Beautiful historic church with stunning architecture, ornate interiors, and a serene riverside setting. Don’t miss the Kings’ Balcony and the impressive pipe organ inside!

When we got there it was still open at 530pm. We were super happy because it was quiet and we can stay to admire without a crowd. The beauty inside was quite impressive. Very detailed and well preserved. The courtyard with the arched ceiling was like something out of game of throne. Def worth visiting if you are in Amarante.

Ig: @oursceneos The Church and Monastery of São Gonçalo in Amarante, Portugal, is a historic gem that enchants visitors with its blend of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture. Located along the beautiful Tâmega River, the site dates back to the 16th century and is dedicated to São Gonçalo, the town’s patron saint and a beloved figure known for his miracles. The church’s stunning facade, intricate stone carvings, and peaceful cloisters invite visitors to explore and discover a sense of history and spirituality. A visit here provides both a journey through time and an unforgettable experience in Amarante's cultural heart.

Beautifully maintained and paying 2 Euro is worth the climb to the tower. Don't go when the hour strikes as the four Bella are loud

An impressive manueline (baroque) 16th century church dedicated to Saint Gonçalo (1187-1259) a Dominican friar who played an important role in the development of Amarante. The city’s picturesque bridge over the Taméga River is attributed to the saint’s efforts.
