Background: I am in Montreal for 8 nights. I am here for a very full conference at UQÀM, with activities from morning to 21h00 or 22h00 every day. I travelled by car and have lots of "stuff" with me.

Check-in around 15h00. There were people ahead of me and, soon after, people waiting behind me. There were three people behind the desk. Only one of them was actually working. The other two were simply "observing". When it was finally my turn, the clerk did not know whether to collect a credit card from me. She went to find someone to ask. She was gone for much too long for such a simple question. During that time people would come up to the desk to ask questions, but the two observers behind the desk could only respond that they were "in training" and therefore could not help.
Finally, the process ended and I went to the elevators. I pushed the button and waited. Nothing happened. The elevators did not open. Eventually, a guest arrived and pointed out that the button I pushed was not the correct one. I was supposed to have pushed a button next to a door that in no way looked like the correct button to push. Getting in the elevator, I pushed the button to my floor. Nothing happened. The guest then showed me how to hold my key card against a small piece of colored glass found below the room buttons. I had to wait until the colored lights turned green (not an instantaneous process) and then select the floor. All of this was too much for a "higher class" hotel.
Arriving in my room, I attempted to connect to the internet. No luck. I was repeatedly asked for an access code. I called the front desk and I was informed that there was a problem with internet access, that it was being reset, and that it should be back on in a few minutes. LOL! Those few minutes turned into hours...!
The weather was extremely hot during my first few days in Montreal. The room was a bit warm. I attempted to adjust the temperature using the control on the wall. I set it to 19 degrees. The room never dipped below 23. To be fair, I was able to get the room down to 22, later in the week, once the weather cooled.
Not a great first day at the Hyatt.

I read that it is the policy of Hyatt to check rooms every day. I was gone for most of the day. The room was made up, but they left no washcloths. Why? This is a very minor issue, but it irked me because it simply added to my already poor impression of the hotel.

Another busy day. Because of the heat, I had showered a couple of times on Saturday. Including my Sunday morning shower, I ended up leaving all of my towels on the floor for replacement. Guess what? The room was never made up!! I returned late on Sunday to find no clean towels and my big pile still on the bathroom floor. Damn!! What am I paying for?

About 6h00 I was awakened by what sounded like someone dragging furniture across the room above me. This was followed by things being dropped on the floor and eventually drilling and pounding. Yep! The floor above me was under construction! What a treat! It is 6:00 AM for crying out loud! Knowing that a guest was to be here for eight nights, the management of this hotel chose to put me in a room directly below a room under construction. Thank you.
After a long morning of walking, I returned to my room around 13h00. The room had been made up - thank goodness! But... there was no soap. They had even taken the soap away from the sink and the shower without replacing them! I could not understand this. At this point, I feel like I am part of some sort of psychological experiment. None of this makes sense.

Up again at 6:00. This morning, I talk to the front desk about what is happening on the 29th floor. Sure enough, there is construction taking place on the 29th and 30th floors. The clerk apologizes and offers me two free drinks at the bar. I told her that I did not want anything other than to understand what my options were. She insisted that I take the drink coupons. I felt insulted. She then told me that she did not have any open rooms ,but that if I came back in the afternoon she might be able to find me a room on a lower floor. She clarified that I might still be able to hear the construction through the vents even if I moved to a lower floor. How sweet!
Much more to tell... but Yelp is cutting me off. Stay tuned....
