Yelp
What an amazing and wonderful hotel in overlooking the tranquil Monterey Bay!
I spent two nights at the Intercontinental Clement Monterey at the start of my road trip last week. While there were a few issues at the start of the stay - Sunil the night supervisor, and Tom - the front desk manager - both worked with their team to turn things around.
Check-in was prompt and efficient - Cecilia provided me with a list of hotel amenities, nearby restaurants/points of interest, a drink voucher (which I forgot to use), and thanked me for my years of loyalty with the hotel chain (my first stay at a Intercontinental was the Mark Hopkins in SFO over a decade ago).
My first room was a King Bed overlooking Cannery Row (Room 437 in the Main Building). While the room was spacious enough - two potential concerns stood out for me: 1) The noise that was apparent even with the balcony door closed (how bad would it be in the evening?) 2) the room was missing a bathtub (I was looking forward to soaking after a long road trip up from OC). The noise concern was apparent in the evening when I was trying to get to bed earlier since I didn't have a bathtub to soak, was tired from the long drive, and wanted to start the next day early enough since it would be my whole day in the Monterey area. Noise from below and what sounded like a motorcycle convention kept me up well into the early morning hours.
I shared my concerns with Sunil who was the night supervisor and he assured me that he would try to find a room to move me to the following day, which would address the noise issue and have a bathtub.
I was actually at the Monterey Bay Aquarium (which is next door to the Intercontinental by the way) for the first time ever after I joined as a member (might as well, it goes to a good cause - plus, it gives me an excuse to come back to visit the area) - when I received a phone call from Tom, the front desk manager. He was pleasant and mentioned that Sunil had brought my concerns to his attention and that he had a new room I could move to whenever I came back from the aquarium. The room change was seamless - new keys were assigned, and I was told to take my time to transferring my belongings from my old room to the new one.
Have to admit - the new room definitely made up for the lackluster first room. I had a breathtaking view of Monterey Bay - with a full balcony to boot. The room also came with a bathtub, as well as all the other wonderful appointments you've come to expect from staying at a hotel brand such as Intercontinental. I actually found myself ordering most of my meals to-go, and bringing it back to the hotel room to enjoy in my own private space.
The rooms themselves are nicely appointed. In addition to a comfortable bed with plenty of pillows, my particular rooms had a bonsai tree, a zen-like sand tray, Nespresso machine (with adequate coffee pods and accessories), and adequate seating areas. Both rooms (the one I stayed in the first night and the replacement) had their own fireplaces, and balconies (although I'm hearing from some people that some rooms lack a balcony, much less a full one. The bath toiletries were good - I think the stand out star was the hand soap by Byredo from their Bal D'Afrique line. Something about the scent reminds me of a tropical island getaway with palm trees, sandy beaches, and sparkly clear blue waters...
Thank goodness for valet parking - when I turned onto Cannery Row on a busy Saturday afternoon - there were people everywhere, completely oblivious to the laws of the road - people walking in the street outside of crosswalks, etc. while you can park in front of the hotel to unload your belongings - you'd either have to self-park in the hotel's structure a block away (and somehow do so without running a clueless tourist over) - or you can opt to have the valet park your car for you. I went with the latter.
The hotel restaurant - the C Restaurant/Bar - is located on the first floor of the hotel, overlooking Monterey Bay. I actually dined here for breakfast - had a great experience - and there's a separate review I wrote for it on their respective Yelp page.
You are centrally located to wonderful choices to eat/visit on Cannery Row. From the Monterey Aquarium next door, steps to restaurants (check out Whaling Station for prime rib/steaks), dessert places (Ghirardelli Ice Cream shop just minutes away). Spend a day over in Carmel or head down PCH to check out Big Sur.
Overall, a wonderful hotel and easily my favorite among the Intercontinental brand of hotels. Tom and Sunil lead a great team of front desk crew members who definitely turned an issue around - something I do appreciate and am happy with their service. While this was a much needed trip to relax/unwind - there's still plenty I've yet to see in the Monterey area, and so I'm planning a return trip in the next few months, and will not hesitate to stay here when I do come back.
