I've been following Hygge on Instagram and I've become very intrigued with this "Hygge" concept. I stopped by Hygge this week and what a cozy, delightful shop! Hygge (pronounced Hue-Gah) is a Danish word referring to "cozy and comfortable surroundings that invoke an inner sense of contentment or well-being". Well, this shop represents the meaning to a T. Located in a historical building on Broughton, off the beaten path, it's right next to Spa Bliss and across the street from Cha Bella. It was a little tricky to find as my GPS led me to Broughton Street, which is their address. I actually walked into the office of Hagerty Jet Group to ask where Hygge was and it turned out that it was in the same building and there was a door connecting the two businesses. After speaking to Cristina, the shop owner, the official entrance to the shop is actually on Broad. Look for Hygge's white wooden sign in front of the open iron gate. Street parking can be found on Broughton.

When you walk past the sign and the open, iron gate, you will walk into Hygge's little garden before you get to the door of the shop. It is such an adorable space! Lots of lush plants and flowers with a cute, teal bicycle with a little basket, parked there and a white bench in front of a Little Free Library box (non profit org). Cristina really thought this through, because that's exactly how I felt. I thought to myself that I could sit there and read a book! Once inside, the decor is minimalistic with earth tones. It's absolutely a stunning space! There are high ceilings with wood beams laid across. There is a lot of natural wood, white, beige and green from the plants. The scent, oh the scent. It just smelled SO GOOD in there! The music was so soothing and just looking around at the merchandise for sale, all my senses were tickled with joy and warmth! I felt like I walked into someone's home. There is even a little cart by the entrance with a carafe of water and other refreshments with these yummy shortbread cookies which I thought was such a nice, personal touch and a sweet gesture. You don't get that much in retail stores anymore.

Cristina, the shop owner, is just as charming as her shop and you can tell she lives and breathes Hygge. She's soft spoken, yet full of excitement and even her voice is so calming! She shared her passion for ethical and sustainable goods that she has thoughtfully and carefully picked for the mind, body and home. It's quite an inspirational story!
- The Shop -
The items for sale are beautifully displayed on either shelves or hung on the wall. There was lots to see, but it wasn't overwhelming or cluttered. I saw clothing, little metal animal companions which were so CUTE that you can hang on plants (refer to pic), baby clothes, motivational quote signs, pottery, books and jewelry. Just a little bit of everything! Most of the items are locally made and I spotted some candles from Salt and Shore, reusable stainless steel straws with pouches from Hali Hali Design and artwork by The Small Creative to name a few! They also hold workshops regularly of all different topics like meditation and water coloring.
Stop on by. It's such a unique shop full of one-of-a-kind products that your mind, body or home will appreciate. If not for you, for someone you love. You'll feel good about your purchase too as all these items are very well made that will last you a long time or better for the environment!
