Visiting Valluvar Kottam was a truly enriching and unique experience during my trip to India. The monument is dedicated to the great Tamil poet and philosopher Thiruvalluvar, who is best known for authoring the Thirukkural — a timeless work consisting of 1,330 couplets (kurals) that cover profound teachings on morality, ethics, governance, and everyday life. The structure itself is built in the shape of a temple chariot, symbolizing the cultural and literary pride of Tamil Nadu. What made my visit even more meaningful was the guidance of the security officer at the site. He kindly walked us through the monument, explained the significance of Thiruvalluvar, and even recited and interpreted several of the kurals for us. His enthusiasm and knowledge gave us a much deeper appreciation of the place and its heritage. Without his explanations, I would not have fully understood the importance of this landmark. I am grateful for this experience and would recommend Valluvar Kottam to anyone visiting Chennai — not just as a tourist attraction, but as a place to connect with Tamil literature, philosophy, and history.

Newly renovated Valluvar Kottam is fabulous monument with lovely fountains and laser show. The monument consists of a decorative arch, an auditorium that can accommodate around 3,500 people, and the Kural Manimandapa, where all the 1,330 couplets from all 133 chapters of the Kural literature. The hallmark of the monument is the 39-meter-high (128-foot) stone car, a replica of the famed temple chariot of Thiruvarur. The bottom portion of the chariot features bas relief sculptures depicting all the 133 chapters of the Kural text is outstanding architecture. The construction of the Valluvar Kottam was conceived and executed by the then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu M. Karunanidhi during the 1970s. It was designed by South Indian traditional architect V. Ganapati Sthapati, who is also the architect of the Thiruvalluvar Statue at Kanyakumari. It was inaugurated in April 1976.

It's like a new, 2.0 version of Valluvar Kottam, and you can really feel a significant change. I came here as a child about 25 years ago, and back then, there were hardly any visitors and the maintenance was poor. Now, it's totally different with a fresh look that encourages more tourists and youngsters. I saw many people from other states also enjoying the place. There's a restroom, a cafe, and a small Tirukkural shop. The entire place is maintained cleanly and neatly, with security. The musical fountain and chariot laser show are beautiful to see, and you can enjoy them at no cost. Bring your relatives and friends who are visiting Chennai for sightseeing. This place is a wonderful spot to experience the Tirukkural at its best.
