Exploring Swedish Lapland Through the Eyes of the Indigenous Community

"If you're arriving during the summer months, you can book an outdoor Sámi dining experience with Huuva Hideaway in Liehittäjä. The €125 rustic picnic is set amidst a reindeer corral and even includes a mixology class where local ingredients — including spruce shoots and cloudberries — are worked into wholly unique adult beverages." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Spent two magical nights at Huuva Hidaway with my mom this past summer. Pia and Henry were incredible hosts and made us feel right at home as soon as we arrived. The food experiences and foraging were so delicious and we learned so much about the Sami culture. We also had a great time hiking nearby and being close to nature. The guest house was incredibly comfortable and fun to stay in, and we could not have asked for warmer hospitality. Staying at Huuva Hidaway was definitely a highlight of our trip. If you can visit, it’ll be an experience of a lifetime!

We had the best time at Huuva Hideaway. We visited in December and got to take the kick sleds around to find Santa and then Pia made us lunch and taught us about the Sampi culture. It was our favorite part of our Lapland trip. It was just so authentic and personal, Pia was so warm and inviting. And the hideaway is super cozy. It felt like we were having lunch with family-really comfortable but learned so much. Santa gave hand made gifts to the kids and we even got some local treats and books. And we can’t forgot the dogs-nasty and Lucas were an added bonus. Highly recommend visiting if you have the opportunity-you will not be disappointed

We highly recommend this stay for the huge variety of experiences (nature, Sami and Swedish culture); and warm, smart hosts Pia and Henry. The environment is beautiful and can lull you into a retreat mentality. I suggest also to be brave and try the many new experiences Huuva offers you. As the world becomes more globalised and samey, there are deep reasons to approach this as a rare opportunity. It’s also best to plan for a preferred season, with consideration for clothes and mosquito-management!

My girlfriend and I participated in the outdoor cooking experience. Pia, Henry and Maja introduced us to Sami cuisine and shared many exciting facts about Sami culture. With their help, we baked flatbread, mixed outdoor drinks, tasted gurpi, and discovered many other delicious delights. The event was superbly organized in all aspects, and the hosts were warm and knowledgeable. The day in the beautiful locations brought us immense joy. We will recommend this adventure to our friends and would love to come again. Thank you very much.

We highly recommend making the trip to see Pia and Henry's beautiful outdoor cooking and foraging experience! This was honestly our biggest highlight of our trip through all of scandinavia. We were greeted with the most enthusiastic and passionate hosts who shared with us stories about their food, local foraging and their Sami ancestors. This is what we came to this land for! To connect with the land, nature and it's people who care for it. Their property is also very beautiful and they were the most hospitable hosts, sharing their knowledge of traditional sauna and hot dogs by the amazing sunset on their lake. Thank you again Huuva family for having us, much love and see you again soon we hope! Naomi & Taran

We had a wonderful time with Maja, Pia and Henry Huuva, the two dogs Lucas and Nasti and another traveller Alex from England. The edible and drinkable country experience includes everything one can hope for - amazing food and drinks, interesting storytelling, gorgeous nature - we recommend this beautiful experience to the fullest! Thank you for everything.
