The 8 Best Hostels in Tokyo (Updated 2025)

"Imano Tokyo placed me right in central Shinjuku, which is ideal for nightlife, though the rooms are small; the hostel has a common area and a cafe/bar downstairs that serves breakfast and coffee in the morning and drinks and light snacks in the evening. The beds are brand-new and comfortable with privacy curtains, reading lights and individual sockets, and the hostel is well set up for female travelers with separate men’s, women’s and mixed floors." - Matthew Kepnes

A good breakfast. The beds were exceptional for a Japanese hostel. (Vertical instead of horizontal was the only complaint , but it was an important one for me). The beds were very soft. The hostel was very good about security, but the lock changed the layout of the numbers after every use, which was very annoying) The common room on each floor was great. They were very opposed to sexual hanky panky, which surprised me. I saw a couple get chewed out for showering together which amused me. The laundry facilities were very good and cheap.

The staff may know more english than many if the other places but that just means you can understand them being blunt and rude. The rooms don't smell nice, The shoe 'locker' doesn't have locks. There is no secure luggage storage unless you pay extra for a small box that wouldn't fit my gear (I am travelling light). The AC clicked constantly making it impossible to concentrate, Someone was snoring loudly I my dorm, The beds were not made, and on the top bunks that is difficult to deal with. I paid for the breakfast service and was given a redeemable card but it was not honoured because I was a minute late getting to the cafe. The place is a hole. I had a reservation for 2 nights but I booked another hotel after realising the state of the place. If you are on a budget and desperately need a place for the night keep your belongings close, but general advice would be pick a different hostel

Staff are super nice, they all speak fluent English. The check-in, check-out process is easy. I was worrying about the luggage problem because the review before saying that the hostel don't have the luggage storing service, but during my visit this time they do allow you to put your luggage at first floor temporarily before check-in or after check-out. So there's no need to concern about it. They offer shampoo, conditioner and body wash in shower room, but you need to prepare your own towel and toothbrush. (You can also buy it at the front desk) The room is simple and clean. I saw some people would think the soundproofing was bad, but I think it depends on the roommates and the other people you shared the same floor. During my four nights stay there, I was lucky enough to have a quite time at nights. The only inconvenience I found is the size of the room. The aisle is pretty narrow, and you won't be able to fully open your luggage. You have to pack your thing in the public space outside of the room or on your own bad. But other things are just really good. The location is great. (At least 3 convenient store within 100 meters) and it's really close to Shinjuku station. The price is also really good. Totally foreigner friendly. Definitely recommend.

Shittiest hostel ever stayed in. They dont even give you a made up bed. You have to make your own bed. They even charge for towels. Rude staff & 0 consideration. Overcharge for everything. Paid around 6000 yen per night. Absolutely not worth it

Four of us were supposed to stay for three nights, we checked in at 7 pm and we checked right back out around 9 pm. I’ve stayed at hostels before but was not expecting this. The staff was friendly but the pictures online make the room appear bigger than they are. The room is so narrow the only ideal luggage to bring is a backpack or a small carry on. The room was warm and it didn’t smell good. Told the staff we would not be returning and they were friendly about it - no questions were asked. They told me no refund which was expected but for not staying being out $500+ sucks especially since we paid that amount when we arrived which was only two hours of staying there. We found another sleeping accommodation elsewhere.

If you don't know what to expect from a hostel, this is probably not going to be your first choice. However, if you are traveling on a budget and don't mind sharing a room with up to 5 other people, then this is a fairly nice place. Very friendly staff, beds are comfortable, rooms are clean, and amenities are decent. Community area on each floor, Cafe on main floor, separate floors for men and women. Not alot of spots if you need to charge multiple items, but there are areas. We didn't stay overnight as 2 in our group of 5 didn't like not being able to stay together. But from what I did see and experience, it's a good place to stay, especially if you are on a budget.

Tonight is my last night here at Imano Tokyo Hostel. It feels like a good hotel with excellent amenities and service. I'm very satisfied and I recommend this place. It's worth every penny you pay for the stay. Do add breakfast when you book. 👌👍👍

Yelp
Good hostel in a pretty great location. It's nice and quiet inside and most people respect each other's privacy. The dorms are clean and the beds are somewhat comfy. The bathrooms were always cleaned and the showers are nice and hot. I liked that they provided shampoo, conditioner, and body wash in the showers. The only issues was that this is a place to stay for a little while, not many people wanted to hang out or is there a large common area for people to meet up besides the small lobby. The front desk people are super helpful and informative. Definitely would stay back here again though.

Yelp
This place is terrible! After seeing their hostel in person, I was disgusted and no longer wanted to stay there. They refused to refund me my money. This place smelled like stinky socks and mold. The paint was chipping, the outlets were grossly discolored. It looked like a military boot camp with hard beds. Felt like I was in an underground bomb shelter that served canned food for lunch. I was forced to take my bags and go to a different hostel that was 10 times better. Avoid this place at all cost! Don't make the same mistake I made! Ask for a tour of the hostel before paying!

Yelp
The locker is the size of a mailbox. The third floor was super hot in November. The heater was on too high. The top bunk was dusty, I'm allergic to dust and it was not nice. The outside looks modern and the place is only couple years old but the rooms looks ancient. It's walking distant from all the busy happening but Tokyo overall is spread out.

Yelp
Imano is great! We stayed here for a few nights as our first stop in Tokyo. Located in the Shinjuku area there are many awesome places nearby. Close to things such as Robot Restaurant, Harajuku, and Shibuya crossing. There are women's, men's, and shared areas/rooms. Beds are comfortable and clean. Bathrooms also!! Clean and tended to regularly. Never had any issues sharing space with other guests. Lockers for a small rental deposit, but they are small so only valuables fit. Full size towels also for rent, blow dryers and laundry available. Two prong plugs only so adaptor recommended for any foreign plugs. Great stay and friendly mostly English speaking staff!!

Yelp
Great location in Shinjuku - three min walk from the Shinjuku Sanchome subway stop or about twelve minutes from the JR Shinjuku station. Japan really wins the award for best hostels. This isn't your grimy and questionably safe European hostel, this place is not only super clean and modern looking, it's newly renovated and amazing bang for your buck. (rooms start at 3800 yen/night, which is roughly $30 USD). There are seperate floors for females and males and shampoo, conditioner, body wash, as well as hair dryers are provided, which is extremely nice. There are individual lights, outlets and curtains in each of the bunks as well. Downstairs, the main lobby doubles as a cafe/bar as well as the check in counter, which is 24/7. Highly recommend this place.

Yelp
Good location and friendly staff. Facilities okay, no luggage storage after you check out. Found the rooms very crowded with limited space to open your bag. The bar/cafe isn't anything special.

Yelp
I've been to over 26 countries and stayed at many hostels and I'm happy to say Imano Tokyo Hostel ranks at the Top of my list. The building is modern, the staff is always so nice and inviting from the moment of check in till your last day. The staff is friendly and super helpful and they all seem to really enjoy their job. The rooms are so tidy and each room you need a code to get in which is reassuring when leaving your stuff. The cleaning staff keeps everything so clean and tidy. There is a washer $2 Yen and dryer $1 Yen which are easy to use and you can purchase detergent $1 Yen at the front desk. They have a fun schedule of food parties, happy hour and even free Japanese classes. They have a bar and restaurant where they have happy hour with really good prices food all day and cheap beers. Another benefit is the currency exchange machine in the main lobby. The location is perfect and central to everything you would want to see in Tokyo. Definitely will be staying here again when I come back to Tokyo.
