This church is one of the finest examples of Asturian Pre-Romanesque architecture, built in the early 9th century by King Alfonso II el Casto. It is a unique structure influenced by Byzantine, Late Roman, and Visigothic styles. The church is characterized by its thick stone and brick walls, small windows, and a simple yet solid construction. One of its most remarkable features is the original 9th-century frescoes, which are among the oldest surviving Christian frescoes in Spain. The name Santullano is derived from Saint Julian and his wife Saint Basilisa, to whom the church is dedicated.
