The historic independence square of Quito - a must see if you're in the city. We were here on a Sunday and there were plenty of street vendors selling interesting handicrafts. We had lunch at a restaurant overlooking the square. It does get very crowded so watch your belongings, but there is quite a lot of police presence - probably because it's right in front of the presidential palace.

Independence Square or Plaza in Quito, Ecuador is an absolute *must-see*! This vibrant and historic heart of the city pulses with energy, history, and culture. The moment you step into the plaza, you're surrounded by a stunning mix of the old and the new—grand colonial buildings, charming kiosks, and the lively buzz of local life all around you. It’s the perfect place to walk, explore, and soak in the true spirit of Quito. With the metro nearby, it's easy to reach, and once you're there, you'll find endless things to see and do. From breathtaking architecture to local vendors, musicians, and people from all walks of life, the plaza is alive with color and character. If you're visiting Quito, don’t miss this incredible spot—it’s the soul of the city and an unforgettable experience!

Great place to hang out. It’s not the main square, but I feel like we saw more action here. Comedy show, speeches, performances. Lucky us! Plenty of restaurants around. #quito

My wife and I passed through here on our way to dinner at La Vida, which was excellent. The square was beautifully decorated for Christmas and was full of people enjoying the space. There was a very strong police presence to discourage any potential issues, but the whole area was perfectly safe.
