Canada’s Most Charming Hotels for Winter Stays - AFAR

"The western territory of Yukon, which is larger than California, has more moose than people. You couldn’t ask for a better guide than born-and-raised local Carson Schiffkorn, who opened Inn on the Lake, a chic log cabin, in 1996 in Marsh Lake, a landscape of beaches and woods. Through the inn, you can book a four-day dog-sledding adventure through the boreal forest; tool around vast white plains on a snowmobile; or cut through feet of ice to fish for trout in Marsh Lake. Bonus: You’re likely to get to glimpse at the northern lights throughout your trip, since this part of Yukon has nearly no light pollution. Inn on the Lake from $180" - Michael Kaminer

If you're into Whitehorse for a couple of days, this is the place to stay. Right on a lake and if you get one of the private cabins, you can share the space with your family and friends. The cabins are completly self sufficient. You can order the set course dinner -- really delicious and gourmet quality with locally sourced ingredients. The buffet breakfast is good too. The staff are really friendly and helpful.

What an amazing day, my partner, and I had with our guide for a snowmobile tour. Our guide was incredibly friendly and accommodating. He made the whole experience over the top for us. We highly recommend booking the snowmobile tour and staying here! We will definitely be back!

We arrived late and left very early, so we were not able to take advantage of all the Inn on the Lake has to offer. The surroundings and view are beautiful. We stayed in the Presidential Suite, which was less than I would have expected for the price of the rooms. The bathroom was awkward. It had two showers, only one of which had shower gel, shampoo, and conditioner. There was no bar soap or hand soap for the teeny-tiny pedestal sink. The stopper was missing, so any items dropped into the sink would be lost down the drain. There was no place to set any toiletries or dopp kit. No hand lotion was provided. There was no coffee maker in the room, which every hotel provides nowadays. Even some complimentary bottled water would have been nice. The bedrooms were very light, even with pull down pleated shades. I get that this is the Yukon, but there is such a thing as blackout drapes, which would have helped block out the light at 11 p.m.

My fiancee and I stayed here in late October 2024 as part of the Northern Lights Autumn Package offered by the inn. Everything about our stay here was fantastic! The staff was friendly and provided us with very good service. The meals, while slightly small in portion size in my opinion, were all incredibly delicious. The meals are served at a large community table with all the other guests, which we liked, as it enabled us to talk with fellow guests who were visiting from all over the world. We enjoyed the quiet, peaceful setting of the inn away from the city and the back porch which overlooks Lake Marsh. We stayed in the Executive Jacuzzi Suite, which is alone on the second level of the inn, and therefore felt more private and quiet to us. While our bathroom was an average size, the room itself was quite spacious and also included a small private deck that looked out on the front of the property in the north direction. Overall, we very much enjoyed our time here and would be happy to stay here again if we ever visited the Whitehorse area in the future. We would certainly recommend this inn to everyone.

It was an incredibly amazing experience at the Sun Cottage! Inside was very clean and warm enough, It was really helpful that seasonings and dishes were provided. Although it was a 10-15 minute drive from the main entrance, it was absolutely worth it. Unfortunately, we didn’t catch the Aurora this time, but we were treated to a beautiful sunrise by the lake. The dinner was excellent, and we had a fantastic time playing in the snow by the lake. We’re definitely coming back soon and can’t wait for our next visit!

Rooms fine, staff friendly. Actually located half an hour’s drive from Whitehorse. Meals mediocre at best, actually physically inedible (not exaggerating!) at worst, and insanely overpriced even compared to local restaurants. Laughably microscopic portion sizes, unimaginatively and/or ineptly prepared by young staffers who appear to have zero culinary training. Had it been possible to send a meal back, my traveling companion and I would have sent one dinner back — only the second time in my life, and a first for him, since we are NOT picky eaters. Has less of the feel of “owner/operator inn” than I expected, and more a feeling of “inn on autopilot staffed by 20-something temp workers who are doing the best they can with inadequate support and budgets.” Overall a bit of a disappointment, and staffed in such a way that there’s no way to register that disappointment with the nearly-invisible owner… you’d have to talk to the same people whose performance was inadequate, which is uncomfortable for most guests. (Even the emails appear to be handled by the young staffers…. like I said, management is on autopilot, which is why I’m resorting to posting a review here).

First class accommodation, setting and staff! We arrived late and skipped dinner - what a mistake! Had we known, we would have skipped Whitehorse and arrived earlier. The meal that the staff cooked and served looked amazing and smelt great. Sam took time to show us around the lodge and also helped with our camera settings for the Northern lights. We used the honesty bar and sat on the rear deck in the evening sun overlooking the lake - magical. Many of the guests had travelled from far (Germany, Australia & China to name a few). The atmosphere at the lodge was so relaxing and friendly and we all shared stories and waited for the lights to appear. I listened to the loons on the lake and watched the Northern Lights on the rear deck until 2am - an experience that I will not forget. This was the highlight of our Alaska/Yukon trip - next time (there will be a next time) - we will stay 2 nights minimum. We left early and was assisted by a young chap from Osaka who was preparing what looked like a delicious breakfast.

We were getting to the end of an alcan driving day when we saw a sign for this facility. Our travel luck was great because not only was it a beautiful facility it had a room available and they offered us meals even though we arrived at almost 5. They prepared a wonderful meal, gave us a great wine recommendation and did it all while hosting a bus full of folks in the large room downstairs. Flawless service. Delicious food and a beautiful location overlooking Marsh Lake. The Inn on the Lake is an example of why my wife and I enjoy exploring new places.

Yelp
Stayed here for a few days in mid-July whilst on a roadtrip around Yukon and Alaska. The place wasn't that bad with a great view and a nice, homely feel. However, I was with a party of 3 in total and the room we were assigned wasn't very large at all. The funny thing was that in this tiny space there was a bathroom (with a heating lamp - good for winter I suppose) but no sink! Instead it was halfway across the room in a dingy corner!! The beds were okay but the mattresses were slightly uncomfortable and quite small. The room having said that was quite clean but the decorator suffered a duck fetish. The outside views of the lake from the balcony (although amazing) were slightly mired by the debris under the balcony including a rather lonely looking hot-tub and some various parts missing from automobiles. I think the snow must do the job in winter by covering it all up! The food was also overpriced as we had to pay $14.50 per/person, per/day for breakfast that was self serve! I feel the owner has a trapped audience as the nearest restaurants were 45minutes away in Whitehorse!! Therefore, the money paid for the supposed breakfast bought us some Rice Krispies, some watered down orange juice (which became apple juice after one day as the OJ was nowhere to be found...) and some sad looking continental meats which were recycled over several days. Oh and don't forget the quiches?!? However, having said all that, I would imagine that the Inn on the Lake would be really beautiful during winter with the log-cabinesque feel really making it special and, all the different activities which somewhat lacked during summer months. I think that the Inn on the Lake has unfortunately had its hay-day...

Yelp
I don't give out many bad reviews, but I need to let you know about this one. It is a tough one for me but it's personal. Part of our family was recently transferred by the US military and the route took us through this part of Canada. We were fortunate enough to make reservations at what looked online like a beautiful "Hotel with a Restaurant, pet and kid friendly" Upon arrival we found this was at best a "Bed and Breakfast" in a beautiful lakeside home with bedrooms for rent. I think the owner was as surprised as we were when we all piled out of two vehicles and a trailer weary from a long day on the Alcan. We went in to "Check-in" and were met by who we assume was the "Chef" at the house who asked if we would be having dinner with them and when we responded no he said "Good". Wasn't sure what to think of that. There was just an uncomfortableness about the place. Over the next half hour while we found out this was no place for our kids, grandkids or pets, my son in law tried to cancel our reservations. Well ...... this is where I'm torn. There was a no cancellation policy which meant no refund at all. No consideration. Just no. While I understand he has every right to adhere strictly to his policies, I was surprised there was no consideration at all. Now mind you this is not anywhere near another place to stay in the winter and in the Yukon. Another two and a half hours to the next town where we found a room. Please don't misunderstand that I am admitting that we were responsible for getting all the information before making the reservations. I think that this type of establishment may do some further vetting of who is making reservations to assure they know exactly what they are getting.

Yelp
We stayed one night as we traveled from the Yukon thru British Columbia. Our room was upstairs and was quite comfortable. We opted for the dinner and breakfast. Both were delicious and we thought fairly priced. The morning and evening staff were very friendly and helpful.

Yelp
The wifi sucks. Also, not very clean. Wasn't impressed with the staff either. Not worth the price of the stay. Pick somewhere else.
