Here's What You Need to Know About Hvammsvík Hot Springs

"Set on a hilly peninsula overlooking Hvalfjörður (Whale Fjord), this remote nature resort opened in 2022 and combines dramatic fjord scenery with geothermal bathing: eight rock-rimmed natural hot springs sit right by the shore with temperatures ranging from about 95°F to 104°F, and some lower pools are mild or even submerged at high tide while a short walk down the beach offers a salty cold plunge into the Atlantic. The site has deep historical roots—first settled by Vikings in the 11th century and later used as an Allied naval base codenamed “Falcon Beach” during World War II—and also supports contemporary comforts, including a modernist, art-filled bathhouse with communal and private changing areas, showers, a geothermal sauna, a swim-up bar (with cocktails and seaweed-based wellness shots) and a bistro serving Icelandic dishes like seafood stew and open-faced sourdough sandwiches. Wildlife sightings are part of the experience: staff frequently spot curious seals (nicknamed the “supervisors” or “quality managers”) and whales have been reported, including the recent return of humpbacks after a long absence; low light pollution also makes the location good for northern lights viewing in winter. Activities range from ocean swimming sessions, stand-up paddle boarding and Wim Hof breathing/cold-endurance classes to playful challenges like the stone-lifting Atlas Challenge; guests can stay overnight in restored historic farmhouses and cabins on the estate—most notably an elevated Hilltop House with panoramic views, a private hot spring and a glass-walled living room (the cabin traces back to the British Navy and is tied to wartime lore). The springs are open year-round weather permitting, admission starts around $65 USD and includes unlimited hot springs and sauna access, and visitors typically reach the site by rental car or booked transfers (for example, with Reykjavík Excursions)." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Just 56 km outside of Reykjavík lies a coastal paradise that’s easily the best hot spring experience in Iceland. Hvammsvik hot spring is nestled right on the beach. This unique spot offers breathtaking views of both mountains and the sea. Several beautifully designed pools vary in temperature, allowing you to soak exactly the way you like it. There’s even the option to plunge directly into the ocean — an exhilarating experience! The steam room is a welcome treat, and beverage service adds an extra touch of luxury. Birdwatchers will love the peaceful moments at low tide, when birds float by and feed among the rocks, adding to the serene ambiance. The facilities are exceptional — clean, modern, and thoughtfully planned. The change rooms are excellent, and lockers are available for your valuables, making for a worry-free visit. Staff are warm, welcoming, and happy to help with anything you need. Whether you’re there for a quick dip or a full day of relaxation, this place is an unforgettable experience. Remember to book in advance. Highly recommend Hvammsvik Hot Springs.

What a relaxing and intimate setting. Two series of cascading pools that end in the ocean inlet provide water temperature choices that go from a very warm 104F down to around 95F. A final pool which revealed itself at low tide provided an icy plunge of 8C or around 40F. Many pool choices yielded an uncrowded experience, in a rural setting surrounded by mountains. Altogether, a friendly staff, clean and well-kept facilities, and relaxing pools surrounded by nature make this a good choice. Plus, if you take the coach from Reykjavik, your visit is accompanied by a scenic 45 minute trip through Iceland's stunning countryside.

The place is absolutely magical – breathtaking views, peaceful geothermal pools, and a truly authentic Icelandic atmosphere. What made our visit even more special was the outstanding service. A huge thank you to lifeguard Sylwia, who went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and safe. She shared interesting stories about the area and added a personal touch to our visit that we’ll always remember. The facilities were spotless, everything was well-organized, and the drinks were top quality. I highly recommend Hvammsvik – it was one of the highlights of my trip to Iceland! ( Top1) ✨🩵💦🌊🧘🏼‍♀️

This is located about 1 hour drive northwest of Reykjavik. It has 10 pools including a tide pool in the ocean. The scenery is great and you can also get to experience the sauna room. The restaurant and lounge area feel warm and cozy as well. They also offer other activities such as hiking kayaking and yoga on the black sand beach.

This is, by far, the best lagoon/hot springs we have been to in Iceland. The choice and size of each pool were perfect. The different temperatures of each offered a different experience. The scenery was beautiful. You could spend hours just staring off into the distance. So relaxing and quiet. There was plenty of space when we were there, and we never felt crowded. The changing room was great. Private showers and there is a private changing cubicle if needed. You are given a wristband to use for the lockers(just hold it against lock), and this also gets you drinks at the lagoon window, which you then pay for on exit. We can't wait to go back!

The drive to and from the spa was really beautiful and worth the drive. We were lucky to find parking on a busy Saturday. Stunning spa setting, changing area was clean and decent but not really exceptional. Check-in staff was a little short on helpful information and not as friendly as other spas. The pools were a bit crowded (Saturday afternoon). Staff serving drinks were friendly and helpful. Inside dining area had a strong fish smell.

We visited in September 2024 (Late review). Around the time of our trip, the Blue Lagoon was experiencing some volcanic activity, so we were looking for a hot springs option that felt more reliable, less crowded, and more affordable. Hvammsvik Hot Springs was the perfect choice! While it doesn't offer as many extras for purchase (like face masks), we honestly didn’t mind. Since we were driving the entire Ring Road, stopping at Hvammsvik at the end of our journey was ideal. The location was stunning, and the cooler weather paired beautifully with the warm water. We had originally booked a late afternoon slot, but due to a change in plans, we hoped to visit earlier. I emailed a couple of times but didn’t get a response right away, so we decided to take a chance and arrived a few hours early (they ended up emailing me back after we had been checked in). Luckily, the check-in team was lovely and they told us they could accommodate us earlier, just not right away. While we waited, we grabbed a bite in their cozy dining area. The seafood soup was delicious! The locker rooms were spacious and clean, with a public changing area and 1 private changing closet, showers stocked with amazing shampoo, conditioner, and body wash, plus hair tools available for use. We started in the large Lounge Pool to adjust to the water temperature and enjoy our complimentary drinks. I don't remember the name, but the sparkly lemonade was so refreshing and light! The pools are spread out over stone and paver paths, so we definitely recommend using the water shoes provided or bringing your own sandals. Some of the hotter pools (though none were extremely hot) are on the smaller side and can get crowded at times. One of the coolest parts was watching one of the pools become completely submerged as the tide came in — such a unique experience! There were also a couple of amazing ladies leading ocean plunges who brought so much energy and made it a highlight of our visit. Highly recommend!

So beautiful! We went at 6 pm on a Saturday so it was moderately busy but that didn’t affect the experience too much, the views are absolutely gorgeous and you can easily spend 2 hours just soaking everything in. Showers were great and provided shampoo, soap, and conditioner. Would recommend bringing your own towel as rentals are around 11 USD.
