Beautiful and definitely worth doing — but you have to accept that you’ll be doing it alongside more than a thousand other tourists. Most people start the hike around 2 AM, so it gets crowded, and there’s often a traffic jam on the way down to the blue fire. Still, it’s quite an experience — a bit dangerous, but the sunrise and the mysterious blue flames make it all worthwhile.

My visit to Mount Ijen was an unforgettable experience. The trail was quite crowded, especially during the time I went — it was clearly a very touristy period, and honestly, there were a bit too many people. That took away from the peaceful vibe I was hoping for. Because of the crowd, I chose not to go down to see the famous blue flames. It felt unsafe — people were pushing to get down, and it didn’t seem worth the risk. Still, the view from the top was absolutely stunning. The bright blue crater lake was breathtaking, even from above. The sunrise was partially hidden by fog, but it actually gave the whole scene a mysterious, magical feel. We were lucky with the wind direction too — we barely needed our gas masks, as the sulfur fumes weren’t too strong that morning. If you’re planning to go, definitely bring a flashlight, sunglasses, and good hiking shoes. Despite the crowd, it’s one of those rare places that truly lives up to the hype — a must-see at least once in your life.

An unforgettable experience. Although I missed the best timing to see the blue fire—since I was in a beginner group—the breathtaking view of the lake made up for it. The stunning scenery and immersive nature quickly eased any disappointment. I highly recommend wearing proper gear: sturdy hiking shoes, a trekking pole, a good quality mask (due to sulfur gas), and a reliable headlamp, as it’s dark during most of the hike. Avoid carrying a heavy bag—there are many small stalls along the route where you can buy foods and drinks. Make sure to bring enough cash. For those who aren’t used to long hikes or are not in peak physical condition, you can rent a "taxi" (a trolley pulled by local guides) to go uphill for around IDR 1,000k. If you also use it for the downhill journey, the total cost can go up to IDR 1,700k, depending on your weight and the distance. The gate opens at 2 AM, so you only have around 2 hours to reach the blue fire before daylight fades it. The trek is quite long and steep—you’ll first hike up to the peak and then descend to the lake where the blue flame appears. Be extra cautious during the descent, as the path is rocky and slippery. It requires focus and balance, especially in the dark. Overall, it's a challenging but incredible adventure—well worth the effort if you're prepared!

A unique experience to see blue fire coming out of the ground. Overall a good experience but very crowded as there are many tourists with some taking long time for photos and video. I would suggest if possible hike up as soon as you can to avoid the crowds. Do remember, if you are late and the sun is up (5.30am), then you will not be able to see the blue fire. Headlamp is a must and hiking stick will provide you with additional support and make your hike easier. There are cart services to carry people up and down but will cost about 1.5m rupiah for return trip. If you come with a travel agent then gas mask are usually provided. Using warm cloth with zipper is advisable as it is cold before you start but as soon as you start hiking, you will feel very warm.

Absolutely Incredible – Felt Like Another Planet! Visiting Ijen was one of the most surreal experiences of my life. The famous blue flames—visible in only two places on Earth—were absolutely mesmerizing. Watching them dance in the darkness truly felt like stepping onto another planet. Then, as the sun began to rise, the entire crater transformed, revealing a stunning turquoise lake surrounded by dramatic landscapes. The hike itself, though challenging, is 100% worth it. The views and atmosphere make every step worthwhile. Plus, for those who need a little help, there are locals offering rides in small buggies (like makeshift carts)—a unique touch I’ve never seen on any other hike. One important tip: don’t arrive too early! The gates only open at 2 AM, so plan your timing accordingly to avoid waiting around in the cold. A must-do if you’re in Java—you won’t regret it!

Some information for those planning to visit: - In my opinion you can skip the overcrowded circus to see the blue flame in the night. You can go early in the morning and you will have the whole mountain for yourself. Safer and way more enjoyable. - Going up or down is steep. I wouldn't recommend it if it rains. - You NEED a health certificate otherwise they won't let you in. Just Google "Klinik" and go there to get one. Around 25k, in 5 minutes you are done. - If you don't want to use the toilets at the entrance, there are some toilets as you go up. - You need a mask only if you go down to see the blue flame. Otherwise it's not needed. - I wouldn't recommend buying sulfur. It's highly unlikely that you will be able to carry it with you in the plane if you only have a cabin bag because it's flammable / hazardous. - Without the crowds, in daylight it took me about an hour to go up. I am definitely not an athlete, just a normal person.

Beautiful sunrise at the top, but I didn't enjoy it that much because of the big crowd. There was no chance to see the blue fire phenomenon due to the long line going down.

Hiked up to Kawah Ijen and wow.. the view is absolutely stunning. The hike takes around 2–3 hours depending on your pace. If you want to catch the famous blue fire, make sure you arrive before 5 am, it starts fading after that. The trail is always quite crowded, but the experience is worth it. Bring a flashlight, a sunglasses, and good shoes. One of those places that actually lives up to the hype.
