"Hverfjall Volcano Up near Lake Myvatn looms this immense black volcano. To stand near it is to be humbled, yet again, by the majesty of Iceland 's pure and raw nature. The crater is approximately 1 km in diameter and it's estimated to be around 2,800-2,900 years old. The last time it exploded was 2005."

I think it was my favorite crater and the most photogenic. It is important to arrive early because then buses full of people start arriving. Parking costs 7 euros You can walk around the crater.

Amazing experience. It’s a unique experience to walk on a 2500 year old crater. The views are amazing and you feel as if you are walking on a different planet. The start is quite steep so take your time if you are not used to this, but the loop is easy enough. There are toilets available and you have to pay for parking. From the parking to the top, a loop and back down is roughly 4.35km

This is a tuff ring crater near Lake Myvatn that makes for a nice place to visit while sightseeing the natural attractions in the area. It is around 1000 metres in diameter and 90-150 metres in height that was formed during eruptions around 2500 years ago. You'll find a fair-sized carpark (1000kr per vehicle). at the carpark there are free toilet facilities as well as host of trails exploring the area, including one that ascends directly to the rim where you can walk around the around the crater, viewing its interior as well as the remarkable surrounding landscape, much of which is littered with dramatic lava flows as well as Lake Myvatn to the west. We really enjoyed the walk around the rim at Hverfjall and would have much enjoyed having more time to explore some of the longer trails in the area around the crater.

Need to pay for parking. Quite the hike up to the top, about 15 minutes and around an hour to walk around the whole crater. Got my steps in from just this

It was an awesome experience to walk all the way to the top of Hverfell. Hverfall was formed 2500 years ago during a large phreatic eruption. The view from the crater is amazing. Something I have not witnessed anywhere else yet. On the top you feel like you are in a remote planet. The hike to the top is easy with a gentle climb on a well made path starting at the car park. There are toilets at the car park.

Gorgeous, even in winter. The trail was very easy (we had crampons). It took us about 10 minutes to walk to the top and we had beautiful views as reward

Once in a lifetime bucket list experience. We had the most incredible views on a sunny day

Great hike to do if you're in the Myvatn Area; if you're doing this anytime after early/mid October, you WILL need crampons (up until about May I'd imagine?) If you want to see the experience, check out my Youtube video (10 min giving you the experience/views of the rim crater hike), titled: "Coolest Crater in Iceland | Hiking Hverfjall Crater in Mývatn (A Ring Road Must!)" We did this early October, and did not need crampons with a small amount of snowfall the night before. Anytime after, I'd imagine it'd get pretty slippery. Takes about 15 min to do the climb up and then 1-1.5h to do the crater hike. We paid for parking (there's a sign), but I saw someone mention on google there's no cameras so you don't need to? We thought better $8 than $80! Not challenging at hard, just the initial ascent is a steady climb. Loved this hike on the ring road. In early October, we ran into maybe 20 groups total the 1.5h there. Summers are probably crowded. Recommend sunblock and bug repellent in the summers to combat midge flies - did you know Myvatn means midge flies?! Hiking shoes definitely recommended. Combine it with 3-4 things nearby (Dimmuborgir lava fields, Hofdi, Grotagja Cave, etc).
