Retracing the History of Freetown Through the Life and Legacy of Edna Lewis

"The morning sun hadn’t yet broached the treetops that edged the sloping, frost-kissed grounds of the Inn at Willow Grove, where I was staying, when a knock on my door signaled the arrival of local coffee brewed in a French press and a paper bag of warm beignets."

"Set in a circa-1778 Federalist manor at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Inn at Willow Grove sends couples back to nightly canapés and dinner for two at a softly lit gastropub before they retreat to cream-colored guestrooms, suites, or private cottages (many with gas fireplaces) and await house-made beignet delivery—features that helped it receive the most perfect-score votes for romance." - Peter Schlesinger Peter Schlesinger Peter Schlesinger is a writer, editor, and digital content specialist who is passionate about travel and cross-cultural experiences. I ordered a gift certificate as a gift for my niece on 27 Dec. Their website said I could choose either a gift certificate delivered by mail or electronically. But nowhere did the website allow me to specify email delivery address. I received a status email that only said “order confirmed”. And today, 7 Jan, it still doesn’t show that it shipped. I called the Inn at Willow Grove front desk. I was less than thrilled with the lack of customer empathy or service. They asked me to wait til week’s end to check on delivery. It’s going to Charlottesville VA, a 45 min trip, via USPS. If it’s not delivered THEN they will email it to me. Why not just fulfill my request to email me the certificate? Then I can send it to her myself…including in a nice card or ecard? This is NOT the level of service we enjoyed in years past when staying at Inn at Willow Grove or dining at Vintage restaurant there. I can no longer recommend this establishment to friends and family. It’s a shame.

EDIT: I expected this response from the owner. I’ve attached a copy of my confirmation email from November 19th, and as shown, there is no mention of gratuity anywhere. Additionally, you were not part of the conversation I had with Nikki, so your response is based solely on her account, which is fine, but it does mean you do not have all the facts. I informed Nikki that I intended to keep my appointment but wanted to express my disappointment with the lack of transparency. Her response was, “Why would you want to still come in if you are upset?” For clarity, I would not have been penalized for canceling, as this conversation occurred yesterday and my appointment was more than 48 hours away. I stand by my review and would encourage not responding to customer feedback without full context. We booked a couples massage at The Inn at Willow for December 21. This massage was to celebrate our anniversary. Today, we received a confirmation email that included additional information that was never disclosed at the time of booking, most notably, a mandatory 23% gratuity. I am not a cheap tipper by any means, but automatic gratuities are becoming excessive. Tips are meant to be based on the quality of service and experience, not automatically applied simply because you are an establishment. Had this mandatory gratuity been disclosed during booking, I would not have scheduled the appointment. I spoke with the director, Nikki, who explained that they “always do this” due to high traffic. That is not the issue. The issue is lack of transparency. Mandatory fees should be clearly disclosed upfront, not introduced after the appointment has already been booked. To make matters worse, Nikki then canceled my appointment, stating that if I was already dissatisfied, she didn’t understand why I would want to come. This left me without an appointment during a holiday week for something I had booked over a month ago. This was supposed to be a special and relaxing experience for our anniversary and it turned into something stressful. This was incredibly unprofessional and disappointing. Poor communication, lack of transparency, and even worse customer service. I would not recommend this establishment and will not be returning.

Had the pleasure to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary at the Inn At Willow Grove last week. We live in Northern Virginia and have been to a lot of the "romantic weekend getaway places" around here, but IAWG is truly a cut above. We stayed in the Butler's Cottage which was wonderful, very nicely appointed and really private. Daily housekeeping and nightly turndown service which we really appreciated. The grounds and common areas were beautiful and immaculate. Staff was equally amazing, Michele helped me plan the whole thing and Ray came outside and greeted us upon our (early!) arrival. The spa was fantastic. We did the couples massage and had a private suite, while Amy, Eve & Nikki took amazing care of us and made sure that the prosecco never stopped flowing! Now the Vintage restaurant really sealed the deal, and capped off an amazing trip. I was kind of concerned about eating in the same place two nights in a row, but am so glad we did. The first night we just ordered off of the menu and the food was delicious and the service flawless. Katherine, Anessa, & Kaley were great. But the second night for the actual date of our anniversary they created a special 4 course menu complete with wine pairings for us. This was so much fun. Wednesday is the sommelier/manager and she is a superstar. She greeted us as soon as we walked in and treated us like royalty. Every course was delicious and the wines were phenomenal. She was so, so great and even gave us a hug when we were leaving. Like I said before, we've been to a lot of properties like this in Virginia, but this is the only one we are already planning a return trip to. Thanks for the hospitality!!

My husband and I stayed here the night before and night of our wedding in the Butler's cottage, along with my mother-in-law in the Weaver's cottage and my parents in the Schoolhouse cottage. Ray remembered us from when we stayed and got engaged last year, and that level of hospitality was such a nice touch. Not only did he help with our bags, but he along with the front staff gave us a nice bottle of champagne to celebrate our marriage - in addition to the glasses we received upon arrival. We had dinner at the Vintage the night of the wedding in a private room, and they had custom menus for my husband and I and also gave us a complimentary champagne toast to celebrate. Dinner was delicious, as always. All of the Inn's staff was incredibly attentive and they provided such a curated stay for not only my husband and I, but our parents as well. Our parents gushed over the coziness of their cottages and how well decorated they were, as well as how thoughtful and personable the staff was- and how great the coffee and beignet delivery to the cottages was. We're looking forward to staying at the Inn for many more milestones and anniversaries to come!

Our wedding at The Inn at Willow Grove was nothing short of unforgettable. The venue itself is stunning—rich with history, charm, and a sense of timelessness that you simply can’t find anywhere else. But for my wife and me, it was even more than that. This place has woven itself into the story of our relationship (it’s where we had our first date, got engaged, and celebrated our son’s 1st birthday), and celebrating our wedding here felt like coming full circle. From the moment we made the decision to return home to the Inn to celebrate with our closest family and friends, we breathed a sigh of relief, and a large part of the wedding stress was removed. The entire team, especially the Director of Private Events, Catherine, and Food and Beverage Director, Wednesday, went above and beyond to make the planning process easy—even as we planned from five states away. The day was seamless and joyful. Every detail was handled with such care that we were able to be fully present with our family, friends, and each other. Staying in the cottages at the Inn made the experience even more magical. They’re charming and comfortable—exactly what you want during such a special weekend. The guest services staff was incredible, delivering warm beignets and French press coffee to us each morning and offering thoughtful turndown service in the evenings (the jam-filled macadamia nut chocolate cups were amazing). These small touches added such warmth and hospitality that we felt genuinely cared for throughout our stay-the epitome of southern hospitality. In hustle and bustle of wedding activities, sipping coffee together in rocking chairs on the porch of the Schoolhouse cottage added a layer of calm and is one of our favorite memories. The historic grounds provided the most beautiful backdrop for our ceremony and photos—every corner feels like it carries its own story, and now, one of those stories is ours. Walking down the aisle and saying our vows, enjoying an awesome cocktail hour and hors d’oeuvres, sharing a wonderful meal, and dancing the night away in a place that already meant so much to us made the day even more meaningful. We left with full hearts and memories we’ll treasure for a lifetime, as did our family and friends. Our guests also loved the Mill House Spa and pool. Several family members treated themselves to massages and raved about the experience — the perfect way to unwind before the big day. Others enjoyed lounging by the pool. Knowing our loved ones were being cared for added even more joy to the weekend. If you’re looking for a venue that brings together beauty, history, a truly special atmosphere, and the most thoughtful and hospitable team, The Inn at Willow Grove is incomparable. We couldn’t imagine having started this new chapter anywhere else. The only problem—we didn’t want to leave. We’d like to extend a special thanks to David and Charlene Scibal, Matt, Wednesday, Catherine, Michele, Lisa, Andrew, Heather, Nikki, Ray, Kelsie, Michelle, Mrs. Barbara, and every single staff member that went above and beyond for us. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

A brilliant experience from beginning to end. The staff was welcoming and helpful from the moment we arrived and did not cease to be punctual, welcoming, and helpful throughout our stay. The room appointments were lovely, services such as turndown were always on time and discrete, you felt pampered from start to finish. The rooms provide a remarkable amount of privacy and porches look out on beautiful grounds and landscaping. There was even the friendliest old cat wandering around and she was kind enough to give us some attention as well. The spa is very nicely appointed and spa staff are very good. My massage was expertly done and I left relieved of all stress. All in all, we were sorry to have to go.

Google
A perfect, stunning, and accommodating location for a wedding. My best friend got married here in June. The entire bridal party had the weekend to stay in the cabins on the property and each one was beautiful. The staff were so friendly and did their absolute best to make sure it was an amazing weekend. Every part of the Inn at Willow Grove is beautiful. I can’t recommend this place enough for a wedding. Check out the wedding pictures attached! There are very close hotels to stay in for wedding guests as well.

Google
Staff warm and welcoming. The Smokhouse cabin was a perfect place to stay for a couple. Away from the inn and others. Shielded by plants in front blocking the view to the inn. So privacy was perfect. Dinner was excellent, service excellent, very attentive to our needs. Enjoyed the meal and ate the dessert before I could snap pic. Had morning coffee brought to house. Very good French pressed coffee and beignets. Will come back again.

Yelp
We came here for our anniversary and we had an incredible experience! We were greeted by the hostess, who knew it was our anniversary as we checked in. They had menus with our names and gave us some to take with us as a present! We ordered the Brussel Caesar salad, the filet mignon, and the bison. Everything was amazing! The server was extremely friendly and brought us chocolate ice cream as a surprise dessert with a happy anniversary printed chocolate. We would definitely be back!

Yelp
We went to the restaurant for Thanksgiving dinner. It was a fixed price menu for $95. It was worth every penny. The atmosphere was elegant, the service was excellent, but they lost a star because the desserts weren't up to par with the rest of the meal. They offered carrot cake, a dark chocolate something or other and a cheese board. The cheese was good but the carrot cake was dry and didn't have traditional cream cheese frosting. The dark chocolate was not dark and tasted like cool whip. Obviously they didn't make the desserts.

Yelp
Yesterday we went to the spa then the pub for burgers and drinks. WELL IT WAS THE BEST BURGER WE'VE HAD IN YEARS! Maybe it was the fantastic and luxurious spa experiences! ‍All in all do not hesitate to go and enjoy this lovely establishment! The setting is stunning as well. Highly recommend. We would love to stay overnight but it is extraordinarily pricey as we would want spa treatments and dinner too. A fairly priced package deal would be nice to offer folks.

Yelp
Had an amazing dinner with the best of friends! Service was awesome, atmosphere relaxing and food was delicious. Can't wait to visit again soon!

Yelp
We just completed another fabulous stay at the Inn at Willow Grove. This is one of our most favorite places to stay hands down. From the impeccable accommodations to the wonderfully kind staff you will not be disappointed. We always visit the spa & are treated to the best massages. Nikki the spa director & Brittney always make sure you will have a relaxing time! We try & visit any time we can.

Yelp
The Inn at Willow Grove has wonderful food and is a beautiful historic place. They don't treat their employees very well. The chairs are dirty. Some of the employees just sit around on their phones while dirt piles up. The waterfall has created mold on chairs. And needs to be fixed. It's one of the only places I can go to get good cheese, so I suggest eating at the bar. The communication between the staff in different parts of the organization leaves a lot to be desired. Management seems to be very condescending to the staff, based on my experiences there. It seems kind of obvious that they can't get staff to work there based on the attitude of management. So they default to high school kids that don't really want to work

William P.

Yelp
All employees were professional & courteous. And very attentive to our possible needs. Thank you!

Yelp
Stunning grounds, great service, amazing food! The cottages are cozy with an old timey but modern feeling. The bathroom was gorgeous with heated floors. Dinner was absolutely delicious - one of the best meals I've ever had. Every employee we encountered was friendly and happy to help.

Yelp
What a weekend! We got us a facial and a massage, we stayed the night and have dinner in the restaurant, the only thing I can say was that the service that we received was impeccable. I definitely recommend this place it's pricey but you pay for what you get for. Keep up the great work team! I will definitely be back.

Yelp
We had a gift certificate given to us which would cover 2 nights at the Inn At Willow Grove. When we confirmed dates with the Inn for our stay 3 months in advance, they immediately charged us for one night's stay on our credit card. We couldn't understand that since they already had $750 to cover 2 nights and that was the duration of our stay. That was a $750 gift certificate plus $350+ in advance for the first night. At that point we were charged over $1100 before we even settled in. The second night of our stay $350+ was again charged to our account. We ate dinner at the restaurant, $200+ The servers were beyond EXCELLENT! Not so much for the entrees that we ordered. The servers did totally recognize my spouse's birthday and made it a memorable evening We have never received our refund although after multiple calls to the Inn, they insist that it is the fault of our credit card company. The credit card company has no record of the Inn's refund to us. So we are out approximately $500+ with no recourse except to wait and see if our credit card company will help us in this matter after 30 days has elapsed. We believe that if the Inn refunded our money to our credit card account, it will show up eventually. In reality though, we shouldn't have had to pay so much in advance to qualify for a refund. My suggestion is to make sure when you check out, on your last day, to examine your bill before you leave the premises of the Inn, and if you have questions, submit them at that time. Make sure that you understand the charges on your account. FYI-those beignets arrived in a greasy brown paper bag. Coffee was brought with the beignets, but we had ordered tea. The delivery person wasn't happy that she had to go back for the tea. For us, there are just too many consistently wonderful destinations to visit to consider returning to the Inn At Willow Grove. These are only OUR thoughts about this property.

Susan O.

Yelp
Our family of 7 arrived at 2:00 for Mother's Day brunch. We waited over an hour for any food at all to be served and that amounted to all Danish pastries. We waited another 3/4 of an hour for the first course. There was no coffee offered and the wait staff appeared to care less. The food was great but we were starving and the meal took close to 3 hours. We took dessert to go. We will certainly not return

Yelp
A couple friends and I ate here in between wineries. I loved the outdoor seating. There was shade, greenery, and a water feature. The ambiance was perfect. Along with this, the service at the restaurant was top notch. We ordered some white wine...just to add to the continued wine tour. I ordered crab. While the dish was nice. The portion was rather disappointing with no sides. I ended up having to order a side of fries. Don't get me wrong the dish was great: flavorful and accompanied with crunchy vegetables which juxtaposed the soft crab. I would have liked an included side for the price but it is what it is. We ended the meal with dessert and cappuccinos. I drink quite a bit of coffee and I was quite happy with this restaurant's ability to craft a robust yet creamy cap. We enjoyed our experience here. Big plus...fine dining that allows a well behaved pup. My dog accompanied us and they provided him with his own water bowl.

Yelp
My girl friend and I chose the inn for a weekend getaway without the husbands, kids or dogs. We love our stay so much, we haven't left and we're already talking about our next trip here. Michelle at the front desk is lovely. She took care of every detail. Ray was a personable bellhop who immediately made us feel welcome. We booked a car service for a wine tour with Central Virginia Wine Tours. We had so much much with Steven. The beignets and coffee at breakfast were an indulgent treat. The turn-down service in the evening was also nice. Chamomile tea? Yes, thank you. We had the best night's sleep. For this mom, I couldn't have wished for more! Finally, the salt water pool was heavenly. We ordered poolside drinks from Lily who provided cheery, excellent service. We will definitely visit again!

Yelp
Saturday night we had made reservations group of 6 . Never felt this welcomed at a fine dining restaurant. We had s nice room six of were seated . The staff was very friendly . Ordered drinks my husband ordered Jin Clark drink . So good . We all had a sip . Our appetizer we ordered pork belly . Portion was generous. We shared the dish . Quality of food is very good . For dinner I ordered scallops . Nicely plated very picturesque and soft and tasty scallops . My husband ordered steak and fritters . Steak was very high end meat and again well made . Fritters were crunchy and topped with cheese . I couldn't stop eating . My friend ordered crab cake for appetizer. The crab cake itself can be a meal . For dessert we shared the cheese cake not too dense perfect . A must visit next time we are in that area . The staff took good care of us never rushed us to finish our food . There was a good amount of breaks between appetizers and entree and desserts . We were there from 6:30 left 9:30 pm .

Yelp
My fiancé always finds the best places. This was a wonderful surprise on Sunday night, Memorial Day weekend. A wonderful escape from crazy Washington DC and the traffic in Northern Virginia. Why did we love this special place? -anytime reception gives you complimentary glasses of Prosecco...gets me every time! Check-in was efficient and friendly. -incredible place we had-large porch with chairs and comfortable seating overlooking the beautiful grounds. -Bellman expertly took care of our bags & described all the amenities. -L'OccitAne toiletries. Need I say more? -heated tile floor in the bathroom. Yay! -large soaking tub. Great place for me to drink our champagne while I relaxed. -first year, from what we were told, the pool, spa & fitness center. Salt water. Incredibly refreshing. Great lounge chairs. Delicious little trail mix with M&Ms too. Free. -turn down service with slippers. A touch so often forgotten now. -my Amazing Fiance made reservations at their restaurant on property which was wonderful. A three minute walk from our room. -my fiancé had provided information in advance about my vegetarian status -I do eat fish though. imagine my surprise when each of us received an amuse and were told it was tuna served on top of a purée. My fiancé ate his first thank goodness because it was actually BEEF!! I have not eaten meat for 40 years. I sure didn't want to start now. We informed our server. She apologized and a manager came over as well and apologized. I never did get an Amuse with tuna though, which was kind of surprising. -food was expertly prepared and quite delicious. I wanted one of their specialty Bacardi drinks but they were out of the purée so I settled for a white wine by the glass. -Schrader wines available and even a T6! If you ever want to taste heaven, drink one of these wines. We didn't tonight but oh...the temptation! -complimentary coffee and orange juice next morning along with the signature homemade biscuits with powdered sugar served in an adorable brown paper bag. There were at least six of these little pieces of joy in the bag. Surely too many. Nope. I ate FOUR of them!! What a treat. We look forward to returning.

Yelp
Stayed there last weekend. It was.... fine. Nice setting. Good ambience. Nearby vineyards are wonderful. But it's not worth the price, honestly. Also, the food is pretty mediocre at the restaurant and the bill for two was astronomical. Do NOT eat there if you can avoid it. The staff was friendly but non responsive at times. And when we showed up they encouraged us to book a massage while declining to tell us it was non refundable. Be AWARE. When we had to cancel because one of our kids got sick they refused to give us any of the money back (we only asked for a portion). I get it. It's non-refundable. But the receptionist basically told me to kick sand when I asked for her understanding. Feels like a place that advertises itself as a beacon of hospitality could have actually shown a bit more.

Yelp
A great place. Terrific service! The staff goes out of their way to make you happy! The morning coffee and beignets that are delivered to your room are delicious. Wait to you see the butler Jeeves! Only problem are the hangers in the closet. You can't take them off the bar! It makes it very difficult hanging up clothes. The Inn's restaurant Vintage is very good as well. Terrific service there too!

Yelp
Went to a Sunday brunch here recently and I have to say this is a challenging review. The place is gorgeous, clean and looks like a wonderful place to stay. So I'm basing this review solely on the dining experience. The service and cleanliness were top notch, and there's an extra star on this review for it. The menu items were awesome sounding and the presentation was beautifully artistic. Creative really. However, the flavors and temperature weren't right. A surprise appetizer of a bite sized portion of beef, with chimichurri and pickled onions was presented and almost tasteless. I had shrimp and grits. The grits were watery and bland. The shrimp was overcooked and the entire dish was lukewarm. We were also served the French toast brick, which was actually a baguette dipped in eggs and had a nice generous serving of mixed berry compote and whipped cream. I noticed the "toast" was difficult to eat having the crispy exterior crust and a-nearly raw interior. Shame on me for not bringing this to the server's attention I suppose.... The tab for three was $116 before the tip and did not not include alcohol. We did have dessert; however, the execution just wasn't worth the price. The area we were seated in was an enclosed narrow space and with three out of four tables seated there, it was uncomfortably noisy. At one point a server left an exterior door to the space open to let an older woman and her family inside. I don't mind her consideration for the family; however the door being left open was unnecessary and the cold blast in December was just one more thing to make me ready to leave. I'd come back to try one of the rooms, I just won't be back to eat.

Yelp
What an awesome discovery The Inn At Willow Grove Restaurant is!! I love love love the ambiance and every morsel of the appetizer and our entree's were just superb! My dessert was okay... I like the fried pies at another of the chef's restaurants better. I absolutely cannot wait to take friends and return. I also want to check out the spa and the Inn itself.

Claire F.

Yelp
Reviewing the spa only.. and I never leave reviews.. but over the top wowed by the service. It's a beautiful cozy place and the staff was so welcoming, and services were amazing! I will 100% be back.

Yelp
This was our second experience at the vintage restaurant here at the inn at Willow Grove. Everything about this experience is exceptional. The location, the architecture, and the atmosphere are outstanding. The staff provides among the best service we have ever had at any dining establishment. When you combine that with excellent food served at the perfect temperature in the right tempo and quiet, effortless attention to detail, you have the best dining experience you can get. We will be back.

Yelp
My husband and I dined at Vintage, the inn's restaurant. When we went it was 'Gourmet Tapas Night,' held every Wednesday. Since I'm so indecisive, we decided to order all 15 :P The 'Tempura-fried shrimp and asparagus, lump crab, petite greens, white miso glaze' was nice and crispy, and my favorite was the asparagus; the 'Crab cake, garlic corn cookie, creamed corn' was nicely deep-fried and well-seasoned; the 'Soft polenta, roasted forest mushrooms, grilled zucchini' was like a little porridge on your plate; the 'Tossed baby spinach, orzo pasta, capers, Holland tomatoes, toasted pine nuts, parmesan cheese, blond balsamic vinaigrette' was fresh, and I loved the the added orzo pasta touch; 'Arugula, frisse, pomegranate, spiced pecans, fried okra, crispy parmesan, sweet beet vinaigrette' was also a nice and fresh salad, and I dug those spicy pecans; the 'Truffed mac n' cheese, petite greens, ham and smoked chili drop biscuit' - this was just okay; 'Crab Mephistophales in potato skin, roasted corn, bechamel, egg, chopped parsley' - this was my absolute favorite, with the nice little crab meat being stuffed in a potato; loved the cream sauce that enveloped it; 'Lac Majune: Baked pita roll with ground pork, tomatoes, garlic, oregano, lemon, creamy cucumber and yogurt sauce, crumbled feta' - this was okay, but I thought there was too much bread; 'Halibut taco, jicima slaw, cilantro adobo, ancho aioli, dried corn' - the adobo sauce was pretty darn tasty, and was necessary for the taco!; 'Apple cider-brined and corriander-seared Atlantic salmon, celery risotto, baby spinach, mascarpone, dried apple;' 'Cast iron-seared strip loin, baked and smashed parsley potatoes, sea salt, French bean, demi glace' - nice and juicy with a side of crispy beans; 'Seared Ahi tuna, white bean and goat cheese mash, grilled radicchio, balsamic onion salad;' 'Roasted pork tenderloin, root vegetable puree, charred brussel sprouts, brown butter, hot scotch demi' - I liked the brussel sprouts as it was nicely charred; 'Seared duck breast, pepper-crusted butternut squash, sauteed rapini, vanilla bean and pecan essence,' and the 'Vegetarian "State Fare" with Twin Oaks tofu corndog, spaghetti squash, potato funnel cake, sauteed spinach' - the corn dog was cute, as it was a mini tofu dog; however, I wasn't much of a fan of the taste. For dessert, we had the 'Pear Brown Betty, creme fraiche ice cream, clear caramel' and the 'Creme Brulee o' the Day' (which consisted of milk chocolate chunks within the brulee) - the pears were nice and soft, and it seemed like an 'upscale' version of an oatmeal with fruit; the creme brulee was nice, but it was a little difficult to cut the solid chunks of the chocolate bar within; this came with a side of raspberry puree. We were also served complimentary tray of desserts with a nice crispy chocolate chip cookie, a coffee cake, and a scoop of rum raisin ice cream (this was heavily doused with rum). It was safe to say that we left extra stuffed, and the overall experience was a nice one - the food was tasty, and my husband actually ordered another round of the Strip Loin and the Crab Cake! The inn itself is beautiful, and the waitstaff were very pleasant and extremely nice. Mr. Carlos, the manager, came by to see if everything was going well, and he was really sweet. A nice restaurant to stop by for dinner if you're in the Orange area. +'Gourmet Tapas Night' on Wednesdays

Yelp
Enjoyed our Christmas Eve dinner at the Willow Grove. A few points to ponder: - the menu was available in full - the bar ROCKED in ambiance - our table of five had two servers in a private room - Amy was AMAZING. Worked Christmas Eve dealing with us? :) - the food was amazing. - it wasn't cheap as you get what you pay for - enough said - Amy was very well versed on the menu and history of the Willow Grove Inn super knowledgable and savvy. Ask me anything you want - we loved our experience.

Yelp
My wedding was by far the best day of my life and I owe it all to the Inn at Willow Grove and their wonderful wedding coordinator Gabrielle. Everything was perfect and I really couldn't be happier. The grounds are beautiful, the food is always spectacular, and Gabrielle did an amazing job. She made sure everything was taken care of for my big day and really took the stress off my hands. All of my friends and family have been raving about the wedding since! Thank you for the wedding of my dreams- I really couldn't ask for a more perfect day.

Yelp
My sister and I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in Ruckersville, Virginia because we planned on going to Massanutten Ski Resort. In the room there was this picturesque book about cool places to visit in Virginia. I had come upon a beautiful photo and description of this place and knew we had to try the restaurant because of the menu. My goodness were we impressed! I had the Australian venison, au gratin spinach, and fingerling potatoes. I had two appetizers. The crab cake and the duck confit. I was enthralled! We were served homemade rolls too. A milk roll and a jalapeño roll with fresh local butter and honey. For dessert I ordered the house made strawberry mint sorbet. It's the best sorbet I've ever had. Our server was Ms. Ashely Greene and she was the biggest treat of all. What a remarkable server. I walked around the plantation mansion and decided to book a stay there when they offer specials. The place was established in 1778 and was owned by a Mr. Joseph Clark. In approximately 2008 a Ms. Michelle Sigler bought the property with her husband and put 10 million dollars into the renovations. Ms. Sigler is a Chef from New Orleans and was also an art gallery owner and her pieces are on display in the restaurant. I am truly amazed with her artistic gifts because I thought this place was designed by an interior decorator but Ms. Sigler did everything herself! A Chef named Jason Daniels did the present menu. The menu does change. I hope after reading this review ya'll will visit this very charming, quaint plantation that is a registered historical site in Virginia. We will be returning in the fall!

Yelp
Horrible experience for my daughter ' wedding. Event coordinator is very rude, condescending and unprofessional. I missed half of my daughter's reception because of her inability to handle a situation. She also fabricates the truth and tried to cover up her incompetence with numerous inconsistent stories. Moreover, they are very unresponsive . I have been trying to get in touch with the s General Manager and apparently he does not wish to address my concerns.

Yelp
This Hotel/restaurant that was built in the 1700s was absolutely beautiful. We came here for a special event and had such a delicious dinner. The BLT chicken breast stuffed with couscous topped with hollandaise sauce was so delicious. And the chocolate cake was out of this world. We will definitely be back for a date night.

Yelp
Terrible service!!! The location is gorgeous, but when you have owners who treat guests horribly and lie over and over.....its just not worth it. We Were forced to order in advance our food because they have limited Room service during the pandemic. We ordered a week in advance explaining that our situation was we were having a very important business dinner so the timing of the food was essential. They delivered the food when we were not in our cottage when we got back only half of the food was delivered leaving off all of the appetizers and salads. Because of the pandemic no one was on property so we had to call them on a cell phone and we were told that all of the kitchen staff was gone so they were really sorry but there wasn't anything that they could do. We forced them into making their kitchen staff come back and serve us the rest of our food and they profusely apologized and said they would obviously not charge us. We never signed the Room service slip and gave them authorization to actually charge us yet they left the amount of a $186 on our bill when we questioned it at check out they said that they would obviously remove it from the bell and credit it back to us, which they in turn never did. When questioned about it via text message yesterday they ignored us and this morning we got a response that said that they were only going to credit us a $100 because the cold food was all they forgot. This is completely contrary to what we were told that the time which was they would not charge us at all which clearly they shouldn't charge us at all being that they completely ruined our business dinner. $2600 that we spent at this location And this is how we get treated, Guess they really don't need money from customers if this is the way that they're going to treat them, if you don't care how you're treated and you just intrested in a nice place in a nice location this place is great I might also add that dirty dishes were left in our Room for 3 days despite consistently asking every day they be removed..... Really the whole experience was very badd.

Yelp
I booked this place to celebrate my parents' wedding anniversary due to the rave reviews. However, I wanted to alert potential customers of my experience. 1. Prior to the arrival, I called the Inn TWICE to confirm that all expenses (including dinner) on this trip would be charged to MY credit card. I asked the Inn to not request payment information at all from my parents since this was an anniversary gift. However, the staff at the restaurant proceeded to ask how they would pay. When my father declined the charges be charged to the room, they accepted his credit card as payment. Needless to say, I was not pleased. I made it a point to alert them to not for payment and yet, they still did. 2. My parents were given a plate of three cookies in their room for their anniversary which was a nice touch. However, after they returned from dinner, there were only two cookies left and my parents did not consume any. Fundamentally, this issue is not about the cookies (we can very easily buy our own cookies), but it is an issue about the honesty and work ethics of the people who work in the rooms. If the cookie was eaten, it should be replaced. If the cookie fell on the floor, it should be replaced. I informed Michele Sigler (manager) of both of these issues. She was very apologetic but it ended there. I was not offered compensation of any kind for all of the extra time I had to devote to deal with this issue. When I finally asked about compensation, she finally offered. It was too little too late. It took several days, but finally she was able to remove the charges from my parents credit card and charge my credit card instead. I would have expected an Inn of this caliber to know how to handle customer service better, but clearly I was wrong. Please be aware if you have special requests during your stay -- they may not be able to do it well, even though they are a small Inn.

Yelp
We attended a wedding at the Inn. What a beautiful venue! The grounds were beautifully designed and maintained. Wandering about was a joy. The night before the wedding we joined the family and others who had traveled from a distance for a post rehearsal gathering and we attended the wedding, dinner and reception. In all instances staff was exceptional, friendly, knowledgeable, unobtrusive when necessary and readily available when needed. The wedding meal was absolutely excellent! The reception in the Barn following the dinner was equally well managed. Those who stayed at the Inn and cottages highly praised the accommodations. Altogether a magical weekend!

Yelp
Everything about this place, from the grounds to the employees, was perfection. I was beyond impressed with the service, especially from Wednesday (restaurant manager) and Greg (server). Everyone was extremely friendly and accomodating. The entire place is stunning and every detail has been thought out down to L'Occitane en Provence amenities in each bathroom. The food was also great and the complimentary beignets and coffee in the morning were a great touch. I cannot recommend this inn enough.

Yelp
We were a party of 4. The food service was the worst I've experienced in years. Our appetizers arrived one hour after ordering. The entrees arrived 45 minutes later. After ordering we were later told that one of the entree items was not available and a substitute (filet mignon) would be arriving instead. When our entrees finally arrived, the filet mignon was not a filet but a mass of fat and gristle...the knife would not cut through the "filet" and the meal was returned. Another entree was not desired. Three folks enjoyed a nice meal while one did not. The one did not want to wait another hour or more for a single entree. Had the manager offered to provide one of our mid-priced bottles of wines as complimentary this review would likely not be published. Instead, we received an apology, an excuse that they only had two cooks and they were busier than expected. A simple Happy Anniversary desert was brought to the table with a small scoop of sherbet and a small scoop of ice cream. Thanks for nothing! If you're seeking this kind of restaurant environment in the Northern Virginia area, there are much better options.

Yelp
Beautiful place, tasty food. Service ranges from negligent to dismissive. At brunch, a succession of young women announced that they would "help serve us". The wait between soup and main course was 45 minutes by the clock; one refill on water, none on bread. Wednesday Samson, manager, dismissed a deaf patron's request to turn the music down with, "It's on an iPod, and we can't control the volume," a curious statement to make, since everyone knows that iPods have volume control.

Yelp
Vintage Restaurant is beautiful and an intimate location for a celebration. Tapas Wednesdays is a great way to sample the variety of flavors on this very creative menu. A true Fine Dining experience in the heart of Virginia.

Yelp
The atmosphere is lovely. When we arrived at the restaurant there was a group of women celebrating a birthday and looked like they were having great fun. However, the rest of the lunch left something to be desired. We asked to split a crab cake and mussels. The waiter didn't make us feel like they wanted to accommodate the request. The other two girls acted like they were afraid of their own shadow. The mussels were served without any means of serving. When my friend voiced her displeasure, the staff fell all over themselves after it was really too late. They were very nice in offering complimentary desert, which I will say, was the best part of the meal. If the food was better, I'd consider giving it a second chance. But, unfortunately, there are too many other places to try.

Yelp
My review has two parts. First I will be reviewing the inn and second I will be reviewing the restaurant Vintage. Part 1- The Inn We stayed two nights in the suite and I appreciate the decor and design of the room. I believe this was the smallest room, but it was fine. The four piece washroom consisted of marble floors and a marble shower. The heated towel rack and floors were a nice touch. The mattress was very soft, and there were two TVs, one I the sitting room and one in the bedroom. We ordered the chocolate covered strawberries and cider for our arrival. They were highly generous and gave us near twenty strawberries, all perfectly coated with a touch of gold on each. In the morning we were treated to the beignets with coffee. My mother's family is from Louisiana, so I feel I am a fair judge. They were very good and the staff made sure to ask what type of French pressed coffee we would prefer. This is especially crucial for my husband and I as we take it blonde and mild. We had a pleasant stay, but I have a few suggestions for the staff. I think it would be a positive thing if there was a bottle opener and luggage rack left in the room, as we had to ask for these two items. Also, filing the ice bucket at turn down would be a nice touch. The bathroom door in the suite sticks and needs to be planed on top, as I got stuck in it and my husband had to force the door open. Lastly, I would encourage that there always be someone at the front desk. We were instructed to call the front with the time that we wanted our coffee service. The night before we called six to seven times with no answer at the main line. We did not get anyone that night and called in the morning to request the service. Overall, this was a relaxing weekend and we enjoyed out stay. By the way, the dessert at turn down was really something special. Part 2- Vintage My husband and I ate here for dinner, brunch, as well as in the pub. I will say that the staff really is willing to meet every request regardless of how small. When the waiter approached us for our drink order I asked if they had a blender, when he said no because the noise offended people, I congenially said I had thought so and asked him what they could do that was similar to a pina colada, as that was our favorite drink. 5 minutes later two pina coladas were brought to our table. Apparently, they had tried to crush ice by hand and found they did not like the texture of the ice, so they went into a closet with a blender that they pulled out from storage and ground ice to give us our favorite drink. That is dedication. :) The food was prepared well and the selections did have a wide variety. The service was nice, though at times I could tell they were busy and we waited a tad longer. I had fish tacos with sea bass for one meal, gulf shrimp over arugula for another, and watermelon and jicama salad at brunch. My husband usually selected the meat and potatoes option. Overall, the service was great and the food was nicely prepared. My only suggestion is that their menu was not entirely clear on some items. My husband order one dish that he thought was hot "steak and fries," but was surprised to find out that it was cold (intentionally) and rare. Not at all what he had expected or what the menu led us to assume. I would recommend both the Inn as well as the restaurant. Enjoy!

Yelp
We got married at The Inn at Willow Grove in July 2017. The moment you step onto the property, you see how beautiful the yellow historic house is and how well maintained the grounds are. Flowers everywhere! Beautiful picturesque backdrops at every angle make for great wedding photos. We ultimately chose to pick The Inn at Willow Grove for a variety reasons: excellent food, gorgeous ceremony garden site, excellent rain plan backup, "the pub" for an on property after party, and "the ruins" which is a stone wall tented area for dancing after dinner. The Inn's coordinator, Gabrielle, is amazing! She was a pleasure to work with. Easy to talk to, always quick to respond to emails, and excellent day of coordinator for our wedding (we did not hire a wedding planner). Our wedding ran very smoothly thanks to her! For our wedding weekend, we loved how we were able to rent out the entire property to our wedding guests. The Inn felt like our historic oasis for our special day. Our vendors loved working with the Inn. We could have not picked a better venue for our wedding! Highly recommend. Thank you Inn at Willow Grove!

Yelp
Outstanding all the way around... Fantastic ambiance in the dining area, bar and upstairs. Service was perfect and very professional. If it's available the Venison is the best I've ever had. We had a dinner for our firm here and I don't think I've ever been cared for so well by the staff of any prior dining experience. The drinks were all mixed perfectly and served quickly.. The location, ground and hotel are perfect for a visit. We'll be back!

Yelp
We stayed over Valentine's Day this year and had an amazing time! The venue is absolutely beautiful and very romantic. We stayed in the Butler's Cottage, and there were roses and chocolates when we arrived. We had a five course meal at the Vintage restaurant, and service was fantastic. The food was amazing! We will definitely be going back!

Yelp
Went to a wedding here a few weeks back. The wedding venue is beautiful and all of our friends that stayed at the inn said the accommodations were lovely- although very expensive. The wedding had okay service from the servers- I experienced a number of bar tenders that seemed annoyed to be working a wedding or annoyed that I wanted a drink? The dinner we got was very tasty and probably some of the best wedding food I have had. Overall- a beautiful location with some hiccups in service that will hopefully be ironed out so that the price does not seem so steep!

Yelp
We did not stay in the main house or the boutique cottages, but rather the "cottages" about 100 yards across the parking lot from the main building. In reality, these are triplexes, or pentaplexes, if you count the two rooms below, as these 2 buildings are built into the side of a hill. You begin in a hallway, from which you enter one of 3 rooms on the main level. Though the view is of an expansive lawn backed by trees, the near-constant buzz of steady traffic on nearby Route 15 renders quiet use of the private porches impossible. As to cleanliness, at $338/night, we were surprised to find small stains on the carpet and the bed sheets, along with several holes in the bottom sheet. The porch chairs were ringed in mold or mildew and apparently had not been cleaned in some time. Also, the window curtain is not a blackout curtain, so the direct morning sun brightens the room considerably. Bathroom suggestion: add one or two wall hooks, perhaps on the back of the door and adjacent to the shower door, so clothing and towels are easy to reach. The solo hook away from the shower and over six feet off the floor is inadequate. Speaking of storing clothes, is it necessary to provide only closet hangars that cannot be removed? Attempting to hang clothes - especially while navigating the sizable refrigerator in the closet - is unnecessarily difficult. Consider switching to "Wooden Anti-Theft Hangers" if thievery is that much of an issue. Finally, staff ignore "Do Not Disturb" signs when delivering morning coffee at the pre-arranged time. Instead of leaving it at the door or on the nearby table, they banged on the door on 2 out of 3 mornings. Inasmuch as guests know delivery times in advance, there is no need to disturb all 3 rooms on the hall.

Yelp
My husband and I received a gift certificate as a wedding gift. Our room was absolutely amazing and the staff was so kind. My only negative would be the food, the restaurant was beautiful and we loved siting at the bar and having a couple drinks but when it came time to be seated at our table our food ended up being very salty and not worth the price. Overall we had an amazing time and I would definitely go back!

Yelp
Very expensive and not good, over salted, too much food, lower the processed serve normal portions. Our population already eats way too much. And the ice cream wasn't ice cream some mealy granular doughy cold pudding!!

Yelp
We had dinner at the Vintage restaurant, we did not stay at the Inn. The location and estate are gorgeous. The staff is very friendly and attentive. Our favorite dishes were the cheese plate (the Bermuda triangle cheese was the best imo, the home made dipping sauces and pita bread were delicious) and the scallops (buttery and perfectly cooked, served with cheese grits). They have a good cocktail menu too. The white sangria was the perfect summer drink.

Yelp
Had a fabulous weekend at the Inn at Willow Grove. The staff was so friendly and took care of our every need. The coffee and beignets in the morning are to die for. Vintage restaurant has the most amazing food especially the truffle Mac and cheese. The Inn at Willow Grove is exceptional and I can't wait to go back!

Yelp
We decided to give the restaurant at The Inn at Willow Grove (Vintage) a second chance, as our first visit was less than positive (food and service), but the spa was wonderful. We had made a reservation in advance, but upon arrival, we were told no tables were available despite the fact that we could see about a third of the restaurant empty. We had to wait 45 minutes before finally being sat in the banquet section and not the regular restaurant. During this time several people who were obviously known by the manager arrived and were sat in the regular restaurant. We felt that management does not care about out of town visitors due to the way they dismissed our concerns, and the restaurant staff seemed very unhappy generally based on our observations of them while we waited at the bar. Unfortunately for us, the second time was not the charm for us at Vintage, and we won't be back. We really don't think the management cares if we don't return, however. Although our second visit to the spa was again excellent, the restaurant experience was very poor. Save your time and money, and find another weekend destination unless you are only interested in the spa. Next time we will keep driving from Richmond until we reach The Homestead.

Yelp
During a recent visit to the newly restored Inn at Willow Grove, my guest and I found our expectations dashed by an unfortunate number of management and culinary gaffes. On arrival, we were kept waiting in the restaurant reception area for several minutes while the staff scurried around us with no apparent understanding of how to acknowledge our reservation. Finally, a person appeared and said, " We're just the owners, we don't know what we're doing." Sadly, this pronouncement became prophetic for the rest of the evening. Twice we were told that a specific person would seat us. Twice that individual failed to materialize. Finally, a third person took us to our table, which was located directly under a loudspeaker blaring show tunes and Tom Jones selections from the 1970s. Our table was also located adjacent to a side door that let in blasts of cold air as curious guests wandered in and out. After fifteen minutes, we were still waiting to find out who would be taking our order. Throughout the meal, the wait staff remained in a perpetual state of confusion regarding their jobs, not knowing if we had received a course, or which course was being served to whom. One bright spot occurred, however, when the wine server knew how to properly open our bottle of champagne. The first course shrimp arrived rubbery and tepid. The second course risotto was so over-salted that it was inedible, and the delicately seasoned timbale made no culinary connection with the lamb whatsoever. While it is not unusual for a new establishment to undergo a period of adjustment, it is also difficult for patrons to have their evening spoiled due to both lackluster service and cuisine while paying a premium price for it.
