"Shinzaburo Ichizawa’s family has been making durable canvas bags since 1905. Today, Ichizawa sells a colourful array of bags and heavy-duty aprons. The company’s employees cut, stamp, sew and assemble every canvas item by hand, some still using 80-year-old Singer sewing machines in the process. “We have the skills to repair or remake any of our bags from decades ago because we still use the same old methods,” says Ichizawa. These last for years and only get better with age."

I bought a watch strap and was really impressed with the quality of the strap, the service and the price. The strap is soft but very hard wearing, and the buckle is certainly unique. In the shop they adjusted the length for only ¥500 and it fits perfectly, a NATO style strap without the need to loop back the excess length. The strap cost ¥4500 and they sell other colours which I will almost certainly buy next time I’m in Kyoto. The shop also sells a large selection of bags that are high quality and of various sizes for different purposes.

I have passed this shop by accident and was amazed by the quality and the big variaty of designs so I had to go in. Ryota, a young, super friendly and very skilled assistant helped me finding the right bags. In the end I bought three of them! As this is their only shop you HAVE to go there! Amazing quality and designs!

You'll find canvas duck bags that last a lifetime. Gorgeous bags of all kinds, shoulder, tote, backpack, folio (lawyer), in many colours, that speak to Japanese craft of a high order. The older the bags get the better they look, the epitome of wabi sabi. Presently they have a series of turquoise coloured bags to commemorate their 120th anniversary. You're not just buying a bag, you're buying a heritage.

We were deeply disappointed by our recent experience at Ichizawa Shinzaburo Hanpu. On our first visit, my children quietly sat at the side of the staircase while my wife and I shopped. They were not obstructing anyone, and no one raised any concerns. However, when we returned this year, the situation was handled very differently. Despite behaving the same way—sitting quietly and out of the way—the owner personally asked them to stand up. This unnecessary intervention upset our son and cut our visit short, as he repeatedly asked us to leave afterward. It made continuing our shopping impossible. We chose instead to visit the owner’s brother’s shop, 㐂一泽 (Ki-Ichizawa), where they thoughtfully provide a couple of seats and a small garden space for customers and families. That simple consideration made a world of difference. Last time, we purchased Bag 311 and several pen pouches from Ichizawa, and my wife bought three handbags. Despite its larger space compared to Ki-Ichizawa, Ichizawa has made no effort to accommodate customers with basic seating. The fact that it was the owner himself who asked our children to stand makes this all the more disappointing. We will not be returning to this store and cannot recommend it to families. Thoughtfulness and customer care matter—and unfortunately, we didn’t find either here.

Staff is very friendly and second floor has a tax-free counter. They have lots of canvas bags of various sizes for different purposes, a little to the pricey side but it's worth it for great quality if you appreciate their craftsmanship!

Design and quality of bags are not as good as 15yrs before. It’s now selling the brand more than the pride of quality. Took a bag that I bought >10 year ago for slight repair job but they went straight to quote me some kind of money that’s almost the same of buying another similar (but not as nice) bag. I recall the brand was proud of that their bag is able to be working for the life time given necessary maintenance and a bit of repair jobs after a while. Does not look to be the case now a day. Do not recommend to buy bags here as there’s a lot of choices around in Japan with fair prices.
