Yelp
Okay, I want to be clear, my husband and I LOVE HyVee as a grocery store. Everyone is so friendly and nice. They're healthy food selection is so abundant, and overall, they have a lot of variety of great brands. They also always give my son a cookie from the bakery, which is so sweet.
However, I want to talk specifically about the cake bakery. I ordered my son's first birthday smash cake from here, because I trusted HyVee to make it really cute and yummy. I just wanted it decorated pretty for my son's winter/Christmas themed party. After discussing, the baker herself showed me the picture of the cake in the picture (the one that I clearly screenshot from Pinterest) and asked if I liked it. I told her I would love a boy version of it, and she said she could do it, so I said great. The next picture is what I got....now I'm honestly not picky, but I could've baked a sugar cookie and cake, dumped fondant all over it, and drew a "1" on the cookie if I wanted that. I even told the baker that I wasn't a fan of tons of fondant, and I wanted very thin, minimal fondant. Her response was "oh yeah, I don't like it either." Yet she dumped a super thick layer of it on. My son couldn't even hardly get through to the actual cake, we had to take a knife to it. It was very sloppily done, and I wanted to cry when I picked it up. However, the woman I spoke with wasn't there, and there was no reason to be hateful to the woman that was just handing the cake over to me. I also ordered 30 cupcakes for the adults, frosted with white frosting, with glitter and lots of little pearls on top. The baker, again, was the one who suggested the pearls, and she didn't even put them on. I don't even think that putting pearls on cupcakes is hard, she just didn't do it. If she couldn't do the cake, if it was too hard or something, I don't know why she would've specifically asked me if I liked it, and told me she could do it. I'm really not one to complain, I try to always be kind to those who deal with the public, but I feel like if I'm paying for something, quality matters. On top of all of this, my parents and I all immediately said "this cake does not taste good, it tastes old, and like pure sugar." Overall, I'm just telling people, don't order your kids' birthday cakes here. I had such high hopes for this cake and was so sad about what I got.
