Guide to Italy's Lake Maggiore

"A cozy spot on a quiet side street that became a favorite for those seeking vegan options and homemade pasta; the menu includes wonderful homemade pastas and more upscale main courses of fish, veal, and beef, and it quickly became a go-to choice for the reviewer’s family." - Elizabeth Heath Elizabeth Heath Elizabeth Heath is a writer and editor living on a hill in Umbria, from where she writes about travel in Italy, the rest of Europe, and farther afield. Adore this restaurant, fabulous food, wine and staff. This visit was a little disappointing in terms of service. We were extremely rushed - starters dropped to our table very quickly (almost too quickly!) as we were still eating (not even half way through!) we were told the kitchen wanted to clear a big group order first, before I could say we were happy to wait for our mains (again we were still getting though our starters) they pointed to the fact the mains were already cooked and sitting on the station. I felt rushed to finish my starter so I could have a hot main - I was really annoyed by this as this was a special birthday booking and this is a favourite spot of ours! Again the large group was prioritised and our forks barely touched our plates before dessert was rushed out. Thankfully we were okay to stay a little longer to final our wine. The food is divine (as it was this time - just a little cold!) and normally the atmosphere is homey, relaxed and well paced this time it missed that mark! We do hope to try again as the staff are lovely and you feel like part of the family!

Google
A true Italian experience in the heart of Dublin! It really feels like Italy: the atmosphere, the people, and of course, the food. We shared some antipasti, and I had pasta as a main dish. Totally worth it.

Google
this restaurant is incredible!!!! the service is amazing, they made us feel right at home, provided blankets because we were chilly and treated us like family. the food was wonderful, and the tiramisu was better than any we had in italy!! highly recommend- very affordable, very comfortable, overall incredible.

Google
We were recommended Il Vicoletto by the restaurant opposite as they were fully booked. SO glad they did, great family atmosphere, very attentive and a cosy environment. The food was exceptional, need to call out the Gamberi Rossi picante, well balanced dish or flavour and spice, also their homemade Tiramisu, which was truly spectacular. So if you are in Dublin then make sure this one is on the list!

Google
The appetizers were amazing, and the pasta had a perfect texture, though the portion was a bit small. I highly recommend trying their pistachio tiramisu and wine. Make sure to reserve a table in advance!

Google
Be prepared, it is really a small restaurant and gets very crowded. I guess about 15 tables total. Book your table in advance! Very cozy and homey atmosphere. The service and the food were top notch! I highly recommend melanzane, Sicilian style vegan pasta and from main courses beef fillet and ribeye dishes. The wine selection was very good!

Google
We visited this place that served the best red wine recommended by the staff and delicious food. Although they weren't taking reservations after 9 PM, and we had to wait a bit since it was a Friday evening, the overall experience was worth it. The ambiance was great, and the food was tasty. Highly recommended for a delightful evening out. PS- The cheesecake of the day (mango & passion fruit) is recommended!!!!!!!

Google
This is a proper, classic Italian restaurant. We were very lucky to walk in and get the last two-top: it's small (authentic!) and bustling with enthusiastic diners. We ordered a couple of primi and then each a pasta--i had the special, a burrata ravioli with a delicate tomato sauce (anchovies in the sauce gave it lovely umami, a classic addition to pomodoro). Absolutely delicious! My wife had a venison ravioli with a mushroom cream sauce; savory and amazingly delicious. The by-glass wine options are diverse (well, lots of Italian options!) and we had some nice pairings with the advice of our very accommodating server. Overall: very highly recommended

Yelp
Absolutely a remarkable place just off of the main hustle and bustle of the main road. Service was grand, and the man who took care of our table was a joy to deal with. I regret not complimenting his great black beard lol. The food was some of the best Italian food we have had anywhere, it was simple in its execution but well thought out and developed. The visuals were very nice. In comparison to the hustle and bustle outside, I felt like we had just walked into someones family dining room. Much darker, quieter, and inviting. We will certainly return upon returning to Dublin.

Yelp
I've been coming here for years. 10 years to be exact. I've tried so many Italian restaurants in the area. And I keep coming back to this. It has the genuine Italian taste and atmosphere. Service team remembers me and are very friendly. Everything they have, from appetizers, to pastas, to steak, to dessert! They are all fresh, high quality items and meals. This place gets packed everyday for dinner, so try to call or come early to book in advance if you are coming for dinner. I'm addicted to this place!! Like I said; I tried other places but this one tops them all.

Yelp
While out my friend and I were hoping to grab a meal and while looking up places noticed this restaurant. We walked over and you can see it was busy and a small restaurant but they luckily had availability and got us a table quickly. Once there we were given break, oil, and vinegar as well as water to enjoy as we looked over our menu. The server recommended a great wine my friend never had and we ordered an appetizer and meal. For the appetizer we ordered: Calamari in crosta and it was honestly one of the best if not best calamari I've had in a long time. It was light, crispy and not oily. Also loved that sauce they paired with it! For the main meal I ordered: Tagliatelle ai frurti de maré e bisque di gamigri Rossi. It was delicious and my friend ordered Tagliatelle al Ragu di cervo Irlandese and she said it was incredible and savored every bite. We didn't order dessert, but would absolutely pop back over when in town. The price was extremely reasonable as well! Lastly the restrooms were clean!

Yelp
We were surprised to find IL Vicoletto within 900 ft. of where we stayed in the Temple Bar area. We knew right away that this Italian restaurant was special. It was small but had the old welcoming charm of a local Italian restaurant vibe that you can only find in small towns in Italy. But we were in a busy and loud Temple Bar in Dublin, Ireland. All of the staff were Italian. They were so welcoming even though the place was packed and we didn't have a reservation. They just squeezed a 2-top by the bar which blocked 1/3 of the pathway to the kitchen. This type of arrangement will never pass California's health or ADA inspection. We were just happy to get a table and enjoyed the fresh pasta and seafood that were made perfectly. The sauce was outstanding. The Bruschetta was crazy good. The only thing that was not on point was the calamari. It was on the chewy side. Overall, it was a lucky find but worth the experience. If you are in the Temple area and have a craving for Italian, make sure to book a reservation at IL Vicoletto.

Yelp
This was just ok for me. I ordered a seafood pasta without mussels. I would expect a bit more of the other types of seafood in place of the mussels, but that wasn't the case. The calamari were very fishy and tough. The seabass was almost non existent. Just very tiny flakes of fish. There were 2 bigger shrimp and then some tiny little pinky nail sized shrimp. The actual pasta was good. My wife ordered a cheese ravioli and she said it was ok. We were not offered any parmesan cheese.

Yelp
My daughter and I were visiting Dublin and were hungry for some Ravioli! This restaurant is amazing in every way! The Ravioli did not disappoint! First, the bread, oil, and balsamic vinegar the comes out first is glorious while you wait! It really pairs well with 2 glasses of wine! Because we walked to Temple Bar, we ordered a bottle of wine and enjoyed! We ordered the Ravioli dello Chef-Homemade varioli! So creamy! So rich! So flavorful! There is a warning in the menu that this Chef-Homemade dish leaves room for slight variations. I must say, as delightfully creamy and rich as this dish was, no matter what variation the Chef chooses, it is assured to be perfection! If you are visiting Dublin, these two American Ladies highly recommend this restaurant! Most Sincerely!

Yelp
We called this place around 3pm for a dinner for 8. They told me "Let us check with the owner and call you back." We weren't hopeful. But I got a call back in a few minutes they could make it work. Great service before we even got into the restaurant! When we got there I didn't know how small the restaurant is and the fact they could "make it work" was amazing. The staff were so kind and welcoming. We all got something different and everything was delicious. My Dad got a steak and said it was the best steak he has ever had and he is picky! We got tagliatelle and risotto dishes. But everything was good! Must try in Dublin.

Scott V.

Yelp
Great food from the appetizers to the entrees! Highly recommended! Authentic Italian dishes!
google avatar

Steven O.

Yelp
Very nice ambiance and delicious food. The restaurant was a little cramped but don't let that deter you from the menu. Mainly a wine selection and one beer in a bottle. 9/10 would reccomend and go again. I got the sea bass pasta and app of smoked salmon.

Pash Lee L.

Yelp
Sadly I didn't get any pics of this place or the food, it was way too tight in here and I wasn't comfortable. I literally couldn't wait to get our food, eat and then leave. The service was subpar at first with our first waitstaff but then that one disappeared to other people and we had a new server who was much better, nice, personable with good energy. Our first server seemed a bit indifferent so to be honest I was glad they switched, not sure what his problem was but our new one got a great tip! All though the food was delicious the vibe I was getting wasn't making me feel welcomed enough to go above and beyond here. Most likely will motivate come back here when I'm back in Dublin.

Yelp
We were blessed to find a table for 4 on a Saturday night the day prior to St. Paddy's Day. After a long day of rainy walking, walking into this family restaurant brought such joy. The wait staff are attentive, the ambience is welcoming and the PASTA IS DELICIOUS. For those American travelers this is not an Olive Garden where you get abomination Alfredo. You will get hand made regional pasta and excellent wine and the gelato is a perfect ending to this meal.

Yelp
The most magical last night in Dublin was spent here at IL Vicoletto. We made 8:45 reservations and the rest is history. Our waiter was amazing and made us feel like faMily; recommending an incredibly special white wine that went down so smoothly. The complimentary bread w Olive oil and balsamic is to die for so don't get too full on it. I ordered the lobster tagliatelle that was light and hearty w plenty of lobster to go around. My friend ordered a seafood pasta that she also loved. YOU MUST ORDER THE TIRAMISU! It's phenomenal. Our neighbors became friends by the end of the evening; as conversations and drinks continued to flow. The most magical memories were made here and I will forever hold IL Vicoletto fondly in my heart. Service was incredibly cozy and I highly recommend spending an evening here when in Dublin.

Yelp
I had a taste for something Italian, and stumbled across this place! I was greeted by upbeat customer service, and seated promptly! You can tell that this restaurant is a hit in the evening! The ambiance in the evening is upbeat, yet relaxed at the same time. Lighting is dim, and it feels great! I ordered chicken wings as my appetizer. Whoo lawd! This chicken wings truly hit the spot! They were flavored divinely, crispy yet smooth, and had a nice spice kick! I also loved that a salad came with the chicken wings! This is a great way to keep your body balanced! As my main dish, I ordered the Penne Pollo a la crema. This was a very flavorful and filling dish! The only recommendation I have would be to add more garlic, this would genuinely lift this dish up and add a nice element to it! Afterwards, my belly was full and I made the trek back to my hotel! Cheers to good eats!

Yelp
Best food I have had in a long time, best meal in Dublin! Super cute place, lovely intimate vibe. Amazing pastas and fish and salads and cheeses and desserts! Highly recommend!

Yelp
If I could give this place a 0 star I would. Showed up full of tables and was discriminated on because I was an American tourist. Avoid this place in Dublin they are rude and literally turned away money because I was American. STAY AWAY!! So many better places in Ireland. Just go in Italy. This is the only bad experience I had on this trip. Il Vicoletto learn manners and start acting like your Irish brethren. It was my wife's birthday for goodness sake. Never again. I will tell all my friends and family to stay away. Also the manger who said no should be fired. Thank you And the managers response was " , well Christopher you should ask anyone who might know if they've dropped you on your head when you were born" Then he said and I quote .... "I'd like to put out for you : WHEN YOU'RE DEAD, YOU DON'T KNOW YOU'RE DEAD. THE PAIN IS FELT BY OTHERS. THE SAME THING HAPPENS WHEN YOU'RE STUPID" Check out the google review for yourself. I admit my review was a bit harsh but that is not how you respond to patrons. Anger management anyone? Let's learn some respect please.

Ann M.

Yelp
Best service we've had in Ireland. Think fine dining in a very intimate setting. Very nice wine list. I had the sea bass tagliatelle pasta dish which was good. Everyone in our group was very pleased with their dishes (burrata ravioli, carbonara ravioli, risotto with ragú made with Irish beef). We ordered calamari to start and it might be the best I've ever had.
google avatar

Yelp
We found this place one of the first nights in Dublin and went back our last night. Met the owner and he is as welcoming and fun as the staff. The food was amazing. The carbonara ravioli is my favorite.
google avatar

Yelp
Tiny hole in the wall. Was lucky enough to get a table for 2. Food is amazing. One of the top Italian restaurants I've ever been to. Steak quality was top notch, cooked to perfection.
google avatar

Jerry B.

Yelp
Excellent food. Service with a smile and humor. Great Italian atmosphere. I'd highly recommend this place.

Yo M.

Yelp
Food was the absolute best food I had in Dublin! Sooo good everything was awesome. Service was great they let us in and were able to give us a table. Restaurant is a little hole in the wall, but super cute.
google avatar

Yelp
This is some of the BEST Italian food in the world! The entire staff is from Italy and amazing. The fried calamari is PERFECTION. I have been known to get two orders and call it dinner! The wine selection is excellent. Reservations are a must as this restaurant is cozy and small. I don't recommend taking a large group.
google avatar

Yelp
My company had the good luck to host a large customer dinner at IL Vicoletto. I'm surprised we were able to get so many people into the restaurant as is a bit snug but homey and warm. The wait staff was amazing and attentive for taking care of such a large party. They offered 2 selections of white wine and 2 selections of red. I had the bold red and loved it. For apps they served large baskets of bread with olive oil and aged balsamic vinegar. It was by far the best balsamic I've ever had. We also had charcuterie boards, caprese salads, eggplant parm, and calamari just to name a few. The calamari was fantastic. It was huge pieces of meat, thickly breaded and sweet to taste. I had the ragu pasta as an entree and even thought I was so full, I still ate every bite! I tried the panacatta for dessert and tried the pistachio and vanilla ice cream. Both were great but the ice cream was a bit more unique. The dinner was over 3 hours long but the food was just amazing. I hope to eat here again soon

Yelp
Fantastic experience in Dublin. My wife and I really enjoyed the atmosphere and, above all, the food. A true hidden gem.

Erin L.

Yelp
Packed beyond capacity. To the manager; Please don't take diners if chairs are constantly bumped, water can't be refilled and table is not once checked upon. The positives: the burrata appetizer was excellent. The ravioli dish was also excellent, albeit overly salted. The sea bass was mediocre and needed seasoning. The pasta itself was very good but under seasoned as well. Honestly, I wouldn't go back based on lack of service and horrible seating arrangements. Extremely uncomfortable. :(
google avatar

Bernie F.

Yelp
Loved everything about this place. Definitely need a reservation as walk-ins were being turned away. It's a small cozy spot on a side street. Food, wine and atmosphere are exactly what you want for a little Italian restaurant.
google avatar

Steve e.

Yelp
Food was great and along with a friendly style. It's a small place so you better make reservations but it's well worth going to. My wife and I loved it

David O.

Yelp
I've been to Italy twice and this is the best Italian food I've ever had. Ever. I think it's the best meal I've ever had. Ever. The service was spectacular, the restaurant is cozy, the atmosphere is wonderful. If you are in Dublin, stop by this place. My wife and I talked about delaying our flight just to have dinner here again. No joke. I'd give it six stars if I could.

Yelp
So, I learned my lesson in the busy area of town with a night life that just keeps going. If it's late and you're in the Temple Bar District, MAKE reservations. Luckily, I did around 8PM on a Sunday night, and we managed to get in by 9:15. It's a small place that gets packed and you really have to squeeze in there to get good and comfortable. Since the place is so small and crowded, it can get very loud inside. Add to these two factors, some of the Italian servers have accents that are very heavy, and they talk very quickly when trying to explain the menu specials. Nonetheless, they were very patient with us and explained the items multiple times until we could finally hear them and understand what they were saying. So here's what we ended up with: Ravioli Special (€19.50). The ravioli were stuffed with filet mignon, served in a chianti sauce, and topped with generous chunks of prosciutto. It was benissimo! I was told this dish changes often, since it's a chef homemade special, so check with your waiter. Pappardelle Ragu (€16.50) with ham spirals and a pink creamy bolognese sauce served over linguine noodles. TONS of wine selections abound, and they have a few beer options available as well. Please don't let me scare you away with my description of the place being crowded and loud. You WILL want to check this place out. The food was top notch, and so was the service. And it's a good change of pace from the few Irish traditional dishes that are available around town. #GoItalian!

BigTime T.

Yelp
We waited for 15 min, we weren't even addressed by anyone in restaurant. Have a hard recommending a place with service like that!

Elaine T.

Yelp
We had an 8 PM reservation on what turned out to a very busy night. The food was delicious but the experience was not pleasant. Very crowded and deafeningly loud, with tiny tables inches apart. The waitstaff lost interest in us when we did not order alcoholic drinks. They do not carry nonalcoholic beer and when I ordered a bottle of Pellegrino, was told "the bar is out" of lemons, although our food was liberally garnished with lemon wedges. A half hour wait for the apps, which were delicious when they arrived (fried squid and spicy prawns). We both had pasta with venison ragu, choosing a fast meal rather than a long wait for a subsequent main dish and because we could not converse. Things looked up a bit when the owner and then staff came by with the check and discovered we spoke Italian, so were friendlier. However, we would not return there.
google avatar

Phillip B.

Yelp
Italian food are the best my first time in country will come back again delicious alway the best food in world

MiMi N.

Yelp
Came at lunch when it is much less crowded. You need to make reservations for dinner. Service is nice, portions are small and food is overrated. The Calamari was good, bruschetta was small. It was good but not great. Pasta with sea bad had tiny pieces of fish. Tagliatelle with eggplant had tiny pieces of eggplant the ravioli with beef and cream sauce was very good. Pasta dishes were pretty small. Go for lunch to try the place but not worth it for dinner.

Ciara L.

Yelp
Amazing food, very authentic and great choices. Loved the prawn dish, tiramisu was to die for! Look forward to going back to try the calamari it looked fab. Little gem of a place Grazie!
google avatar

Schuyler K.

Yelp
All great! Entrées were the best, great selection of specialty breads. Cozy dining room, informed staff, no rush but very busy with line out the door. Make a reservation!
google avatar

Pellie A.

Yelp
A taste of Italy in Dublin. A cheerful staff creates a welcoming, intimate environment a short distance away from the crowds of Temple Bar. The bruschetta has fresh, flavorful cherry tomatoes for a light starter. Their pastas were a mix of traditional and Asian -fusion with well-balanced flavors on al dente pasta. Would highly recommend for a break from fish & chips.
google avatar

David S.

Yelp
The best food and service we had during our trip to Ireland. The staff had a great sense of humor and were very professional as well.
google avatar

J D.

Yelp
Authentic Italiano in the heart of touristy Dublin. The buffalo mozzarella was fresh and the pasta was cooked to perfection. The staff were all very nice and pleasant. Highly recommended.
google avatar

Matt G.

Yelp
Lorenzo and the rest of the staff were top tier. We loved our dinner and everything recommended was phenomenal. Highly recommend if you're in the area and looking for an authentic Italian experience.

Joan S.

Yelp
Great Italian.. authentic! Halibut was very nicely prepared. Very popular place.. best to reserve.
google avatar

Rachel C.

Yelp
I'm not exaggerating, this was the best meal I've ever had. My mom and I shared a bottle of wine, bruschetta, eggplant parm, and a vegetarian linguine. We fought over every bite. The staff was charming and knowledgeable. Fair warning it is small so we had to wait. So I'm sure a reservation would be a smart move.

W B K.

Yelp
Tiny Italian spot with great food and service. Eggplant appetizer, lamb ravioli and risotto were all excellent. The waiters were very friendly and quick. The wine list is extensive and very reasonable. Coming back next time in Dublin.
google avatar

Heike K.

Yelp
Downright fantastic - a little gem! I just realised I never finished this review originally but I vividly remember the place for fantastic Italian food and extremely friendly service. Trust the wine recommendation, you won't be disappointed. It's small - book in advance! Edit: after coming here again recently with three friends I can only double down on that original five star review. Burrata for a starter - melt in your mouth, the pasta main was on point, dessert (pears in chianti with ice cream) a dream, and the service couldn't be nicer. Their wine (and later grappa) recommendation did not disappoint either.
google avatar

Francine W.

Yelp
It took three different visits to be seated (without a reservation). It was worth the returns. The menu that's posted on the web is not current so keep that in mind. The wine list is very nice. The bruschetta was quite tasty. Definitely worth a visit if you enjoy authentic Italian dishes.
google avatar

Jay V.

Yelp
Temple bar area on Crow street. Intimate place that seats about 30 people. It's a wonderful place with very personable staff. We walked in on a Friday around 5:30 with a group of five and no reservation. The staff was very pleasant and transparent in offering us a table but explaining they had a reservation to honor at 7:00 pm. We readily accepted as we have been here in the past and know it is worth the slight decrease from the usual 2 hour experience. The pasta is freshly made and the wines are very reasonable. To be perfectly honest the staff is great and was wonderful with our daughter. Prices are very reasonable and nice selection. We started with an antipasto platter and some pasta and risotto. Our daughter started immediately with the linguini and seafood (she loved it with the abundance of seafood). The pasta was home made and wonderful texture. Wife had the t bone steak which was nice but as always in Italian places just overshadowed by the pasta and risotto. Dessert closed of the meal and another bottle of wine. Overall this is a must go to place so as to be able to have something other than another Irish meal.
google avatar

My N.

Yelp
Overall the best experience so far in Dublin. I would recommend making a reservation since it is a very small restaurant and gets very crowded. You are greeted by the amazing, friendly staff when you enter. The service they would provide is extraordinary! Even though the restaurant is crowded, you do not feel rushed. Everyone takes their time to enjoy their meal like you are having dinner at a friend/relative's home. The food & wine are amazing. Home made pastas were delicious. The stand out dish we had for the night is the raviol special (with meat) with fresh truffle. The wine we selected went very well with it. Highly recommend this restaurant.

Yelp
A cozy gem hidden away on a side street in the Temple Bar area of south side Dublin. The staff is very welcoming, but know that you likely can't just walk in and expect a table... booking in advance is probably a necessity! Three of us shared the Burratta with Bellota Ham appetizer, which was fabulous. I loved my entree, linguini con fruiti di Mari, perfectly cooked and seasoned over house made noodles. My wife had the risotto with summer squash and Sicilian red prawns, again an amazing, perfectly prepared dish! The third in our party opted for the Halibut with tomato, olives, capers and potatoes... again wonderfully prepared and presented! The extensive wine list is about 7 pages, encompassing over 200 bottles...it focuses on Italian wines predominately, but has something for any wine lover. Can't say enough about this fabulous spot, the food and gracious staff ... Grazie mille per un pasto fantastico!

David R.

Yelp
Wow--great restaurant. Staff very nice and helpful. Food was amazing and great wine list, very very pleased!
google avatar

Shawn L.

Yelp
We were here almost three years ago and my family and I still rate it as the best Italian meal we've ever had! Hands down!!! The food, the wine, the service were all just spectacular! Definitely make reservations as the place is small.
google avatar

Dani A.

Yelp
Absolutely incredible! The food was some of the best Italian food we had ever had. The service was amazing and the atmosphere was perfect!
