The 20 Best Things to Do in Bogotá, Colombia (Updated 2025)
"I visited the Iglesia de San Francisco and was impressed that it's the oldest surviving church in Bogotá (built in the 16th century) with an incredibly ornate interior and a beautiful 17th-century altar; it's still in use, so I made sure to dress respectfully while there." - Matthew Kepnes
The oldest Church in Bogota. It's inside are so grand but outside is stark opposite. But don't miss it. It has special value in local history and bond with people.

It's mind-blowing to think that this place was build in the 1500s!!
The grandiosity of the altar, which is gold-plated, and pretty much all the interior except for the pews is truly staggering.
Taking pictures is not allowed, so you'll have to be discreet if you want to snap any. Most importantly, remember it's still a church, not a museum, so be mindful of the people praying inside.

The outside needs to be restored, on the inside there is an amazing neoclassic style altar from the 16th century, this church is almost always closed, check times before visiting, I was there on a weekday at 5 pm.

This is one of the most beautiful churches I've ever been in. Anytime I have friends visiting, I always bring them there and everyone just thinks it's absolutely stunning.

I'm an American traditional Catholic. Going to a Novus Ordo always makes me a little nervous because I'm not sure what to expect. I found this liturgy very reverent and beautiful, and I appreciate that kneeling to receive Holy Communion seemed to be common practice. The only surprise was a delightful one, which was that after mass the faithful came up to the communion rail to be showered in holy water by a Franciscan friar with his aspergillum. It was awesome. Afterward, most lingered to pray in their pews or around the various magnificent side altars, and I was also grateful for the opportunity to prayerfully wander around and admire the beauty of it all. I felt very much at home in this church and would look forward to the opportunity to come again

It is a beautiful place. It is the only place in the world that has 3 Catholic churches in a single block. The churches were built in the 15th and 16th century. The architectural or architectural value is invaluable to the city. Sito recommended for followers of history and art.

As one of the previous comments mention: There is more gold than in the Gold Museum. It's not allowed to make pictures. I'd loved to take some. I walked with a wide open mouth. Very impressive artifacts. And it's free entrance.
