Here's What You Need to Know About Hvammsvík Hot Springs

"Set on a hilly peninsula overlooking Hvalfjörður (Whale Fjord), this remote nature resort opened in 2022 and combines dramatic fjord scenery with geothermal bathing: eight rock-rimmed natural hot springs sit right by the shore with temperatures ranging from about 95°F to 104°F, and some lower pools are mild or even submerged at high tide while a short walk down the beach offers a salty cold plunge into the Atlantic. The site has deep historical roots—first settled by Vikings in the 11th century and later used as an Allied naval base codenamed “Falcon Beach” during World War II—and also supports contemporary comforts, including a modernist, art-filled bathhouse with communal and private changing areas, showers, a geothermal sauna, a swim-up bar (with cocktails and seaweed-based wellness shots) and a bistro serving Icelandic dishes like seafood stew and open-faced sourdough sandwiches. Wildlife sightings are part of the experience: staff frequently spot curious seals (nicknamed the “supervisors” or “quality managers”) and whales have been reported, including the recent return of humpbacks after a long absence; low light pollution also makes the location good for northern lights viewing in winter. Activities range from ocean swimming sessions, stand-up paddle boarding and Wim Hof breathing/cold-endurance classes to playful challenges like the stone-lifting Atlas Challenge; guests can stay overnight in restored historic farmhouses and cabins on the estate—most notably an elevated Hilltop House with panoramic views, a private hot spring and a glass-walled living room (the cabin traces back to the British Navy and is tied to wartime lore). The springs are open year-round weather permitting, admission starts around $65 USD and includes unlimited hot springs and sauna access, and visitors typically reach the site by rental car or booked transfers (for example, with Reykjavík Excursions)." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Amazing hot spring spa surrounded by stunning nature. The bath area is very clean yet feels natural rather than overly artificial. Soaking in a warm water while looking out the huge bay and majestic mountains was the perfect way to recover from a long road trip in Iceland. Their sauna is also very nice — popping into the natural cold water after the sauna felt so refreshing! We visited at 7pm, and by the end, it felt like a private experience. The staff were professional and friendly. We used Classic Plan, which included the clean inside changing room access with a spacious locker. You can easily use locker with an electric wrist band and also order drinks with it. The restaurant looked great too. And as someone who loves and misses Japanese hot springs, this experience was absolutely wonderful — both my body and soul felt so happy! Highly recommended!!!!

This was the single best experience I had in Iceland. Every minute you spend here, you are more and more grateful for your life and the Earth. There are different temperature hot springs and you can do a cold plunge right in the fjord. I didn't think i could do it - but slowly the longer I stayed, the more I relaxed and the braver I got. The reward was a sensory experience I've never had. It truly feels like you're in the middle of nowhere, luxuriating on another planet -- except it's our planet, which is exhilarating. The staff is super nice and friendly. The scents of the shampoos and body washes is invigorating and herbal, and I ended up going home with great stuff. Highly highly recommended!

Loved this experience! The pools were all natural and set into the rocks and beach. The mountains around it were stunning and so picturesque! The tubs weren’t too hot - a good mix of warm and hot. Definitely recommend doing a cold plunge in the ocean and warming up again in the baths. Few people carried around their towel (it was summer) and there was nowhere to really hang them up at each bath. Suggest leaving it in the change room so it is really dry when you are all done. Bring flip flops for sure. We didn’t use the swim up drinks window but the service and drinks looked great. We did have lunch there afterwards and wow - the food was so so good! Both of our dishes - the vegan soup and the avocado toast - were surprisingly high quality with really yum flavour profiles. Delicious! Highly recommend! Hidden gem. Worth the drive!

Just 56 km outside of Reykjavík lies a coastal paradise that’s easily the best hot spring experience in Iceland. Hvammsvik hot spring is nestled right on the beach. This unique spot offers breathtaking views of both mountains and the sea. Several beautifully designed pools vary in temperature, allowing you to soak exactly the way you like it. There’s even the option to plunge directly into the ocean — an exhilarating experience! The steam room is a welcome treat, and beverage service adds an extra touch of luxury. Birdwatchers will love the peaceful moments at low tide, when birds float by and feed among the rocks, adding to the serene ambiance. The facilities are exceptional — clean, modern, and thoughtfully planned. The change rooms are excellent, and lockers are available for your valuables, making for a worry-free visit. Staff are warm, welcoming, and happy to help with anything you need. Whether you’re there for a quick dip or a full day of relaxation, this place is an unforgettable experience. Remember to book in advance. Highly recommend Hvammsvik Hot Springs.

After going to the Blue Lagoon, we wanted to try a spot a bit less touristy. Hvammsvik delivered in all respects. It was far quieter (but still busy!) with a nice variety of pools to explore. The view at Hvammsvik really is the best part, it’s stunning. We managed to spend a few hours here trying the pools and eating a nice lunch at the cafe.

This is located about 1 hour drive northwest of Reykjavik. It has 10 pools including a tide pool in the ocean. The scenery is great and you can also get to experience the sauna room. The restaurant and lounge area feel warm and cozy as well. They also offer other activities such as hiking kayaking and yoga on the black sand beach.

What a relaxing and intimate setting. Two series of cascading pools that end in the ocean inlet provide water temperature choices that go from a very warm 104F down to around 95F. A final pool which revealed itself at low tide provided an icy plunge of 8C or around 40F. Many pool choices yielded an uncrowded experience, in a rural setting surrounded by mountains. Altogether, a friendly staff, clean and well-kept facilities, and relaxing pools surrounded by nature make this a good choice. Plus, if you take the coach from Reykjavik, your visit is accompanied by a scenic 45 minute trip through Iceland's stunning countryside.

This is, by far, the best lagoon/hot springs we have been to in Iceland. The choice and size of each pool were perfect. The different temperatures of each offered a different experience. The scenery was beautiful. You could spend hours just staring off into the distance. So relaxing and quiet. There was plenty of space when we were there, and we never felt crowded. The changing room was great. Private showers and there is a private changing cubicle if needed. You are given a wristband to use for the lockers(just hold it against lock), and this also gets you drinks at the lagoon window, which you then pay for on exit. We can't wait to go back!
