The Inn on the Square has an excellent location, rustic charm, and a cozy atmosphere that reflects the character of a seaside village. The bed was comfortable and the onsite restaurant, Persy’s Place, offered good food and attentive service.
That being said, the overall experience fell short of expectations due to management and staffing issues. With only three housekeepers for 75 rooms, many guests had to wait until 7 PM for check-in because rooms were not ready. During my two-night stay, my room was not cleaned on the second day and I had to go to the pool area to get fresh towels since there were no replacements provided. Toiletries such as soap were also missing.
Basic services were inconsistent. On the first morning, there was no hot water at 7 AM. When I asked at the front desk at 8:30 AM, I was told the water heater had just been turned on and to wait 15 minutes. The front desk staff seemed unprepared to handle the volume of guest complaints, which created added frustration.
The hotel describes itself as rustic and charming, but rustic should not mean neglected. I noticed black caulking in the tub, no handicap safety handles (only a sign warning guests to “be careful” getting in and out), cracked light switches, and dirty carpet. Even the restaurant, while enjoyable, served food on chipped plates. These details are not acceptable in hospitality.
This property is managed by the Newport Hotel Group, and it feels like there is a serious lack of oversight. I would encourage management to spend time staying at the property themselves to see firsthand the improvements needed. With its charm and location, this hotel has great potential, but better staffing, upkeep, and attention to detail are necessary to deliver the quality experience guests expect.
