The Indian River Lagoon or IRL is a saltwater body of water that was mislabeled a "River" when it was actually a true "Lagoon" on Central Florida's east coast near Kennedy Space Center and Brevard County.
Part of the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW), the IRL is a beautiful stretch of coastal waterway spanning the entire length of the Space Coast from New Smyrna to Sebastian Inlet with Merritt Island to the east and the mainland of Florida with various towns and cities to the west. The ICW runs the entire eastern seaboard of the United States and this segment has been called the Indian River for well over a century.
There are plenty of restaurants, parks, trails and wildlife refuges to see and spend time on the shorelines or kayaking and boating too. A fishing charter is a swell way to see the lagoon and get intimate with the wetland habitat and wildlife.
