Evan Funke Explores Sicily's Foodways

"A vineyard and wine-tasting spot on the slopes of Etna where visitors can sip local wines with panoramic views of Mount Etna and the nearby sea; the setting reinforces the island’s terroir-driven wine culture and offers a sensory connection to the landscape that informs local produce and cooking." - Khushbu Shah

We visited today the winery as a group of 8 adults and 4 kids. The setting was truly lovely, the garden was beautiful, the winery equipment and facilities were impressive, and the wines themselves were tasty. We opted for a tasting of 5 different wines, but unfortunately, the amount poured per glass was extremely minimal — the smallest we’ve encountered across all our winery visits. The five wine bottles looked as full at the end as they did at the start. We were honestly tempted to ask if we could help lighten the load! Alongside the wine, we were served a small plate with slices of bread and olive oil. While tasty, the portions were also on the stingy side. When the kids asked for some more bread, we were told there was none left, which was disappointing. Overall, while the place has charm and the wines are good, we left feeling a bit short-changed. We’d recommend checking out other wineries in the area that are a bit more generous.

Visiting I Vigneri di Salvo Foti & Figli was a quiet standout. The wines are elegant and expressive, with a clear sense of place. Everything reflects a deep respect for the land and tradition. No frills, just honest winemaking at a very high level. If you care about Etna wines, this is a place worth seeking out.

The most wonderful experience here learning about the wine and tasting! They take extra care to uphold traditions here, and it’s clear in the quality of the wine!

Amazing wines that tell stories of how the family of Foti have been producing wines over generations in the most traditional ways, going back to the roots, reexporting and implementing new technics. When you taste their wines you can feel the sunrise in the vineyards, breeze coming from the sea, big sister Etna keeping an eye on the grapes, scent and taste of unique volcanic soils, sweat of the people harvesting the grapes and making the wines. You just have to take a sip and the journey begins! We had a wonderful experience visiting the winery, hosted by Simone Foti, son of the winemaker, it was a pure pleasure to listen to him explaining all the aspects of the area, their vineyards and winemaking techniques in a traditional way in Palmento. The spot where the winery is located is just magnificent! You get the view of the sea and Etna at the same time. I have visited a number of wineries all over Europe and I Vigneri di Salvo Foti was definitely one of my favourites of all time! Highly recommend to wine professionals and wine lovers, who enjoy beautiful wines and are curious to explore and learn more!

Great visit to Salvo's sanctuary mid/late May 2021. The vineyard was absolutely beautiful. Very grateful for Salvo's hospitality. It's evident he takes great pride and responsibility in caring for the ecosystem. Beautiful cellar. Enjoyed a tasting while Etna loomed in the background. Was certain to purchase a few bottles to enjoy back in Palermo—all great for summer and super versatile with food.

This was such a special winery and wine tasting. Simone is so kind and thorough. We learned about the vines, the history and culture and it’s incredible to see the product of a family operation that deeply cares how wines are produced in Etna. We tried a variety of wines and they were all excellent.

Must visit if you are in Etna! Salvo has an infectious passion for winemaking and took us on a tour of his winery. The wines are made in an old style and the property is beautiful. He was so generous with us and we can't wait to visit again!
