We've stayed at 20+ bed and breakfasts and would give this place a solid 7/10. We arrived within the 4-6pm check-in window and the owners daughter greeted us about 15 minutes after we arrived. While waiting, we found the afternoon snacks in the dining space - prepackaged peanuts, granola bars and bags of skinny pop. She took us to the English Garden Suite. It's down a sloping, slate path in the back of a carriage house that contains 3 other rooms. Would be treacherous in the winter but we had no problems. The room was spacious and smelled "clean." They use Fabuloso to clean. I know because it's very strong and I had to find a new housecleaner because it caused my family headaches. Bathroom was a disappointment. Small fiberglass shower, white and undecorated walls, builder grade sink, towel bars, etc. Zero effort to cozy it up.
We had a nice dinner nearby. The bed at night was very firm and my husband and I were stiff in the morning. The sheets were ok. There was a coverlet and a standard blanket. Nothing was luxurious, soft and inviting. The worst for me was that there was no second pillow for me. I always "hug" one on my side between my knees. There were no extra pillows, blankets, or bathrobes in the closet.
I emailed ahead of time to ensure that a gluten-free breakfast would be ok. I heard no reply but their website said they could accommodate all dietary requests. When we arrived, I told the owner's daughter and she wrote my request on a notebook in the kitchen where breakfast was prepared. Still, in the morning, a waffle with strawberries was placed in front of me. When I inquired as to whether it was gluten-free, the server said, "No, how I would I have known that?" In fairness, no one asked us when we arrived so I guess I should have remembered to tell them yet again. They quickly made another waffle that was gluten-free. It looked pretty with strawberries and a little whipped cream. We also had a small bowl of bananas, blueberries and shredded coconut to start. Coffee was delish. We both wished that some sausage or bacon had been served alongside the waffle as we were hungry within 2 hours.
All in all, this was a "fine" little get-away. But comparing it with so many other B&Bs we've stayed, we won't be back. It's the little things that really put a place over the top. Given the glowing reviews, I expected more. I now think it's just because there is a dearth of B&Bs in the near vicinity that it is so popular.
