Our Readers' Favorite Trains of 2023

"A Peruvian rail service that carries travelers through the Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu and offers five different onboard experiences, from the standard Voyager—featuring comfy seats and background music—to a Private option with an outdoor balcony and live music. The journey includes cultural live performances that enact the love story of the Inca warrior Ollanta and the princess Cusi Coyllur, adding immersive storytelling to the scenic itinerary." - Cassidy Grubisic

Way too overpriced. It's been 60€ for not even a two hour shaky ride. The scenery is nice however it's still way too expensive regarding the fact that the train stopped for around more than one hour which made me feel a little bit like traveling with the german "deutsche bahn". The traditional staging and show by the staff seems out of place and illustrates the commercialization. It felt super weird. If possible, get to Machu Picchu by hiking the salkany trek or take a cheap van from cusco to Hidroelectrica.

When you get off the train coming into Aguas Calientes. You notice that you are walking through a baazar. (Covered market). Thing is can be hard to find using Google maps when your attempting to get back to it esp if you stay over night in Aguas Calientes. So basically walk into the market all the wall towards the back and follow the wall down ... you will see the open entrance for inca rail.

The Inca Rail luxury train was a fantastic experience overall. The train is beautifully designed, with large panoramic windows that offer breathtaking views of the Sacred Valley throughout the journey. The seats were spacious and comfortable, and the onboard atmosphere felt elegant and relaxing. The service was friendly and attentive — staff made sure we were comfortable and well taken care of. The welcome drink and gourmet meal were delicious, showcasing local flavors with a modern twist. The live music added a lovely cultural touch to the ride. The only reason I’m giving 4 instead of 5 stars is that, while the experience was very enjoyable, it didn’t feel quite as polished as some other luxury trains. There were minor delays during boarding, and the train car could use a little more soundproofing for a truly serene ride. Still, it’s an excellent way to travel to or from Machu Picchu in style and comfort. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a premium rail experience through the Andes.

Don't overpay for the premium bar and lounge class. You will not get the experience you are looking for. The "bar car" only opens up halfway through the train ride, so you don't really get to enjoy much of it. Well, that's assuming you can even find a place to sit, as the capacity in the bar car isn't enough to accommodate all the passengers who held the tickets. The live music was terribly loud and out of sync. The cocktails were mediocre. Save yourself some money and travel with Peru Rail's cheapest fare instead.

Very bad experience with Inca Rail. Nobody replied to my messages all day and I couldn’t change my return train. Instead of simply giving me a seat on an earlier train, they made me wait 9 hours, while I watched trains leave half empty. In person, staff kept telling me just to wait for my scheduled train, without offering any solution. I felt completely ignored and disappointed. Definitely only 1 star.

I accidentally booked my train ticket in the wrong direction and only realized it when I got to the station. The staff were incredibly helpful and understanding — they quickly assisted me and swapped it for the next available train. Such great service made what could have been a stressful situation so much easier. Really appreciate their professionalism and kindness!

Chaos in booking. Why bother booking online if you still need to go and get physical tickets and stand in line? And expect to be separated if you are traveling with others. They do not take much care. Peru Rail much better
