The Best Things to Do in Melbourne (Updated 2025)

"If you're on a tighter budget, I recommend taking a free walking tour; I'm Free Walking Tours offers a couple of different free walks that give a fun, educational introduction to the city and its history, and you should be sure to tip your guide at the end." - Matthew Kepnes

Our family loves doing these free tours and Sydney’s was no exception. We did the full 2.5 hour Sydney tour. Our tour guide Kieran was a great speaker and clearly very passionate about the city he grew up in. We loved the tour so much we signed up for the night tour of The Rocks. We made sure to stick with Kieran as well the second time, and his stories about the dark side of the early colony were entertaining and engaging. Here are some photos of the locations we stopped at on The Rocks tour.

Had an awesome tour today with Zoe my guide. Enjoyed ever minute of it This was my 2nd visit to Sdyney after 15 years and I never had a chance to go on a guided walking tour in the past. In today's 3 hour walk, I felt that I got to know this city like a local. I enjoyed every minute of it The walking pace was good, not too fast neither too slow. I noticed that the 23 of us tourists were able to keep pace. Zoe's voice was loud enough for me to hear and easy to catch up. Would certainly recommend to friends who are visiting for the first time.

Had an amazing morning with Scott on Sydney’s city walk-style road trip! We visited so many fascinating spots, each brought to life by his clear, accessible historical and cultural insights—perfect for travelers. Scott was incredibly responsible and attentive, always making sure everyone crossed the streets safely. His warmth and care made the tour feel relaxed and enjoyable. A top-notch experience that’s a must for anyone wanting to explore Sydney’s gems!

Had a fabulous experience today with Brad our tour guide. Plenty of history and information on Sydney, a nice walk around the city and great presentation by Brad. Will definitely recommend this if anyone wants to know the city from the locals... Great job!! Thank you guys for a lovely morning.

Great tours! We did the classic Sydney walking tour with Paul and it was amazing! So informative, with humor thrown in. He provided a great introduction to Sydney, it's culture and landmarks. The teenager in the group also enjoyed the tour. Highly recommend. You are expected to tip at the end of the tour, in cash or with a credit card. I took money from the bank to pay in cash but the guide also had a card reader so you could tap with a credit. Definitely worth the money!l We also did The Rocks tour - I do not remember the guide's name but this was also a good tour. If I had to only pick one tour, I would do the original tour.

Google
Three hours with our guide Paul taking us on a tour through the city centre down to Circular Quay and on to the Rocks to the Harbour bridge. Some great stories told and local knowledge imparted by Paul. Tour was at a decent pace and included a mid way stop for toilets etc. This is a pay what you like model but it’s quality and worth a decent payment.

Google
My second tour in two days! Loved the insights shared at each location - made history come alive! As I usually wander away from walking tours, I was pleasantly surprised to see that I was actually interested in what was said! Well paced and informative! Highly recommend. (Visiting from Canada). The pics are from The Rocks tour and yes I saw a parrot! Lol.

Google
I’ve taken this tour twice with friends/family who have visited me here in Sydney, it’s amazing! So informative and a great way to see hidden gems and hear the stories behind the Rocks. Paul was our guide and he was super enthusiastic and knowledgeable, thank you ⭐️

Yelp
We did our tour on the first of three days in Sydney, which worked really well. Our guide, Scott, was entertaining throughout and we learnt a lot about the history of Sydney as well as plenty of pointers on what to do. They also have more info on the website (don't miss Ol' Mates Place which is featured!). I even bought a pack of Chicken Salt to bring back to the UK!

Yelp
Worth it! Lots Information from local tour guide. Waking around historical building and sydney town was amazing Thank you!

Yelp
Our first stop in Sydney was the "free walking tour." I love these tours and always check to see if they have one in any domestic or international trip I'm taking. In my experiences, the guides are always very entertaining, informative and give you great tips on things to do, see or eat. This tour didn't disappoint. We started in a central location in Sydney and was surprised with the large group. There were two guides and we were split into two separate groups. I forgot our tour guide name but he was entertaining and kept the tour lively. I loved his feedback on the frenemy relations between Sydney and Melbourne. He showed us most of the major attractions and areas to check out. He explained the public transportation systems. He recommended places to eat and at the end of the tour helped everyone with questions. These guides live off tips and I always ensure I tip generously for their much appreciated services.

Yelp
What a great tour, so much information, kept it moving and great recommendations. Highly recommend but DO NOT STIFF THEM!! Free means it's your choice what to pay, don't be stingy! These are guides who deserve to be paid!

Yelp
I'm Free Tours offers a wonderful, educational, and scenic experience of Sydney's CBD and The Rocks. Our tour guide, Ramsey, was very friendly, knowledgable, and enthusiastic throughout the tour. The walking tour runs for about 3 hours, with a short 10 minute break midway, for coffee, snacks, and the bathroom. The meeting point is outside Town Hall (just look for a tour guide wearing a bright green shirt) at 10:30am or 2:30pm, daily. The last stop is at a lookout tower near Circular Quay, which concludes the tour with a nice view of the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House. Other points of interest that we visited were Queen Victoria Building (QVB), Westfield, Hyde Park, Sydney Hospital, The Rocks, and Circular Quay, just to name a few. Some cool and interesting facts I learned: - The ground that Town Hall is built on used to be an old cemetery, so body remains have been found while digging. - Sydney Hospital has a pig statue outside, and people rub the nose for good luck. However, some people have rubbed elsewhere... based on the faded color. - The Rocks used to be populated with gangs back in the late 1800's. One gang tortured people by tying them to benches and beating them with wet sand-stuffed socks. - The Opera House was budgeted at $7 million, but it actually cost $102 million when complete. Overall, I'm Free Tours is a great way to explore the main parts of Sydney. Tour guides make money based on tips, so give whatever amount you think your tour is worth. If you're visiting/ vacationing in Sydney for the first time, I highly recommend taking a tour at the beginning of your trip; therefore you get an overview of which places to explore if you have more time, which restaurants to eat, etc.

Yelp
I did the 10:30 AM tour and the weather was great (no rain). They started 10 minutes later. It was a big group so we were split into 2 groups. Our tour guide was Justine, founder of Imfree walking tours. She was cool. She answered all questions I asked. Got a decent amount of history and information about Sydney CBD (Americans would call it Downtown Sydney). I've never done other paid tours or other free walking tours to compare this to, but I would say it was worth going to instead of walking around to several landmarks one by one. Particularly because my days were limited. She does suggest you tip her at the end of the tour. There are 2 other tours later in the day. It would be nice to allow for quick photo taking at a few stops instead of missing out on the tour guide's history talk. Then again it's a 2.5 hour tour and will drag on.

Yelp
I HIGHLY recommend this tour to both tourists and locals. I'm from California, and my husband is from Sydney, and we both went on the tour and BOTH learned a lot. The tour guide really takes you to all the key, important places that they city has to offer. He gives so much information about the history on each place (which is what the locals can all learn). Most Sydneysiders that I know didn't even realize there was a huge floor model of the whole city inside the Customs Building, until I told them after I saw it on the tour! Of course, the tour guides ask for tips at the end and you kind of get guilt tripped into giving. But it's SO worth it. The guide simply asks you to give what you think it was worth...and at least to me, it's worth A LOT. P.S. Definitely bring comfortable walking shoes.

Yelp
A great way to get to know a city! We did the Sydney walking tour right after landing to make sure we were out and about and didn't fall asleep. Our tour guide, Asher, did an excellent job introducing us to the city and made it very interesting. It moved at just the right pace, including one bathroom break. Highly recommend doing a walking tour as a way to get your bearings in a new city, and our guide was a Sydneysider and was a great resource for our touristing questions!
google avatar

Yelp
Highly recommend! Justine is fantastic. Her pace is great, not too fast and she does not talk until we all stop, better than the tour guys that talk as you walk. There are some stairs so if you have issues with stairs, it will be tough for you. The tour is almost 3 hours long with a 10 min break in between for small washroom break. You can see why she is so popular. She is very friendly and passionate about her city. She will give you directions to a few hidden place around town. Great to take a tour with Justine to get to know about the city.

Yelp
Imfree tours is a great way to see some of the sights of Sydney! They offer two tours, the 3 hour Sydney sight tour, and the 1.5 hour "the Rocks" tour. I went on the latter which is offered everyday at 6pm. Just show up in front of Cadman's Cottage down by the Quay and look for the guide in a bright green t-shirt. I found the tour to be entertaining and interesting. The only down side I found was if you ask deeper questions, the guide may not have that level of detail. For example we were interested in learning how a youth hostel got built over a historic dig site and the answer was along the lines of, " I wondered that too". But they do take you to many sights that you may not see on your own and have lots of local information to share. The guides work on tips alone so know that you will be asked for money at the end. And people, know what a tour of this level is worth. I was surprised to see how little some in our group gave the guide. Also know that there are many steps, hills and inclines on this walk which is not mentioned in their brochure. Some in our group were really not ready for the intensity of the walk so wear comfortable shoes and be physically able to stand and climb for the entire time. Btw- the brochure they give you is chock full of other useful information of things to do i expensively or free in Sydney so check that out as well. All in all, a great way to see Sydney!

Yelp
A perfect way to start a trip to Sydney. We were lucky enough to go on both the 'Sydney Sights' and 'The Rocks' walking tours with founder, Justine. She's clearly put a lot of time into researching the city's history, but it's not a dry history lesson. Instead, it's filled with quirky facts about the city - like how the government houses were built by rum. 'I'm Free Tours' are a great value. The guides work on a tips basis. So it's advertised as being available to any budget and you pay them at the end tour. The Sydney Sights tour is a perfect way for new visitors to see some classic Sydney sights and get ideas for the rest of their trip. Justine also made recommendations on the tour for places like her favourite free and paid museums and bars with a view. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather, as there is a lot of walking.

Yelp
How could I say anything bad about a FREE walking tour of Sydney?! This tour was all that it was cracked up to be - free maps with nightly coupons/deals, a small group, and local knowledge from a very personable twenty-something Sydneysider (he was actually Melburnian by birth and he had a lot to say about that as well!). It didn't hurt that it was a beautiful 32 degree (C) spring day! We hit all the main sights including the Opera House (of course), the Sydney Harbor Bridge, the old hospital, the Rocks, and much more. I learned so much about the history of Sydney/Australia, and he also pointed out where different scenes from movies like the matrix were shot. We also went by the main shopping center and all of the legislative buildings, and he told us that we could go up in the space-needle type thing for free! (Well just dress nice and buy a drink at the top). The tour didn't cost anything to sign up but he did ask for a donation at the end, but I was more than happy to part with a fiver for everything I saw and learned about.

Yelp
Their walking tour of Sydney was the first thing I did after checking into my hostel after I arrived! I can't stress enough how awesome and informative this tour was! Our guide answered all of the questions the group had, and was funny and captivating through the 3 hour tour. And we covered so much ground! I probably wouldn't have seen half the things that I saw on this tour if I had tried to do it on my own. 10/10 would recommend this company!

Yelp
Wow, this was a great! If you're a first-time visitor to Sydney, I'd say this is a must-do since it helps one get their bearings on the city. The tour lasts about 3 hours and we were taken to most of the important spots around the city. Besides taking you around, you get some "inside" knowledge on things like their "Thursday night shopping", free bus services and where to get free Wi-Fi. One also gets advice of what tours to do and what tours can be skipped. The tour guide is a great resource for anyone looking to get more information on Sydney.
google avatar

Justine C.

Yelp
A fairly clever concept. Although the tour/s - either the Sydney sights tour and/or The Rocks Walking Tour are free; however it is advisable to pay your tour guide in cash (Justine - not me, another Justine or Ross) what you feel the experience is worth at the end. I'm Free could then imply that "I'm" (the tour guide) is free to take you on a tour. Clever stuff. Exceptional value. These two (Justine and Ross) are walking encyclopedia's of Sydney. Ross is so passionate about The Rocks. Quirky facts can utter out at any moment. You need to concentrate as well as enjoy. Have your walking shoes on, you will be in for a walking treat. I even did the Melbourne walking tour with Matt and that was just as awesome. Whether you live in Sydney, or are a visitor, either way any of the two tours are worth your time. The Rocks Walking Tour starts at 6pm near the MCA. Look out for a green shirt, and the sights tour starts at 10:30am or 1:30pm - again look out for a green shirt.

Yelp
I don't just love Sydney. I bleed for it. Turns out some other people bleed for it too. Maybe more than I do. Which makes me want to make *them* bleed. Nah, I just said that for effect, and to sound tough (ladies). One guy that knows this place like the back of his Apple Maps is Ross, one of the founders of I'm Free Walking Tours. After scoping out some of the sick free tours in Europe, they started up in Sydney, and I'll tell you this much for free: they're awesome. On a balmy summer evening we spent 1.5hrs cruising around The Rocks area and checking out stuff I'd walked past a hunnerd times and never realised was there. Like a secret alley off George Street, right opposite the MCA, where push gangs used to beat people senseless and steal their stuff. You learn tonnes of convict-era history, like which Sydney Governor had the smallest . . . . er, street. There's stuff I didn't even know existed, like the open Roman-style ruins, a roofless house with cast iron furniture that's a great place for a picnic or a sly drink, the recently deregulated housing commission terraces, the pub that had to be moved to accommodate the Harbour Bridge, the cannons on Observatory Hill that were aimed at the city rather than the water, the great Irish Uprising, and loads of other stuff. As the name suggests, the tour is totally free, but you're welcome to give tips to your guides in exchange for one of the funnest things you'll do all year.
google avatar

Veronica H.

Yelp
Totally worth it! Fun and awesome! Learned so much and it was a couple hours long! Make sure you tip! They also pass out a little map with the city, AND it was some suggestions of places to go and places to dine, it also has Deals on it i.e. show this map and get $$ off your pizza!
google avatar

Raph T.

Yelp
If you're not from Sydney, or even if you are, this is an absolute MUST do when in Sydney. You learn so much in the 2 or so hours that you are walking around the city, marveling at things that you wouldn't usually look at. The guides are always extremely approachable and you can ask them anything, they know everything. Seriously, do yourself a favour and rock up to one of these. Do it.
google avatar

Maus M.

Yelp
Didn't really learn too much that I didn't already know. Lisa is a good speaker and is clearly passionate about the city she calls home. The entire tour is designed to lure you along until the end with promises of "I'll tell you more about that in a couple of stops". Sometimes, that didn't happen. Worst part with a large group is getting separated at a light. She left about 8 of us behind and we never saw her again. Most of our group hooked up with the 2nd guide when we found him. I left. Tired of the luring pleas for money. If this tour is supposed to be worth $40-$50 per person and they claim they show you more than the other tours-pick up a book for $17 and walk where you want to walk. The Customs House city diorama was neat. The rest is passable. Not worth it for me. Probably good for people who have never read about Sydney at all.
google avatar

Scott W.

Yelp
Wife and I were in Sydney for our honeymoon and had some time to kill one afternoon and so we found ourselves walking around Sydney for 3 hours, following our green-shirt wearing tour guide. And let me say, the tour was fantastic. It doesn't really feel like 3 hours when you get a chance to learn so much about Sydney's history and see a lot of the cool sights. There's a break in the middle which is nice because, again, 3 hours of walking straight. Totally worth the price of $0 (but you should really give the guide a little something at the end) and perfect if you want to explore a new city.
google avatar

Daniela H.

Yelp
Great! 3 hour walking tour through Sydney including all the important sights and loads of interesting stories! It's originally thought for backpackers but I saw many other people there as well as families. If you are short on money, don't bother with a group of 30 people plus and like walking - defo go for it :) they will ask you at the end to give whatever you think Don't bother with bus tours through city centre - do the walking tour, so you'll get to enjoy the sun too!
google avatar

Jatinder J.

Yelp
So glad I found this - I was visiting from California and didn't have too much time here but the walking tour covered a ton of information - some of which only a local would know! I would say this is the perfect way to start off a visit, since you can go back to things that were mentioned. Appreciated that the tour was free and loved how knowledgeable the tour guide was.
google avatar

Yen C.

Yelp
Best tour we've ever had anywhere. Relaxing and informative walking tour with friendly guide. Recommend doing morning tour so you could follow up with lunch at one of the many places you've just discovered!
google avatar

Kiera S.

Yelp
AMAZING. I'm usually not a fan of tours of any sort, but this was truly fantastic. Great way to learn about Sydney, and doesn't focus exclusively on the big ticket places like the Opera House and bridge. Instead, the tour takes you on a three hour journey through inner Sydney with tonnes of interesting facts about other places you wouldn't normally see or learn about. Pay what you can, or what you feel the tour is worth. Just wonderful.
google avatar

Dawn W.

Yelp
Our guide Daneka (hope I spelt it right!) was funny quirky and full of fun facts and stories about the city. She was extremely well versed having done it for two years and you could tell she must have been to be able to do the 4.5 hours of walking and talking (3 hours Sydney Day tour that kicked off at 2:30pm and 1.5 hour tour of The Rocks) with such gusto and enthusiasm. What I loved was the anecdotes about the city so it didn't feel like I was sitting through some boring history lesson. One of the best tours I have ever done in fact I loved it so much I will be doing their Melbourne tour too! Please remember that whilst it is FREE they aren't getting paid for it and their pay solely comes from the tips of the groups they lead so please do tip generously knowing that a tour with this level of detail would cover half of what they covered in the 4.5 hours and still expect upwards of $40 pp. Wear comfortable shoes. I had to hobble home after wearing flat shoes I hadn't quite broken into properly. So wear your trainers or Jesus sandles for this. Yeah they aren't sexy but no one's watching. Just look out for the people in bright green tshirts between the Town Hall and St Andrews Cathedral on George St (they have a 10:30am tour and 2:30pm tour) and for The Rocks tour, you can find them in front of Cadmans Cottage at 6pm. Everyday, rain hail or shine they will be walking :-)
google avatar

Dori H.

Yelp
Just finished a walking tour with Jake and it was well worth it! Kind and knowledgeable. We've done these in other cities and highly recommend them. Especially on your first day! You'll learn things you want to go back to and find your way around the city! Thanks!

Yelp
Fun and the guide answers a lot of questions that have helped us navigate Sydney for the short time we are here.

Yelp
Just wandering by ourselves exploring Sydney when we spotted the T-shirt that states "I'm Free"...which make my eyes stare at these girls (;...so I just asked them what it was and decided to take the next "Free" tour that day. It was an awesome tour but did require a few hours of walking..so make sure you are ready to walk a lot. The tour hits the main tourist attraction, plus other locations that had interesting locations or background. The tour guide was friendly and did know about Sydney since he grew up there. Just awesome and cool to learn so much in a day's trip that doesn't cost a dime. Make sure you do give them some $$$ (donation), since they do not charge.
google avatar

Yelp
Highly recommend for a newbie. Very informative and it hits all of the best areas of the cty

Yesenia E.

Yelp
My boyfriend & I did the 1430 tour today. Our tour was with this young girl named Lisa; very enthusiastic & sassy. I sure was engaged throughout the whole tour. We got a very informative walk/tour that overpassed my expectations. I'm thinking to do their evening tour too while here in Sydney.
google avatar

Nicole B.

Yelp
This was a great tour. It was wonderful to see Sydney through the eyes of a local. Our tour guide was a newly graduated history student at the University of Sydney. His excitement for his home made the tour great. Why not 5 stars? I've been on better free tours of similar nature in Europe that have much more to offer so I may be biased. I understand that this tour is fairly new. It has amazing potential to improve and I highly recommend people to take this tour. If you are arriving in Sydney from the states, it is a great half-day tour to do the day you arrive if you have nothing else planned.
google avatar

Peter T.

Yelp
Our tour guide Rachel gave us a very pleasant and interesting tour, taking in sights and places that i have never before seen of Sydney. Starting at Hyde Park and ending at 'The Rocks' we were taken through some of Sydney's most historical places. Sydney is just amazing and this tour should be a must for any visitor. Well done 'I'm Free Tours'
google avatar

Marie-Christine L.

Yelp
I recommend this free tour to anyone on a budget who wants to discover the great city of Sydney. We had lots of fun walking under the sunshine and listening to the differents facts & anecdotes. We saw the main sights in only a few hours which was just perfect for us who didn't have much time to wonder around the city. Even it says it's free, do not forget to leave a donation as a sign of appreciation. Thank you so much to our guide, Kate who was both interesting and friendly. You made our day :-)
google avatar

Karla g.

Yelp
This was a great tour! The guide was very nice, informative, and friendly.
google avatar

Michelle S.

Yelp
Just got back from Australia and one of the first things I did was take the Sydney three-hour tour. Great place to start when arriving in Sydney as you get to see the main sights such as the Opera House, Sydney Harbor Bridge, different neighborhoods such as the Rocks, and you get to learn about the history of Sydney. It is a free tour but donations are appreciated. The tour guide gave a lot of helpful information on things to see and do. The tour is well worth it and I would definitely recommend it!
google avatar

Joanna M.

Yelp
I've lived here for a year, my parents have come to visit once, and all of us love these tours. Seriously, my dad can't stop raving about the guide on his tour (Josh) and after doing my own first trip this week with Lisa, I'm a believer. Insightful, excited guides who speak at the right pace and volume and can answer every question. I didn't think I would, but I definitely learned a thing or two. An awesome deal, I just wish I'd been able to give them more of my money!
google avatar

Xuan N.

Yelp
Brilliant idea. Guides are friendly and knowledgeable. The tour is very interesting and a lot of fun. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Great energy, funny stories, and a nice way to discover the center of Sydney. the founder of this tour was also the guide and she is very good to make your love her city. Take some comfy shoes.

Yelp
Best 3 hours spent in Sydney, hands down. Our guide, Justine, was awesome and kept a perfect pace both in speed and amount of information she provided. We had a diverse group in our tour of 10 of various ages and nationalities. We saw all of the highlights of Sydney listed in our guidebook and we learned lots of interesting tidbits. It ends perfectly at the Sydney Opera House. Lots of great photo opportunities. I'm usually not a fan of tours, but this one was awesome. I'm so glad we went on it.

Charles B.

Yelp
So after landing we decided to tough it out and attempt to stay awake for the three hour tour. Needless to say, it was the right decision and the prefect way to start our trip. We liked it so much that we came back for the second tour at The Rocks. Matt, the tour guide, was perfect and very informative. If you get a chance be sure to ask the guide for recommendations for places to check out.

Matthew K.

Yelp
Like everybody else, I was a little bit surprised that this tour was free. I really didn't have much thought as to whether this would be worth it. It absolutely turned out to be extremely worth it. And it makes me think that one of the smartest things that a person can do is not charge anything and wait for gratuities at the end. This way, the people who are in the tour don't feel like they have been robbed and they can give as they like and I think that they usually do give appropriately. Our tour leader was named Joshua and is a very nice guy who is a history graduate student. He was extremely informative and the only thing I can say negative was that he has a tremendous amount of guilt for what he perceives to be the abuse of the native people. While part of that is valid, at one point he effectively did a 15 minute monologue proclaiming his guilt with several people looking around at each other not really sure what to say. Perhaps this is something he can take up with a therapist rather than during the tour. Besides that I would recommend it to anybody in a heartbeat and I would even go again because I'm sure I would learn other information that I didn't already know.
