33 Best Hotels in Tokyo for Families, Couples, and Solo Travelers | Condé Nast Traveler

"A short elevator ride from Shinagawa Station, The Strings greets guests with a vaulted lobby and a capacious bar that always feels like five o'clock; rooms make efficient use of space with large picture windows over Tokyo Bay, Tokyo Tower and the station, and service is responsive—though light sleepers should avoid rooms with the Shinagawa view because of train noise." - Brandon Presser

The Strings by InterContinental, Tokyo

"Why did this hotel catch your attention? What's the vibe? A short elevator ride takes guests up from the hustle of Shinagawa Station—one of Tokyo's busiest—and into the vaulted lobby of The Strings. It always feels like 5 o'clock here; a capacious bar pulls in travelers and locals alike. The room is open to the below, atrium style; the design may feel a little retro, but it works. What's the backstory? Part of Intercontinental, The Strings proffers its own identity with a light musical theme. Tell us all about the accommodations. Any tips on what to book? Aided by large picture windows overlooking Tokyo Bay, Tokyo Tower, and Shinagawa Station, the standard rooms do an admirable job of efficiently using their space. Light sleepers should skip the Shinagawa view—trains regularly trundle some 30 floors down, and despite the double-glazed windows, there's still some light clacking. From other angles, the lofted rooms are perfect nooks for watching the twinkling city lights. Is there a charge for Wi-Fi? The wifi is free and fast. Drinking and dining—what are we looking at? Two words when it comes to breakfast: Club Lounge, which offers three set menus (Japanese, Western, or Low-Cal) and a panoply of a la carte mains and snacks. Otherwise, the onsite restaurants cater to Western and Asian palates, although the undeniable winner is Kazane, the on-site teppanyaki restaurant where resident chefs work their magic behind a massive griddle. And the service? One click shy of ultra-luxury, the hotel does an admirable job of not being over-doting and allowing space for privacy. But when service is needed, an international and Japanese staff drops everything. What type of travelers will you find here? The Strings does a roaring wedding trade, catering to dozens of posh Japanese couples each weekend who snap portrait photos in the sprawling, perfectly lit lobby. What about the neighborhood? Does the hotel fit in, make itself part of the scene? f you've purchased a JR Rail Pass and are poised to take day trips from Tokyo, this hotel—practically perched atop one of the country's most important bullet train hubs—is perfectly placed. The area around the hotel isn't much of a neighborhood, but you're 15 minutes from Shibuya and Omotesando one way and 15 minutes from Ginza in the other. Is there anything you'd change? While the bathrooms have all the modern conveniences—hello, robot toilet—they could use a teeny refresh to match the harmonious aesthetics of the bedrooms. Any other hotel features worth noting? Check out the property's sampling of uniquely prepared teas, available for free in the minibar. Bottom line: Worth it? Why? It has great value and a convenient location." - Brandon Presser

The Strings by InterContinental Tokyo (Tokyo, Tokyo) 1 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"In the traditional Tokyo style, the Strings is a high-rise hotel, occupying the top floors of an office tower just across from the Shinagawa train station. Operated by an airline (All Nippon Airways) and aimed primarily at business travelers, the Strings is nevertheless just about as stylish as they come." - Tablet Hotels

I stayed here in a classic room with city view my last three days in Tokyo and I don't know if I just got unlucky but I had a bad experience. Firstly, I didn't enjoy the check-in experience. I booked this stay with Amex Travel which sometimes comes with late check-out and I would've preferred if the staff just told me it did or did not come with my stay- I'm not sure why they needed to ask me if I needed it. It's a small point and I didn't need a late check-out but check-in's should be seamless especially after a long trip. There was no breakfast included with my stay and nothing was extended to me which is understandable but didn't make my experience any better The room itself (2816) I had serious gripes with. It had a musty smell when I first entered and it looked like the room had not been renovated in ages. I'm not sure how a hotel could be considered 5 star with this sort of room. The in-room dining was surprisingly good. The steak I ordered had decent flavor and the portion size was much bigger than what I expected Location is close to the train station and a quick taxi ride to Haneda but I found the hotel itself to be difficult to find and access. I had to walk through some halls and take an elevator just to get to the front desk. This was around $975 for three nights with the third one being complimentary because of an Amex Travel offer. Overall I thought this stay was ridiculous and has given me a worse impression of IHG. Won't be returning and don't recommend staying here

I booked this trip using Amex as it is part of the hotel collection. We booked a week here and were excited as it is advertised as a “5 star hotel”. Our first two nights we were in a standard room as they were at capacity and couldn’t honor the Amex upgrade perk. The basic room was terrible! Stains on the couch, rusted shower hardware, and just overall dated feel with carpet flooring ew! The remainder of our stay was in a “club room” which was substantially nicer (honestly this club room should be the standard room considering how much they charge per night). The hotel dinning is a major disappointment basic offerings for the breakfast buffet and cheap/burnt coffees. The club/lounge food is basically the same as the buffet served outside. The Italian restaurant serves pretty bland food, I only ate there as I had a $100 Amex credit I would definitely never pay out of pocket for that mediocre food. Overall the hotel feels very dated with a retro carpet throughout the hotel and inside the hotel rooms. There are many 3 and 4 star hotels that have much more modern aesthetic and offer amenities like a spa and laundry.

The Strings by InterContinental Tokyo was the perfect mix of comfort, luxury, and genuinely thoughtful service. The rooms were sleek, quiet, and had an awesome view — everything felt high-end but still relaxed. Big shoutout to Kenny, who was so kind and helpful. Not only did he make us feel super welcome, but he also gave us some terrific pointers on Japanese anime locations to check out. Honestly, his tips made our trip way more fun — we got to visit spots we wouldn’t have found on our own. The location was super convenient for getting around Tokyo, and everything from check-in to checkout was smooth. If you’re into anime, want great hospitality, or just want a really comfortable stay in Tokyo, this place checks all the boxes. Kenny especially made it memorable.

The stay started off with a choppy check-in experience, but management followed up, which was a nice touch to show the property does care about their guest experience. The hotel is located on the upper floors of an office building (26-32) so you'll generally have nice views. However, be aware hat some rooms (including mine) overlook a huge construction site that's brightly lit and audible all night. It may be worth requesting a room facing another direction. The location is indeed convenient, but when you arrive from Haneda with luggage, it's not really "1 minute from the station". Keikyu is on the other side of Shinagawa station, and due to said construction, it takes some escalators and a congested elevator to make it to the main traverse. Count on 5-10 mins with luggage. Also, the office tower entrance will be closed at night, so you have to enter from 7-11. The rooms are very nice, but I could not figure out what made my room (2814) premium. It looks exactly like the classic room in the web site, where premium rooms are portrayed as larger corner rooms. So, I don't think it was worth paying extra for the premium room. Breakfast was superb.

My wife and I stayed at this hotel for a few days and was very happy with the experience. Firstly we were helped by Shiori who was so sweet and attentive. She was kind and quick to respond. She made a great effort to accommodate our stay. This hotel deserves 6 stars just because of her! We had a great room with a great city view the convenience was great as well, just a 5 minute walk to the train station and there is even a seven eleven at the bottom of the hotel! Room was clean and refreshed everyday. Great service! Will definitely book for our next stay.

We have greatly enjoyed this experience. Check-in was a little hectic, but that was due to the amount of people were in the lobby. Seemed like some kind of event was going on. The check-in process itself was great. The way they greeted and explained everything to us felt so welcoming. The overall interior felt modern, warm, and luxurious. As we were heading to our room, the corridors were quiet. You could hear the occasional sound from some of the rooms that were cracked open due to cleaning, but no sound from any other of the rooms. It was the same when we were inside our room. We did not hear anything from any other room or the hallway. Sound proofing was excellent. The location itself is convenient. Shinagawa station is connected to many different lines, including the Shinkansen. Do be aware that the walk to and from the hotel to the station is not to be under estimated. Do factor in 5-10 extra minutes to where your destination is, depending on how much luggage and people you have with you. Room was excellent. It was spacious, clean, and bright. Very well equipped with most essentials that you need. Although the hair dryer seemed rather weak. You'd probably be spending sometime if you had long hair. My girlfriend really enjoyed the bath salts as well as the cleanliness of the bathroom. She can be quite picky when it comes to how clean the bath tub is, and each time we came back to our room it was spotless. When I requested help with my luggage, they came right on time and took full responsibility of all of the luggage and brought them down to our airport transfer van while I was checking out. I will be honest, this hotel is not in my usual budget, but for the first time, I have thoroughly enjoyed my stay to the point where I am already trying to plan my next stay. Unfortunately, it won't be soon, but I can't remember the last time a hotel has made me feel this way. I have been spreading the word to all of my friends and family after coming back home from my trip. One last thing. As I was checking out, I told the lady that was helping me in Japanese that I really enjoyed my stay. The way she reacted and thanked me for the kind words made a deep impression in me. We will be returning someday in the future for sure.

Google
We loved our stay! It's has direct access to thr subway (albeit difficult to find coming in for the first time), so it's far enough out and quiet while being accessible to the other neighborhoods. The rooms were so nice, breakfast was 10/10. We also enjoyed the themed afternoon tea. They also organzied our luggage transfer to the next city. Loved everything!

Google
Fantastic stay. Service is top notch. Only slight deduction was calling front desk is hit and miss (mostly miss) had to call 2+ times to hope someone answers whether it was instant service (hotel listed option) or in room dining. One time called 4 times no answer and went down to reception instead to get more toilet paper... Other than that everything was great. Location is great, minutes to shinagawa station and near lots of food and shopping.

Yelp
The Intercontinental The Strings hotel is a fabulous hotel. I had the opportunity to stay a night here and this hotel exceeded my exceptions. The day I checked into the hotel, I was flew from Hokkaido and was tired from the journey. All I wanted to do was check into my room and rest a few minutes before venturing out to explore Tokyo. The lobby is on the 26th floor of the building. I did not know this as I was looking for the lobby on the first floor and just happened to see the small sign with that specific instructions. At checkin, I was escorted to the club lounge to complete my checkin and to enjoy afternoon tea. I was quite happy with the afternoon tea as I was slightly hungry from the flight. When my room was ready, they escorted me down to my room and showed me the elusive and exclusive bathtub nestled next to the window which overlooked Shinegawa. I was a breathtaking sight and you know I soaked in that tub to take in that view. The service at the Intercontinental is outstanding. From the checkin process, to the club lounge, and to daily requests, they went out of their way to make me feel at home (away from home). As I was celebrating my birthday on my trip, the hotel even provided me a cute small bear left on my bed with a note on the table. Chefs Kiss!!!!!!! The hotel is conveniently located next to Shinegawa station and shopping complex. So taking the JR or subway is a breeze. To find the hotel entrance from Shinegawa station, you only need to cross the bridge (2nd level) and look for the Excelsior Coffee shoppe. If you pass it, then you will miss the entrance to the hotel. Trust me. I missed this many times and wandered aimlessly trying to find the entrance to the hotel. Thank you INTERCONTINENTAL The Strings for a wonderful stay and home away from home for my trip to Tokyo.

Yelp
I'm a huge fan of IHG hotels so it was a must for us to stay at The Strings in Tokyo. It's conveniently located in the city but not in the heart of the city. It's about 15 mins away from some of the main attractions such as Shibuya, but, the hotel is connected to Shinagawa station so it's easy to get around via subway. There's also a direct train from either airport (HND and Narita) to the hotel so that's an option versus Uber. We checked in around 9pm and the lobby is located on the 26th floor. The check in process was easy and the staff assisted us with how to take the train. Our room was on the 29th floor and we had an amazing view. It wasn't the biggest room but we had enough space. They even had a humidifier in there to help with the dry air. We also got a chance to check out the gym, and help ourselves to the daily breakfast buffet which had an assortment of food, including vegan and gluten free options. Overall, our 3 day stay was fun and we didn't lack for anything.

Yelp
Nice hotel near Shinagawa Station that my company regularly stays. Been here many times and can say it's a very comfortable hotel. Because the rooms start on the 27th floor it makes them quite sound proof. Building is right next to the station which allows you to easily get anywhere in Tokyo, including Haneda airport. The only real negative I can think of is the fact that there isn't much open later around the hotel and the subway closed too. Makes it hard to get anything late night if one choose/wants to do so nearby. AC works well, beds pretty comfy and hotel has a good bar and restaurant. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here if you are looking for a good spot!

Yelp
I wasn't particularly fond of the front desk. I felt like I was rushed to check in and check out. This was troublesome especially because I had questions regarding my final bill. To be rushed when it comes to a bill that's almost $500, it's kind of absurd. I get that the clientele has money, but there should be more thoughtfulness in the service when it comes to sensitive matters such as money.

Yelp
Service is great and the location is awesome, but it is a small hotel on the 26th floor. Small workout room. Buffet breakfast was okay at best. Coffee was sub par.

Yelp
The Intercontinental brand has dominant grounds in Japan, with over three properties stretched throughout the area. With the Strings by Intercontinental Tokyo, this 5-star hotel is positioned in a fantastic area for business and family travelers alike. I can't stress how awesome this hotel is - it's one of the gems that the Intercontinental Group has and will continue to have. With over 206 guest rooms in this upscale Shinagawa location, the rooms are stylish, with free wi-fi and large windows with a fantastic view of Tokyo. This hotel is definitely catered to more corporate and business travelers, but during Golden Week, it seemed like locals like to stay here as well. Getting to the hotel is quite easy from Haneda Airport - it's simply a quick train ride from the airport to Shinigawa Station, and a quick 5-7 minute walk to the hotel. We quickly checked in around 10:00pm at night after arriving from Los Angeles, and got ourselves situated on the executive floor. The decor is elegant and old school - do mind that the outlets are not the usual US three prong, so if you have a charger that requires three prongs, the only one is available in the bathroom. As with all Japanese rooms, they aren't huge, but definitely a great place to be with its location of furniture and designs. We were given pajamas and a lovely anniversary bear that was such a nice touch from management. The views are incredible as well - you can make out such a vast landscape of Tokyo, even on rainy days. Bathroom wise, it was small but relatively useful - our amenities were the classic Agraria lemon scent, which has been around since 2015. There are also a variety of items that some travelers may want. There is a nice bathtub alongside the shower. Speaking of design, the lobby is one grand place to be. With its sleek, eye-catching atrium and the natural lights floating into the building, it was such a nice place to have breakfast and tea time. With glass walls built into each floor, the area remains quiet even with a busy lunch crowd. Bamboo and other plants decorate the place as well, along with a themed golden Godzilla, which I thought was a pretty cool touch! Even with the hotel's location near the busy train station, they were never any noise issues at the hotel. Throughout our stay, we were constantly being greeted and warmly welcomed. We had our breakfast here for both days, and I must say the spread is quite fascinating and delicious! With Japanese breakfast comfort food to Western omelets to your healthy juice bars, the breakfast buffet had it all during our stay. Eating in the lobby while staring at the magnificent design really helped open each day with a new positive mood. Overall, the Strings by the Intercontinental Tokyo is one of the finest hotels that the IHG group has to offer. As a business-oriented hotel, it's quite great since the speed and efficiency of the service, coupled with the quiet nature of the hotel, makes it incredibly a nice value for a bustling city like Tokyo.

Yelp
13 nights here this year over 3 visits and I still feel it wasn't long enough. Amazing breakfast, wonderful staff, outstanding location and incredible bathrooms for bathing and showers make this my favorite place in Tokyo

Yelp
I found this to be an excellent hotel. The staff are well trained, the gym is medium sized but well maintained, and the breakfast was excellent. Though the rooms are a little small, this is quite forgivable given that Japan has limited space. The location is also quite good. Shinagawa train station is a major stop on the Yamanote train line, providing convenient access to central Tokyo and the Shinkansen bullet train if you want to see other parts if Japan.

Yelp
The Strings is located above office building complex in shinagawa area. Despite the map showing almost above the station, you would have to walk quit a bit from Shinkansen platform. I have used it several times in the past couple years and each time the quality has gone down and price has went up. There is a new Marriott down the street and would prefer them over the Strings. Here is why: Room was magnificent with dark black hardwood, a couch, huge work staton, and glass window full size bath. However, material use are already showing wear and tear, in extent they need to refurbish soon (I don't think the owner thought of majority of people staying would be from western countries where they don't take shoes off). Biz center has turned into a smoke room, defeats the while biz stay concept when you need a printer or any office support (front would print out black and white copies) Fitness center is nice, free weight up to 25lbs (haha), cardio, and machines. What disappoints me the most is the restaurant. There are actually two, one is Chinese that only opens for lunch and dinner (nice view, food is overrated). And western place which opens all day & full bar at night. Not sure why they didn't switch the setting. late night I would prefer having a drink overlooking outside, instead of looking at elevator shaft. Hence I don't drink there. Meal is mediocre. Breakfast used to be full buffet but last few times they switched to continental, yet for same price (I believe I had to shell out 2000yen) for that price I could have five meals outside the building. Front desk and concierge saves this place, there's one Japanese gal and an Australian dude that always make sure I'm taken care of. In fact all of the staff is by far nicer than Courtyard Ginza's snobby front desk, so I hope the Strings would retain these good peeps. This place is overpriced but if you have a corporate card to burn, be happy.

Yelp
I cannot say enough good things about this hotel; I stay here every business trip I have to Tokyo. Rooms: Quiet and very clean. Although small compared to a standard US room, it's pretty spacious for Tokyo. I like the speakers in the bathroom so I can turn on MTV and jam to some J-pop while i'm brushing my teeth :). Service: Both front desk and concierge were very attentive and polite. The concierge was helpful in providing directions around Tokyo. Location: This is my favorite part as it's situated within a 7 minute walk from Shinagawa station which is SO convenient going to and from Narita (using the Narita express). There are great restaurants and shops located within the station..there are SO MANY FOOD OPTIONS! Location in my case is great because I work in Kawasaki and it's a direct train from Shinagawa to Kawasaki. However if you're tourist, location wouldn't be ideal as you're about half hour train ride away from the fun places like Shinjuku, Shibuya, etc. One downside would be their restaurant and bar. I ate at the Chinese restaurant (not by choice) and it was meh. Nicely presented but just very expensive for very mediocre. I highly suggest eating at the many restaurants that surround this hotel. Also the bar was OK, drinks were fine but the service was SLOW. It wasn't very busy but it took forever for someone to take our order and for our drinks to come out. Highly suggest this hotel.

Yelp
The service and the location is fantastic. I had a premier king room and I was very happy with the hotel. The only thing I could have wished for was a bit bigger room if it is supposedly so called king premier room.

Yelp
Amicable staff who go out of their ways to help make your stay comfortable. I am a repeat customer for sure!

Yelp
So trendy, modern, expensive glass, 5 star hotel that starts 25th floor and up (could be wrong of exact floor it starts from) You get a feel of warm, modern, trendy Hotel with heated dark wood floors where visitors can ring a bell at your door. You shall be greeted with Hotel stuff who already know your name as Mr/Mrs welcome, You step out of the Hotel, cross a bridge you are in a sea of people pouring in and out of a train station. Concrete and Glass as far as the eye can see.

Yelp
A friend and I stayed in the ANA Intercontinental Tokyo - The Strings for one night, on our way back from Kyoto, and before heading to the airport the following morning. This hotel is directly next to the Shinkansen train stop (which is a stop on the bullet train to/from Kyoto to Tokyo), so it was very convenient for us on our way back. This hotel is in a great area; we are bummed we didn't have more time to explore and go shopping around there. Service at this hotel was great, the lobby was beautiful, there are great views of the city from the hotel rooms, everything was very clean, and the beds were extremely comfortable. I would stay at this hotel in the future, and for a longer period of time.

Yelp
Trendy hotel with easy access to Shinagawa station. The rooms are a bit small but the view from every room is excellent.

Yelp
Stayed here on business last fall. Very nice rooms, great location and the most helpful staff. The breakfast is very good (slightly pricey) as well. Would stay here again and would recommend to my friends/co-workers.

Aries G.

Yelp
The location is great on top off the Shinigawa Station you do need to walk a quarter of a mile since elevator will take you to 26th floor where the lobby is. Staff are friendly but the price for the room is way high I expect more of a bigger size and new contemporary furnitures. The housekeeping are really good ,keeping up with cleanliness. Two restaurants(China and Western Bar) that are by far needs improvement :for China Shadow to pricey with a mediocre Chinese dish only with exception of the garlic prawn take your money somewhere else although the view is the only you can appreciate at night and friendliness of the staff. While the café bar which serves the breakfast buffet has only few selections I would prefer to walk around Shinigawa Station for a better meal. If I can come back to this hotel it's only because of the friendliness of the staff!
