10 Best Tours in Amsterdam | Condé Nast Traveler

"This is really best for those with a vested interest, as the one-on-one attention is brilliant for making swift progress, and if you opt for a longer tour (they run from three to six hours, with four a recommended minimum) you’ll really be able to get off the beaten track. Your safari group might range from total amateurs getting to grips with the basics of composition to pros with pricy DSLRs looking for the inside scoop on the best places to shoot in the city. You can bring a friend with an iPhone or other handheld camera device for around 90 percent less than the regular tour price, so it might end up feeling like a private tour (those are available too, and are strongly recommended for people with mobility issues). Night safaris, beginning a couple of hours before sunset, are absurdly picturesque, as the lights start to come on over the city’s bridges, casting fairytale reflections over the canals (even amateurs will soon be capturing boats’ light trails with tips on the best long exposure settings)." - Clodagh Kinsella

We had a lovely stay in ibis Amsterdam centre. Was a bit worried with all the reviews but I couldn’t fault it. Rooms were always cleaned for the three days and towels were given each day ( some reviews said this was not the case). Rooms were small but for three days it didn’t bother us! However during check in the card didn’t work but that was resolved very quickly.

Stayed here for four nights last week. The staff could not have been more helpful! Being centrally located means that catching trains, trams and boats are all only a few metres away, so exploring the city is really easy. I would definitely stay here again.

In terms of price-quality it can’t get much worse than Ibis Amsterdam Centre. ||Let’s start with the positive: the hotel is located right next to Amsterdam’s main transport hub Centraal Station. It’s just a short 20-minute train ride from the airport and you can walk right into the city center. ||One would expect at least some basic sound-proofing given that the building is situated right next to 10+ train tracks, however to my surprise sound-proofing is completely non-existent at this property. ||This means non-stop noise of trains and passenger announcements. If they assigned you a a room at the back of the building, get some professional earplugs and prepare for a short night of sleep. ||For the rest the experience was also underwhelming: our 17m2 twin room had 3 pillows, wrinkled bed sheets like they had been used before (I’m pretty sure they were new, but just talking about the appearance), no mini-bar and an ironing board in the hallway. ||This is not what I expected when I booked an 280-euro per night “Standard Room”. ||I believe hotels are selling a sleeping experience, not just a room with a bed. It was disappointing to see that Ibis doesn’t give guests prior notice of the noise levels they can expect. It would be the ethical thing to do. I will make sure to avoid this hotel chain in the future. ||I don't complain quickly, but this time I feel I should warn other travelers.

Google
Perfect location, loved the vibe of the reception and room, as always with ibis, never disappoints. Could have made 5 stars but Breakfast could have had more fruit options, and clients taking their luggage in and out of the storage area with no supervision is a huge risk in my opinion - someone can just walk out with anyone’s bags the number of bags is not monitored, no tags…yikes!

Google
The best feature about this hotel is it's location. It is just next to Amsterdamcentrasl, and also very near to tram station that brings you to various attraction spots, including the museums. The room itself is very small, with very basic amenities. Do keep in mind, you can ask for kettle if you need one, but it is not provided as part of the amenities in the room. It is quite clean, so no complaint there.

Google
Location is excellent for walking everywhere easily. Check in was very smooth with a complimentary upgrade, which was a lovely surprise! The room was located on 8th floor which was quiet (could barely notice the trains) and was very clean. Lobby and bar/cafe really nice atmosphere. Staff were extremely helpful. I think this hotel has everything you need. Thank you so much to this hotel and we will recommend you to clients and friends!

Google
Cozy room is small but it has enough to offer. Just a pity no toilet brush in the bathroom. 24/7 reception is a big plus just as the location, central and either walk or transport distance to many things. Breakfast was okay, missed the bacon to match the scrambled eggs and sausages with beans but I managed it ;-) Would stay again.

Google
Had a great stay at Ibis Amsterdam Centre! The location is super convenient right next to the station and easy to get around. The staff was really friendly and everything went smoothly. Only thing is the room was a bit small, but it was clean and had everything I needed, so it didn’t bother me much. Overall, a really good experience!

Yelp
Having never stayed at an Ibis facility before decided to try them out while Visiting Amsterdam with my family for three days. First the customer service was top notch! Check in was easy and want to thank Christian for his excellent hospitality. The rooms didn't have a refrigerator and the front desk staff offer to store my mother's medicine in their refrigerator. The rooms were a little on the smaller side compared to other hotels I've stayed at in Amsterdam but comfortable, clean, and had all the basic necessities. The breakfast was a little chaotic as you are left to fend for yourself after checking in. So finding a spot to eat and / utensils was a little tricky. The offerings were basic for a hotel at this range with an assortment of breads, cheeses, meats, and hot food. The bar was great the first days with knowledgeable bartender. However on Saturday the female team was a little lost on their offerings. For example offering me an on the rocks glass with ice for my bottled beer. Overall I found this to be a great experience! Yes some missteps but for this caliper of hotel not to be unexpected. The standard rooms are smaller so if you are accustomed to having space you may want to try a different hotel. Hotel it is a great value for money to a clean safe place to sleep right next to train station.

Yelp
The hotel's location is adjacent to the Amsterdam Centraal train station and only a 15-minute walk to the center of Amsterdam (Dam plaza); these were among the major reasons I booked it. It is about a 30-35 minute walk to the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, and about a 20-minut walk to the Anne Frank House. There are plenty of restaurants in the area. Despite the proximity to the trains, the hotel was quiet. The included daily buffet breakfast was good. And the overall price seemed better than a lot of other area hotels. The area felt fairly safe. You should stay vigilant for things like pickpockets near the rail station, but there was never a 'dangerous' vibe in the area. Amsterdam in general and the area around the hotel in particular is very walkable. Your biggest risk is getting run over by a bicycle. The rooms may be better in a (standard) 2-single bed configuration. We got a 3-single configuration and there was almost no floor space. We made do with pushing open suitcases under the beds when we did not need to access them. The bathroom was not large either. There was almost no shelf space in either room. We did have a view across the water to the film museum. WiFi: Using my laptop, WiFi was fine. However, on any Apple device, it was hit-or-miss. It would sometimes not connect, or if connected would drop after 5 - 10 minutes. The staff recommended restarting the device but that seemed to only temporarily fix this sometimes. Luggage storage: We arrived before our room was ready (no issue there). The hotel also had a free luggage storage room. It is accessed via a loaned key-card, which you use to access an upper floor and then use again to open the luggage room door itself. This seemed reasonably secure and when we stored the bags (around 10:30 a.m.) there was plenty of space. I just put the bags on a middle shelf at the far end from the door. However, when we returned (around 1:30 p.m.), we found the door to the luggage room was ajar. This was puzzling until we opened it - there were so many bags that it couldn't close! It took me a few minutes to remove enough luggage into the hallway to allow some sort of entry into the room. From there I managed to extract our bags. I then tried to put the other bags back into something resembling their original positions. The room is not climate controlled, so I worked up a good sweat with all the lifting in there. In retrospect, maybe this was a good thing, in terms of added security. If anyone *had* wanted to steal bags, they certainly wouldn't have gone to all the trouble to get to mine. As an alternative - the hotel does offer some luggage lockers (for ~ 4 Euros for 8 hours, or something similar) on the ground floor. These have key locks and likely won't be filled with other bags when you return, so it might be worth considering. If I returned to Amsterdam, I might shop around to see what else was available. However, if you don't mind the room size, this is a decent place to stay and certainly has some advantages.

Yelp
I give it a 1 star because it's close to the central train station, but that's about it. The room, a double is so small you can't open your suitcase and get dressed at the same time, unless you want to get dressed in the hallway. The bathroom, so tight calling it small is an overstatement. Thank goodness they don't provide bars of soap, because if you dropped it you'd have to stick your ass out into the room to bend over to pick it up. And lastly, the price was double compared to rooms in the surrounding area. Why did you stay there you ask? After a day of 8 hours in transit we just jumped on the closest place. Please don't make the same mistake we did.

Yelp
I recently stayed here from August 19th-22nd 2024 and I really enjoyed my stay. It's located in the perfect location conveniently next to train station where you come in from the airport. The place is clean and the staff are helpful and pleasant. I will definitely stay here again!

Yelp
We had a great stay at the Ibis. Our room always comfortable and quiet + the restaurant/ bar downstairs was excellent.

Yelp
Pros: Location - steps from the train, metro, and the center of the city Quiet - we never heard our neighbors. Hope they didn't hear us. ;-) A view - we were on the 9th floor overlooking the water Complimentary water bottles every day Windows open and AC worked well Good service - clean room, fresh towels, bed made up daily. Cons: You have to take two different elevators to get to many of the rooms Breakfast didn't look like it was worth the price (we didn't eat there) Coffee maker had calcium deposits on it - needed a good scrub. We would definitely go back.

Yelp
Your standard middle of the road budget hotel chain in Europe. I honestly did not know the name "Ibis" until I started researching hotels in many western European countries while planning a trip. While not luxurious, they serve their purpose. This particular hotel is absolutely perfect for those getting off the train from Schipol airport as it is located next to the train station. While many may fear the sound of trains all night, that is not the case here, as the windows are pretty thick and block the sound very well. The lobby is quite nice, hip, spacious, and very inviting, but beware of large crowds as it seems to be a meeting point for many tours and hotel guests. As for the room, expect small, but all the amenities you need. Very clean and tidy, but again, crawling over the bed to move, and the entertainment is very limited, so be aware of that. I will say the shower was quite nice though even though it was dated. As for price, expect under 100 euros even during peek tour dates with excellent access to public transit. Ultimately I leave it at a 3/5 star rating as it is quite dated, but gets the job done. I would definitely stay here again if on a tight budget while in Amsterdam.

Yelp
Quite a good hotel. Little messy when checking in, it was a festival weekend in Amsterdam so there were a lot of people. Some rooms could be a bit noisy with the windows open, but when closed it won't bother you. Perfect location near Central Station. We were on the 9th floor in room 978, which was the furthest room; 2 elevators and 2 hallways to walk through. But a lil extra exercise is never a problem for me!

Yelp
The rooms are no better than a Travelodge. It was over €200 a night ( this is about $240 ), taking advantage of the New Year's weekend. Some of the buttons on the phone didn't work. Here in Amsterdam they charge or I got charged for the 4 nights like a €32 hotel tax. That's not the hotel's fault but I sure won't come back to Amsterdam or the Netherlands ever again. Breakfast is about €13 if you buy the meal at the front desk otherwise if you go to the breakfast room the price is €17; an unremarkable buffet breakfast and quite highly inflated price. They do sell refreshments close to the check-in counter and a litre bottle of water cost €6! I am thoroughly disgusted with his hotel. It's even amazing that they include Wi-Fi.. They do offer a premium Wi-Fi as well for a fee. I wish I had never heard of it and had never taken a New Year's holiday in this country which smells of marijuana on the street.

Yelp
Do not stay at this hotel. Not clean and I was bitten by bed bugs. See pictures. After 3 nights I was being bitten in my left side and thought it was mosquito bites. Every morning I would wake up and the bites would continue. After really getting annoyed, I searched the bed and after pulling up the sheets I noticed a filthy covering over the mattress(see pics) and saw bugs moving around. The mattress cover was filthy and looks like it had. It been washed in a very long time! I changed rooms and they gave me one night for free(big deal). The bathroom was also not too clean. The shower didn't drain properly and there was mold on the walls of the shower. I suggest you don't stay at this hotel! Horrible BED BUGS BED BUGS BED BUGS. RUINED MY TIME IN AMSTERDAM!

Yelp
I'm having a hard time finding anything good about this hotel. The rooms are very small with no amenities at all. The room had two hangers in it and two towels. The towels were hard, rough and see-through. The hand soap dispenser was completely empty, the bathroom smelled like urine all the time because every time you flush the toilet the stench would come out. If I had to give this hotel one word to describe it it would be a DUMP. although the people at the front desk were very nice and helpful but that's about it as far as a positive opinion. There are many nice hotels in the area if you're willing to pay a little bit more. Take my advice pay a little bit more and then go somewhere different. This place is very depressing

Yelp
Great hotel in the heart of Amsterdam. This one is close to the train station and within walking distance to numerous shops, restaurants, bars and attractions. As others have said, buses/trolleys make their way back to the train station so if you want to venture out further it's easy to do. This hotel chain offers the basics at a budget friendly price. The room is smallish, but who goes to Amsterdam to hang out in a hotel room? The bed is super comfortable, there is a small desk and sitting area. The bathroom was big enough - the shower actually roomy for the size of the bathroom. A blow dryer is available for your use in the bathroom. There was a small TV at the foot of the bed and free Wi-Fi. Breakfast was offered in a spot off the lobby, but is not included in the price of the room. We felt quite safe walking in this area even late at night. Although we were directly above the train station, the rooms were not noisy. In the morning we could hear just a hint of the brakes whining as the trains came into the station, but it was so faint it did not disturb us in the least. If you are looking for a clean, comfortable, budget friendly place to stay in Amsterdam, look no further. The Hotel Ibis fits the bill perfectly!

Yelp
Stayed here in April, definitely some pros and cons to this place. Pros: located right next to Amsterdam Centraal train station so not a far walk from where the airport train arrives/departs. Friendly, helpful staff. Price didn't make you feel like you'd been robbed. Despite location next to train station, was surprisingly quiet. Has an elevator. Cons: baffling check in scenario with no discernible line. Sort of have to wait around and keep your head on a swivel to catch somebody who can help you. Place books up so make reservations way ahead of time. Rooms small like the rest of Europe. Did not eat breakfast here as there are many places for that nearby. All in all I would stay here again.

Yelp
I was very impressed with this hotel. Location It could not have been more conveniently located. It's a 2.60 EUR and three stop trip from Schipol to Amsterdam Centraal, and the Ibis is just 3 minutes walk to your right as you leave the station. Every tram in Amsterdam goes back to Amsterdam Centraal and I suspect every bus does too. It is extremely easy to get to! It is on the canal, in a bike park that holds 35,000 bikes on a good day and right by the station, yet it is not dirty or seedy. There are no weirdos hanging out or winos to trip over! Rooms The rooms are pretty small, but very very functional. the bed was generously sized for a double and very comfortable, as were the pillows. There is a desk and small open wardrobe and shelves. It comes with a telly that was in the perfect position for watching in bed. The room has blackout curtains and highly controllable AC. The bathrooms are pretty tiny, but the showers managed to be quite spacious. They provide one goo that does for body, face and hair wash. The towels are not huge and fluffy, but they worked fine. Everything was spotlessly clean and my towels were changed daily. We had rooms overlooking the train station, and you can hear the trains rumbling past. It is possible to get rooms on the other side (they are the odd numbers) if you ask at reception when you check in. I actually loved the deep comforting sound (it's only very faint) and there weren't many at all during the night. Breakfast The breakfast is buffet style and unlimited, so can easily provide for lunch too! They have cereal, toast, bacon, sausages, scrambled eggs, croissants, cheese and ham. As well as yoghurt, boiled eggs and fruit. The coffee comes out of a machine - top tip, get a black filter coffee and fill it up with milk from the cereal bar as the milk in the machine was not my cup of tea. The breakfast room was clean, large and really well set out to have some privacy. It wasn't a huge swarm of tables and chairs. I liked that. They serve from 4am-noon, so plenty of choice on the time you eat! Service Every person we spoke to was engaging, helpful and very friendly. They really seem to be the most cheerful lot I have ever come across! This even applied when I was teaching the poor long suffering bartender how to make a pot of tea "Brit style"! Value for Money It cost us around 90 EUR a night for bed and breakfast per room. I thought that for what we got, it was well worth it. Oh, and it has free Wifi!

Yelp
A quick place to rest your head w/o big expectations: Stayed here since I had a 12-hour layover in AMS. The train from the airport takes you straight into Amsterdam Centraal, which the hotel is a short walk away. Great for exploring the nearby areas, but if you're staying in Amsterdam, even the hotels across the way are better for a bit more money. The hotel is not for hanging out in, it's basically just for quick stays. It's not quiet, there are trains below you pulling in to the depot. The view of the river is more industrial than romantic. Don't expect anything extra and you'll be just fine.

Yelp
I booked this hotel for one night on my way back after a cruise to Norway. After seeing the room and taking into account several other considerations, I checked out at 7pm and booked another hotel. The positives: -The staff at this hotel were very nice and provided excellent service. -The proximity to interesting stuff to do is pretty good. The negatives: -This place is under construction, so everything is torn up. Consequently, the check in process is very confusing. Additionally they hold luggage in repurposed hotel rooms, with very little security. When you pick up your luggage, they give you a key card to the luggage area and let you go there yourself. Anyone could easily take whatever they want. -The air conditioning in my room was blowing for hours, but made no difference in the ambient temperature. -The bed was absolutely horrible. I had a full size bed, and it was literally two cots pushed together with bedrolls on them, compete with two sets of bedding and a seam down the center. -The room was tiny, smaller even than the room I had on the cruise ship. -I had a no smoking room, but it smelled of cigarette smoke. Overall, I can't recommend this place.

Dale C.

Yelp
My family and I reserved 5 rooms at this location beginning of July. The rooms were extremely small for European standard. The staff's demeanor at this location made our check in process extremely unsatisfactory. The rooms are really small and the ongoing train noise day and night made it extremely difficult to get a good nights rest. Do yourself a favor and reserve a hotel elsewhere!
google avatar

Marc M.

Yelp
Hotel is clean, in a great location and has a friendly staff. They were very helpful with pre-trip communications. The rooms are very small. No room to unpack. The AC is ok, it won't get very cold. The city lights make it impossible to black the room out at night. The trains are so close that you will hear one rumbling through every few minutes - a simple fan app helped us drown out the noise. We had read the reviews and were prepped for the noise, lights and small quarters. Do for us, the pros outweighed the cons. I think if we had gone in blindly, then we would have been pretty frustrated.

Yelp
Great Hotel , cheap prices ,Nice Staff, Good Rooms / Beds. Lovely View Toilet is small but you dont need bigger. very nice Breakfast :) its right beside Central station very cool , you dont hear the Trains very sound proof. i would love to stay there again.

Yelp
Do people really like this hotel ok it's very central and clean. My charging plugs didn't work and it was so Loud from the train for almost 200$ a night its a total ripoff Also when I checked out the guy was so rude to me he was like you didn't pay sales tax so we waited 30 minutes as he called his manager and finally realized he was wrong It's crazy how confident he was of himself even after he was wrong
google avatar

Yelp
Room very clean nice view from 451 looking over central station never bothered with breakfast but beds very comfortable we will defo be back here. Central to everywhere you need. We love Amsterdam sadly that's all I can say about the accommodation as we were to busy out and about exploring and only used for sleeping in. Would definitely come back. P.s we ain't ones to pick at a place anyway it's Amsterdam we came to see. The accommodation and the central location was fab 30-12-15

Yelp
I have stayed here multiple times over the years and love it! If you're coming in from another country or late at night there's no better place to stay. Very short walk from Centraal station makes it both practical and economic, especially for short stays. Staff is very helpful and friendly and their "lobby" bar looks great since the renovation. One other interesting thing you'll experience while staying here is literally being able to see half the bikes in Amsterdam parked outside the hotel for those taking the train! Wouldn't even think to stay in any other hotel while visiting Amsterdam.

Yelp
Stayed here Aug 2015: The best things about the Ibis Amsterdam Centre for my friend and I was the close proximity to everything we wanted to do as tourist, and our clean and more modern hotel room. We stayed in room 586 at the end of the hall. It had a view of the train tracks, and the noisy rail systems could be drowned out by keeping the windows closed. However, starting from least annoying to most annoying are the following: 1. No tea kettle or coffee maker, or iron in the rooms at this Ibis. You have to borrow these items from the front desk. No refrigerators are supplied at all. 2. The cleaning staff does not do a good job with making your bed. They pretty much just cover up your bed with the duvet haphazardly, and don't change sheets or pillowcases unless you specifically ask. 3. The wi-fi was abysmal in room 586. If you could connect it was slow, and it would drop constantly. 4. The cleaning service leaves their cleaning bins out in the open right next to our room when they are done for the day, and then noisily collect them at around 8a:m every morning. A noisy eye-sore to say the least. 5. The room this Ibis uses to hold your suitcases (should your room not be ready when you arrive) is insufficiently monitored. They allow travellers to self-check their suitcases in and out of the room. They have a man posted about 8 metres from the room who keeps an eye on the entry and exit, however he cannot see every angle of the room. They have a visible camera in the room at a viewing angle that I strategically placed my luggage near (more on this in a minute). The fourth point leads me tell of my experience with the luggage room. The lock on my suitcase was missing when I took it out. I had made sure my bag was locked with the combination lock before I left the luggage room. The bag had only been in the room for about 45 minutes. My friend's suitcase was fine. Panicked, I took the luggage upstairs to our room and took everything out. Thankfully, nothing was missing. However, I still had a missing lock, and realized that perhaps there was a thief somewhere around. When I spoke to the manager on duty "Sacha" she said she would review the camera footage and get back to me, but she would not be able to release any information about any persons, or details of what happened. Sacha did not follow up with me directly. I had to then speak to another manager "Geoffrey" later in the day. He said that Sacha had not seen anything on the camera footage, because the camera was "out of view" (remember I had put my luggage within view of the camera on purpose). Geoffrey was quite condescending. He dwelled on the fact that nothing was missing, and "why would a thief take a lock off and not continue"? The answer to that is perhaps he/she didn't have time. How would I know? Geoffrey was quite unconcerned with the implications of what had happened, and didn't make a convincing argument that the camera was even working, otherwise how could my luggage be "out of view"? When I asked for reimbursement for my lock if I went and bought another one, he flat out refused. I contacted the Accor customer service via social media and by email, and after some initial back forth, I haven't heard back from them regarding their own inquiry into the incident. I wouldn't stay here again, and I don't recommend this hotel when staying in Amsterdam. Room Tip: Do not choose room 586. As a matter of fact, just stay at the Doubletree Hilton.

Yelp
I really, really enjoyed my stay at this hotel. It's moderately priced for such an amazing location (right next to the central train station and every tram comes back to that area), the staff was ridiculously friendly and helpful, and the little restaurant/bar adjacent to the hotel was great! I got a ham and cheese sandwich there and, honestly, it was one of the best things I've ever had. The rooms were small, but perfectly functional, so it didn't bother me. Everything was very clean and lovely. I'd definitely recommend this hotel to anyone who asked.

Yelp
Great location, helpful staff, clean rooms! Best location for city visit. Walking distance to everything, including train station.

Yelp
I discovered this place when I had to book last minute and all the hotels were full. Rooms are small, which is not unusual. But the place was surprisingly clean, cozy and quite. The staff was great. And you can't beat the location. You can walk anywhere easily. Although my company pays for the room, it was a good price. It's kind of hip. Wireless worked flawlessly. I'd gladly stay again.

Yelp
Anna L. really said it all in her 4 star review! I would simply copy/paste it but I might get sued for copyright. Would stay here again !! No free breakfast so we ate out of the hotel and there were some nice places nearby. -4 Stars and recommended.

Yelp
I've stayed here a few times and it's my go to hotel whenever I visit. Conveniently located by Central Station with plenty to do and see in the area. Nothing grand but it is neat and always serves the purpose. Rooms are typically smaller like most European hotels. I would definitely stay here again.

Yelp
What an amazingly unassuming hotel. Recently, I had a 1 day layover in Amsterdam before crossing the pond and returning to North America. Therefore, I was looking for a discount hotel, and I stumbled across this. What can I say, for the price of 69€, this place was incredible. To start with, the variety of restaurants (Italian,French as well as an American burger joint and the Red Baron Bar) was great and more than I had expected. The room was clean and very quiet with a nice view of the blue skies of Amsterdam. Amongst other things, the internet was high speed, and I had no problems watching videos on youtube or skyping with friends and family. Last but not least, there was an airport shuttle which is quite easy to find with a schedule to and from the airport every day. All in all, if I have to stay in the area again anytime soon, I will go here without a second thought since it is everything I expect in a hotel, let alone an airport hotel, and for a great price!

Yelp
Good hotel in the heart of it all. Close to Central train station. Street car at your door step. No parking though. Front desk told me to park underneath The Hilton. Then I wish I stayed @ Hilton. Bathroom and rooms are tiny,
