Our Readers' Favorite Trains of 2023

"A Peruvian rail service that carries travelers through the Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu and offers five different onboard experiences, from the standard Voyager—featuring comfy seats and background music—to a Private option with an outdoor balcony and live music. The journey includes cultural live performances that enact the love story of the Inca warrior Ollanta and the princess Cusi Coyllur, adding immersive storytelling to the scenic itinerary." - Cassidy Grubisic

The Inca Rail luxury train was a fantastic experience overall. The train is beautifully designed, with large panoramic windows that offer breathtaking views of the Sacred Valley throughout the journey. The seats were spacious and comfortable, and the onboard atmosphere felt elegant and relaxing. The service was friendly and attentive — staff made sure we were comfortable and well taken care of. The welcome drink and gourmet meal were delicious, showcasing local flavors with a modern twist. The live music added a lovely cultural touch to the ride. The only reason I’m giving 4 instead of 5 stars is that, while the experience was very enjoyable, it didn’t feel quite as polished as some other luxury trains. There were minor delays during boarding, and the train car could use a little more soundproofing for a truly serene ride. Still, it’s an excellent way to travel to or from Machu Picchu in style and comfort. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a premium rail experience through the Andes.

Don't overpay for the premium bar and lounge class. You will not get the experience you are looking for. The "bar car" only opens up halfway through the train ride, so you don't really get to enjoy much of it. Well, that's assuming you can even find a place to sit, as the capacity in the bar car isn't enough to accommodate all the passengers who held the tickets. The live music was terribly loud and out of sync. The cocktails were mediocre. Save yourself some money and travel with Peru Rail's cheapest fare instead.

Terrible experience. Expensive. On our way back, a speaker kept telling us to wait, that we were going to board soon. We kept waiting. When the time was up, my husband approached a lady who told us that the train just left! They charged us another two tickets, they told us that basically, it was our fault. There were other 7 people with the same problem. We had previously purchased a bus with the same company. They told us that there were no more buses with them, that we had to arrange one on our own accord. Apart from the high costs, we are closed to miss our flight home!

DO NOT book here. Go to Peru Rail instead. They don’t respect the boarding time, the customer service is good before the sale, then they don’t even care about your issues during the trip. And the “show” in the train is just two people reciting poems in English, other services provide you a real show with dance and music.

Loved the train ride. Views of the river in full flood mode and the mountains in full majesty, nothin like it. This was our one-year-old's favorite part of the trip. Spacious enough he could explore and watch everything going by. He loved it.

Tragedy, they create themselves on some exclusive carrier because the trains inside are made of wood, etc. And there is no place for legs because the seats are arranged to each other. There is also no place for luggage. Tickets are very expensive as if you were at least flying a plane and the train is terribly uncomfortable driving with them is a terrible torment. Every city bus is more comfortable than this train

Chaos in booking. Why bother booking online if you still need to go and get physical tickets and stand in line? And expect to be separated if you are traveling with others. They do not take much care. Peru Rail much better

Clean and on time. If you are coming from Cusco, you need to get a bus to Ollantaytambo. The train will leave from Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu and will take about an 1.5 hours. Smooth easy ride..staff serves you food and even have craft beer on board if you wish. There is a designated space on the train with open windows for you to take pictures.
