There are two profound visual and sensory experiences that I will always associate with my visit to St Mary's, Lagos. Firstly its façade - though plain - made glorious by the vibrant, violet blossom of the jacaranda trees that frame the approach to the church. Secondly, within its darkened interior, the extraordinary impact of a crucifix, illuminated within an alcove above the high altar. Painted behind this life-sized representation of Our Crucified Lord is a group of winged angels, basking within beams of pink, purple and orange light that cascade around the curvature of the recess. It is an optical experience that one of my travelling companions described as "trippy"!
On Saturday 23 September 2023, I was privileged to attend the vigil mass here, which was a wonderful experience. Worship music was led by a young male organist, accompanied by a choir of about six ladies, soprano and alto. A young lady with a beautiful voice acted as cantor, and the mass was celebrated by the parish priest, Fr Nelson Rodrigues, who, judging by the smiling faces seen all around the church during the course of his animated address, is clearly well beloved of his flock!
