Stanley meets Mattia Santori at this food market in Bologna's historic city center, to discuss the Sardines, Santori's grassroots political movement that opposes Matteo Salvini and the growing right-wing populist party in Italy. "Sardines" come from the Italian expression "to be packed like sardines", which the movement embodied in a large 20,000 rally in Bologna's city square to oppose Salvini.

We have tried to walk through this old market on Saturday morning, but it was impossible as the lanes are so narrow, and people were pushing from all directions that we have taken the first turning out from there. There were a lot of walking tours and groups which for a small place like that you don't enjoy the experience. I have walked through early the next morning just to see what it was all about, but it was just like any other small lane in the area.

This collection of small, packed-to-the-rafters shops lining narrow laneways off Piazza Maggiore is my favourite Italian food market and my first stop on every visit to Bologna. An aperitivo on a bar stool at La Baita, outside Vecchia Malga delicatessen, is a delicious way to people watch.

A bit noisy with no definite reason, shops are varied. In general, it felt a bit rundown versus other similar areas in other mayor cities

This is the central quarter in Bologna. Restaurants, cafes and whatever you want. I was surprised that it was difficult to find magnet or any other souvenirs for bringing home. There many people there and the architecture was beautiful. The city is definitely brown considering the bricks they use for their buildings. It is nice to walk down these streets.

Normally I give high marks to food markets but yikes, this one is so expensive, can't let it go. Busy, tight, shops, lots of selection, but all in small displays, and yes, super expensive. Better than shopping at Conad but only if you have excess euros to toss around. Right off main tourist area, so easy and pleasant walk, away from heat but no escape from crowds here.

I don't think that we found the right place, so we weren't so amazing of what we saw :(
