When It Comes to Summer, Nothing Beats the Northeast

"We stayed at the recently opened Huttopia Adirondacks, near Lake George, New York, another of those iconic Northeastern summertime towns; it evinced none of the bougieness you might associate with glamping, but did have a delightfully whimsical French touch. It was probably the most successful trip we took last summer: The kids got S’mores, hang time in the woods, and a pool, while their parents got real beds, a gas grill, and a restaurant serving Nutella crepes and Croque Monsieurs when they didn’t want to have to deal with cooking. And all of us loved every minute of our off-site fun, from the thrills and chills of whitewater rafting with the family-run Sacandaga Outdoor Center to the 18 swashbuckling holes we played at Pirate’s Cove Adventure Golf in the heart of Lake George. After checking out, we drove north to Natural Stone Bridge & Caves, another family-run operation that claims to be the largest marble cave entrance in the Eastern United States and has a delightfully kitschy gift shop that carries enormous glittering geodes and Adirondacks coffee mugs that appear to be deadstock from the 1970s."

Huttopia Adirondacks

"Why book? Especially if you’re traveling with kids, there is no better way to experience the abundant beauty of New York’s Adirondack Mountains than this thoughtful, unpretentious glamping experience from French company Huttopia. Nearby Lake George, one of America’s original summer resort destinations, can feel crowded and touristy in the summer, but on this 375-acre site just a few miles away you’ll feel like you’ve gotten away from it all, while still having access to all the region has to offer. If you want the comfort and ease of glamping without the over-the-top fanciness of certain glamping brands, Huttopia is for you.  Set the scene  Huttopia Adirondacks is nestled at the foot of Mount Kenyon, about three and a half hours north of New York City, within the boundary of the vast Adirondack Park. You pull off a two-lane rural road and onto a steep dirt road that winds through the woods, passing French and American flags, until reaching a clearing where the main lodge and pool sit. Inside, the staffers are mostly French, young, and charming, while the guests are predominantly families hailing from New York, Pennsylvania, New England, Ontario, and Quebec. The atmosphere is convivial. Beyond the treeline lie the 109 tents, which are spaced wide apart and offer plenty of privacy. They are deliberately placed far enough from the parking area to insulate guests from headlights and the sound of cars on gravel; wheeled wagons are available to transport your stuff up to your tent.  The backstory  Launched in 2000, Huttopia now operates dozens of sites throughout France, as well as a few in the Netherlands. But the seeds of the company were planted during founders Céline and Philippe Bossanne’s years living in Toronto in the ’90s, during which time they often visited the Canadian and American National Parks. So it was only natural that they would expand to North America, beginning with Quebec in 2015 and followed by a handful of sites across the U.S—including this one, which opened in the summer of 2021.   The rooms There are four tent types on the premises, ranging from the minimal Trappeur Duo Nature, which sleeps two, to the more fully equipped Trappeur +, which claims to be able to sleep up to five, though it was hard for me to imagine the one my family stayed in holding more than the four of us. Our tent had two sleeping areas, one with a double bed and one with a bunk bed, sandwiching an extremely compact bathroom. The rest of the space contained a couple of comfy chairs facing a wood stove and a well-stocked kitchenette. The quarters were tight but sufficient, especially since the point of the experience was to be outside. To that end, I was grateful for the expansive wooden deck and the gas grill, where I cooked all of our meals, crouching over the fire-pit only to roast S’mores after dinner.  Food and drink  Inside the lodge there is a simple French bistro that serves brick-oven pizzas, crepes, Croque Monsieurs and Madames, salad Niçoise, fresh juices, espresso drinks, and a broad selection of beers. You’ll likely exhaust the short menu in a single long weekend, but everything is tasty—it’s perhaps the most overt example of the delightful French touch that pervades the entire Huttopia experience.  The neighborhood Huttopia Adirondacks pulls off the remarkable feat of feeling like it’s in the middle of nowhere while simultaneously being in the middle of everything. It’s only about a 10-minute drive to the village of Lake George, which has grocery stores, plentiful restaurants, several miniature golf courses, and more tchotchke shops than you can shake a stick at. In the nearby region you can also find a Six Flags, numerous historical sites, tons of kayak and canoe rental places, and some absolutely lovely Adirondacks hiking trails. Two recommendations: Sacandaga Outdoor Center, a well-run family operation that operates stupendously fun whitewater rafting trips for the whole family, and Natural Stone Bridge & Caves, a bit to the north, which claims to be the largest marble cave entrance in the Eastern United States, and is a wonderful little pocket of Americana.  The service While most of the Huttopia experience is D.I.Y., the service at reception, the camp store, and the bistro is fast, friendly, and French. The people who work here are a delight.  For families The entire experience is tailor-made for families, but one amenity I’ll single out, which Huttopia added in 2022, is the pool. I hadn’t really thought of a pool as something I needed from a glamping experience, but parents will understand how fantastic it is to have the pool where the kids can take a quick dip after a Nutella crepe in the morning or when they’re hot and sweaty in the late afternoon returning from a forced hike in the forest. There is also a simple play structure near the pool. In addition, there are many kid-friendly activities on Huttopia’s packed programming schedule; my children did some rock painting and watched a magic show. The camp store sells s’mores kits, and the lodge is equipped with board games and a foosball table.  Eco effort  One of the company’s core values is conservation and protection of natural resources, which is why in many of the places it operates (including France, the Netherlands, Canada, and several countries to which it hopes to expand) it has forged close cooperative relationships with National Parks. It has also created the Huttopia Foundation, dedicated to the development of ecotourism infrastructure and educating travelers on the tenets of responsible tourism.  Accessibility Huttopia Adirondacks offers ADA-compliant accommodations and bathroom facilities designed for guests with limited mobility. But uneven ground is part of the package in a glamping experience, so visitors with concerns should contact the camp before booking. Anything left to mention?  One of Huttopia’s core principles and distinguishing features is its commitment to supporting the local community and facilitating experiences that help guests get to know the region and its people. That means frequently bringing folks from the surrounding area, including magicians, yoga instructors, and artists, into the camp to lead activities. It also means offering help in putting together a Lake George itinerary during your stay—they even keep a giant binder on the premises packed with their recommendations for restaurants, farmers markets, outfitters, craft boutiques, and more." - Jesse Ashlock

I have mixed feelings about this place. We spent $1000 during Memorial Day weekend. We understand it was the holiday, and we had a great time with family, but we are wondering if that was worth it if we think back about the facilities. The roughness of the wilderness was great, but some areas needed to be checked and taken care of before customers came to stay. The cleanliness was the main issue. The bathroom and the bedding were clean, but the bed frames and floor had noticeable dust. It felt like the place wasn't ready for the visitors. It was almost like it was only partially cleaned, like changing bed sheets and emptying trash cans and towels. There were multiple noticeable holes on the floor. The place could have shown more effort. Other amenities, like the pool and cafes, looked great. I didn't get to try their cafe food, but they had different on-site activities to enjoy. It is a great place to stay and enjoy the wilderness if cleanliness isn't your priority.

I came with my 6yo daughter and we had a wonderful time at Huttopia! Our tent was well-appointed and completely suited our needs. The staff went above and beyond to help us get comfortable, including, I am embarrassed to say, helping shepherd a fairly large wolf spider out of our tent on the first night. Next time I'll probably request a site closer to the main building and parking lot since we were frequently leaving Huttopia to explore the beautiful Adirondacks and mini golf courses in Lake George!

Went here for hubs 42 birthday. He loves camping and I am allergic to outdoors. This made camping for me bearable. We had a great time reading and enjoying the peace. Great for first time campers and I can definitely see a family having a blast.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Our family recently spent 10 days at Huttopia Adirondacks, and the experience was nothing short of extraordinary. As someone who’s spent considerable time living in military tents, I can confidently say that these tents felt like the Ritz Carlton in comparison. Huttopia has truly put together a fantastic setup. The infrastructure – plumbing, electrical, and sewer systems – is solid and well-designed, providing a comfortable and enjoyable stay. Sure, there are minor things that could be improved, but our overall experience was overwhelmingly positive. The staff at Huttopia deserves special mention. Josie is incredibly friendly and professional, making us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. Cailey, the park ambassador, oversees the reservations, restaurant, and maintenance teams with remarkable skill. She’s been with Huttopia Adirondacks since it opened four years ago and her dedication is evident. Cailey is approachable, considerate, and always receptive to feedback. Her daily rounds to check on the facilities and camp sites highlight her genuine care for the camp and its guests. The maintenance crew is diligent and responsive. After a heavy rain one evening, they promptly regraded the pathways to ensure the safety of all guests. The meal management team did a wonderful job as well, ensuring that everything was up to standard and that Cailey could be proud of their efforts. The facilities at Huttopia are impressive. The community center is spacious and inviting, perfect for relaxing with a drink or a bite to eat. While the gift shop is small, it offers a variety of useful items to enhance your stay. The heated pool was a big hit with everyone, though do remember to bring your own towels. There are plenty of board games, books, and coloring materials to keep everyone entertained. Parking is abundant, level, and easily accessible, making our comings and goings hassle-free. We stayed in the Trappeur tent, which comfortably accommodates 4-5 people. The tent is well-equipped with utensils, pots, pans, glasses, coffee mugs, a kettle, and a cutting board. It also features a mini fridge, two sinks, a toilet, and a shower. The beds are incredibly comfortable, complete with sheets, pillows, and warm comforters to keep us cozy at night. The wood stove was a delightful addition, perfect for cooler nights and providing a cozy ambiance. The park itself is meticulously maintained, clean, and safe. The pathways are well-lit at night, making navigation easy and safe. Our experience at Huttopia Adirondacks was truly memorable, and we highly recommend it to any family looking for a unique and enjoyable camping experience. If you’re seeking a quiet, peaceful, and tranquil escape, you should highly consider this location. We’ve added photos and videos to help you get a better picture of our stay. We can’t wait to return!

Absolutely fabulous stay! We traveled with 2 adults and 3 kids, and 1 dog. Loved how comfortable and well appointed the tents were, they had everything we needed! The amenities are awesome: we splashed in the pool, played board games, listed to live music, went on a hike, and then built a bonfire and roasted s'mores. Location is perfect - just 10 minutes to the downtown of Lake George, and 10 minutes to Six Flags. The kids had a blast and are begging to come back. Would recommend!

Just got back from a weekend at Huttopia. We had a really lovely experience. The rooms were charming and ideal for “glamping”. Our room faced the woods which provided extra privacy. There was hot water and great water pressure and full working bathroom in our tent. The site is very dog friendly and the common areas were clean and welcoming. Just a short ten minute drive from Lake George and all that it has to offer. Only suggestions would be more food options on site and the walking trails in the woods on-site are not well maintained (but there is ample hiking in surrounding areas). Looking forward to coming back soon

We loved this glamping experience. The tent is quite comfy and has everything you need. And we had fire pit next to the tent. It’s really great to stay in the forest and has everything you need, including electricity. If you are a person who needs to shower every night but wanna stay close in the nature with camping experience, this is it! And the tent is quite spacious!

This was our 3rd and likely last stay with Huttopia, which we have loved so dearly until this visit. We have been to both the White Mountains and Southern Maine locations, which have far exceeded our expectations. However, the stay in the Adirondacks left much to be desired. For starters, the staff at this location was far from friendly, which was something we always enjoyed at the other two locations in the Northeast and should be the minimum expectation in the hospitality industry. Upon entering our accommodation, there was confetti on the floor from the previous guests, as well as hair all over the entire bathroom floor. I had to sweep up before we could even more our stuff in. There was old food in the refrigerator and we later discovered an old package of hamburger buns behind the fridge when a mouse was snacking on it at 4 am. Critters are to be expected but proper clean up of food from previous guests would have eliminated this encounter. Furthermore, the bedsheets were stained and the bed support under the mattress was broken. We were provided with two towels for the entire stay, which needed to be used for drying dishes, drying hands, showering, etc. When we requested more towels from one of the staff members, she rudely told us we only get two towels and could ask at the main desk if they could provide more (a 15 minute walk from our accommodation). Overall, the experience left much to be desired and definitely soured our beloved Huttopia experiences. The staff was less than approachable during our stay and when contacting the Huttopia team after our stay, they said there was nothing they could do since I didn't mention it while we were on the grounds. Note: (Yes, that is a large dead millipede in the food photo. It was there on our arrival and is further evidence of lack of cleaning prior to our arrival.)
