't waste your time at any other area taproom or brewery. Do yourself a favor: VISIT HUTTON & SMITH.

Yelp
Delicious banana Hefeweizen and lime craft beer! Nice little brewery with friendly beertender!

Yelp
We came in from out of town and wanted to try some local beers. We love the rock themed names. We love the cats. Paul's music playlist was totally my husband's jam. Leslie made a fantastic dinner recommendation. Ohh yeah and the beer is good too. You know sometimes a great brewery is more than just great beer. Everything is so on point here. Stop in for a flight if you can.

Yelp
First off it's a comfortable place nice bar and couches to sit and drink beer , we both had a flight of beers and then we chose what we liked , service was great beer was cold and very fresh , really nice . Bonus is champy's chicken is half a block away . Great brewery!

Yelp
Very cool brewery. Bar tender very nice and regulars cool with us tourists and animals! They are having a Friendsgiving for the regulars.

Jamie J.

Yelp
Atmosphere was ok. It took the bartender several tries to get my beer poured as it had a lot of foam when coming out of the tap. Also the temp was a little warmer than I prefer which is probably what caused some of the foam.

Yelp
Spent the day in Chattanooga with some friends and had a wonderful time enjoying the local food, entertainment, etc. A highlight of the day was Hutton & Smith Brewing where we stayed for a couple of hours enjoying many of their beers. I have to say that my favorites of the day were their stouts. The Vanilla Stout was good but the Doppelbock they had on tap was by far my favorite. I even ended up bringing some home with me in a growler.

Melissa D.

Yelp
Dillan is the best. Some really good beers here, great music, and a very chill vibe. We will be sure to return.

Yelp
The initial entrance is a bit cramped, but if you walk past the bar, then there's a nice, open room with tables and couches to sit at. Indoor and outdoor areas are dog friendly, gender neutral bathrooms, full pours and half pours are available, and a self pour water tap is out. Alright selection of beers, but they do rotate by season. I recommend the vanilla nitro stout! Reason for 4 stars is the service was just okay.

Yelp
Definitely one of our favorite breweries to hit up when we visit Chattanooga. On our most recent trip, we came in on a Tuesday and took advantage of their Tallboy Tuesday - $3 tallboys. After a grueling mountain hike in the summer heat on Wednesday, we decided a return trip was necessary, and were treated to pint night! Huge. Bartenders are chill and knowledgeable and the digs are comfy and fairly spacious. We played a few games of shuffleboard, then toyed around with the SNES in the back (very satisfying for the ol' inner child). Bonus, they're dog-friendly!

Yelp
We've really been digging on Hutton & Smith's beers since we moved back to Chatt - I always buy their IPA's from Sigler's, right next to where I work. So, we finally decided to check out their taproom a few nights ago! Super small, dark space around the main bar - they've got a few small tables and the regular barstools. There was a couple hanging out in there with their doggo, which made me really happy, lol. We walked up to the counter and ordered a couple of flights - bartender was super friendly! To the left hand side of the main, dark room, there's a doorway that leads to a larger, better lit space, with several tables, some couches, a few game tables, and their whiskey barrels for their aged beers. We liked this room a lot more, they had some groovy art on the walls and people were chilling, playing cards and whatnot. Brews were fabulous, all around - they have a really good selection of IPA's, sours, and a few stouts/porters to round out the options. That BA Belgian dark stout will put you on your rear, so be careful with that one, haha. Overall, great experience and really cool to get to try some of their beers that aren't widely distributed in Chattanooga stores!

Yelp
Our friends recommended we try thjs brewery, so on our way to our vacation spot, we stopped off and got a flight of beers. I was impressed with the range of beers. There are several places to sit - one small area next to the bar, a larger game room with lots of seating, and an outdoor area, nicely shaded. Dogs are allowed inside and outside. My favorite beer was the Magic Mama (New England IPA), followed by the Pyrose and the Gatiño Gose. But I like smooth and tart. We bought a bottle of the Vulcanite Barrel Aged Golden Sour, which was awesome. A just okay beer to me was the session IPA (Tremont's Tectonic), but I think it's because it was milder than what I wanted. Oh, the Diatomaceous Dry Stout was really good. Also, super nice folks working the bar. And a pretty diverse and chill group of customers.

Yelp
We stopped in on our last day in Chattanooga and while we were impressed with almost every beer we tried (we each had a flight) we just didn't feel very welcome. The female bartender was polite and kind but just not warm and welcoming. The gentleman behind the counter never even made eye contact with us. Coming from FL where we have tons of small craft breweries we were just a tad less than impressed with the warmth of the place. Def a locals hang out and maybe they want to keep it that way.
google avatar

Yelp
We came to Chattanooga, from Birmingham, expecting the brewery scene to be similar. We were slightly disappointed that pretty much every brewery in town would not allow dogs in the taproom EXCEPT this one. They welcomed us in and took fabulous care of us. Y'all need to check this place out!!

Yelp
Stopped by here while we were out celebrating my 30th birthday on a rainy Sunday. I love how quaint the space is. Exposed brick and two small rooms. Large bar with seating. Luckily it wasn't busy when we showed up. I can't imagine how this place might look on a Friday or Saturday. The bartender was so kind! Truly a large part of the great experience. I was very impressed with the number of beers they had on tap and the number of styles. I always enjoy getting flights. I really was floored with the prices. $3.50 for a 5 ounce?! Wow. My flight cost me over $13 and that's for just over a pint of beer. Yes, I did have some higher gravity styles on the flight, but I still feel as if this is too pricey. Overall, I wasn't too impressed with the beers. Maybe it all had to do with the bad taste the prices put in my mouth. I will go back when I return to Chattanooga. The staff was great and I love the space. Congrats on the recent medal!

Yelp
Good beer and a great atmosphere. Staff is attentive and friendly. Tours and merch are available.

Yelp
A tiny taproom with a great variety of beers on tap. I went with my mom and husband. We sat, enjoyed a couple of flights, and played some cards for a few hours. What's not to like? Love these Chattanooga MLK breweries!

Yelp
First time at Hutton & Smith Brewing. I'm not a big beer gal, but I'm broadening my palate. This brewery has an awesome vibe. Rusty really enjoyed the stout and the bar tender Dillon was super helpful in offering suggestions and grabbing samples for me until we found the perfect drink! Love the Slick Rock Pale Ale! Thanks for the recommendation! We will definitely be back!

Louis D.

Yelp
Great atmosphere and beer. Service was awesome! Will definitely be returning in the future.

Yelp
Even as a non-drinker, I LOVE coming to Hutton & Smith. The atmosphere and staff is incredible and I am in love with the new renovation they have done (especially the shuffle board table!!) What I think makes Hutton unique compared to the other breweries and bars on MLK is that you get to feel a part of the process. Heck, as you order you are standing by the drums making the beer, you get to see the inner workings, chemistry, and all that is involved. Any reasonable joint in Chattanooga knows to have Hutton & Smith either on tap or as an option. And getting to feel a part of the process while spending time with friends and either enjoying the open air or spacious couches makes it a truly unique, wonderful, and Chattanooga experience

Yelp
On a Saturday in February after a photoshoot, my husband and I had a little time to kill before dinner, so we decided to check something off our Chattanooga Bucket List (a list which seems to grow by leaps and bounds every week) and visit Hutton & Smith Brewing Company in downtown Chattanooga. We got there at 4:30 on a Saturday afternoon, and we got the last seat at the bar! It is very small though, with a small bar area and a handful of seats by the front window. There was so much to choose from, it was like being a kid in a candy store. Luckily my husband and I are very similar in our beer tastes, although I admit, he has broader tastes in beer than I do. I am pretty much an IPA fanatic. The hoppier the better. Along with the beer menu, they give you a sheet of paper where you write your four choices. You can see, we chose Rope Gun Rye, Coffee IPA, Igneous IPA, and Vanilla Porterledge. Everything was excellent! If I had to pick a favorite if would be the Coffee IPA. So yummy. Very enjoyable time, will definitely be back to sample some more!
google avatar

Bradley K.

Yelp
This is one of the best microbreweries I've been to. The atmosphere was amazing, all of the workers were friendly and had great advice for us. All the beers were great especially the Wild Ale and Vanilla Stout. The best part about the brewery is that they are dog friendly and allow your dogs inside, which our little four legged children enjoyed! If you're a brewhead and you're in Chattanooga this is definitely a stop for you!
google avatar

Alex P.

Yelp
We came here while visiting Chattanooga to taste the city's beers. The space itself was pretty cool with some fun activities to do. Pretty average for a brewery but definitely fun. The beer really impressed me and was probably my favorite during my visit to Tennessee. I had a flight with their Alt, Doppelbock, and two sours. The alt was solid. The Doppelbock was quite tasty and a wonderful example of the style. The two sours really went above and beyond. Though the name escapes me, one sour was reddish and brewed with Kveik yeast. This beer took the cake for best beer during my visit - it was truly delicious and well rounded. Overall, this is a pretty average space with incredibly exceptional beer!
google avatar

Billy B.

Yelp
They have so many craft made beers in this place it's boggling. Is so tiny and yet, they have like 20 something beers on tap they making house. I don't know if they swarm in their own basement or what but it's inspiring. And thank God, they have finally added some baby food options. It ain't nothing major, but it beats having all that beer on an empty stomach. Without a doubt, the best part about Hutton and Smith is they allow dogos. So except that is the trade-off for having little to no food options. The bar area is so much smaller and claustrophobic. It's definitely but too but we're chest to chest to slide through and order a beer. That is probably the only complaint I have of this place. Hutton and Smith definitely stands out as one of the local breweries on this side of town.
google avatar

Brady C.

Yelp
Excellent variety of beers. I really enjoyed their wild ales and fruited sours. We were able to bring our dog inside and there was a huge secondary room that added onto the space. The main bartender was Excellent and really added to the experience.
google avatar

Jay E.

Yelp
The beer was all very tasty. IPAs were all hoppy and delicious. We were there on Oct 3, 2019 and were about to leave, after several rounds, when my wife decided we were going to stay and do Trivia. Apparently the beer also improves your IQ the more you drink as we won. Of course that meant we had to take several sixers home to increase our brain power. Supposedly a trivia finals in Dec. Hopefully we can make it.
google avatar

Julie B.

Yelp
I have been to almost all of our local breweries and in my opinion this one beats them all. I am an IPA fan and this is where I think H&S kicks butt. All of their beer selections are solid but their IPAs are special. Had a conversation with one of the brewer/waitress/handy people on their brewing techniques and I believe it comes down to how they handle their water. Chattanooga water is horrible for brewing hoppy beers. H&S purifies their water and then adds back the minerals per style. I am sure others do this too but not as well as here. Was a bit disappointed to not have the IPA on draft last night and in my opinion the vanilla stout could use more vanilla but overall I am always delighted by the beer selection and taste. Plenty of good beers to pick from. Now if they just had food in the place I could find reasons not to leave.
google avatar

Lauren L.

Yelp
This is my favorite brewery in Chattanooga. The perfect blend of great beer, laid back atmosphere, and personable staff. They have a good variety of beers, light, dark, malty, hoppy, sour, sweet. This is where you want to hang out with your friends, after work or on a weekend afternoon after a hike.
google avatar

Jaime K.

Yelp
I decided to go to H&S with my son, his girlfriend, my husband, a friend, and my baby sis who works in the brewing industry on pint night a few weeks back. We lucked out and got a table and several of us enjoyed flights since we had not tried any of their beers. It was PACKED, noisy, with music on to 11, and full of people enjoying good beer. I gave it a 4 simply bc the music* was so intense we left within half hour and we were going hoarse to talk over it. *cool soundtracks
google avatar

Jason B.

Yelp
As a local Chattanoogan, I would encourage any beer lover to stop in to Hutton and Smith. The lovely people running the show leave every guest wanting more. Their beers are spot on and their atmosphere is neighborly and simple. Even though they are new to brewing on this scale, the beer is competitive in the city. You're wasting your time reading this review. Just pack up the minivan and get over there.
google avatar

Don K.

Yelp
Visited on a Saturday night and it was packed! All they serve is the beer, so eat somewhere else. One server only and she was hoppng, but kept a pleasant demeanor. Sort of all ages. I'm a porter and stout drinker and they had more than enough on tap for me. The vanilla coffee porter was better than expected. The milk stout was good. Vanilla nitrous and the dry stout nitrous were very good. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Ashley O.

Yelp
The staff today was amazing! It was a little awkwardly uncomfortable inside, no games, tv or music , but the outside area to sit was great. Beers we tried were wonderful. Glad we stopped. The only reason we would ever come back would be for the awesome staff!
google avatar

Aubrey W.

Yelp
It's a tiny taproom, but they have lots of great beers! Much better prices than some of the Nashville stuff too. We got some tasters and really liked them. We even took home a crowler (growler can) of their Scotch ale, which means we definitely enjoyed the beer, right? That was probably my favorite beer while we were there. I also love their branding and tap handles. Very clean and cool!
google avatar

Nolan T.

Yelp
One of my favorite breweries in town. Awesome selection of many different beers. Very relaxed atmosphere. Love hangin in the back room with the couches and playing shuffleboard table
google avatar

Kim B.

Yelp
Highly recommended. We left w a T-shirt . Matt was a great guy. Blackberry beer and their dark stout was awesome. My husband liked his choices too. Place had a nice local vibe to it.
google avatar

Mike C.

Yelp
Great craft beer and awesome vibe. Only been here once and can't wait to come again and try another flight. Priscilla was awesome!!! She had so much knowledge on beer and was a stellar worker! We came in around 7:30 and it was dead. 5 mins and it suddenly was packed and she was the only person working, yet she still gave us phenomal service!
google avatar

Trip S.

Yelp
These guys are doing things. The space is not the greatest, but man the beer is the best in Chattanooga IMO. Service excellent as well.
google avatar

Karen H.

Yelp
Excellent brewery off MLK. Not a huge bar, but a pretty extensive and diverse beer list. I really liked the saison, the black IPA and the stout (the others I tried were really good, those were just the three I'd go back to again and again). These folks know what they're doing.

Chris W.

Yelp
Tiny highly recommended brewery. The place is super small what's more the limited serving area is shared with more than half a dozen brew kettles. Doesn't slow them down. They still have more than 20 styles available. The wait staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. I happened to come on $3.00 pint night. Every Wednesday. I sampled a few after reading the extensive menu. I went with the seismic saison as a palate cleanser before trying the popular Belay On and lastly the Belgium Tripel. The saison was a clean mild dry finish. A very good beer. The Belay was a hoped up blonde with a mild bitterness. Another solid offering. Lastly I went for the Belgium Tripel. The Benchmark Belgium was a medium bodied solid Tripel. I was torn between this and the Black IPA. Mostly because not every brewery offers a Tripel and most don't have a black IPA. Not to diminish the citrus hopped Black IPA, but I definitely liked the Tripel. Great small bar. Tons of exploration. Tons of tying new things. I would be a regular here if I lived in the area. In the next few wks they're expanding. Doubling their existing space. This place is cool. There's a garage bay with a modest seating area along with a bar top. Doubling the space will improve the I'm sorry I just bumped into you vibe. Except for me I think someone there knew the name of virtually everyone in the place. There were maybe 2 dozen people there upon my arrival which was boarder-line capacity for the existing space. The expansion will make a decided improvement in space. Good beer nice folks. I liked it a lot. I will likely go back before this trip is over. Next Wednesday probably.
google avatar

Craig L.

Yelp
I absolutely love their beer. Great tasting room. The number of great beers these people make is pretty amazing. This would be a five star review if they had more than one bartender on duty. Took way too long to get served. This whole area is really turning into a great part of town. Hint, if you like a citrus IPA, try that Promenade. One of the best beers I have ever had. Now a staple in my beer fridge at home. They also have an ESB. I am a big fan of a good pint of Bitters and this is a very good one. We will be back and I hope the understaffed issue is temporary.
google avatar

Hollee C.

Yelp
Cozy atmosphere, went based on great reviews. But be aware that it is not kid-friendly. We were told this and asked to leave after they had poured our drinks and let us pay. So we paid for beer we did not consume which was crummy business. But hope to try again bc the brews looked awfully good.
google avatar

Laura S.

Yelp
We sat at the bar with the previous day's batch bubbling behind us fermenting in the blow off. No glass separating us from the scent of fermentation and hops ....this is the way beer should be brewed and tasted The Plutonic is the favorite of my husband - keep brewing it please! IAcross the board it is just a fabulous experience
google avatar

Jen B.

Yelp
We stopped by here on our last night in town to pick up some beer to take home. The bartender was super friendly and helpful. They had a big selection of beers, and he did a great job helping us narrow it down. We ended up with a couple crowlers of their anniversary releases (ginger saison and wild ale), and also grabbed a 6 pack of Promenade IPA.

Amber N.

Yelp
Our party arrived for a celebration of family being in town for the holidays. We were treated so disrespectfully by the individual closing the bar. From turning the lights off in the seating area to repeatedly saying the "F" word to us as we left, it was so terrible. We love the beer but seriously, get some employees that know how to respect people.
google avatar

Russell M.

Yelp
Basic bad microbrews. Lots of flavors but from the four or five I tasted none were good. Way overpriced and not a comfortable atmosphere. 7 bucks for an IPA. That's just too much for mediocre.
google avatar

Lisa M.

Yelp
While Chattanooga definitely has a wide variety of breweries to check out, Hutton & Smith Brewing is a pretty cool one that does it best to stand out. The brewery itself isn't large in space, but it has a cozy feel, without being too packed even on a Friday night. They have a wide interesting selection on their menu for every taste. I tried a cider and Belgium and both were pretty good. It can get a little loud with the music, but not obnoxious, it's still an enjoyable atmosphere. They have a cool garage door opening that's probably pretty awesome for good weather and they are dog friendly, which is helpful. Perfect spot for meeting up and hanging out here with a group of friends.
