Hverir

Absolutely worth the stop. Hverir feels like I’ve stepped onto another planet, with its smoking, sulfur-soaked alien wasteland filled with boiling mud pots, snarling steam vents, and bizarre mineral colors streaked across the ground. The rotten-egg sulfur smell is brutal at first, but it’s exactly what makes the place feel raw, wild, and unforgettable. The twisted land formations look like they were ripped straight out of a sci-fi movie, especially against the distant mountains on the horizon. You can stick to the wooden walkways, or push farther onto the hot, squishy terrain if you’re brave enough; just don’t attempt it without sturdy closed-toe shoes. Our kids thought it was both disgusting and amazing at the same time; they loved watching the mud bubble and steam roar out of the earth (even while pinching their noses the whole time). We lucked out with a quiet visit, which made the whole scene feel even more eerie and dramatic without crowds ruining the vibe. Parking is run through EasyPark. You can pay via their app or at the onsite machine. There are toilets available too, but be prepared to pay to use them.

Super cool place where you can feel the magic of the underworld. Smells like hell of course but if you avoid having your mouth open it's actually really good. You don't have to stand in the middle of the smoke either, that's hard. But incredibly beautiful area with mountains and simmering clay pots, the colors that are different from other areas make it absolutely worth staying. Parking costs money but that's the case in most other places too.

Very cool geothermal spot with bubbling pools of mud and steam. Must pay for parking. Large parking lot. Can walk off the boardwalks to get close to the mud pots. Definitely worth a stop. We spent about one hour here.

Even though it was raining heavily and quite foggy during my visit, Hverir was still an incredibly beautiful and surreal experience. The area is filled with bubbling mud craters and simmering clay pots that make you feel like you have stepped onto another planet. The vibrant colors of the soil and the surrounding mountains are unlike anything else in Iceland, which makes the stop absolutely worth it even in bad weather. Just keep in mind that you do have to pay for parking, and the fog can limit the normally vast views, but the geothermal activity itself is still super cool to witness up close.

Wow! We came over the small mountain and saw the steam and thermal area. We had to stop! The parking lot is large and can accommodate all vehicle sizes. You do have to pay for parking - they scan your license plate and charge you based on vehicle size. A small vehicle was 1300 idk. Definitely worth it. The area is large and you can walk on the surface (marked) and platforms to see the various thermal pools, vents, and gases. We spent about an hour there. It was awesome. It reminded me of some areas in Yellowstone National Park. You can also do the 2.5 Km hike up to the viewing area. The hike up was very steep and it was wet from rain, so we only went part way up. I would recommend stopping.

Extremely expensive parking fee of 1400isk and is not equipped with free toilets. These are only available to you at an extra cost. The sulphur fields do look cool but beware of the smell and of small children if windy. Could be an accident if the location is windy as the barriers are not very secure. Worth checking out if you're okay with spending so much just on parking. We went on cause we saw lots of cars stopped but maybe would have skipped it if we knew parking would be so expensive.

Super interesting and unique area with a symphony of colors and textures to treat the eye. In exchange, your nose will suffer from the steamy sulfur fumes. Experience mental gymnastics while trying to comprehend this alien environment that is nothing like anything you have ever seen before. Fascinating plant textures also dot the surrounding area. Note: Cameras scan your license plate as you enter the parking lot, so be prepared to pay for parking.

If you ever try to imagine what Hell might look or smell like, go to Hverir. You will get a good sense of that, for sure. This place is easily noticeable from afar, with its colorful mountain slopes, the smoke coming out of the ground and the load of tourists in the area. The parking is paid, as usual. The restrooms at the parking lot don't work and have an Out of Order sign which seems to have been there for some time now. When you step out of your car and start walking towards the area, you'll need some time to get used to the heavy smell of sulfur and other earthy goodies. The walking paths are surrounded by boiling holes full of hot grey mud. Make sure you don't step outside of the paths, or you risk getting burned or even sink. At least that's what all the signs warn you about - it's your responsibility to keep yourself out of danger. These colors are as much frightening as they are beautiful. A mixture of yellow, green, brown, greyish and bluish. Everything looks like coming out of a painting of an impressionist. A very memorable sight, indeed. Still, the sense of being close to Hell never leaves you. And this is the impression this place left on me.
