The Ultimate Machu Picchu Travel Guide

"One of the main private rail operators serving the route, offering stylish, cozy train options with different classes and configurations, including trains with open‑air balconies and panoramic observatory cars. These services are convenient and scenic, but seats and specialty cars can sell out quickly, so advance booking is advised." - Amanda Ogle Amanda Ogle Amanda Ogle is a writer and editor who specializes in travel, food and drink, sustainability, and general lifestyle topics. A cool ride to a cool place. Nobody tells you all you have to do to get to Machu Picchu but I promise your eyes will thank you. Not to mention the tasty vegan restaurant in Aguas Calientes. The rail entertained us with a reenactment of a traditional indigenous love story. They offered drinks and snacks for a purchase. The seats were a bit snug for my taste but the view is visually stimulating. The staff were organized, professional, and friendly.

Mayra was super helpful and understanding. I would totally recommend Inca Rail over the company for traveling to Cusco. They treated us with respect and kindness and were very helpful and understanding of our situation. Would totally travel with them again. Thank you Mayra, you have given us the best customer service experience out of whole trip to Peru

Shuttle service from Cusco was awful. There’s very little space in between seats, so you get squeezed by the reclined seat in front of you and kicked by the passenger behind you. They did a 30 min stop in the 2 hours ride from Cusco to Ollantaytambo, making the already long trip from Cusco to Aguas Calientes unnecessarily longer. The train station waiting room is too small and was really crowded. The food on their coffee shop was overpriced. The boarding process was amateurish. A terrible and very expensive experience.

Perfectly fine. It's one of 2 train companies that take you to machu picchu town. The scenery is very pretty. You cannot pick your seats so going there we were facing backwards while returning we were seated forwards. The train ride takes about 1.5 hours, stops along the way for other trains to pass.Snacks available to buy on board. Took the cheapest option the voyager. There is more expensive options. Baggage can be stored under your seat or in the space between the seats behind you. No luggage storage cart or area. On the return trip if you booked the bimodal to cusco they will assign/tell you a bus # to go to when you arrive in ollataytambo ( they will give you a paper with the bus # and # of people to show to the bus/ sprinter driver). That will be the bus that will drive you back to cusco( another 2 to 2.5 hrs). The AC was not on but the air coming through the sprinter windows was fine and it wasn't that hot. The website was easy to follow and book tickets. The train station was modern and lovely. ( premium lounge by the dusty road outside was a joke though). The staff wearing outfits and leading you to the train was a nice touch. All of the staff were nice. You need your passport to check in for the train. The train was modern enough. The seats were fine but a bit narrow and kinda awkward staring at a random person accross from you. Bathroom on board. No wifi on the train, only at the train station. Over all it was good. I don't understand all the bad reviews. Inca rail was perfectly fine.

They get one star for just getting me to Machu Picchu. Okay here’s the Tea 🍵 First time traveling with Inca Rail, it was highly unprofessional. I am Peruvian but grew up in the USA. I speak Spanish fluently, and so does my family. We were going, there was an incredible lack of communication from the staff, everything was chaotic and disorganized. Their marketing is very very good. It’s all a lie basically. For the 360 view, it’s giving more like 180 degrees if that. Not to mention that over half of the journey is not spent on the train, but it is spent on a bus, a bus that is subcontracted, and the driver, while I trust are professionals, are pulling dangerous stunts. Passing other cars during curves, going above the speed limit, and driving through bumps so hard you jump out of your seat. This is my 4th time going to Machu Picchu, and frankly Inca rail made this experience terrible. My partner has Crohns and they do NOT give enough time or communicate about bathroom breaks or even if there will be stops. Not accessibility friendly. They had a very cringy Inca Performance in the train where the staff dressed up. As a Peruvian, with Incan family, this was EMBARRASSING. It was in incredibly bad taste. I felt scammed for sure, and honestly I feel bad for the employees. They just care about making money. Not respecting the sacred journey. It’s a shame. All of this tourism monopoly. Machu Picchu is now just a place for white people and other tourists to do a lil tik tok dance and post it on social media. I am grateful to have been able to go 3 times before, by just renting a car. If you have the money, getting to Ollaytantambo is not hard. Don’t pay for the full thing. Do NOT do the Bimodal transport. They treat you like cattle, and you can probably Pay 20 soles to ride with cattle and it would be a better experience tbh.

The train and bus were overall a good and unique experience with beautiful scenery. Staff was very accommodating, especially when we had to reschedule our return train, they did it no problem and no extra cost. I would give 5/5, but on the bus to the train, an employee poured out a babys milk bottle. We understood no drinking or eating allowed but a babys milk bottle is unacceptable. As adults we were nervous even being on the bus after seeing that. On our return bus people were eating and drinking no problem on the bus. So not sure what that employees problem was with baby milk. I would warn parents of small children to do their research and ask questions before booking with this company.

Super easy to book. Not sure what’s up with all the bad reviews. Gorgeous views too. There was a restroom, a spot to charge my phone and they let me move seats so I wouldn’t get motion sickness. Complimentary tea and delicious cookies 🍪

I do not recommend this company. We asked them about the additional cost in case we needed to modify our bus/train tickets if anything happened, and they told us it would be 10% more, which was fine with us. They did not provide any further information. My friend and I got sick, so we asked a girl who worked there, Esperanza, to change the tickets. She told us we needed to inform her 24 hours in advance, which was never mentioned before. I had to buy another ticket for $75 USD because I couldn’t pay her the 10% fee—we are tourists and couldn’t transfer the money, and we would have had to go back to Cusco to do so. The only star is for the availability of the staff.
