4 Best Day Trips from Philadelphia | Condé Nast Traveler

"Set on 44 acres adjacent to Longwood Gardens, pulling up to the Inn at Whitewing Farm almost makes you feel like you're fleeing to your own country estate. Originally the home of Russell Pippen DuPont’s treasurer, Whitewing Farm’s grounds were planned by horticulturalists from Longwood Gardens, and share many of the same rare trees and perennials. But it’s not just a gardener’s paradise; it’s also a bed and breakfast with resort amenities. Besides guest rooms decorated in a classic English country style (think stripes, plaids, florals, and horses), the B&B also offers a hot, chef-prepared breakfast each morning, and puts on afternoon tea each day. There's also a fully stocked pond for catch-and-release fishing, as well as a Har-Tru clay tennis court and an outdoor swimming pool." - Nancy DePalma

Google
Lance and Sandy were gracious hosts. They have totally renovated a lovely farm. The room was spacious, bed very comfortable and bathroom very modern. The main farmhouse has a lovely living space to hang in. Lance's outstanding cooking skills were showcased in his gorgeous breakfasts he served. The location is ideal to visit so many sites close by.

Yelp
The Inn at Whitewing Farm is everything you need it to be if you're thinking about an off the grid, quiet and relaxing time. Comfort and elegance merge in each of the richly decorated rooms. I don't believe there is a bad one to be had here at the Inn, though the suites offer a tad more luxury. Your charming innkeepers are eager to please creating foods to delight the eyes and palate. Everything at Whitewing Farm is welcoming, personal and designed for ultimate in comfort. You will feel like royalty and leave refreshed. The sprawling grounds contain a pond, gazebo, tennis courts and a pool. The Haybarn is a common area that hosts a seating area with fireplace, library and wine cellar. Beautiful florals and lush greens rapture your soul as the quiet surroundings engulf you luring you away from the technology and chaos of daily life. My experience at Whitewing could not have been better, unless of course I could have stayed a few more nights and escape the reality of my life. Five full stars all the way.

Yelp
This is the BEST bed and breakfast I have ever stayed at! The owners are amazing, the farm is breathtaking. The room was beautiful and elegant. I'm upset about two things. 1. I didn't have a chance to get in the pool. (It looks so relaxing) 2. I didn't have a chance to go fishing ( but I will be back) Lol, my wife and I absolutely loved our experience and will be back. I wish I could give them 10 out of 10

Yelp
Not the best view for a place with a fancy name . For me it's about a view specially if there's only one window.

Yelp
Such a bad experience here! We made a mistake and booked one of the nights on the wrong day. 1-2 days later we called back to ask to cancel one of the nights because we realized longwood gardens wasn't open. They wouldn't allow us to cancel it and charged us a full $365 as a cancelation fee! (The full amount of the room) They offered a gift certificate after we stated we didn't want that and wanted our money back, he felt he was doing us a favor, but clearly only helping himself. After being unprofessionally greeted at our car by a golf cart, I was questioned and instructed by the owner of what food and water I was bringing to our room informing me he had stocked the B&B with sufficient amounts of both (After seeing the room it only had 2 bottles of water and no snacks) I wasn't asking or expecting anything to be there anyway but why the need to tell me what I should bring? Feeling puzzled by this we got on the golf cart which he speedily raced us around the property. It was a ridiculously bumpy ride that ended in spilled luggage which he never apologized for. He showed us the room and told us it was newly remodeled. Seemed okay at first glance. The owner made a weird comment saying if the guests beside us turn off the central air conditioning, use the window air conditioner. So my comfort and air temp depends on a stranger next door? I can't count the number of bugs I killed here. I found both dead and alive bugs in the bed sheets. So many bugs on the bathroom floor, along with large spiders, etc. Yes, I understand it's the "country" and there are bugs, but I do not appreciate bugs in my sheets! The central air conditioner stopped working, we called the front desk, he did something outside and fixed it. Finally was able to shower, quickly I might add, had maybe 7 minutes of hot water. The air conditioner went out again at 2 am. We called back and the front desk told us to turn the window air conditioner on. We found it covered in mold and we told them no we would not, obviously he didn't want to fix it at 2 am. They did come and fix it, definitely seems like it happens all the time. The room was so humid and smelled like mold and mildew even with the central air running. Upon leaving we both noticed how disgusting our belongings and ourselves smelled of mold and mildew even almost a full day later. So disheartening to have wasted almost $800 on 1 night after finally taking a vacation. I defiantly feel taken advantage of and that the owners have no interest in resolving such a horrible experience. A gift certificate isn't a solution. Who would want to return to such a horrible mess? This room was nothing like it was described online, for this price I was expecting a clean room, not to smell of mildew, or be woken up at 2 am to a broken air conditioner. And just FYI there is no WiFi or cell service here.

Yelp
This spot is conveniently located just minutes from Longwood Gardens. The family is incredibly friendly and accommodating. Beautiful carriage house (common area), pool, and pond on the property. They do have a tennis court and gazebo next to it for relaxing. Hackney room was clean, cute swan towels when we arrived. Bathroom was a tad small for my 6'3" husband to be comfortable in.

Yelp
Stayed here for 3 nights and had a fabulous stay. Unfortunately my phone crashed and didn't save the photos I took of property and room. But let me just say this is a must! We came to town to visit friends that recently moved to Pa. so we didn't have much down time. I will definitely do the private dinner next trip in! Beautiful property, gorgeous rooms, amazing hosts and delicious breakfasts!

Yelp
Property was lovely! It's April, we came for our 6 year wedding anniversary. Trees were in bloom. We picked this place because of the location, right next to Longwood Gardens. Staff were amazing. Very sweet people, they took the time to chat us up. We booked one of the suites. Wish it had a soaking tub, but that's not way I'm giving it 4 stars. The bed killed my back. The bed sheets were not the soft. I ended up in the floor for a couple hours not the best place to be on our anniversary. But I might be a stickler for beds and sheets. They had plenty of pillows to pick from. Anyhow breakfast was good. I'm vegan so I never expect much but my husband liked his and he had some fresh cookies for a snack later in the day. It was nice they had coffee and snacks out. Would I come back? Yes but with my own bed sheets and maybe a bed topper :p

Yelp
If you're visiting Longwood Gardens, you should definitely stay at this inn! The innkeeper, Lance, is so kind and accommodating. Our room, the English Garden suite, was beautiful and clean with a comfortable mattress. We enjoyed sitting out on the patio of our suite and enjoying the beautiful plants and flowers. We decided to get a picnic and we were both blown away! The food was incredible, we especially loved our sandwiches and the pasta salad. We took our picnic to a gorgeous spot on the property. We appreciated all the sweet little touches throughout the property and with the food. You have free reign to explore the property and it is well worth it. We wished we could have stayed another day and will definitely be back! If you're visiting Longwood Gardens, you should definitely stay at this inn! Yelp
We've stayed at 20+ bed and breakfasts and would give this place a solid 7/10. We arrived within the 4-6pm check-in window and the owners daughter greeted us about 15 minutes after we arrived. While waiting, we found the afternoon snacks in the dining space - prepackaged peanuts, granola bars and bags of skinny pop. She took us to the English Garden Suite. It's down a sloping, slate path in the back of a carriage house that contains 3 other rooms. Would be treacherous in the winter but we had no problems. The room was spacious and smelled "clean." They use Fabuloso to clean. I know because it's very strong and I had to find a new housecleaner because it caused my family headaches. Bathroom was a disappointment. Small fiberglass shower, white and undecorated walls, builder grade sink, towel bars, etc. Zero effort to cozy it up. We had a nice dinner nearby. The bed at night was very firm and my husband and I were stiff in the morning. The sheets were ok. There was a coverlet and a standard blanket. Nothing was luxurious, soft and inviting. The worst for me was that there was no second pillow for me. I always "hug" one on my side between my knees. There were no extra pillows, blankets, or bathrobes in the closet. I emailed ahead of time to ensure that a gluten-free breakfast would be ok. I heard no reply but their website said they could accommodate all dietary requests. When we arrived, I told the owner's daughter and she wrote my request on a notebook in the kitchen where breakfast was prepared. Still, in the morning, a waffle with strawberries was placed in front of me. When I inquired as to whether it was gluten-free, the server said, "No, how I would I have known that?" In fairness, no one asked us when we arrived so I guess I should have remembered to tell them yet again. They quickly made another waffle that was gluten-free. It looked pretty with strawberries and a little whipped cream. We also had a small bowl of bananas, blueberries and shredded coconut to start. Coffee was delish. We both wished that some sausage or bacon had been served alongside the waffle as we were hungry within 2 hours. All in all, this was a "fine" little get-away. But comparing it with so many other B&Bs we've stayed, we won't be back. It's the little things that really put a place over the top. Given the glowing reviews, I expected more. I now think it's just because there is a dearth of B&Bs in the near vicinity that it is so popular.

Yelp
Amazing weekend with friends at Whitewing. Quaint, comfortable, clean and incredible ambiance and hospitality. Six of us stayed in different beds and everyone was so comfortable all night! The hosts go above and beyond to create a special experience. Can't wait to return!

Yelp
I rarely write reviews and I almost never give 5 stars but this visit was so outstanding that I really need to share. From the moment we entered the grounds and were greeted by Lance, the owner of the farm, we felt like we were at home. He showed us around the dining hall, which is beautifully appointed in "country comfort." Lots of snacks always available and lots of coffee, as well as a large book with information about local restaurants as well as some other attractions. He pointed out the pool and the lake, and the tennis court. Then he sent us off to our room which was absolutely charming and spotless. Excellent closet and drawer space. We spent that evening in the town of West Chester, which is charming and much larger than we expected. Breakfast the next morning was served by Sandy, Lance's wife and their children and grandchildren. Yogurt parfait followed by a very full plate of eggs, sausage, toast and fruit. The next morning was pancakes, fruit and syrup. Lance and Sandy will make you food during the day if you want and I'm sure that will be equally delicious. All in all, I have to say that they were among the most friendly hosts we have ever encountered during many travels. They also play amazing music while the whole family is cooking. Yes, this is repeated from a review I did on Google. I'm happy to review them anywhere.

Yelp
Excellent location, comfortable room, friendly hosts and perfect location to visit Longwood Gardens.

Yelp
My husband and I had a recent beautiful stay at the Inn at Whitewing Farm, the perfect place to be during a quarantine (or whenever)! Each room on the property has individual access, which is unique for a bed & breakfast. Our room was bright and cozy, quite large and had a nice fireplace. The grounds are stunning, we enjoyed daily walks checking out the pond, pool and mature trees, as well as playing daily tennis. Lance cooked up a delicious homemade breakfast every morning, the lemon ricotta pancakes and waffles were a highlight. We appreciated the convenient coffee station. Both Lance and his wife Sandy do everything to make you feel relaxed and at home, the perfect vacation! Plenty of restaurants nearby to check out (they also keep a great list and provide recommendations!) as well as Longwood Gardens and vineyards just down the street. There are several quaint spots to also have your own picnic/table at the Inn, helpful during covid. We were impressed with all that is being done to maintain a clean and safe environment. We cannot wait to come back!

Yelp
Charming and immaculate inn. We stayed in the Clydesdale suite. Comfortable beds and fire place which was perfect on the cold rainy nights we had. Lance and Sandy couldn't be nicer . Breakfasts were wonderful and we had the extra charcuterie which had everything thing imaginable and was delicious. We will be repeat guests

Yelp
My family was celebrating our Mom and Dad's 90th birthdays. A very special occassion! We spent a fabulous weekend at The Inn at Whitewing Farm. Of course we made time to enjoy Longwood Gardens as well. Each room was spacious, had individual ammenities, a fireplace or an outdoor or indoor sitting area. Such a relaxing environment. Beds were extremely comfortable, rooms were decorated so tastefully. Our host and hostess, Lance and Sandy, were so friendly, made us feel welcome from our first "Hello". My family plans to return in late spring or summer to enjoy the outdoors (pool, beautiful pond, flower gardens, and tennis courts). Thank you, Lance and Sandy, for making our special weekend extra memorable.

Yelp
Shortly after we arrived to our room, we had issues with the room. The room was too small and not up to our standards. When we voiced our concerns to the front desk, we found out that there was a better available room. We agreed to move to that room, but we were told that it would cost us an extra $70-$80. Given that we were only staying here for one night. we decided to try to make the best of a bad situation and not pay the additional cost since it felt that we were being fleeced. Very quickly we found that there were other issues with the room. The shower was too small for an average six foot male to use, the water from the faucet kept running, the air conditioner was too loud, and the bed was uncomfortable.

Yelp
This bed and breakfast could have been great because the property and the staff were very nice as other reviewers noted. Unfortunately, we stayed in a two room cottage (Fats Waller and Fanny Waller) that was far from the main building. You could not drive to the cottage or park near the cottage which also had no internet or cell service. To get to the main building for a cup of morning coffee we had a long uphill climb. One of the members of our group could not make the climb and had to call to be picked up in a golf cart which is also how we had to get our luggage up and down since driving to our cottage was not an option.
