How I Used Hotel and Credit Card Points to Book a Two-Month Stay in Madrid | Condé Nast Traveler

"Using a hefty stash of IHG One Rewards points, I took advantage of a recent promotion offering a 20 percent discount on award redemptions. For around 30,000 points per night, I stayed at the InterContinental Madrid, a luxury hotel on the city’s esteemed Paseo de la Castellana."

Dejauira Rojas was wonderful in the Intercontinental Club. She greeted us aa.m.and p.m. with a beautiful smile. She was the most attentive server I’ve ever had— even discreetly setting a tissue box next to spouses after a small allergy sneeze. She remembered I drink almond milk and had a cappuccino for me every morning. it for me each day! She consistently refilled water, asked what else we wanted,,etc. . She truly made the stay perfect for us. My husband and joined the silver ambassador level with points since to was informed via phone I that would give us access to the international club lounge. However, when we arrived,,the front desk informed us we would need to pay 75 euros per day for that. We did that and on the last day, when we went to the 5-7 happy hour they had run out of scotch. We asked for some and was told they didn’t have any. I’m not sure why they could t go go down one level to the bar and get a bottle, since we paid the extra money to have access to breakfast and snacks/ happy hour. (Note:this was a night there a different staff than the other days and not Miss Rojas). If it wasn’t for Miss Rojas, this hotel wouldn’t have gotten a good review.

I’ve been a customer of this hotel for more than 10 years, and have been always very well looked after by all of its employees. On my last visit I noticed new faces. Several employees have retired and are enjoying their well earned pension. Special thanks on this ocassion to Susana, Inma and Deyanira at the Club. Also to all at the check-in desk: friendly and efficient. To the bellboys and to Carlos and Alejandro at the hotel entrance. And to the General Manager, Giuseppe, who is always reachable when doing his hotel rounds. Thanks to all!

A wonderful experience from the moment we walked through the door. The staff is friendly professional and helpful. Our spacious room was everything you would expect from a luxury hotel. The bed was comfortable. The bathroom well appointed. The Intercontinental Club was an added bonus that we very much enjoyed during our stay. I highly recommend this hotel if you are in Madrid.

I stayed in the Intercontinental Madrid at the end of September. |The hotel is super well located on Paseo de la Castellana, walking distance from a business district and points of interest in the city. |The neighborhood is full of great restaurants, bars, and clubs. |The room was nice, premium as expected, and I loved the touch from the room service personnel, writing a note leaving the name of the person who made the room that day. |That’s personal touch!||I also loved the fact that when I arrived to the reception, give that I am a Platinum IHG member, I was given a voucher for a drink at the bar. It is a small gesture, but one that matters for people who travel for business frequently. Later that week I enjoyed a “cańita and patatas fritas” thinking: “that’s a personal touch!

The location is not super close to the main area with the museums and stuff so unless youre happy for a long walk you need to take a cab but the hotel ks top notch. Breakfast buffet is fab, hotel is luxurious and the staff are great. Pillows and bed sooo confortable

Intercontinental Hotel Madrid was built in 1900 as the Palace of the Dukedom of Aliaga, designed by architect Eugenio Jiménez Correa. The building was transformed into the Intercontinental Hotel Madrid in 1953 and celebrated the 70th anniversary in 2023. ||Booking arrangement: Through the IHG and multiple travel websites||Location and description:|------- Hotel is located about 12.2 km (7.5 mi) from the airport and about 3.1 km (1.9 mi) from attractions like Museo Nacional del Prado (Prado Museum) . If you drive, (or taxi or Uber), then the time of the drive is about 9-15 min to the locations mentioned. The hotel is surrounded by many restaurants. Located within walking distance of 30 -45 min of most major attractions and 5-10 min of many restaurants (including at least 2 Michelin star restaurants) , Intercontinental Hotel Madrid is a great hotel to stay at. The hotel is part of the IHG group if you want to earn hotel points. The lounge has a hot breakfast, afternoon tea and "light" dinner (Enough to get you full if you have to attend a concert or evening show. You can also eat a few bites to tie you over for your big dinner later). Rooms are very comfortable. Staff are friendly and very helpful. ||The hotel has a Sunday brunch from 1 pm to 4 pm which is terrific and over the top. Think too much food to eat with live music. I took only 1 bite or the smallest portion I can get and could barely eat half of the food available. There is free champagne, white wine, red wine, soda and coffee accompanying the buffet. Definitely worth a try if you have no plans on a Sunday or want to take a break in the afternoon. Make sure you skip breakfast. I recommend skipping dinner the night before also. ||If you have club lounge access in your reservation, please check in at the Intercontinental lounge on the 2nd floor (floor 1 in Europe since the first floor is consider floor zero). ||Rooms have classical decor with flat screen televisions. Google
Unbelievable hotel experience. I arrived off a red eye for a business trip and found out I was upgraded to the royal suite. The service was impeccable, the room helped us close new partners for our business and the staff was incredibly proactive and detail oriented. I've stayed in 5 star hotels all around the world and can say this was one of the best experiences I've ever had

Google
Wonderful experience for our first trip to Spain! Hotel is located in a lovely neighborhood within walking distance to wonderful restaurants. Excellent service by all staff we encountered. Love the traditional vibe of this hotel, and will absolutely stay here when we return to Madrid. Taxis readily available to take you anywhere you need to go, and they are reasonable as well.

Yelp
I am writing this at 3am as it's the last drop for me having a hard time sleeping here, the bed is hard and it's not for 2 people, it's a bit bigger than a twin bed. Started with us having to change rooms upon arrival from a long flight because the bath tub didn't work properly. It wasn't an easy process since they tried to convince us to "just take showers instead". Er... no. We are tired and sick and we paid for a room with a working tub. Nobody offered to carry our bags from the start and they tried their best not change our room but we stood our ground. In the new room the bath tub also doesn't work properly but whatever we were able to make it work manually in order to have a bath full of water without leaking. The bathroom has no towel warmer, the bath is super slippery and dangerous I almost slipped twice even tho I was using the safety mat provided by the hotel which poorly fits the tub. Ours is a very outdated room and it's honestly the WORST bed I've ever tried to sleep in my life, my husband and I are not big people! We are tall but not wide, we can't barely fit in the bed and it's hard like a table!! Tho the service was great, the food at the bar was not good, nothing we ordered tasted fresh, even tho we ordered local dishes, it just doesn't feel like a 5 star hotel at all here. I stayed at intercontinental hotel in Porto march of this year and the experience was completely different. I'm so disappointed and feel like I would have had better sleep, saved my $ had a more comfortable stay at a Hilton or even a Marriot courtyard but now it's too late and we have to suck it up because we only have a little over a couple more days here in Europe. My advice: don't stay here!

Yelp
This hotel is beautiful and the staff could not have done more for us. The rooms were spotless and well appointed. Anything you needed was in the room. I truly loved the club. It was so nice to have a place to go and relax. Can't wait to come back here. The food and drinks were also really great. We were also given great places to see and places to eat.

Yelp
I really enjoyed my stay at this hotel. The breakfast buffet included with the room reservation is one of the best breakfast buffets I have had. There is so much food, not a typical buffet. There are churros, Chinese churros, omelets, scrambled eggs, cheese, deli meats, regular sausage, blood sausage, four types of juice, countless pieces of fruit, etc. I could not even sample everything. The staff is friendly and efficient. For example, when I was checking out, by the time I was fully checked out, a taxi was already waiting for me at the front door and the driver knew the information for my airline and terminal! This is phenomenal service. The standard rooms are on the smaller side, but they are clean. The beds are comfortable and the pillows are fluffy. There is a bidet in each room. I guess this is not that noteworthy for an European hotel, but as an ignorant American, I cannot help but laugh at it.

Yelp
This was my second time at the hotel and it was even better than the first! It was my mother's first and she loved it. Firstly, the hotel is convenient to bus tours and everything is 5-10 mins on a bus or cab. Madrid is A walkable city. The airport is 15-20 minutes max. The sevice is incredible and for that alone I would return. It was my mother's birthday and they made sure she felt special. The concierge was amazing and helped us plan our days. Every single employee treated us amazing. Thanks to the concediese and Juan Carlos as well as all of the employees in the kitchen and lounge for taking care of us. The Club room was totally worth it! Ours had a cute balcony and was a spacious club room. It was truly incredible! Food: If you love breakfast, I highly recommend that you add breakfast to your stay as it's a great hotel breakfast and the coffee is amazing! They even have a nespresso for guests. The Jardin Intercontinental resto is also great. We only had light snacks but again, the best service! Club lounge is also very nice and has an array of drinks and snacks. Great for some down time after a day in the city or just to hangout. Many business men and women were also taking calls while grabbing a snack. Overall, it was an amazing stay and I would highly recommend the Intercontinental.

Yelp
InterContinental Madrid is located on Madrid's Paseo de la Castellana Avenue, 150 m from Gregorio Marañón Metro Station. This converted 18th-century palace has an attractive restaurant with a garden terrace. The spacious, air-conditioned rooms at the InterContinental feature classic-style décor. Each one comes with flat-screen satellite TV, a mini-bar and a private bathroom. Free WiFi is available. The El Jardín Restaurant serves a daily buffet breakfast, and on Sundays there is an extensive brunch. Bar 49 offers a wide range of wines, cocktails and gourmet tapas. The InterContinental has a 24-hour gym, and massage is available on prior request. The suites and club rooms have access to the hotel's InterContinental Club, which includes a lounge where you can enjoy an all-day buffet, computers, free ironing service and late check-out. The hotel is just 400 m from Calle Serrano Street, famous for its shops. Real Madrid's Santiago Bernabéu is just 1 metro stop away. Barajas Airport is 7.5 mi away. Dr. Erick J. Yelp
This hotel is amazing. Beautiful funitures, decorations, interior design, fragrance, chandeliers, marble floor, live piano music, etc., make up to the luxurious standard intercon promises. Staffs are extraordinarily friendly and courteous, going extra miles and doing their best to make guests feel comfortable. I didn't have to ask for anything. I am just pleasantly surprised by their service and can't wait to share the best hotel experience to others.

Yelp
Spain seemed hit or miss when it came to both hotels and food. This hotel had the best of both worlds, great room and great food. The other reviews are correct in that it is a little out of the way, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Yelp
This was a great welcome to Spain choice hotel. We arrived early and our room was not ready and the only other room available was a smoking room. We decided to pay for an upgrade so we could get checked-in. We ended up with a jr. suite and access to the club as a bonus. The room was a good size, clean and faced the city. There was a tub and a shower; it took a bath that evening. The bathroom products were by L'Occtaine, one of my favorite brands. The club area was one of the better ones I have seen. It was tended to all day and the selections were so good that you could have easily forgotten to go out to explore for lunch and dinner. The gym and spa were nice - we did not use them but did take a look at the offerings. Breakfast was served buffet style in the dining area every morning and that was also out f they world. The selections were plentiful, anything you wanted was there: eggs, meats, cheeses, fresh juices, blood pudding, fruits, vegetables, etc - ALL fresh. The servers were very kind and professional and so was the management. If you are plan to stay in Madrid I would defiantly consider this hotel. It is also in walking distance to all the main attractions and downtown. We could walk to the Prado museum.

Yelp
We were treated like royalty. Everyone from the front desk to the bellman were eager to help. The best part was the club lounge access and free upgrades available to IHG members, which is the one hotel membership I'd strongly recommend. The concierge had great inside knowledge of the city and was able to book reservations for us at Coral de la Moreria, for great food and Flamenco entertainment. This made our stay in Madrid such a blast and one for the memory bank! Internet was fast.

Yelp
Located not exactly in old town area, but convenient enough and taxis are available anytime if needed. Other types of transportations are close by. Best concierge service where we have them made arrangements for all our sightseeings and day trips during our stay. When we have problems with on-line check-in for our flight leaving Madrid, they called the airline and get everything taken care of. We couldn't thank them enough. Buffet breakfast was excellent with many selections of quality food. Room was very comfortable and clean as expected. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Visiting Spain from America, I am familiar with the InterContinental brand and was happy to stay there while in Europe. The staff was very accommodating, granting early check-in for us considering we were on the red-eye. Also, they had converters for outlets so that my American chargers would be able to fit their outlets. The concierge was very helpful with reccomendations. Breakfast was included in our room and the selection was great, authentic Spanish but American if you want it. The only issues came from our room's bathroom. Whenever the faucet would be on the sink would make a hideous gargling noise. And the toilet required maintenance twice during our five night stay. However, these things were trivial and the stay was great.

Yelp
Lovely staff! The guys working at the bar and restaurant are outstanding! I always feel welcome whenever I visit :-)

David P.

Yelp
My first visit to Madrid and the Intercontinental. Great rooms, location and the friendliest most accommodating staff. Breakfast, lunch and dinner all terrific. Would not hesitate to stay here again and will definitely recommend it. David

Yelp
The rooms have a bit dated furniture but the bathroom is amazing. It has 2 different metro options and many bus options near by and there are always taxis available outdoor. Doorman and receptionist we're friendly. It was a bit off the tourist area but you get the real Madrid local restaurants around it.
google avatar

Michael L.

Yelp
We stayed at this hotel during our latest trip to Madrid. The service was exceptional from the front desk, doormen and breakfast staff. Everyone was friendly and accommodating. The rooms are decent size for European hotels, much more like American style hotel rooms. The hotel was very clean and well managed. Room service and water, etc at the hotel get very expensive. We located a grocery store around the corner and purchased water and snacks for the room. The hotel is a bit out of the city center however it is close to the Ruben Diario metro station which is only €1.50 cost into town and only a short walk from the hotel. They also have a taxi rank outside and so very easy to get to/from the airport, although the cost is about €35. Although I was here mainly for a business trip, I would probably have stayed within the city center for a personal trip instead of at this hotel. The extra commuting cuts into time better spent in the city. I imagine they probably attract more of a business rather than a tourist crowd, and they seem to execute that niche well.
google avatar

Tono M.

Yelp
We stayed at this hotel during our visit to Madrid and it was great. The staff was attentive pleasant professional and really felt like you were part of a great property. The location is pretty good you can walk to Metro stations and it's very laid-back and not the hustle and bustle that you have closer to the other tourist destinations downtown. The bed was awesome very comfortable great linens the bathroom had all of the expected goodies in a little bit more such as shaving kit personal kit things like that. The restaurant was nice very expensive as you'd expect in most Hotel restaurants with the quality of food was delicious and the service was great as well.
google avatar

Ester B.

Yelp
Nice hotel. Not very close to tourist attractions, but near public transportation. No pool.
google avatar

Jennifer N.

Yelp
Room was decent and they had a king size bed available, but aside from that I was sorely disappointed. The extra cost for a "club room" was a complete waste of money, the complimentary snacks and wine are not worth whatever they tell you to pay. It's like hanging out in an airport lounge (depressing) when you can go out to any of the bars around town and get a glass of wine for 1.50€. They snacks will also make your stomach queasy. The room itself, while clean, leaves quite a bit to be desired. You can get full suites elsewhere in town for less. The bathroom is a joke. The shower was tiny, think 1/2 meter by 1/2 meter and the tub is well, blah. I stayed in several places during my trip to Spain but this was pathetic. When paying that much extra for a "Club" room (that was made out to sound like a suite) that is built up by the staff to be so wonderful, I expect quite a bit more. Save your money and get a nicer suite elsewhere.
google avatar

Keith W.

Yelp
Great location but my room was pretty small. I think for the price you are better off staying in a NH Hotel or somewhere cheaper. The lobby is nice and the staff was helpful with recommendations and assistance.
google avatar

Roger M.

Yelp
Five star hotel. Classical style. Great to have access to the club lounge for food and beverages available all day. Time to relax after a long day.
google avatar

Rachel B.

Yelp
This is more of a 4 and a half star hotel, but that's not an option on Yelp. Another hotel I stay at with my job and an exceptional one at that. Very nice rooms like any other hotel in the Intercontinental line. Marble bathrooms, soaking tub, bidet, high end amenities. Located downtown, and just a short walk to the train station. If you like breakfast, they offer a delicious breakfast buffet with many options. The restaurant is located in an atrium with a beautiful view of the courtyard. Definitely worth checking out if you can afford a higher end hotel in the business district.
google avatar

Thomas M.

Yelp
This is a very nice hotel. It is not as conveniently located as some hotels but it's not bad. Still within walking distance to most places. Very friendly staff and decent food. The rooms are nice. The beds are a bit hard, more like sleeping on a rock but at least you can order a better pillow to your room. Decent bar and the gym and spa are very nice too.
google avatar

Ctam G.

Yelp
Not as good as some of the others...bathroom is tiny, and shower was about as big as a small closet. Needs an update..not sure why someone pushes two twin bed together to make it look like a hybrid-queen. Elevators are as small as the shower. Breakfast buffet is minimal. Staff is, as always very nice..

Rosanna M.

Yelp
Just enjoyed a few short days at the InterContinental. The rooms are extremely comfortable with gracious amount of space. Marble bathrooms are very indulgent with lovely linens and beautifully-scented l'Occitane toiletries. As reported by others, the doorman and concierge staff are extremely helpful and give amazing recommendations for restaurants and handle any logistics. We were lucky to book the club level as IHG members and enjoyed complimentary breakfast, tea time and cocktail hour. While the hotel is not near the tourist section of town, it is easily accessed in a short 10-minute taxi ride. And, it enjoys the added benefit of being in a quieter area. We hope to return one day.

L. S.

Yelp
Great hospitality. We stayed here right before Christmas with our family and had adjoining "club" rooms. Throughout our stay, the staff was welcoming and accommodating. They have a lovely buffet breakfast in an upscale feeling atrium-like dining area. I think my children felt a bit like "Eloise" at this hotel. Our rooms and bathrooms were very spacious - especially for European standards. Manager Juan Carlos Caballero was very helpful when we had a slight hiccup. We liked the location - not in a neighborhood heavily populated by tourists - but if you are ambulatory a nice jaunt down a park-like boulevard to popular sites like the Prado. We took the metro from the airport to the hotel and used the bus when we were tired of walking and sometimes a taxi.
google avatar

Betty R.

Yelp
This Intercontinental provides everything we expect from the hotel group - excellent service, luxurious amenities, and larger-than-standard rooms. The location of the hotel is great - very close to the Gregorio Maranon Metro, and right on the Paseo de la Castellana, which is a main artery of the city. The Loewe toiletries are a treat, but the really special part of our stay was the bar staff - hospitable, knowledgeable, friendly, fun-loving, and incredibly proud of their trade and their city. You don't necessarily expect to make magical memories in a hotel bar, but we definitely did - we cannot wait to return to Madrid and to the Intercontinental!

Christopher M.

Yelp
We had drinks out on the Terrace here two nights while we in Toledo. It had the most stunning views you could imagine. We felt like we were living in a world created by el greco--and the drinks were cheap. Our tab after 3 horus was less than 20 Euro.

Biggie F.

Yelp
Just stayed here, once, but I'm pretty sure we'll be back. You know, it's an InterContinental, which is good; and not over-priced, which is also good. It's also close to a lot of good stuff, like the Museo Sorolla; and I like the area just across the Paseo de la Castellano.

Jaba J.

Yelp
4 stars because it doesn't have a swimming pool and the bed/bathroom were just average

S. F.

Yelp
The hotel is very classic - with classic decor and classic service. Concierge personnel is very helpful, provided us a map that marked with all the major attractions. The hotel is relatively close to a metro station, which takes you to everywhere. My travel package includes free breakfast, which is greatly appreciated, because in Spain lunch and dinner comes so late, you need a big breakfast to get you start the day. I'm not sure how much you have to pay for breakfast, but it may worth paying for it. The buffet breakfast is very high quality! I believe free wifi in each room. Our family of 3 stayed in a club room, which is very spacious.
