Imagine staying in a room glowing with warm ochres and reds on the walls and tall French doors that open onto a balcony overlooking a street vibrating with life. Gauzy curtains gently blowing in and out are oddly soothing to watch. This is the Bed & Breakfast " Il Girasole" located in a l7th century building in Cagliari, the capitol of Sardinia. You couldn't be in a better location for exploring this exotic and fascinating pre-Roman city where once fierce pirates and Phoenician sailors roamed. Il Girasole is in the Marina District near the port, but within easy and pleasant walking distance to everything you would want to see. The real jewel of Il Girasole, however, is its owner Luca Mura. Not only is he happy to share his knowledge of Sardinia with you - it's history and traditions - but he can also tell you what time the bus leaves for the beach and where best to catch it, what sites to see and which ones to skip, what the weather will be that day, where to buy a hairdryer, or what is the best time to visit the San Benedetto Fish Market. His breakfasts are delicious and made with fresh, local products. There will always be some traditional Sardinian dish to try that has been made by either Luca or his wife Stephannia. Like airy chocolate cakes, focaccia hot out of the oven, or warm croissants waiting to be filled with one of his homemade jams using fruit from his family's farm. Local cheeses, salamis, or even puffy pan-fried pastries called "Sebadas" which are filled with a delicious sweet cheese and grated lemon peel will be on your breakfast table as well. In all my 60 years of travelling I have never met a more generous or helpful host. Unasked, Luca picked us up at the airport when we arrived from Milan. On another day, he drove us to a little known, at least to outsiders, site from which we could see all of Cagliari, from sea to sea. At Il Girasole you will find comfort, warmth, generosity, delicious breakfasts and the perfect location from which to explore the southern portion of Sardinia. (And, did I mention that Il Girasole is very reasonably priced as well?)
