The Best Credit Cards for Annual Free Hotel Nights - AFAR

"A Vienna luxury hotel in the Fine Hotels & Resorts program where booking through Amex FHR can yield premium benefits; an example stay using the Platinum FHR credit resulted in a suite upgrade, late checkout, daily breakfast for two (noted as roughly $25 per person), and a $100 on-property food-and-beverage credit that was used for dinner." - Paul Rubio

In general, we had an excellent stay at the Intercontinental Hotel in Vienna near the Stadt Park. I would rate it 4.5 stars if I could for several minor but annoying items, see below. The staff were all excellent--very friendly, spoke excellent English, and just gave impeccable service. All hotels should strive to match them. The buffet breakfast was above excellent also. An incredible variety of choices that all tasted beyond expectations. The beds were comfortable and the room had adequate closet space with a large room safe. Where I feel the hotel could use some improvements is in the bathroom and with lighting. The bath area was definitely dated and needs updating. The bathtub shower was somewhat awkward to use--the shower head was on a long hose but was difficult to adjust to the correct height and could not be aimed straight out, while the shower curtain did not adjust easily at all. Also there was inadequate lighting in the bathroom to allow for easy shaving. Also, there was a dark corner of the main room near the TV screen that could have used a floor or overhead lamp. That said, we would not hesitate to return here or to recommend this hotel. Thanks for a great stay!

The hotel enjoys a good location, but many other hotels in Vienna offer not only better locations but far superior service, guest care, and appreciation. Unfortunately, InterContinental Vienna does not seem to value loyalty—whether you're a Diamond Elite or Ambassador member, the recognition is almost non-existent. The front desk experience was unprofessional and inconsistent, with reception staff showing little genuine interest in guest satisfaction. It felt like dealing with employees simply waiting for payday. To make matters worse, the Room Service experience was shockingly poor. When I ordered food for my wife, who was unwell with a cold, the service team failed to deliver the meal properly despite the room door being open. Multiple calls were ignored, and when I finally reached someone, the staff member responded in an unprofessional and dismissive manner, refusing to send the prepared order—even though it was placed well within service hours. Such behavior is unacceptable, even in a 3-star hotel, let alone at an InterContinental. On the positive side, bellman service was polite and helpful. The room itself was average; furnishings were somewhat dated, the bed was uncomfortable, and while the room was pleasantly cool for summer, no extra blankets were provided—my wife ended up catching a cold from the air conditioning. For me, this hotel is now firmly on my “never again” list. It simply did not feel like an InterContinental in any way.

Overall a great experience! Good location, far enough away from the hustle and bustle, but close enough for a short walk. Staff service lobby. Check-in checkout. Wonderful experience. On site food good. Everybody was attentive and helpful. Rooms are a little bit outdated. (A good inside tip, check to see if there is an opera performance during your stay, if so, and if you like Opera then request a room on that side of the hotel because there is an opera outdoor performance venue you'll be able to open your window and experience from the comfort of your room). The view on the other is good also (see picture)

My third time in this hotel. The level of service stayed as before, excellent and exceptional including the front desk, the club lounge the breakfast restaurant and the lobby’s bar. Breakfast buffet variety is nice and high quality. Unfortunately I cannot say the same about the rooms: this hotel needs a make over and room renewal asap. Rooms are dated, suffer from lack of sockets and old furniture which don’t fit the level and price of the hotel. Overall we had a nice stay thanks to the comfy bed and bed lines and quietness of the room.

Google
Review based on 2 stays. I would like to say that stay was great because of the wonderful staff. Starting with Caterina Castilli at the front desk was great at check in. Through the stay was always helpful in finding directions and helping with information. Most front desk people are just cursory polite and don’t go out of their way, but Caterina went out of her way to be very helpful. Location of the hotel is wonderful. It is a walking distance to the inner city located right in front of the U station and close to multiple tram stops. One stop to the City Airport station. Now the hotel building is old as the staff will remind you that it is over 60 years old. Therefore, the rooms, the furniture, the carpets, the common areas are all very dated and in dire need of updates. For instance, there is no charging outlets next to your bed in one of the rooms we could unplugged the lamp so could connect the phone charger and the other room even that was not available. One room had the 1970s plastic shower curtain curtains. The other room was a little more updated and had a standalone shower, which was wonderful The club lounge was worth it. The staff was very helpful and one of the staff members I wish I knew her name helped us in packing delicate items. Overall is a great hotel wonderful staff would love to stay here again

Well, I ended up here because of freak weather and a cancelled flight. Austrian airlines told me that I had to book a hotel on myself, Intercontinental it was. To be honest I arrived 10 PM and had to leave 5 AM so not much time to experience the hotel. Just to observations:||The hotel bar is simply exceptional, it's big, it's cosmopolitan, international, friendly, dogs. Staff second to none. Amazing! This bar is in itself worth a stay in this hotel.||Room a bit dated but very clean, was modern maybe 20 years ago. Still a good bed. I had to leave early but no attempt from the hotel to give me coffee and some to go breakfast. No worries as I got breakfast in airline lounge, still this is kind of expected from a 5 star hotel.

This hotel may be older, but it offers a very comfortable stay. The location is excellent—right in the city center, yet surprisingly quiet, and conveniently close to Stadtpark. The rooms, while somewhat dated, are well-furnished and still very comfortable.||The only downside is that smokers often gather near the entrance, which can be unpleasant when coming and going.||Overall, I enjoyed my stay and would recommend this hotel for its comfort and prime location.

We stayed here fr a week in July fr a family vacation. It was very disappointing! Iv stayed here 7-8 years ago. It has really deteriorated since then! |The rooms have terrible carpets and the smallest toilets that Iv ever experienced in my travels. Certainly not more than a 3 star at best. It’s dated with bad service. If u need an empty glass or plate in yr room, u will be CHARGED! Weirdest hotel policy fr a brand like intercontinental ! Unheard of. |The breakfast is not atall to Intercon standards. The choices are limited and really below average! It’s a 10 min walk to the centre. Marriott is a much better brand to book. Will never stay here again!

Yelp
We just spent five nights at the Intercontinental in Vienna and I can say it's probably the worst Intercontinental I've stayed at. First impressions (inside at least) are great. The lobby is very nice and for Christmas, they had apparently made a life-size gingerbread house for the cafe. Really. It was actual gingerbread and candy. Even the view from the room was fantastic. We were on the side facing the ice rink, and all day long we could watch skaters. Kids learning, hockey games, people doing routines. It's the room itself where it all falls apart. It's badly in need of a renovation. First annoyance was the bed. It was on wheels. And the wheels had worn divots into the carpet, so the bed would always settle about six inches away from the headboard mounted to the wall, so you would lose your pillow, ebook, etc. down the gap. The worst part was the bathroom. First off, you have to step up into the bathtub, and it's at knee level. It's so high up, I smacked my toe at least once. If you have mobility issues or just aren't confident you can haul yourself into this thing, better make sure your room has a suitable tub. The tub itself was high enough that my head was at the ceiling. Worst of all was the narrowness of the tub. It was so narrow it would force my feet into uncomfortable positions, meaning I'd twist my knee. I had pain in my leg from the flight, and this tub made it worse. Sadly, it didn't look to me like a renovation was anywhere near the horizon. A couple rooms were being worked on, but the guys were putting up the exact same outdated wallpaper that's in the other rooms. I don't get it. Despite the good points, I wouldn't stay here again.

Yelp
This location is truly exemplary. Absolutely perfect service, accommodating in any way. The best hotel sauna facilities by far. The restaurant, the club, the bar and anything else is just the highest lelrv of hotelier business. I will never go to another hotel as long as I go to Wien. Bravo!!

Yelp
We stayed here last week for 3 days using our IHG points. We're pleasantly surprised that we were upgraded to a junior suite ! We've never experienced that here in the US. The service was exceptional from the bell service to the front desk from the check in to the checkout. Our room was huge being a corner room. You have two amazing views of the city. It has its own changing room, the bathroom has sauna/shower aside from the huge bathtub. The room comes with a Nespresso coffee maker, boiling pot and mini refrigerator. Did I mention all the contents of the mini refrigerator was complimentary! The location was also ideal as it was right across the Stadtpark station so its only few stops away from Stephenplatz and major locations. We would definitely come back or our next trip to Vienna.

Yelp
A luxurious hotel in downtown Vienna, within walking distance to many of the most popular attractions. The staff is friendly and prompt, the rooms are polished, and tastefully decorated. Spacious closet. Large spotless bathroom. The king is comfortable with great sheets, pillows and comfortable fluffy duvet. Quality all the way around.

Yelp
Gorgeous luxury hotel in downtown Vienna. Think marble and chandeliers and you will have a good idea of what the lobby looks like. It has a very sophisticated atmosphere. The room was classy and simple, and provided a great view of Vienna. The club lounge also has spectacular panoramic views of the city, and has quite a good offering of food and drinks all day. The location is ideal; within walking or biking distance of all area attractions. I would recommend renting a CityBike from the kiosk right near the hotel. It's $1 per hour which is very reasonable, and it's a great way to see the city. There are dedicated bike lanes so you're not competing with traffic. I would definitely return to this hotel again if my travels bring me back to Vienna.

Yelp
My first time in Vienna and I had a great time staying at this hotel. We spent 3 nights here, upgraded to a suite with a park view which was beautiful. The breakfast was phenomenal, the selection as amazing! The hotel is a bit old but they've kept it very clean. It was quite and we had no issues what so ever. It was walking distance to everything. Next time I visit I'll be staying here again. This hotel added to the experience of falling in love with Vienna.

Yelp
Old school.... classy and elegant... the best stop on our trip too! I love Vienna. This hotel is a throw back to the past ... try the coffee and strudel ... located perfect to the Stadtpark... and train station!

Yelp
A fabulous hotel in the city centre of Vienna. For location this place gets 5 stars. It is just about 50 meters from the Stadtpark U-Bahn station and getting around the city via tram or train is great. The hotel lobby is grand and has a lovely bar with loads of cocktails and drink choices. I did not eat at this hotel so cannot comment on the food. The room service menu however is pretty pricey. The service here is great and the staff are very helpful and prompt. The rooms are excellent (wish they had better pillows) and rooms are spacious and have nice bathrooms albeit a bit small. They also have smoking rooms available if you need it. All in all, I had a great stay here and I would happily return. The convenience of this hotel from a location point of view makes it a very attractive hotel to stay at. Everything is either a short walk away or a short train ride away from here.

Yelp
If you're looking for a boutique hotel, this isn't for you. If you're searching for a hotel that has : location, American sized rooms, great concierge level, superior restaurant food, a fabulous salon...search no more. There are other hotels that are much more expensive yet the Intercontinental delivers, as always. My incredible boyfriend made the reservations over the Christmas holiday and we were upgraded to a large room overlooking Stadtpark Vienna. Service is super, the staff speaks perfect English (another nod to the Americans with limited language skills) and we had a fantastic meal at their restaurant: MediterraNeo. Since I'm the queen of wash & blow outs..they made a reservation at the salon for only $39 eu and then gave me a 10 eu discount. Fantastic experience! great hair for final meal at Silvio Nickol. The location is ideal; the stay was wonderful and the beds are super duper comfy!!

Yelp
Trip advisor and their own website don't do this place justice. Old world elegance in lobby area and piano bar. Major upgrades and hotel credits for Amex platinum cardholders. Nice location near Stadt Park and a short walk up Johanesstrasse to Old City shopping and cathedral. food and service was very good: local river fish, sausages, schnitzel and good Austrian wines. Buffet breakfast in the parlor has everything from Asian food to baked goods to omelettes to charcuterie. Would stay here again in a heartbeat

Yelp
This comment applies to the bar and the breakfast room. The service was excellent. The bartenders are tru experts at their craft. The breakfast servers are very attentive and helpful. Plenty of choices on the breakfast buffet.

Yelp
Dirty, cripplingly hot and apocalyptically fraudulent. This hotel must be avoided by any one who doesn't wish to be treated like American scum regardless of how polite and mellow you are. My husband and I were lucky enough to be a part of a party of 10 celebrating my father in law's 75th birthday --a trip he'd conceived of 20 years ago and planned meticulously for the last two. Upon arrival we are made to provide a credit card for our individual room charges, no problem. 50 euro hold for a debit card (which is what we had with us). No problem. Even though the four of us standing at the counter clearly heard the desk attendant say "50" we were handed a receipt for "350" 70 euro a day she countered. No big deal, odd and a bit disconcerting but it will be fine we say. No problem. Our rooms were grouped together and we all compared notes in the morning. We fared the worse with a disgustingly dirty bath tub which would not drain, dirty sheets and walls and --no joke -- seventh circle of hell heat. Others had problems with the televisions and other ailments of an aging hotel but no big deal. It was the heat that was the commonality in our group. With the air conditioner on full blast and the window open (temps dipped to below freezing the entire time) we were all miserably hot. We asked, very politely, for the drain to be cleared. This did not happen. If only for the reason that the steam permeating from the shower smelled overwhelmingly like urine, I didn't particularly enjoy standing in the backed up water. The mini bar was equipped with a free bottle of water --which was opened and half drunk. The two vodka bottles were perhaps the water from that bottle? Naw, probably just tap. We didn't want to survey the rest. The concierge was friendly but the restaurants we were sent to were clearly in the business of bilking dumb Americans (a fact they gleefully discussed in front of us not knowing my husband speaks German). No problem. Horrible, but comes with the territory. The breakfast buffet was truly delicious and filled with friendly servers. This would have been enough for us to forget all of these complaints and for us to remember the joy of the time we spent in Vienna with our family. Sadly however ... When we arrived home the 350 euro hold on our card translated to nearly 2200 USD missing from our bank account. No explanation no accounting. We had a coca-cola.

Yelp
The Intercontinental Hotel has been a very important hotel for Vienna. And throughout the year 2014, it has celebrated its 50th anniversary with all sorts of fun and interesting events. But why is the Intercontinental Hotel so important for Vienna? Well when the American airline company Pan Am decided to invest in Vienna by building one of the largest Intercontinental Hotels in the world, this was Vienna's first international chain hotel. And it was Vienna's most modern hotel and a demonstrable sign of post-war recovery for the city and its tourism industry. This hotel quickly became the preferred hotel for world politicians and movie and rock stars visiting Vienna.....Oh, and for cold war spies too! The Intermezzo Bar in the Intercontinental was a favorite gathering place for spies spying on politicians and diplomats .... and each other. Today the Intercontinental still goes on - not with the same market dominance that it once had - but it still does quite well due to its history and to its great location. And whenever someone I know has an expense account or wants to treat me to my favorite afternoon tea - Café Vienna in the Intercontinental is still the place I always choose for my Darjeeling tea, tea sandwiches, and scones. Hey if it was once good enough for Jackie Kennedy, Elizabeth Taylor, and Mick Jagger, it is good enough today for me!

Yelp
Well located hotel that has middle sized rooms decent facilities but hasn't been updated in several decades. All in all a good option if you want a solid centrally located full-service hotel. The breakfast buffet is quite good including Japanese and Chinese and Middle Eastern options in addition to the traditional Western fare

Yelp
I was recently at this establishment...a beautiful sham. I was there from June 28 - July 6 th. I have very bad allergies, and asthma. There was virtually only warm air in the air conditioning in our room. I explained this to the front desk...they gave me a fan to blow the warm air around. I had to use my rescue inhaler more times than I have in over a year. They did absolutely nothing, nor did they care. If you have any health issues, DO NOT STAY at this Hotel. When I go back to Vienna it will be the Hilton or Ritz Carleton.

Yelp
My second favourite business hotel in Vienna, this is very nice inside, actually has a decent restaurant (MediteraNeo, if it's still going), good gym and sauna facilities (but no pool). It's directly opposite the Stadtpark U-bahn station and just a short walk from the centre.

Yelp
A lovely hotel with great staff and facilities in a great location. Once you walk in, you are made to feel welcome and everyone speaks English. Elegant lobby and bar area. The bar and cafe areas are lovely and open long hours. The rooms have ample hanging space, comfortable big beds, ironing equipment, and a small but efficient bathroom. We were extremely comfortable here for our 9 night stay. It is a high-end hotel, but got a very good deal through Travelocity.

Yelp
Attended a Conference here last week. Huge rooms with all mod cons, and excellent service from lobby staff, and also the staff waiting on us with the conference food. But I still dont like 'conveyor belt toasters' at breakfast which leads to queueing at busy times. do they really have to do this. Its also very expensive, despite a concessionary conference rate

Yelp
A wonderful bar and lounge for a casual drink before a concert or performance. Warm atmosphere. Good range of cocktails. Comfortable seating and a piano player to set a great mood.

Yelp
Nice building but a bit far from the center. There is a train stop right in front so it's a great place to start or end your trip at as it's an easy ride to the airport.

Yelp
This is a 4- property. The rooms are a decent size, smaller for American standards but average for NYC or large city. It is across the street from a beautiful park, Stradtgarden, that is excellent for walking or running. It is not near the city center and the restaurants in the area are average. Finding a grocery store was a challenge. The beds and linen are very nice and comfortable, but I don't like the double twins pushed next to each other (the beds still separated). The bathroom is small but adequate. There is no bidet. If you thought about cuddling up to a good movie or show, bring your own because all they play in English are The Waltons and Little House on the Prairie and other outdated shows. Of course, you don't come all the way here to watch TV, but it would be nice to see/hear something in English other than CNN and BBC. The internet access here is HORRIBLE!!!! You have to connect via ethernet cable in the rooms, and then wi-fi is available only in the lobby. They do not offer free wi-fi or internet access. It's $10/hour or $25 for the day or $125 EURO for the week. And, it's SLOW. I tried to download movies on iTunes and a 30 minute TV show took 4 hours on ethernet and wouldn't work in the lobby on my iPad, due to the lack of speed. Email and browsing are fine, but nothing more than that. The staff is really nice, and room service is decently priced. I had breakfast this morning and it was pretty good. It's very quiet around here and things seem to close really early (I couldn't find an open grocery store when there was daylight; not exactly sure what time it was but I think it was 7pm). Another small pet peeve is no clock in the room, except on the TV. You have to get a wake up call or use your own device. Don't forget to bring your converters for your plugs here. The robe and slippers are a nice touch and are comfortable. The minibar is pricey. They have a safe and coffee maker in the room. Overall pretty good, but expect to spend some money for the extras if you want a pleasant experience.
