"Hverfjall Volcano Up near Lake Myvatn looms this immense black volcano. To stand near it is to be humbled, yet again, by the majesty of Iceland 's pure and raw nature. The crater is approximately 1 km in diameter and it's estimated to be around 2,800-2,900 years old. The last time it exploded was 2005."

Gorgeous, even in winter. The trail was very easy (we had crampons). It took us about 10 minutes to walk to the top and we had beautiful views as reward

Great hike to do if you're in the Myvatn Area; if you're doing this anytime after early/mid October, you WILL need crampons (up until about May I'd imagine?) If you want to see the experience, check out my Youtube video (10 min giving you the experience/views of the rim crater hike), titled: "Coolest Crater in Iceland | Hiking Hverfjall Crater in Mývatn (A Ring Road Must!)" We did this early October, and did not need crampons with a small amount of snowfall the night before. Anytime after, I'd imagine it'd get pretty slippery. Takes about 15 min to do the climb up and then 1-1.5h to do the crater hike. We paid for parking (there's a sign), but I saw someone mention on google there's no cameras so you don't need to? We thought better $8 than $80! Not challenging at hard, just the initial ascent is a steady climb. Loved this hike on the ring road. In early October, we ran into maybe 20 groups total the 1.5h there. Summers are probably crowded. Recommend sunblock and bug repellent in the summers to combat midge flies - did you know Myvatn means midge flies?! Hiking shoes definitely recommended. Combine it with 3-4 things nearby (Dimmuborgir lava fields, Hofdi, Grotagja Cave, etc).

Car park and summit easy to access even in deep winter after heavy snow. The walk is gentle and no cramp ons are necessary. The view from the top is incredible. Do the full loop!

Sept.24 We paid parking ISK1000 and went up the volcano Hverfjall @8AM with stunning blue sky, but with an icy blowing wind. You needed to watch your steps! We did 2/3 around the crater head and went down the stairs to find the path to Dimmuborgir.

After a short climb to the edge of the volcano, you have a breathtaking (because the wind blows so strongly) view of the crater and the surrounding area.

Incredible spot! One of my favorites in Iceland… quick (10 mins or less) but steep hike up with a super cool view.

Beautiful volcano. There is no cost for parking! Don't let the parking signs deceive you; parking fee is entirely optional, with the exception of the €2 for the toilet. Donating is welcome as it helps keep the volcano crater accessible to everyone. (I didn't for the reasons that will be discussed later). If you have a normal car like I had then I would advise you to drive carefully because the road leading to this location is not paved and is extremely bumpy, filled with puddles, ice and has LOTS of potholes . Additionally, I would strongly advise putting metal spikes on your footwear because the 40-degree hike up to the crater during WINTER is quite dangerous. I had to walk like a penguin most of the time because it was WINDY and the ice was slippery. Highly recommend using the right hand rocky side of the trail to walk up and down the crater as it makes the hike more manageable. Fun fact: the darker the ice, the more slippery it is. 12/03/2024

Very cool looking. Path is obvious but it was very windy and slightly dangerous when we went. It seems like you are supposed to pay for parking and the bathroom, but it didn't seem like anyone was paying yet. Only took 20mins to get up and down.
