7 Places Worth Trying to See on a Visit to the Korean DMZ

"Imjingak Resort is not really a resort. Located about seven kilometers from the Korean Peninsula’s Military Demarcation Line, it was constructed in 1972 to serve as a place of remembrance for divided families following the Korean War. One section of Imjingak is Unification Park, which includes a number of statues and monuments to the war. Nearby there is also a restaurant, an observation deck, and a small amusement park for children. Adjacent to the park you can visit the so-called Freedom Bridge, which crosses the Imjin river. It’s a former railroad bridge once used by repatriated POWs returning from the North. Today a section of the bridge has been transformed into a moving and unique memorial, a place where families often come to tie colored ribbons to remember loved ones.  Imjingak is a frequent site of annual and special events honoring South Korean desires for reunification." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Beautiful. Spacious park. You can walk trails. Has a lit of restaurants. Gondola rides. Coffee shop with observation rooftop. You can see actual railroad to North Korea even though it is not working at this time. Can see old steam train etc

On one side we get to see the monuments of the devastating Korean war such as the steam locomotive riddled with bullets, the monument for lost families, and altar for the lost lives, a bunker, peace bell, freedom bridge etc and on the other side there is a gondola ride and other activities. This place is usually crowded as it kickstarts the DMZ tour. There are ample shops and restaurants.

I highly suggest you book the 6am DMZ tour. Yes, it's super early, but there will be less crowd, especially during the tunnel. I booked mine with Klook (tour guide was Sadie) and it was incredible. She told us so many stories and historical facts that made me understand a little more about Korean War. I suggest everyone to visit.

Imjingak Park is one of the best places to learn about Korean history and the division between North and South Korea. The old train, once a symbol of unity, now stands as a powerful reminder of the separation. With monuments, the Freedom Bridge, and other historic sites, it’s a must visit to understand Korea’s past and hope for peace.

This was a family friendly park. There are so many spaces for family activities and art installation. Would definitely check it out after seeing the DMZ experiences. There is that game from Squid Game on the concrete.

Just a pity we rushed waking up before 6AM, so as to wait and spend here some hours at this park… If they really have a systematic scheduling, we don’t have to wake up such an early hour, just to waste hours on a park that can be done under an hour. Looks like this is their waiting area for the Tunnel and village. The gondola was so-so. You won’t really see anything.

We came to this scenic spot with a tour group, but unfortunately, our stay was too short to fully appreciate all that it has to offer. For those traveling in South Korea, Imjingak Park (임진각) is a must-go destination. Not only can you learn about the complex history of this country, but you can also experience the mysterious feeling of being able to watch North Korea from a distance. Imjingak Park is strategically located within the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) between North and South Korea, along the picturesque Imjin River. This park represents the northernmost point where Koreans can travel freely, making it a significant landmark for both locals and tourists. As you explore the area, you will encounter numerous war relics that tell the story of the Korean conflict. These include a bunker, which offers a glimpse into the past, and a rest area where visitors can reflect on the historical significance of the site. The park is equipped with a cable car that provides stunning aerial views of the surrounding landscape. Additionally, there is a three-story observation deck that allows for an even closer look at the border region. The beautifully landscaped garden adds to the tranquility of the area, while the amusement park offers a fun diversion for families. With so much to see and do, Imjingak Park is truly a place where you can immerse yourself in history while enjoying the natural beauty of the surroundings. It’s a location that invites longer exploration and reflection, making it a perfect spot for a memorable visit.

For those traveling or even living in South Korea, Imjingak Park (임진각) is a must see destination not only in terms learning a bit about this country's history but also for the aerie feeling of looking at North Korea from afar. The Imjingak park is located within the demilitarized zone (DMZ) of North Korea and South Korea alongside the Imjin river and is the furthest point north that South Koreans can freely travel. There are many war artifacts exposed, a bunker, a resting area,a cable car, a three-store observatory, a garden, and an amusement park. Basically, anything one needs to spend an entire day here.
