Il Santo Bevitore – Bar Review | Condé Nast Traveler

"Give us your first impression. Located off the beaten path on a canal in Cannaregio, this old haunt would make a great set for a Venetian parody of “Cheers.” A cast of devoted regulars fill the old bar stools while travelers who often stumble in without planning mingle amid kitschy and nostalgic decor. So who’s there? Regulars frequent the bar for the community and televised sports, while visitors come for the craft beer and uniquely gritty ambiance. Attire is come-as-you-are. How are the drinks? More than 20 Italian and Belgian craft beers are on tap as well as a few rotating guest beers. They have also perfected the gin and tonic, using their own gin label and garnishes like star anise. What's on offer for food? The bar bites are simple, pub-style fare including grilled cheese with local bread, salami, dried meats, and hand-baked potato chips. How did you find the staff? The staff here is a balance of friendly and no-nonsense: they’re happy to chat it up with patrons, but if you make a ridiculous request, you may end up on their bad side. What's the bottom line? The perfect spot when you need a break from the central Venice tourist scene and overpriced bars." - Jenna Scatena

Google
Fantastic pub in a beautiful, quieter area of Venice. Service was excellent; bartender provided information on the beers and suggested some of his favorites. They have a large selection of Italian and European drafts, plus liquor and snacks. Excellent outdoor seating area beside a canal.

Google
Are you joking, seriously, I've been to many good boozers but how is it an Italian bar in Venice tops the list. 24 pumps, a fridge, full complement of spirits, cicchetti, low level blues, beautiful view, not too busy (when I'm here at least) it's perfect. And I don't say this lightly, perfect.

Google
Honestly, I wasn't expecting a craft beer bar in Venice but was very happy to find out there is actually one. Il Santo Bevitore offers good selection, the best selection of beers in Venice, the atmosphere is of a typical pub and the service is very friendly. We got really drunk there 🤗

Google
One of the best craft beer bars I’ve found in Italy! They had a variety of different styles, a lot of local options, and a very knowledgeable staff that would help you choose. The pub is right on the canal, so there’s a nice terrace to sit and enjoy beer for hours! Will definitely be back here next time I’m in Venice.

Google
Great craft beer place. You can try everything first and decide for the one you like. The staff speaks perfect English and is happy to recommend and explain everything. The little snacks weren't the best, but that's okay.

Google
I’m a big fan of craft beer. I think this is the only craft pub in Venice. Excellent selection. Take you choice of 20 taps and a good selection of bottles. Plus limited but tasty selection of cicchetti.

Google
Fantastic little bar with awesome range of craft beers. Great location and friendly, knowledgeable staff. Best bar in Venice for great beer!

Google
We were looking for a brewery style place to just hang out before dinner and this was perfect. 21 craft beers mostly from Italy. Bartenders were super friendly and it was just a wonderful chill spot with great beer.

Yelp
Best craft beer selection in Venice. Has an actually bar (7-8 seats?) they you can sit at and speak to a nice mix of foreigners and Italians. Resonable prices and Chimay (3 different ones) on draft. Great place for sure.

Yelp
One of the best places I've been to in all of Italy and in Venice too! Great craft beer from around Italy and locally. The ladies who work the bar are friendly and very chill. The vibe is really good. The prices are about what you would pay for craft beer in the USA too and they have a wide portfolio of options from stouts to sour beers. Really happy I found this place! Thanks for being great!

Yelp
My wife and I were on a 10 day tour of Italy through Costco and we found this place on Yelp. What an awesome beer bar! They had lots of IPAs, which are hard to find in Venice. I ordered 2 IPAs and one of their famous tapas. It was like a little tiny sandwich. We sat by the canal and had great service as a reminder that life is amazing and thank whoever you thank that life is amazing. Loved it!

Yelp
The best craft beer selection in Venice in a chill atmosphere. The beertenders are knowledgeable, the beers are all local Italian brews. They have a good selection of stouts, IPAs, farmhouse ales, etc. This place shows that Italian beer isn't just Peroni and Moretti. But... read the back of the shirt before you buy one as it's a bit NSFW.

Yelp
We came across this pub on our way to check out the city of Venice. It's is right outside of a canal passway so you can wave to gondola riders. They have a great selection of beers on tap. It's a dog friendly establishment where we met a dog named Mario who sat atop of a barstool and ordered himself a D'Achouffe. Because of this, I myself ordered the same beer; it did not disappoint. Good and friendly service! "If you are racist, sexist, homophonic or an asshole, you are not welcomed."

Yelp
The pub is next to Palazzo Diedo in the north side of the main city, which is a bit away from the most popular tourist area. When I went there one night at about 8pm, the ambiance was great. There was a very good selection of beer both on tap and apparently in the fridge, and the bartenders were attentive. I only wish there were better cicchetti to go with the drinks.

Yelp
Chill place. Was looking for local craft beer in venice. Not many places. Had a good stout. Friendly service. Had the sepa stout. Tasted good

Yelp
When in Cannaregio, check this place out. Very small and cozy, with one of the best draft beer selections in all of Venice, if not in all the world. Note their hours - opening time is late afternoon, and I've been saddened to pass frequently earlier in the day and not find them open. And you have to love a beer place that can have signage advising "non bere sopra il ponte" - like we needed to be told!

Yelp
So yes, this is definitely the place to go to get great craft beer fro all over Europe. They have an excellent selection form Italy, Belgium and many other areas. Inside it's quite tight with only a few spots at the bar which are constantly harried by folks ordering beer, they do, however, have a nice little patio outside just to one side of the bar. There is no table service. The nice young ladies behind the bar are very knowledgeable and even sort of friendly ( in a European sort of way ) though be careful not to cross them. Our group of 7 made the mistake of taking the initiative and pushing a few of the 12 or so 2 -top tables together to suit the size of our group and wow one of the girls did not like that. She had a near tantrum and insisted we re arrange our tables in different manner which seems far less efficient, but heyOK no problem. In any case the beer is good , the location is solid right next to a side canal though, perhaps my biggest complaint is that you are paying US prices for beer. €6-7 per pint! I a region where beer and wine are usually substantially less that's a bit of a kicker. Just Sayin'

Yelp
When I first walked into Il Santo Bevitore, just the sight of all the taps behind the bar put a huge grin on my face. They apparently pour some of the best beers available anywhere in the World! They have microbrews from the US, plus an incredibly variety of other drafts from six continents. The ambiance is warm and welcoming, and the service is quick and friendly. With all of this going for it, how could anyone rate this place less than five stars? To put it bluntly, I've never seen a worse technique for pouring beer... Here's what they do: First, they set the glass on a counter almost an entire meter below the tap. Then they open the tap and slam it shut once the glass is full; this results in a glass that's 80% foam. Next, they pour more of the same beer into an American pint-sized glass using exactly the same technique. Finally, they stir both the immense heads of foam on the glasses with a foam knife and eventually combine the two glasses. This atrocious technique effectively kills the taste of any beer, whether was brewed by Belgian Monks or hipsters in California; when they're done with it, you'd probably enjoy drinking camel piss a lot more... Tip: If for some reason you simply HAVE to drink a beer in this place, I suggest your go with a bottled beer and pour it yourself.

Yelp
Found this diamond in the rough one canal over from our hotel and it was love at first sight! This place is like a breath of fresh air! After being in Europe for a few weeks you realize that good beer is hard to find. I found this place by yelping "craft beer" in "current location". What a find! A must visit if you love beer! They showcase anywhere from 6-8 guest handles from craft breweries in the region and a couple standard run of the mill Italian brews for the locals (I assume). I had my first beer here and a tear came down. Don't expect any brews to knock your socks off like the full flavor stuff you get in the States but the 6 beers I had were great! I had to stumble back to the room! LOL They sell some tapas-like appetizers for 1 euro a piece so if you begin to feel tipsy just ask for a few of them. I know I did! They have a convenient restroom right outside just in case you need to "break the seal" and down about 3-4 suites, they have a small store so the owner of this place is pretty passionate. Kudos for sourcing great beers in this part of Venice!!

Yelp
It's the best beer in all of Venice, Italy. Very romantic at night, next to the canal and extremely awesome and friendly staff.

Yelp
Cool little beer bar in Venice. Off the beaten path, which was nice to get away from the tourist mobs and folks taking pictures with iPads. They have ~20 taps and what seemed like a similar number of bottles. They did have cantillon bottles for sale.

Yelp
We were literally a couple of doors down and thought this place would be great. NOT! Girl with blue hair was totally judgemental, racists, and profiling. We are Asian and didn't have mask. " you're In Italy and you need to respect the rules" . Guess what ? We forgot it and could have gone to get it. How bout not trying to be a totally condescending and lecture people right off the bat. Caucasian people didn't have it and you were so nice to them and " o ok ". Totally different personality with other skin. Had our own conversation and she was listening in and started confront us about talking about her. Good lord we weren't even talking about her and she started lecturing us and asked to us to leave. Maybe a language barrier... but she did tell us that she spoke five languages. Apparently one of the languages was not customer service. Seriously, we're professionals and do not act stupid...it could have been late and she was tired, but terrible customer service

Yelp
Very casual setting. Not too crazy or hipster. Best beer selection in Venice. Finally some place with amazing dark beer. My wife and I went in one night and then took my two sisters the following night. A fun little pub a little off the beaten path.

Yelp
Best beer selection we have found in Venice! Many beer choices and yummy cicchetti! Good service and cozy pub! So glad we found this place!

Yelp
Large selection of beers (around 10-15 on tap, quite original, at €6-7 a pint, plus many bottled beers). They are especially good with IPAs (at least 3 Italian IPA options available). On top of that, they are sooooo nice here. Waitresses advise you on the best beers to choose, and are very approachable (wait until you have been a tourist in Italy before telling me it is a weird description for a bar owner :) ) And final bonus: they have a totally not packed 6-8 table terrace, with parasols, super nice during the summer!

Yelp
Okay. Found this place for a friend in Italy who loves craft beer. It's a pretty cool spot. Pluses: free wifi, bad ass bitches tending the bar, little crostinis for snacks, and lots of craft beer. They also have whiskey and gin. They have a nice little outdoor seating area and of course the view is lovely--It's Venice. Their liquor selection is very limited and specific. They do sell some soda and tonic but will not make a drink for you. Unsure if it's the principle of the matter or due to licensure or what. So, my suggestion to you is to enjoy the whiskey/scotches on ice. The biggest drawback is this: the toilet. Bathrooms in Italy are pretty hit and miss just in general in regards to casual spots but this one was particularly rough--no seat(pretty typical) but also really low to the ground (not typical and makes it harder) and pretty dirty and also there was either no soap or no paper towels (I can't remember which). Definitely check this place out; it's a unique little find with a huge selection of interesting beers on draft and like I said, the two days we stopped by there were some very cool and beer knowledgeable ladies working the bar.

R. C.

Yelp
Many different kinds of Italian beers on tap and some from other countries. Three different sizes for tap beer (if you want to sample and not commit, although I saw someone get a taste of a beer), no wine. As another reviewer mentioned, staff are very approachable and helpful in making a choice. They have SKY SPORTS on the tv as well.

Yelp
It was nice to find a pub around here with a large selection of beer. Friendly bar tender and excellent tasting cicchetti!

Yelp
If you are a beer nazi like me, you MUST check this place out when in Venice! The selection is the best in the city, the staff is friendly and informative as hell, and they have great cichetti! Awesome prices, awesome beers, awesome experience. Go!

Yelp
I love beers, and if you love beers, this is your spot, the best spot in Venice. It's a bit off of the canal and did not seem touristy at all. Great beers on tap and tons of craft beer. This is a beer lovers paradise in Venice. Just go! You won't be disappointed! Cheers!

Yelp
Lady bartenders were nice. 20 beers on tap! Yummy variety of beers. Chicete looked great. Carne seca is a must!!!!

Stacy T.

Yelp
I am giving this bar a one star, simply because they have a REALLY crappy attitude towards tourists. Frankly, downright unfriendly and rude towards tourists. We came here twice for a beer and both times were met with a attitude. Sorry you have to work in a tourist spot people, show some appreciation for the people who pay your checks!!
