These Are the 12 Best Off-the-Beaten-Path Hotels in Japan - AFAR

"An airy beach resort on Irabu Island in the Miyako Islands that showcases Japan’s tropical side with white-sand beaches and clear waters. The 58 Western-style rooms are decorated in white and sea-blue tones, with some offering balconies or private plunge pools, and the property includes a gym, SUP yoga on sea or pool, and a spa featuring mineral-rich kucha mud scrubs from the Okinawa seabed. Tin’in restaurant highlights French–Okinawa fusion cuisine, with dishes such as fish tartare with marinated Okinawa vegetables, sautéed papaya with local bonito, and grilled Okinawa wagyu beef." - Adam H. IRAPH SUI, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Miyako Okinawa (Miyakojima, Okinawa Prefecture) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Far out in the near-tropical Miyako Islands, between Okinawa and Taiwan, you’ll find Irabu Island, one of the most idyllic places in greater Japan. And it’s here that you’ll find Iraph Sui, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Miyako Okinawa, a seaside resort that offers complete immersion in the tranquility of this island setting. Most of its 58 rooms and suites look out to sea, but even those that face the gardens are supremely restful, minimalist in style and plush in their comforts. A spa makes extensive use of Okinawan products, as does the hotel’s French restaurant, Tin’in." - Tablet Hotels

I had read all the reviews so should have known what I was going to get and to be honest the hotel grew on me the longer we stayed. I've rated it 3 stars as it was passable. With a few adjustments, this hotel has the bones to be great and not just average. Cannot speak more highly of the staff for accommodating our requests and booking activities for us. What was missing was pool service and a greater attentiveness within the restaurant. It may have been due to the language barrier however when we had lunch, we were not offered drinks besides water and the follow up was not particularly great. There was also a lack of atmosphere outside with furniture being fold out chairs and tables for the most part. Some additional styling would have gone a long way and proper maintenance. The sunsets from the property are truly amazing though and the happy hour while watching the sunset was fantastic. My rating is on the basis that it is described as a luxury collection hotel and value for the price we paid. Food was passable but not up to scratch for a luxury offering as well as the pricing being very high for what it was. With my burger I was given a handful of fries as accompaniments. It was very sorry looking. My A&W burger and meal was 20 times better at 1/4 of the price. Facilities were sparse with just the single pool and no gym. Maintenance of the grounds could also have been better with outdoor equipment not in fantastic condition as well as there being cleaning equipment left out in the open. Outdoor furniture also was budget and didnt have a lux feel. No pool side service which should have been a given at this level of 5 star hotel. Some light music might have been nice throughout the day at the pool as well to create some atmosphere. Bed was extremely hard which I had read in the reviews prior to booking although I didn't realise it would feel like sleeping on a table! Having said that I didnt get a back ache from it... Rooms are sparsely decorated and could do with some sprucing up however floor plates were large and we did get upgraded to a room with a good view.

5 stars for service at IRAPH SUI, a Luxury Collection Hotel! Every staff member treated us like VIPs. Huge thanks to Mr. Nishiwaki, Ms. Sato, and Ms. Horikoshi for their incredible hospitality. Even though I don't speak Japanese, they provided amazing personalized service – recommending/booked local restaurants and communicated with a tour company about my flight delay.| Plus, the rooms were pristine, amenities top-notch, and every request came with a smile. Service truly doesn't get better!|For sur will back to here again in the near future.

We had an extraordinary stay at Iraph Sui, a Luxury Collection Hotel from June 16–21, 2025. This resort is truly a hidden gem in Irabu island, Miyakojima, offering a perfect blend of understated luxury, personalized service, and breathtaking ocean views.||||We were incredibly honored to be upgraded to the Presidential Suite (Room 311), the finest suite in the hotel. The space, the design, and the panoramic views were simply unforgettable, it was a highlight of our entire trip to Japan.||||We are especially grateful to the front desk team, including Satoru, Daisuke, Yutarou, and Mari, for their warm welcomes and daily kindness. Special thanks to Takashi, the Room Manager, for ensuring our comfort throughout the stay, and to Mr. Toshio Ito, whose thoughtfulness made us feel genuinely at home.||||We also like to thank Yutaro Inaba, the Assistant Manager, for his professional hospitality and excellent coordination that made everything seamless.||||From the tranquil setting to the outstanding team, Iraph Sui is the epitome of refined island hospitality. We wholeheartedly recommend this property for anyone seeking a serene, luxurious retreat—and we will absolutely return when we next visit Miyakojima.

I would not stay at this hotel again. We left after one day, this is NOT a luxury hotel. The building/facilities are in dire need of maintenance. There was visible mold in the ceiling of the lobby and on the cushions in the pool area. We had a door to our suite that was rusted and needed paint badly. The staff was very nice but there is only one restaurant on site and it's local Japanese food. I would not recommend this hotel, it was terrible.

The beds were super hard, I don’t understand it being a Luxury Collection. Overall hotel was really nice and elegant, small but good for staying a couple of days. The best part about the hotel was Kana! She was the best thing/person about the hotel. If you need anything or want to get anything done or planned, she’s the person to go to. We had an issue with one of our boat days. When we told her about it, she made it a priority to do all the research for us to find out what happened and gave us options to schedule another with the local people of the Irabu Island, and they were amazing! She hooked it up for us and made the experience 1000x better than what we thought we were getting in to. The location is definitely isolated from everything and the main Miyako Island, but they will take you to some places as long as they are not out of the way. They will drop you off and pick you up from the beach as well. Honestly, if I was Marriott Operations Asia/Japan, I would promote her to GM and move her to another resort as she can handle the stress and abilities of a hotel of this excellence. Kana was the best thing about the hotel!!!

Lovely staff and view but the bed is on the harder side. Had trouble sleeping the first night because of it. Complimentary airport transfers and champagne service during sunset were a welcomed treat. Ebikes were a disaster - at JPY5000 per unit for a full day rental, you'd expect the bike to be in top shape. The seat kept on going down while riding it. A good 10-minute walk from the nicest beach on the island but they have shuttle if you don't feel like walking. Overall, it's a good hotel but it doesn't feel and look luxurious enough to be on the luxury collection of Marriott

One star for the staff & service - the only positive thing. Other than that, this is nothing close to a luxury hotel. I’m genuinely wondering how come Marriott sets such low bar for the luxury collection? Public area: quite disappointing. Lobby is very small and looks crowded. Only one pool which is also tiny. Not much public area/facilities to explore around. Room: I’ve never slept on such a firm bed. Echoing on one of another comment - it is probably only slightly better than sleeping on the floor. Bathroom only has one wash basin. Balcony only has two benches (a bit rusty) and no lounger. View is ok but there are many other hotels on the island having the same view. Breakfast: food is the most disappointing part. We tried both the western and Japanese set menu for breakfast and both are worse than mediocre. Also buffet area is quite shabby with very limited options Price: cost ~$1200 per night. We know the expenses on the island are higher than Naha but this is way overpriced considering its quality. Never trust social media pics/promotions again
