These Are the 12 Best Off-the-Beaten-Path Hotels in Japan - AFAR

"An airy beach resort on Irabu Island in the Miyako Islands that showcases Japan’s tropical side with white-sand beaches and clear waters. The 58 Western-style rooms are decorated in white and sea-blue tones, with some offering balconies or private plunge pools, and the property includes a gym, SUP yoga on sea or pool, and a spa featuring mineral-rich kucha mud scrubs from the Okinawa seabed. Tin’in restaurant highlights French–Okinawa fusion cuisine, with dishes such as fish tartare with marinated Okinawa vegetables, sautéed papaya with local bonito, and grilled Okinawa wagyu beef." - Adam H. 5 stars for service at IRAPH SUI, a Luxury Collection Hotel! Every staff member treated us like VIPs. Huge thanks to Mr. Nishiwaki, Ms. Sato, and Ms. Horikoshi for their incredible hospitality. Even though I don't speak Japanese, they provided amazing personalized service – recommending/booked local restaurants and communicated with a tour company about my flight delay.| Plus, the rooms were pristine, amenities top-notch, and every request came with a smile. Service truly doesn't get better!|For sur will back to here again in the near future.

We had an extraordinary stay at Iraph Sui, a Luxury Collection Hotel from June 16–21, 2025. This resort is truly a hidden gem in Irabu island, Miyakojima, offering a perfect blend of understated luxury, personalized service, and breathtaking ocean views.||||We were incredibly honored to be upgraded to the Presidential Suite (Room 311), the finest suite in the hotel. The space, the design, and the panoramic views were simply unforgettable, it was a highlight of our entire trip to Japan.||||We are especially grateful to the front desk team, including Satoru, Daisuke, Yutarou, and Mari, for their warm welcomes and daily kindness. Special thanks to Takashi, the Room Manager, for ensuring our comfort throughout the stay, and to Mr. Toshio Ito, whose thoughtfulness made us feel genuinely at home.||||We also like to thank Yutaro Inaba, the Assistant Manager, for his professional hospitality and excellent coordination that made everything seamless.||||From the tranquil setting to the outstanding team, Iraph Sui is the epitome of refined island hospitality. We wholeheartedly recommend this property for anyone seeking a serene, luxurious retreat—and we will absolutely return when we next visit Miyakojima.

The beds were super hard, I don’t understand it being a Luxury Collection. Overall hotel was really nice and elegant, small but good for staying a couple of days. The best part about the hotel was Kana! She was the best thing/person about the hotel. If you need anything or want to get anything done or planned, she’s the person to go to. We had an issue with one of our boat days. When we told her about it, she made it a priority to do all the research for us to find out what happened and gave us options to schedule another with the local people of the Irabu Island, and they were amazing! She hooked it up for us and made the experience 1000x better than what we thought we were getting in to. The location is definitely isolated from everything and the main Miyako Island, but they will take you to some places as long as they are not out of the way. They will drop you off and pick you up from the beach as well. Honestly, if I was Marriott Operations Asia/Japan, I would promote her to GM and move her to another resort as she can handle the stress and abilities of a hotel of this excellence. Kana was the best thing about the hotel!!!

Lovely staff and view but the bed is on the harder side. Had trouble sleeping the first night because of it. Complimentary airport transfers and champagne service during sunset were a welcomed treat. Ebikes were a disaster - at JPY5000 per unit for a full day rental, you'd expect the bike to be in top shape. The seat kept on going down while riding it. A good 10-minute walk from the nicest beach on the island but they have shuttle if you don't feel like walking. Overall, it's a good hotel but it doesn't feel and look luxurious enough to be on the luxury collection of Marriott

One star for the staff & service - the only positive thing. Other than that, this is nothing close to a luxury hotel. I’m genuinely wondering how come Marriott sets such low bar for the luxury collection? Public area: quite disappointing. Lobby is very small and looks crowded. Only one pool which is also tiny. Not much public area/facilities to explore around. Room: I’ve never slept on such a firm bed. Echoing on one of another comment - it is probably only slightly better than sleeping on the floor. Bathroom only has one wash basin. Balcony only has two benches (a bit rusty) and no lounger. View is ok but there are many other hotels on the island having the same view. Breakfast: food is the most disappointing part. We tried both the western and Japanese set menu for breakfast and both are worse than mediocre. Also buffet area is quite shabby with very limited options Price: cost ~$1200 per night. We know the expenses on the island are higher than Naha but this is way overpriced considering its quality. Never trust social media pics/promotions again

The reviews for Iraph Sui are pretty mixed and staying here was a bit of a Hail Mary. But the hotel had a 4 for 3 nights offer so we took the plunge and we were very glad that we did. The hotel staff were all lovely and went out of their way to try to make our stay a success. ||It's a Japanese hotel so you may find the beds hard by Western standards but the rooms are large, well-appointed, and comfortable. ||The hotel's beach is not swimmable but there is an on-demand shuttle between 10 AM and 5 PM to take you to a stunning beach just down the road. Think Grace Bay in Turks, but shorter and shallower and with one major exception - no beach clubs. You can rent small umbrellas from a shack shop at one end or the Blue Turtle bar/restaurant at the other but we needed to adjust our expectations. No chaise longue - you lie on a towel on the sand, and you will have to hike to the bar if you want a beverage. ||On the plus side, when we went in early October, the beach was pretty empty and the water was clear and warm. ||Dinner at the hotel isn't cheap but this is partially offset by the most generous champagne happy hour at sundown that I have ever seen.||We would go back - indeed we hope to.

Iraph Sui was a boutique hotel in a good location with excellent service from staff. The room was well decorated and all that was needed. They provided a free shuttle service to the airport and local beach. The restaurant was classy but expensive. Overall a very good place to stay in Miyakojima.
