Our Favorite Weird, Wild Sculpture Gardens

"When you arrive in Inhotim, you will be handed a map so you can pick your route and begin your quest. And there is much to see at this gigantic open-air contemporary art center, surrounded by 500,000 acres of botanical gardens in the Atlantic Forest of Brazil. The sight of an igloo or a floating block of concrete, a labyrinth of mirrors camouflaged in a way that butterflies bash into it, or a kaleidoscopic telescope, is part of the experience of a world-class collection of over 1,300 works of art produced from 1960 until today. A chauffeured golf cart will park by your side before you decide what to see first. You can choose to walk or to take a ride through lakes, valleys, forest areas, and gardens. Of Instituto Inhotim’s 500,000 acres of botanical gardens, about 100,000 are opened for visitation and ready to awe with an extensive collection of exotic and rare tropical species and numerous palm trees from all over the world. Away from the Brazilian urban setting, Inhotim allows time to contemplate and embrace contemporary art as one with the surrounding lush nature. The interactive works of art are impressive and mesmerizing. There is a pavilion where every object is red and red is the experience. In another pavilion, inspired by artists Hélio Oiticica and Neville D’Almeida’s Cosmococa, visitors enter rooms where they’re promised to experience the feeling of being on cocaine. In one room, Jimi Hendrix plays guitar while a pillow fight brings in chaos; another room is filled with hammocks; in the end, there is a lit indoor pool. There are 23 pavilions and permanent galleries of artists from 30 different countries. To some, the idea of building a gigantic museological complex, pavilions, and galleries with contemporary artwork on display in the open air in the middle of Brazil’s Atlantic Forest, might have sounded like a far-fetched, megalomaniac project. But to Brazilian billionaire Bernardo Paz, who planned out the construction of Instituto Inhotim in 2006, building one of the most daring, ambitious, and creative art museums in the world is not impossible. Today, Instituto Inhotim is an active nonprofit when it comes to developing educational programs, providing access to cultural assets to the community, and improving the quality of life in the region. The long-term plan is to turn the place into a destination in itself. Spas and resorts are being planned, and there are new pavilions under construction and plans to organize film festivals and events to promote environmental awareness, cultural empowerment, and diversity. In the future, Paz believes it will take about 12 days to fully take in this unique, unparalleled, sensorial, and aesthetic experience." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

World class attraction 1 hour by car from Belo Horizonte. Highly recommended and, in my opinion, hands down the best touristic attraction in the region. It's a huge botanical park dotted with very interesting (sometimes very unusual and peculiar) art galleries and installations from renowned Brazilian and international artists. Even if you're not a fan or a contemporary art connoisseur, just the nature itself will blow you away. Make sure to buy the tickets in advance (a day or two before the visit might be enough) and if possible try to visit on a weekday (Wednesdays are free which is good, but might mean longer lines). The last time I was there, it was a Sunday in between holidays, so the lines to get in and for some of the galleries were huge but moved quickly. It's possible to go and come back by Uber, but expect price surges because everybody goes and leaves at the same time. There are cheaper bus options as well, but keep in mind that if you're in a group, it might be worth renting a car or just sharing an Uber. The road to access it is not the best, but it's manageable. If money is not a problem, it's possible to stay at a great 5 star hotel inside the park. Don't expect to see everything in just one day, but if you only have one, make sure to arrive at the earliest time possible and pay for the golf cart package to speed things up (the extra fee is not that expensive). If you decide to walk everywhere, expect long distances and huge elevation differences, so dress accordingly. I've always been there during the fall or winter, so although very humid and hot (the area is part of the Atlantic rainforest), the weather was comfortable enough and there were no mosquitos. About the galleries, two different takes: study or watch videos before going to make sure you visit the ones that interest you the most in order not to waste time walking aimlessly and not miss out on the great ones; or take your time and be surprised, you do you. Some are interactive, you'll have to take your shoes off and for some others, have enclosed proper shoes to step on broken glass. There are two art installations with swimming pools and if you want, you're able to get in and swim (I guess they even offer towels and a changing area). Some other galleries might not be suitable for children due to adult themes and be careful with others with flashing lights, but everything is clearly signed and explained by the staff. The service is great, but some of the staff might not be so knowledgeable about the art and might not even be able to speak other languages. And although all the signs are in English as well, instructions given by the staff were all in Portuguese only, so beware. Hiring a guide beforehand to help and explain some of the art is great if possible, but not required at all. There are great options for food throughout the park that cater to all tastes and most food restrictions with two big self service restaurants for lunch (different price ranges) and the quality in both are very good. There are also smaller places for burgers, pizzas and a good number of coffeeshops scattered inside the park. Water fountains are plenty so bring your bottles. Bathrooms are clean and well maintained. Don't hesitate to come!

Amazing place! Exhibitions are focused on preserving our planet and humanity. Beauty of natural park flows into galleries where artist works made me think about planet, about my actions and our future. Beautiful and insightful place. I would love to come for more time, enjoying lunch at one of the cafes or restaurants and listening to sounds of nature.

Fabulous day out from the city. Amazing plants and landscaping with knowledgeable staff. The food in the Oiticicia restaurant was very nice but nothing is cheap here.

Incredible. If you like modern art I highly recommend going here. It’s great to experience the exhibits, whether they are indoors and ones that utilize the outdoor space. Inhotim is rather large, and it would be good to pay for their cart shuttle service. Especially as there are several hills to access different exhibits.

This museum is worth the trip to belo horizonte (BH) if you like contemporary art… it is a must on your world to do list. One day is not enough … spent at least 2 days. Trip from BH is 1,2-2 hours. Uber price is around 100 real one way. But direct bus is available at holiday inn savassi

Yelp
Inhotim is a world-class center for contemporary art, located about 80-90 minutes by car from Belo Horizonte. Located in beautiful surroundings with lush forest and beautiful lakes you could spend your time there just enjoying its botanical gardens! But, it is the art that will blow you away. Since there is so much space, the outdoor art works and galleries are quite spread out. Luckily there is a good map, and you can pay extra to be shuttled around. Whether you use this or decide to walk you can be sure that you won't see everything in a single day. There are some amazing works, from conceptual art and installations to career retrospectives, outstanding architecture, and spectacular commissioned works. I have been there three times now and can't wait to visit again. It is surprising to find such a high quality venue in Minas Gerais. When you're visiting Belo Horizonte make sure to put Inhotim very high on your list. By the way, you are not allowed bring drinks or food into the park and therefore you can't spread out for a nice picnic. Luckily there are some good restaurants and lanchonetes to keep your tummy satisfied.
