Here's What You Need to Know About Hvammsvík Hot Springs

"Set on a hilly peninsula overlooking Hvalfjörður (Whale Fjord), this remote nature resort opened in 2022 and combines dramatic fjord scenery with geothermal bathing: eight rock-rimmed natural hot springs sit right by the shore with temperatures ranging from about 95°F to 104°F, and some lower pools are mild or even submerged at high tide while a short walk down the beach offers a salty cold plunge into the Atlantic. The site has deep historical roots—first settled by Vikings in the 11th century and later used as an Allied naval base codenamed “Falcon Beach” during World War II—and also supports contemporary comforts, including a modernist, art-filled bathhouse with communal and private changing areas, showers, a geothermal sauna, a swim-up bar (with cocktails and seaweed-based wellness shots) and a bistro serving Icelandic dishes like seafood stew and open-faced sourdough sandwiches. Wildlife sightings are part of the experience: staff frequently spot curious seals (nicknamed the “supervisors” or “quality managers”) and whales have been reported, including the recent return of humpbacks after a long absence; low light pollution also makes the location good for northern lights viewing in winter. Activities range from ocean swimming sessions, stand-up paddle boarding and Wim Hof breathing/cold-endurance classes to playful challenges like the stone-lifting Atlas Challenge; guests can stay overnight in restored historic farmhouses and cabins on the estate—most notably an elevated Hilltop House with panoramic views, a private hot spring and a glass-walled living room (the cabin traces back to the British Navy and is tied to wartime lore). The springs are open year-round weather permitting, admission starts around $65 USD and includes unlimited hot springs and sauna access, and visitors typically reach the site by rental car or booked transfers (for example, with Reykjavík Excursions)." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Super cool facility with multiple natural hot springs nestled into the beach overlooking the lake. They offer private changing rooms or communal rooms for a lower fee. I went with the communal and was totally fine, plenty of space and a few showers for before & after. Pick any of the 7 hot springs available in the area. The temperatures vary slightly but all are great. Beautiful views to enjoy while savoring the heat. Then walk down to the beach and take a cold plunge in the lake water. You can start inside the circle of rocks for a more gentle temperature, or venture outside the circle and get that ice cold lake water to shock the system. Once you're done with the hot springs, check out the steam room for an awesome ending to your visit. The room is slightly minty or something and feels wonderful. Highly recommend a visit!

This place was amazing. The scenery, the rock pools, the cold water dip in the sea. Best geothermal pool I’ve been to in my 6 Iceland visits so far. The cafe and seafood soup after were also great.

Amazing hot spring spa surrounded by stunning nature. The bath area is very clean yet feels natural rather than overly artificial. Soaking in a warm water while looking out the huge bay and majestic mountains was the perfect way to recover from a long road trip in Iceland. Their sauna is also very nice — popping into the natural cold water after the sauna felt so refreshing! We visited at 7pm, and by the end, it felt like a private experience. The staff were professional and friendly. We used Classic Plan, which included the clean inside changing room access with a spacious locker. You can easily use locker with an electric wrist band and also order drinks with it. The restaurant looked great too. And as someone who loves and misses Japanese hot springs, this experience was absolutely wonderful — both my body and soul felt so happy! Highly recommended!!!!

One of the most beautiful and relaxing hot spring experiences you can have. Set right on the edge of the ocean with surrounding mountains as a backdrop, the location feels incredibly peaceful and natural. The pools vary in temperature and are laid out in a way that lets you move between them while enjoying the stunning scenery. At high tide, some of the pools even blend with the sea, creating a unique experience you won’t find elsewhere. The facilities are modern and well-kept, with comfortable changing rooms and a cozy on-site restaurant and bar where you can enjoy a drink while soaking in the views. It feels upscale but still connected to the raw Icelandic nature all around. One thing to be aware of is that it can get busy, especially during peak travel times, so booking ahead is recommended. The weather can also be unpredictable, but that’s part of the charm—sitting in warm water while wind or even rain hits your face makes the experience even more memorable. Overall, Hvammsvík Hot Springs is a must-visit if you want to combine relaxation with some of Iceland’s most breathtaking coastal scenery.

Loved this experience! The pools were all natural and set into the rocks and beach. The mountains around it were stunning and so picturesque! The tubs weren’t too hot - a good mix of warm and hot. Definitely recommend doing a cold plunge in the ocean and warming up again in the baths. Few people carried around their towel (it was summer) and there was nowhere to really hang them up at each bath. Suggest leaving it in the change room so it is really dry when you are all done. Bring flip flops for sure. We didn’t use the swim up drinks window but the service and drinks looked great. We did have lunch there afterwards and wow - the food was so so good! Both of our dishes - the vegan soup and the avocado toast - were surprisingly high quality with really yum flavour profiles. Delicious! Highly recommend! Hidden gem. Worth the drive!

This was the single best experience I had in Iceland. Every minute you spend here, you are more and more grateful for your life and the Earth. There are different temperature hot springs and you can do a cold plunge right in the fjord. I didn't think i could do it - but slowly the longer I stayed, the more I relaxed and the braver I got. The reward was a sensory experience I've never had. It truly feels like you're in the middle of nowhere, luxuriating on another planet -- except it's our planet, which is exhilarating. The staff is super nice and friendly. The scents of the shampoos and body washes is invigorating and herbal, and I ended up going home with great stuff. Highly highly recommended!

I had reservations for a Tuesday starting at 14:00. I see some reviews stating it was crowded on the days they went, I had no such conditions, it was quiet and peaceful. The scenery here is drop dead gorgeous with the sea and the snow capped mountains for a back drop. I did the classical package plus $11 for the towel. In all it came out to $93USD. There are seven pools ranging from very hot to warm, the warm pool being the largest and closest to the restaurant. I spent two hours here which was more than enough time. I found the changing room and shower facilities along with the private locker more than adequate. I do find it funny though that you are required to shower before going in the hot tub while you’re allowed to go in with dirty slippers.

So beautiful! Lovely pools right on the ocean, nice variety of temperatures, and a stream room too. Staff were very friendly and helpful.
