20 Best Restaurants in Edinburgh | Condé Nast Traveler

"Edinburgh’s leading purveyors of the very finest of cheeses since 1993, I.J Mellis showcases high-quality farmhouse fromage from the U.K., Europe and beyond, including tempting two-day curd cow’s milk cheese from Aberdeenshire and washed rind cheese from County Cork, Ireland. At the Victoria Street shop, you’ll find yourself not only amidst some of the world’s finest cheese but also surrounded by a whole street of independent shops selling everything from Harry Potter memorabilia to whiskeys and local gins—plenty for your pantry. The curved street, with its old-fashioned cobblestones and pastel-colored buildings, is one of the most photographed in the city. This is a lovely, traditional and warm shop and far more than a mere cheesemonger, and as such, it deserves a little of your time. (If you can, it's also worth scoping out the cozy Stockbridge location, where there's space in the back to indulge in a hot drink, and a toasted cheese sandwich of epic proportions.)" - Caroline Eden

10 Best Places for Shopping in Edinburgh | Condé Nast Traveler

"I.J. Mellis has been independently run for 25 years, opening this location in May 1993. The expansion speaks to the popularity of its star product: cheese. There's plenty of it to be found here, with shelves largely carrying Scottish, and other British, varieties. The Westray Wife, for example, is a washed rind cheese from the Orkney islands that tastes faintly of a hay meadow. You'll also find Spanish quince paste, little jars of pâté and rillette, wine, and crispbreads. Feeling decadent? There's also a wonderful selection of fine butters. Splash out on a full-on gourmet picnic; come with an empty basket and leave with a full one, selecting cheese and wine, as well as nibbles like charcuterie and crispbreads. Then, take your spoils to Bruntsfield Links, just a 15-minute walk away." - Krystin Arneson

We stopped in and were greeted by such friendly staff members! He let us sample some amazing Brie and showed us some gluten free snacks. We missed our chance to get a scotch egg here, but they looked so delicious.

We were delighted to discover Mellis Shop, which offers a fantastic selection of Scottish cheeses and other gourmet treats. The staff were incredibly welcoming, and the shop itself has a charming, inviting atmosphere. We wished there was even more local Scottish produce available. We were very impressed by their vacuum-sealing option—perfect for keeping cheese fresh while traveling.

Went in to try some cheeses and buy some before our travels back. Mia was very knowledgeable and incredibly helpful! She was very welcoming and nice, and we had a lovely experience trying the Scottish cheese platter and selecting cheeses to take back home. They can also vacuum seal them so they last through the trip!

A little cheese shop on beautiful Victoria Street with a great selection of cheeses. The girl working there was super friendly and helpful when I asked for Scottish cheese recommendations. What a hidden gem in Edinburgh!

As a French, I naturally wanted to try out some Scottish and British cheeses and I certainly wasn't disappointed : the Brie, Blue and Cheddar I bought there were all fabulous. On top of that, the people there were very welcoming and warm, and deeply passionate about cheese.
