Our Readers' Favorite Islands in the World of 2023

"Hvar and the Dalmatian Islands in Croatia offer travelers a unique Mediterranean experience. Hvar, known as the "Queen of the Dalmatian Islands," has lavender fields, vineyards, and magnificently clear waters. Visitors can explore the charming old town of Hvar, which has picturesque squares, historic buildings, and a medieval fortress offering panoramic views of the harbor and the Adriatic Sea. Hvar's vibrant nightlife scene is also a draw, with trendy beach clubs and bars energizing the evenings." - Travel + Leisure Editors

The Most Beautiful Islands in Croatia, from Hvar to Vis

"Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, and Sophia Loren, along with foreign politicians and royalty, were the glamorous guests entertained by Yugoslav President Tito on the islands of Veliki Brijuni, his private summer retreat from 1945 to 1980. Veliki Brijun is the largest of 14 pine-scented islets within Brijuni National Park and its beautifully maintained parkland reveals Roman archaeological remains. It’s also home to a number of animals such as elephants, llamas, zebras, and ostriches (given to Tito as gifts by visiting dignitaries from South America, Africa and Asia), as well as deer and peacocks. There are golf buggies for rent, but it’s small enough to do some exploring on foot and a 3-star hotel offers overnight accommodation. Insider's tip: If you're on Veliki Brijun in July, catch an after-dark open-air performance at Ulysses Theatre." - Jane Foster

"Cycling on Hvar Island I recently had the pleasure of partaking in a cycling tour on the Croatian islands of Brac and Hvar. The tour, which was sponsored by VBT Bicycling and Walking Vacations, was a great way to see the Croatian countryside as I was able to take in the sights and make stops when as I saw fit. Pictured here is one of my fellow tour members riding on Route 1 in central Hvar. The trip was challenging but as an active person I felt that this type of travel is something I would like to do more of. Colin Roohan traveled to Croatia courtesy of Croatian National Tourist Board , Istria Tourist Board , Split Dalmatia County Tourist Board , VBT Bicycling and Walking Vacations and Delta Air Lines . His highlights are part of AFAR’s partnership with The United States Tour Operators Association (USTOA) , whose members provide travelers with unparalleled access, insider knowledge, peace-of-mind, value and freedom to enjoy destinations across the entire globe. See more about Colin’s trip at the USTOA blog"

We visited Hvar as part of a day trip from Split. It's a beautiful Croatian Island in the Adriatic sea off the Dalmatian coast. It's a picture perfect place with blue water, historic streets, monuments and mountain in the background and very popular among tourists. It's so beautiful, a few hours is not enough to enjoy the place. Hvar is also popular for lavender cultivation, which can be seen on the mountains. There are several restaurants, cafe along the coast and one should not miss the lavender ice cream.

Hvar's hidden gem! Climbing to the castle was breathtaking, with stunning views. Delicious local cuisine, charming streets, and warm hospitality. Must-visit attractions: Fortica Fortress, Hvar Cathedral, and scenic waterfront promenade. Don't miss sunset views from the castle! Perfect blend of history, nature, and relaxation. Highly recommend

For 12 years (whenever we travel through the Balkans), we have been visiting Hvar. And every time, we visit Budimir Huljic’s stall. We talk about life, climate change, crops, lavender, olives, wine, time... We buy from him the best produce and preserves from the unique special microclimate of Hvar. Lavender, rosemary, sage, and immortelle oils. Figs, olives, capers, olive oil... We take away the sun and the aroma... And kind words.

Beautiful place to visit. We were there in May when it wasn't too busy. Walking around the streets and alleyways just off the port area is very rewarding. The fort overlooking the town is well worth the taxi ride up (or walk of you're feeling fit!)

Highly reccomend for 3 nights / 4 days. I highly recommend you do NOT waste your money going to Carpe Diem beach club. It's the biggest rip off on the island Try all the difference beaches and water spots. Rent a car or buggy for a few hours ( only go early morning or evening it's too do ) Rent a speedboat or go for a boat cruise

Really a nice and beautiful place to go! Check the ferry options and schedules before deciding: they’re three companies available- prices differs depending on the time.transfer takes around 1 hour. The city has a mixed of historical places, nice restaurants/bar and beach clubs. Also some awesome landscapes if you move a little far from downtown and walk to peaceful beaches nearby.

I think, the island of Hvar is the sunniest and the hottest place of the whole Adriatic. We took with us 1.5 liters of water per person, but this is clearly not enough, fortunately, wonderful lemonade is sold everywhere and if you find small cafes, you can get an excellent drink 2 glasses for the price of one. There's an old castel on the hill and we were brave enough to get there in the hot midday, for the sake of view. Interesting facts: we were told that the first public theater in Croatia was opened here; Ivan Vucetich, the inventor of fingerprinting, was born and spent part of his life on the island of Hvar.
