15 Best U.S. Airports for Finding Cheap Flights

"Midwest folks might want to head to Indianapolis to find the cheapest flights. Though it might be a long drive from hubs like Chicago and Detroit, Indianapolis has quite a few cheap flights on Allegiant and Southwest." - Stefanie Waldek Stefanie Waldek Stefanie Waldek is a freelance space, travel, and design journalist with expertise in aviation, meteorology, and polar regions. I arrived at 6:20am on a red eye from Seattle with 5 hours to wait until my ride arrived. Exhausted I Googled "places to rest" and discovered they have Sensory Rooms! They are beautiful and peaceful spaces, geared toward adults and children with special needs. They even have an adult sized changing table in the attached large bathroom! It has low lighting, with soothing colors and art work. I am thoroughly impressed and feel blessed to find such a quiet place to recover. Way to go, Indianapolis Airport - Thank you!

Kyle Lamoreaux

Google
This airport is gorgeous and in my top 3 cleanest airports. My favorite part of this place is the wide open spaces to walk without bumping into people. The design of this airport was well thought out. My only flaw is the Uber pickup area. It's literally a skinny sidewalk against a wall in which your trapped and can't walk around anyone without stepping into the busy road. To me it's a huge safety hazard.

George W.

Google
IND is a very nice airport. I noticed that all the elevators 🛗, escalators, and moving sidewalks were working. The baggage claim was spacious and bright. A very good food court is offered Pre-security, awesome! Post-security offers good coffee and dining 🍽 options as well and the airport interior is well lit, and up to date flight departure/arrival boards. IND is one of the better airports I've been through in quite a while. It's a great airport!

Google
Indianapolis International Airport (IND) is one of the cleanest and most organized airports I’ve visited. The layout is easy to navigate, security lines move efficiently, and staff are helpful. I appreciated the wide seating areas, charging stations, and variety of food options. It’s a calm, traveler-friendly airport with a modern design and plenty of parking. A great starting or ending point for any trip through Indiana!

David Massey

Google
Indianapolis airport was actually a really pleasant surprise. It was clean, easy to get around and just felt kind of calm in a way most airports don’t. The layout made sense right away and I didn’t feel like I had to walk a mile in every direction just to find food or a bathroom. One thing that really stood out is that it still feels like an airport not a giant shopping mall pretending to be one. You’re not bombarded with stores or weird luxury nonsense. It’s simple and efficient in the best way. TSA was shockingly fast and the agents were actually kind which is a rare thing to say out loud. Overall it was smooth and I’d fly out of Indy again without hesitation.

Hunt McDannald

Google
This is a great airport. Easy to navigate. Lots of signs. Significant amount of restaurants and retail inside and outside of security. Love the art. More cities should take their lead. Check out the dinosaur in the main atrium. Your kids will enjoy this place. They also have some lights in the ceiling when you head to baggage claim and ground transportation. They change colors. The kids loved it.

Janet Kragen

Google
Light and bright, clean, and well organized. I love that they put "people movers" all over! And I appreciated the art/poetry in the windows. Lots of variety in the food options.

Leah Criss

Google
My favorite airport out of all the ones I’ve been in. Security is efficient, the terminals easy to navigate, decent food options, and very aesthetically pleasing decor. As a basketball fan, it’s fun to see the basketball displays they sometimes put up in the Civic Plaza.
google avatar

Amber Z.

Yelp
A clean easy to navigate airport. I travel often and the layout for drop-off or pick-up is seamless. Entering the airport screening is split into two different sides of the building to make TSA screening quick and efficient. The restrooms are clean and there is plenty of seating to sit and charge or relax. If you enjoy shopping there are several options after screen and before. This goes for food options as well.
google avatar

Yelp
You could do so much worse! This airport is clean and not crowded. Post-COVID, so many airports have turned into sweaty, elbow-to-elbow feed lots. Not this one! I didn't eat, but they seemed to have a decent selection of places for food and beverage as well. One of the newer-feeling airports I've been in. Nice job Indy! (Only thing I'm not a fan of is...this is mostly a UNITED airport. Objectively the worst non-budget airline in the US)
google avatar

Sammy S.

Yelp
A 40+ minute delay as my Delta flight waited for a ground crew to arrive to let them to the gate. I keep hearing anecdotal horror stories about flights getting ground crew delays here at IND like what I just experienced. How does this even happen? And so Yelp wants me to say what could improve? HIRE SOME PEOPLE! lol
google avatar

Chris W.

Yelp
IND is a midsize airport that is very well laid out. The two terminals are connected and you can go through either security entry and get to your gate with a short walk. The TSA precheck or the regular security....both are super fast. Once your through security there isn't a lot of food options. That's the only knock I have on the airport.
google avatar

Sri R.

Yelp
Love this airport. In the entire United States in our country..this is supposed to be 5th or 6th best airport in the entire US! It's still eastern time zone. So well maintained!! Airport staff are really responsible
google avatar

Bruce F.

Yelp
Indianapolis' airport is the best at getting thru checking-in and going thru TSA. No crowds and no trams just a short walk to the terminal. What they lack in restaurant variety they make up for in accessibility.
google avatar

John R.

Yelp
Most airports have trouble getting to an average level of service. Rental car centers that seem to be an hour away from the terminal, food that is bad to horrible, service that falls into the just don't care category. Surprisingly, IND is pretty good on all counts. Though I wouldn't say it is a short walk, the rental cars are easy to get to. Security is surprisingly efficient. Food options include pretty decent choices of quality. United is still as horrible here as it is everywhere else. They seem to have a culture that goes above and beyond to deliver horrible service to even the best of locations.
google avatar

Tommy P.

Yelp
There's more to like about this airport than to dislike. Even more than that, it's a good airport. Not too large (your walk to the rental car counters is short but involves an up-over-and-down) but with plenty of vending (both before and after security) . . . and the restaurants, bars and shops are nice ones, too. Reasonably clean, also. I've yet to meet an employee of any business in the airport who was anything other than friendly and helpful. Dumb things: if you have TSA Pre, you have to check in through the A-gates to get that lane. And despite the fact that there is no real line for Pre, you have to herd through a series of corral switchbacks that adds 100 yards to your walk. And THEN you put your luggage on the belt for the X-ray/magic detector machine, zip through the scanner . . . and wait. And wait. And wait. Because every time I've been through IND, these stupid machines are backed up. And there is no place to sit and wait, so you're milling about with all the other people from TSA Pre who are waiting for their bags. And watching as your bag slowly moves through . . . and then sits there on the belt, out of reach but in plain sight. Don't be in a hurry, or you'll be irritated (and maybe late). The signage for rental car return could be better, too - if you're looking too far ahead, you may find yourself being tricked into entering the parking garage. Even if you're not, you have to watch out for being clipped by people who were . . . yikes.

Yelp
This airport is very clean and well maintained. There are several cafe and convenient store throughout the airport.
google avatar

Kerra S.

Yelp
One of the cleanest, nicest, and most enjoyable airports I've ever been in. The staff were so friendly I almost didn't even want to board my flight home. Will definitely not be against a layover/flight out of here again.
google avatar

Joe S.

Yelp
This airport has gotten better since my review 2 years ago and places are open later than they used to be (9p instead of 7p which is a big difference). However, there are still limited choices as I had to walk up and back a few times looking at menus before deciding on Shake Shack. Prices at this airport are a bit high in comparison to other airports I've been to. I paid $18 for 8 wings at one place and other stuff was priced similarly! TSA Pre-Check is still only on one side so I had to do a big loop to get through security. Luckily, terminals A and B are connected so it's just a minor inconvenience. It's also Long AF. Instead of arriving in the middle and having to walk at most, half the length, you arrive at one end and if you're gate is far, you're walking for a while. Think of it like goal posts. They do have people movers but people are still idiots and don't move out da way!
google avatar

Erin D.

Yelp
Every time we go to the Indy airport, we talk about how it's truly the best. From the friendly shuttle drivers to the relaxed and efficient security team, everyone helps to create a helpful and easy going experience. The airport features local art and local coffee and food. Everything is clean and easy to navigate. It's consistently rated as the best airport in the US and I understand why. Thanks to everyone who makes it great!
google avatar

Kandice T.

Yelp
Compared to many other U.S. airports, getting through this one quickly & efficiently is a breeze. I saw signs stating that it had been voted best for several years, and I must say that I agree. Lines are short. You never really NEED to arrive two hours early, and if you do, you'll have plenty of time for restroom breaks, a meal, and maybe even drinks. Everything is centrally located with no off-site rental car facility (like BWI in Baltimore, MD). Our people movers are in working order MOST of the time. Our security doesn't walk around with machine guns drawn (like the one in Tampa, FL). It is very easy to navigate, and most gates are a pretty short walk away, unlike Chicago's O'Hare International Airport. The food service workers at some of the restaurants aren't the most professional, but if that's the only concern we have, I think we're doing pretty well!

Yelp
The new Computed Tomography TSA scanners are incredibly slow. Even the TSA Precheck line moves at a snail's pace because the scanning of bags is so slow. I have flown out of IND probably a dozen times since the new scanners were installed and sometimes have had to wait 15 minutes for my bag because the scanners are so slow. At times more bags are pulled off to be hand-checked than are allowed to pass through, adding to the delays. On a recent trip I was standing beside another frequent traveler while we were waiting for our bags to be scanned, and she mentioned that she often flew out of JFK, which has the same type of scanners, but it is much quicker. A TSA agent overheard and said, "Well, if JFK was as busy as IND they would be slow too!!" This was hilarious because JFK is usually ranked as one of the busiest airport in the country, while IND is ranked around 50th. Often there are large groups people waiting for the bags to be screened. Locals news stations have recently reported on passenger complaints about slow security scanners here, and IND ranked 52nd out of 103 major airports in the country for the number of complaints per capita between January 2023 and January 2024. Other than the scanner issue it is nice to see that a few more restaurants are open until 9 pm. It used to be if you landed after 7 nearly everything was closed.

Yelp
We had a quick layover here on our way back from Las Vegas. Clean restrooms, friendly employees, and easy in and out.
google avatar

Maya T.

Yelp
Ok I cannot find this place even outside of the airport so it has not even created a separate thing for Tap & Pour restaurant so I'm putting it here We had plenty of time to spare before our flight which is rare for Indy haha so we stopped in and it's like your basic pub vibe. Our waitress was supper nice. I ordered the chicken ranch wrap and unfortunately did not check the contents to see that it had bacon. Easy fix, we simply asked the waitress for another wrap without bacon and she even made me shine greasy Tots. The chicken was good and the tots were crispy. Even the ranch was nice and creamy. That was a good lunch!

Yelp
This is a fantastic airport! Quick and easy security with a straightforward airport setup. Plenty of food options, large, comfy seating areas with chargers and free WiFi! It was easy to uber here, as I don't believe there is any public transit available too and from the downtown area.
google avatar

Alice C.

Yelp
What an exciting and eventful 2024 NBA All-Star weekend in Indy!! The airport is ready for the athletes, NBA Jr's, Hall of Famers, coaches, celebrities, anyone who loves hops and guests. The lobby area is set up as a basketball court along with a stage that has schedule performances; what an awesome idea to welcome all to the Indy airport! The restrooms are clean and also have free water refill stations. Many stores and quick services throughout the gates and lobby. One main restaurant is located after the Security check, and one pub is located in the main lobby. Unfortunately, the Priority Pass program is no longer participating with Indy airport. The TSA Pre check office is knowledgeable and friendly when I stopped to ask a quick question. The customer service desk is helpful too. Indy is one of my favorite airport to travel to and from!
google avatar

Shelbi G.

Yelp
Best airport in the US! IND is so clean and definitely a great airport! There are plenty of food options and it's easy to walk between the two terminals to see what's on each side. TSA & TSA pre check never seem to have super long lines and you can move through fairly quickly!
google avatar

Nicole L.

Yelp
Last few trips through this airport have been a breeze! Super friendly going through security and usually no lines during my visits. Easy pick up and drop off with rentals though that is where I have had to wait the longest.
google avatar

Polina W.

Yelp
I have flown into and out of this airport twice over the years and both times I did not have any issues. My bags are on time, and my process to/from the plane is quick. Kiosk issues are probably the biggest problem, but that's not the airport's fault, especially when there are global outages.
google avatar

Steven W.

Yelp
The Indy airport makes it very easy to get to your gate. Security is always pretty quick and I have never spend more than 15 minutes in the line. Although the airport is small and has some good options for coffee / tea and food. The airport is clean and the people are nice. A great airport experience!
google avatar

Uriel G.

Yelp
Great place, easy to navigate. Took out the priority establishment so no where to go if you have a Passport Priority anymore
google avatar

Jessica A.

Yelp
Headed back to DC. Trip to the airport was quick from downtown Indy. There were 3 people ahead of me in line at TSA pre-check, which seemed to be operating much more smoothly than when I was here last month (as many spring breakers were headed out.) made it to gate B 13 in plenty of time where there was ample seating and plenty of working outlets for charging devices.
google avatar

Beth E.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite airports. It is easy to get through security because they have some of the latest and greatest technology. The airport is clean. The bathrooms are clean with spacious stalls for those with lots of luggage. The staff working throughout the airport are friendly and helpful. There are several nice choices for eating a meal before (or after) your flight. If you need a comfy spot to sit and charge devices, they have them scattered around--both before in the food court and after security near the gates. It's easy in and out of the airport and your ride can wait in the cell lot until you call for a pickup.
google avatar

Stuart S.

Yelp
Really nice clean quaint Little airport. People were friendly everything was so convenient. Rentals were not too far away, along with a lot of choices.
google avatar

Daniel R.

Yelp
I believe "Indy" to be the gold standard of airports in America as somebody who has flown out over over 30 American airports and works in aviation for a living. It's clean, has a simple layout, plenty of amenities and dining, and most importantly has consistently quick TSA times. It is one of the easiest airports to get through in America, and if you have the choice between Ohare, midway, Cincinnati, or any other airport in the area I would strongly advise you to fly out of Indy ever time.
google avatar

Mia T.

Yelp
I often fly out of the Indy airport and it always makes me feel at home. Aside from typically fast lines through security (they now don't even ask you to take anything out of your bags!) and generally welcoming and friendly staff, there are so many little touches here that go a long way. Artwork, occasional live performances, clean and easy to navigate all help to make this airport special. I would love to see more restaurant options and international flights out of Indy but it's still my favorite airport to fly out of!
google avatar

Emil C.

Yelp
I've flown through this airport on several occasions. Once I was in town for the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon, but usually I'm here to catch a connecting flight. The concourses here are very wide so it's still easy to walk around even if everyone for any particular flight are up and crowding the gate boarding area. Recently, I was in concourse B and I found that there were plenty of decent food options when I had a couple of hours before my next flight. I stuck with the usual Starbucks which was right next to a Shake Shack.
google avatar

Van F.

Yelp
Beautiful and clean airport. Great amount of food choices before/after boarding/exiting. I don't have a lot to say, but it's amazing.
google avatar

Sumintra W.

Yelp
Easy and quick airport with two concourses A and B. Lots of restaurants to choose from once you pass TSA. Wish there was a sleep pod, AA or Southwest lounge, or some sort of massage services.
google avatar

Bryan S.

Yelp
Decent in and out of the airport. A lot of closed businesses after 9pm was unique I have flown in here quite a few times in the past. Respectfully, Bryan
google avatar

Matt H.

Yelp
Every time I travel I wonder why more airports can't be like Indy. Truly the best I've ever experienced and always a consistently good experience.
google avatar

Rod D.

Yelp
One of the nicest airports after it got remodeled. Everything is so clean and everything is well organized. All the terminals are bright and airy. Everything is so wide and so organized. You feel like you've entered an area that is very inviting and wanting to travel.
google avatar

Melissa M.

Yelp
ALWAYS clean and has cars on display. TSA moves ppl thru at a decent pace. Love the pet relief area and enjoy the variety of food spots
google avatar

Tiffany N.

Yelp
What you see is what you get with Indianapolis airport. I've flown into here a number of times in the past year and it's always a pleasant experience. Even though it's an international airport, it's on the smaller side so it makes getting in and getting out seamless. Security is usually a quick process and they have some solid food and drink options once you get through. They even have some healthy options like a market with salads and a deli but also some hearty options like Shake Shack, Sun King Brewery and Ben's Pretzels. I haven't explored Terminal A too but much Terminal B has treated me well!
google avatar

Konah W.

Yelp
The Indy Airport is by far one of the easiest airports to navigate. I never have had more than a 45 minute wait in security, even on the busiest travel days. If you do follow the 2-hour arrival rule, you'll have plenty of time to check out some of the best local restaurants we have to offer. I usually grab a world famous shrimp cocktail from Harry and Izzy's, a coffee from tinker, or a brew from Sun King. Don't miss out on the sweet creations from Just Pop In, they're the perfect gift or dessert!
google avatar

Brenda J.

Yelp
February 16-18, 2024, Indianapolis hosts the NBA All-Star game. Fans will feel welcome when they arrive; the airport is ready! With a regulation court installed in the welcome area, basketball fans will feel the love.
google avatar

Laura E.

Yelp
We like this airport because it is small and it's easy to find out where you're going, claim your baggage, etc. If prices are similar, we always choose Indianapolis airport as our top pick.
google avatar

John P.

Yelp
Love this Airport!. Big enough that it has a lot of options and small enough that it's not chaotic. Baggage claim is pretty simple and not too far away. The gates are relatively close to each other as well as to baggage claim, car rental, all that stuff. The nice open Atrium with a whole bunch of food choices and food and shopping available on both of the concourses. TSA is usually pretty quick here and the agents are friendly. In addition, they always have it decorated for whatever is going on in town when we left It was the USA swimming Olympic trials. I have seen it for the final four, Super Bowl, All-Star game. They keep it updated. Keep it looking nice. It's always pretty clean and feels safe.
google avatar

Niki B.

Yelp
Every time I go to other airports, it makes me miss the Indy airport. There are rarely any lines, the employees are always insanely friendly, and I love a good Sun King or Shapiro's pit stop before the flight. There are always seats, outlets, and just room in general to spread out before your flight. Continual applause to the Indy airport team. Y'all crush it!
google avatar

Greg W.

Yelp
IND is a mid-sized airport but by no means is it mid! Mid: Used to insult or degrade an opposing opinion, labeling it as average or poor quality. [source: Urban Dictionary] The design of the airport is quite nice for a few reasons. The layout is inviting, you drive past first the economy lot, then the park and walk, and finally the adjacent lot right outside the terminal. The options are superior to many airports and easy based on need. Not many airports afford you to park less than 300 feet from the terminal exit. The beauty doesn't end there - the multi-level entrance/exit motif lends itself to isolate the stress of an airport from the energy of comings and goings. Once inside the main portion there is dining and there is the joint of A and B where all people must flow through. The backdrop is all glass do you can watch your people fly away or land - very neat. Finally there is a small Delta lounge which is lovely. IND offers limited destinations but it's still a great place to start a journey. Final Tip: IndyGo has a bus line that picks up right outside the terminal and heads downtown via Washington Street. It is an easy way to travel if you have time for it.
google avatar

Paul G.

Yelp
What a way to end a great trip with extremely friendly encounters all throughout Indy. I guess it really doesn't matter where or when--TSA agents always seem like they're in a foul mood. Unfortunately this airport is no exception. Additionally there's only one lounge for the entire airport and you must be flying Delta to enter with your Amex Platinum. The food selection was just okay. Our Uber driver circled the airport 3 times while we waited in the cold and he blamed poor signage for the rideshare pickup area. I can't vouch for the veracity of that claim.
google avatar

Lisa L.

Yelp
This airport is pretty clean and has super helpful staff! There's art, exhibits, and numerous shopping & restaurant options. I had a good experience coming & going.
google avatar

Jayme H.

Yelp
Me giving an airport five stars? Pshhh - but seriously. I can see why this airport is so highly rated. Flying in and out for me was a breeze and when I sat down to write this review no cons came to mind. I really like how much art they had on display and how many nods to Indianapolis there are. The local shops were a joy to see, especially Tinker coffee shop which was a blessing when I headed out of town on a late afternoon. I had work to get done while I waited to board and the wifi was strong enough to keep me going. I can even confirm that the restrooms were clean as I needed to change my clothes before my flight. No one ever enjoys being at the airport, but this airport made my travel easy. Snaps to you!
google avatar

Scott M.

Yelp
As far as airports go this is a pretty good one... not the best but better than average. TSA pre-check only being on one side makes the line incredibly long and makes you wonder why you are paying for pre-check when it takes longer than the standard line.
google avatar

Ro W.

Yelp
We're flying through Delta. Our ticket said to be here early but the staff isn't here and we've been waiting for a hour.
google avatar

Vee H.

Yelp
I'm at Indianapolis International Airport, and although it's late and most shops and stores are closed, I really like this is a big beautiful airport! From what I can see the airport is very clean and there's lots of places to relax and chill while you wait for your flight. There's also lots of places to eat prior to boarding. This airport was well designed with big bold signs to point you in the right direction, weather you're heading to baggage claim, the exit or to the designated Uber/Lyft pick up area they've made it easy to get there. Even the TSA agents agents were surprisingly pleasant here in Indiana.
google avatar

Elaine F.

Yelp
I had a good experience this time with the TSA, who helped me pass through the screening process even after I had lost my wallet and ID. There is a pretty good newer restaurant on the B gate concourse called The Farmers Market. I stopped there for a wild mushroom flatbread with goat cheese, which was pretty yummy.
