There's more to like about this airport than to dislike. Even more than that, it's a good airport. Not too large (your walk to the rental car counters is short but involves an up-over-and-down) but with plenty of vending (both before and after security) . . . and the restaurants, bars and shops are nice ones, too. Reasonably clean, also. I've yet to meet an employee of any business in the airport who was anything other than friendly and helpful.
Dumb things: if you have TSA Pre, you have to check in through the A-gates to get that lane. And despite the fact that there is no real line for Pre, you have to herd through a series of corral switchbacks that adds 100 yards to your walk. And THEN you put your luggage on the belt for the X-ray/magic detector machine, zip through the scanner . . . and wait. And wait. And wait. Because every time I've been through IND, these stupid machines are backed up. And there is no place to sit and wait, so you're milling about with all the other people from TSA Pre who are waiting for their bags. And watching as your bag slowly moves through . . . and then sits there on the belt, out of reach but in plain sight.
Don't be in a hurry, or you'll be irritated (and maybe late).
The signage for rental car return could be better, too - if you're looking too far ahead, you may find yourself being tricked into entering the parking garage. Even if you're not, you have to watch out for being clipped by people who were . . . yikes.
